JEGS CAJUN SPORTSNATIONALS KICKS OFF IN BELLE ROSE
BELLE ROSE, La. – Racing began today at No Problem Raceway Park hosting the best racers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for the 12th annual JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals.
Stephen Hebert of Westlake, La., won the second annual Tim Hebert Hemi “Chootout” with a final round pass of 8.374 seconds at 160.69 mph to defeat Gary Wolkwitz, Califon, N.J. The 15-car field was a race within a race contested during Super Stock class eliminations honoring long time division 4 racer Tim Hebert.
Leading qualifying today was Richard Prince of Metairie, La., who laid down a 6.172 second, 228.77 mph pass in the KPE Top Dragster category. Chase Murray, Orange, Texas, followed Prince with a 6.280 lap for the No.2 spot, with Robert Moser of Portland, Ind., in the third qualifying position.
Raceland, La., competitor Earl Folse qualified No. 1 in the Sunset Performance Top Sportsman class with a lap of 6.394 seconds at 220.84 mph in his ’86 Camaro. Keith Raftery, Lake Charles, La., grabbed the No.2 spot with a pass of 6.579 seconds at 211.69 mph followed by Robert Mandell, Culleoka, Tenn., in the No.3 qualifying position.
Don Thomas of Amarillo, Texas, climbed to the top of Comp Eliminator going 0.624 under index and Joey Tanksley, Greenwell Springs, La., landed in to No.2 position clocking in -0.610. Super Stock top spot went to Gilbert Johnson, Lecompte, La., running his ’95 Achieva 1.026 under the index followed by Joey Teuton of Houma, La. Gary Summers of Franklin, Ky., went to the No.1 spot in Stock Eliminator followed by Sam Pourciau, Walker, La.
In the two wheel categories, Joshua Guitreau, Prairieville La., led the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson category with a .002 reaction time. Tommy Grimes, Pfufftown, N.C., reached the No.1 spot in Top Fuel Harley while Johnny Vickers of Millers Creek, N.C., posted a 7.147 second, 174.28 mph pass to shoot to the top of Pro Fuel Harley. Other No.1 qualifiers included Jay Wagner, Warsaw, Ind., in Pro Gas Harley, John Toth, Twilight, Pa., in Street Pro Harley and Hot Street Harley, and Donnie Huffman, Lakeland, Fla., in Screamin’ Eagle Harley.
With an unfavorable weather forecast for Sunday, NHRA and track officials have shifted the schedule, moving eliminations for this weekend’s JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals to Saturday morning. In addition to eliminations, the annual NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout will also be contested on Saturday. The event presents a unique match of NHRA sportsman racers in Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman in head-to-head competition to see who really is the best of the best.
The annual specialty fun races conducted during the JEGS SPORTSnationals will be held Sunday as weather permits. These events include the King of the Bayou, Stock/Super Stock CIC race, and the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Shootouts.
