COMMERCE, Ga. – Orlando Speed World Dragway won the NHRA Southeast Division Summit Racing Series Team Championship in a close battle with Montgomery Motorsports Park and Music City Raceway while Brandon Jarrell led the list of individual winners at the Southeast Division Summit Finals at Atlanta Dragway.
The team from Orlando, Fla., racked up 42 points to hold off Montgomery Motorsports Park, Montgomery, Ala., and Music City, Goodlettsville, Tenn., who tied for second with 39. Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville and Bristol Dragway were fourth and fifth with 38 and 37 respectively.
Joining Jarrell with individual trophies and advancing on to the NHRA Summit National Championship were Chad Brewer, Bill Crutcher and Roy Koch who each won their eliminator on Sunday. Via a special wild card drawing held early this year, Jerry Turner will also move on to the nationals in Pomona, Calif., by winning the division’s Summit Race of Champions event in Super Pro Bike.
Jarrell, Ashland City, Tenn., drove his ’83 S-10 to eight round wins in Super Pro, capping it off with a 6.834 second lap at 90.16 mph to defeat Wesley Mayfield, Gainesville, Ga., who had troubles right off the start. Acree posted a lap of 5.200, 107.74 in her dragster for the win.
Brand, Hayden, Ala., used a perfect reaction time to score the holeshot win in Pro over Travis Bryant, Bowman, Ga. Both drivers ran .012 seconds over their dial with Brand running 7.018 in his ’73 Firebird and Bryant went 6.508 at 104.96 mph in his ’68 Camaro.
Cox combined a .019 second reaction time with an 8.244 run on his 8.24 dial to end Cody Spears day out of Mt. Carmel, Tenn. Spears broke out with a 9.188 on his 9.21 dial.
Young, Palm Harbor, Fla., took home the trophy in the High School class with a .021 second package driving his ’99 Firebird to a 7.677 second, 88.91 mph lap to a red lighting Gabe Ellison, Rogersville, Tenn., and his ’06 Charger.
Turner will race next month in California for the NHRA Summit National Championship with a win over Tim Hunt in the Super Pro Bike Race of Champions. Hunt ran too quick by .014 seconds to break out as Turner was .017 on the tree and .004 over his dial at 5.844, 118.48.
