WHITELEY RACES TO QUALIFYING LEAD FRIDAY AT NHRA J&A SERVICE PRO MOD DRAG RACING SERIES EVENT AT NHRA CAROLINA NATIONALS
CONCORD, N.C. – Steven Whiteley powered to the qualifying lead Friday in the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the NHRA Carolina Nationals. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing at zMAX Dragway is presented by the Real Pro Mod (RPM) Association. This is the eighth of 10 Pro Mod events on the 2016 season.
Whiteley raced his Y-Not Racing ’69 Chevy to a 5.840 second-pass at 248.07 mph to take the qualifying lead during the second session on Friday. Whiteley has been No. 1 twice in his career and was the top qualifier at this event in 2014.
"My rookie year, we were No. 1 and last year we were awfully close,” said Whiteley. “It feels nice to get it again, but that’s just the qualifying sheet. What counts is race day. Hopefully we can go some rounds and gain some points on all these guys. That’s our goal."
Von Smith is qualified second with a run of 5.847 at 247.11, points leader Rickie Smith qualified third at 5.856 at 248.84, and Troy Coughlin who is second in points, qualified 17th at 6.041 at 249.26
Pro Mod qualifying for the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the NHRA Carolina Nationals will continue Saturday, Sept. 16 with the final qualifying session at 12:15 p.m. The first round of eliminations will take place at 2:30 p.m. and continue on Sunday.
