The National Dragster Challenge was the highlight of the day as racers competed for the honor of claiming the “Wally” and prize money to be awarded to the four champions at this event on September 20, 2009 at Woodburn Dragstrip. Danny Wargnier, Greg Kielman, John Floyd, Jr. and Jim Iverson rose to the top and claimed that award. Additionally, Moe Trujillo took the cash in the second-chance race for the day.
No one can doubt that it was Danny Wargnier’s day in Super Pro as he ran right on his dial-in each of the final three rounds. His elapsed times were 8.944 (8,94 dial), 9.932 (8.93 dial) and 8.928 (8.92 dial) in the final three rounds. Wargnier faced Tom Avgerakis in the finals, and drove his 72 Vega to victory.
Kielman averaged a reaction time of .05 for six rounds of racing to claim the Pro victory. He benefitted from his opponent’s red-light start in the finals to claim the victory in his 69 Camaro over Harry Cole’s 65 Chevelle.
John Floyd, Jr. faced Ken Stevens in the Sportsman finals. Floyd took a .031 to .039 reaction time advantage to victory in a double break out race. Both drivers dialed at 12.80, but Floyd’s 12.769 was closer that Stevens’ 12.746 which gave the victory to Floyd.
Jim Iverson faced a determined Eric Johns in the finals of Bike/Sled. Iverson chopped down the tree with a .003 reaction time and that was all she wrote. End of story. Even though Johns ran a 9.222 on his 9.22 dial, Iverson had nailed this round to claim victory. His 8.639 at 147.27 mph was his first and only victory of 2009.
Moe Trujillo defeated John Nero, using a .016 light and 7.230 on a 7.19 dial-in for victory in Run Tuff class at this event. Nero broke out by .035 in the loss.
