Good Vibrations Texas Nationals Fueled by Sunoco Qualifying Complete at San Antonio Raceway
Eliminations Set For Later Today
Marion, Texas (April 2, 2016) – International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Drag Racing returned to San Antonio Raceway today for the Good Vibrations IHRA Texas Nationals Fueled by Sunoco, the second race of the 2016 IHRA Drag Racing season. Qualifying for tonight’s race is now complete; eliminations begin at 5 p.m. central time.
With yesterday’s gusty winds and qualifying postponement, qualifying was reduced to two rounds increasing the pressure to make the eight-car field. And for AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car drivers Ronnie Young from Wylie, Texas, Shaun Bowen and Mike McIntire, a first-round disqualification in qualifying meant each would have just one chance to make tonight’s race.
McIntire posted the second-quickest run of the day and moved all the way to the second qualifying position with his 5.6844-second pass at 250.42 mph. Bowen posted a 5.7681-second effort and will start fourth tonight. Young’s Blue Max Ford Mustang sustained engine damage in the first round of qualifying, and he was unable to make a second attempt; he did not qualify for the Good Vibrations Texas Nationals. Paul Romine is the No. 1 qualifier for tonight’s race and will face veteran racer Tim Boychuk in the first round of eliminations.
In Pro Stock, John Konigshofer is the No. 1 qualifier. He posted a 6.2250-second effort at 225.34 mph in Saturday’s first qualifying round and held on to take the top spot. He races Larry O’Brien in tonight’s opening round.
In Pro Modified, Bill Lutz, who was second after the opening round of qualifying, made a 6.0827-second pass at 240.51 mph to take the No. 1 qualifier. In Nitro Motorcycle, Tracy Kile was quickest in the first round of qualifying with a 6.549-second lap at 218.66 mph and held on to the top spot. He races Rickey House from Humble, Texas in the first round of eliminations.
After tonight’s eliminations, IHRA Drag Racing resumes tomorrow with the Summit Pro-Am Tour; Sportsman qualifying begins at 9 a.m. central time followed by eliminations in 11 classes. Tickets are available at the gate and online. Each ticket includes free pit access providing up-close action and driver interaction.
