HEBRON, Ohio – Qualifying is complete and the fields are set for Sunday’s eliminations at the JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at National Trail Raceway.
Ohio racer Bryan Keller took over the top spot in Top Dragster with a lap of 6.225 seconds at 233.60 mph in his ‘12 dragster. Keller, Macedonia, Ohio, is followed by Andrew Johnson and Friday’s top qualifier Tom Elliott in the second and third spots respectively. Johnson went 6.235 at 210.67 mph and Elliott sits at 6.259, 219.33. Late afternoon rain showers halted racing action and canceled the final qualifying session for Top Dragster, Comp and Top Sportsman.
Two rounds were completed for the NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout, a 16-car specialty event that posts a $15,000 purse and $5,000 to the winner. The semifinals and final rounds have been moved to Sunday and will see Scotty Rienschield take on Matt Hewitt in one semifinal and Marco Abruzzi will face Jacob Elrod in the other. Moser Engineering sponsors three Shootout events during the year with the South Central division Moser Shootout taking place earlier this year and the Southeast Shootout scheduled for October at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, Ga.
Chuck Haubiel and Lester Johnson held on to their number one spots in Top Sportsman and Comp Eliminator from Friday’s qualifying session. Haubiel, Gahanna, Ohio, went 8.267 in his ’10 Cobalt with Scott Chamness, Kankakee, Ill., in the No. 2 slot. Johnson, Cynthiana, Ky., put his ’55 Belair on top with a 6.480 second lap at 214.04 mph. Dylan Stott and Jeffrey Barker follow with passes of 6.601 and 6.683 seconds.
Wes Leopold and Kevin Skinner also carried over their Friday number one qualifying efforts and remain on top in Super Stock and Stock Eliminator. The pair will lead their fields into Sunday’s eliminations. Leopold, Bethel Park, Pa., powered his ’05 Stratus to an 8.537 second lap and Skinner, Grove City, Ohio, went 8.639 in is ’13 Cobra Jet.
Racers in Stock and Super Stock ran Class Eliminations today with 23 Stock and 21 Super Stock racers visiting the winner’s circle and taking home the trophy including John Kunsak who took out Jeg Coughlin with his ‘15 COPO Camaro.
Racing resumes on Sunday morning with round one of eliminations for all classes. Top Dragster, Comp and Top Sportsman round one is scheduled for 10:30. Tickets are $15 for adults, children 6-12 are just $5 and kids 5 and under are free.
