By Richard Parks
EDITORIAL: Jon Asher IS 100% correct. If someone has BIG money on a specific team/driver they just might do something that gets someone hurt. So, no gambling on any motorsports. The NIL problems are bad enough. Who can’t see the top 4 or 8 College Football Teams not being the same 4 or 8 each year because those few teams can raise enough money to buy NFL players who just missed the draft? And now this is reaching into the High School Teams. School is for education. Full stop. If you want to play a sport, do it so PRO teams will see you. Full stop. I can’t wait to see a non-NIL-funded lineman stepping to the side when a blitzing linebacker comes at full speed and the running back gets his butt handed to him. I’ve lost my way, back to the gambling issue in motorsports. NO! John Towle
THE EDITOR REPLIES: As you know, I was opposed to gambling in motorsports. That is until I had a meeting with the NHRA a week ago. They asked me to attend with my son Scott Parks and also present were Glen Cromwell NHRA President, Evan Jonat, David Kennedy, and Brad Gerber, who is in charge of the gambling program. Here is a brief recap: No one at NHRA or the race teams will be allowed to gamble on NHRA drag racing. The program with US Integrity is a monitoring program only. The NHRA will be required to pay a fee, not receive any money. There is gambling going on right now that is unregulated, and the Association wants to know where it is and control it. NHRA will be working with the drag racing teams, who have agreed to abide by the rules and Gerber will be speaking with the Pro Drivers Association for their input. The NHRA promised to send me updates and as they come in, I will publish the emails in the newsletter for public discussion. I was misinformed and apologize, and I will retract my previous comments.

2) Remembering Jim McLennan; courtesy of Don Smith. “I have many great memories of Jim McLennan, since opening day at Half Moon Bay Drag Strip, which our WINDERS Car Club helped run, the first three years. Then there was Cotati Drag Strip, and Champion Speedway. But the fondest of all memories was seeing his smiling face at Champion Speed Shop, when I would make my weekly trips for parts. He always made everyone feel special, like you were a real part of
the Drag Racing family. My heart goes out to all family members. Jim will be sadly missed.” Bill & Carole Whelan
“We are so sorry to hear of Jim McLennan’s passing but take comfort in knowing that he is free from suffering
and at rest. We would like to thank you for all of the time that we spent together, at the track, in your home, and as a part
of your extended family. It was the twin engine dragster that Marc wrenched on that provided us the opportunity to
begin hanging around together. This time gave us the chance to become better acquainted and we ended up getting married. We love you and our hearts go out to you all. Thank you for all of the good times. We will miss Jim’s kindness, great smile, and wonderful laugh.” Marc & Lauren Santoro

3) BLAST FROM THE PAST…… From the Wally & Barbara Parks story, We Did It Our Way. ABOUT 1942 Barbara Livingston in Washington DC; Aunt Ellen writes to her. Barbara Livingston was living in Washington DC, but the exact time is uncertain. The address that I have, came from a letter written by her Aunt Ellen Boyle and shows 2437 15th Street, NW, Washington DC. There was some indication that she was attending school there and was possibly attached to some politician’s office, perhaps as an intern.

5) READERS: Don Smith asked, “Is Al Caldwell still alive.” To which the editor replied, “I believe Dave Wallace told me that he has probably passed on. He was a decade or two older than us.” Then Dave Wallace Jr added, “So I’ve been told, by various NorCal veterans. However, none seems to have details about where or when Caldwell passed.” The editor then replied, “I found 9 Al Caldwells in California who had passed away in the last 20 years on Legacy.com, but none of them matched. Maybe Jim Miller can find him. If anyone can it’s Jim. Al Caldwell, who rankled my father, shouldn’t be forgotten. Thank you to all who help bring back the past.” The “Let’s find Al Caldwell” committee has been formed. We need to know more about Al Caldwell, the Drag News editor of long ago.

6) From Jim Miller, Chief Historian for the American Hot Rod Foundation (Gas/Fuel wars, serialized in coming issues):
“I’ll digress a bit here. Go back to WWI and look at the aircraft engines. The higher in the sky they went the less power the engines made. The engineers dug out their math books and rediscovered barometric pressure and the higher you go the less air you have so the motor leans out, gets hot and then destroys itself. By the end of WWI National Governments and Engine Manufacturers understood the basic principles of engines and started using Superchargers and doped gas to get more HP out of the engines. Along with this, chemists tweaked the gases and doped them starting with Tetraethyl Lead to name one. The 1920’s board track racers (AAA Champ Cars and AMA Motorcycles) jumped on to doping fuels as did gasoline manufacturers and octane began to rise as did compression ratio (hello Pinging).” Jim Miller, Dry Lakes Racing Hall of Fame member in the Historian Category Miller212.842@sbcglobal.net . 7) Gone Racin’ … Ak Miller’s Tribute. Story by Richard Parks. June 28, 2005 (to be serialized in upcoming issues)
Leslie Long said that Joe Reath had challenged Ak to a race and lost, whereupon Jack Lufkin piped up, “Ak’s never been beaten in a fair race.” Dick Martin said, “Ak’s gotten a lot of speeding tickets in his lifetime. He’s an unregimented racer just like Max Balchowsky was.” Ak made such an impression on Martin with his vast racing experience and folklore that Ak became the first hot rod legend that Martin wrote about for Rod & Custom Magazine. Ed Iskenderian, as he promised grabbed the mike. “I’d be willing to pay for Ak’s stories.” Ron Hope, driver of Don Green’s fuel altered drag car, The Rat Trap, told about hanging around Miller’s shop. He learned a great deal and said that “Ak and Jack Lufkin were a great influence and launched many a career and helped the kids along in their racing ventures.” Frank Morimoto spoke about the dry lake days and Kam and Harry Oka and the Miller brothers. 8) BOOK REVIEW Corvette Drag Racing: The Golden Era, by Jim Dillon (2023). (to be serialized in the Motorsports Newsletter)
By 1961 there was no denying that the Corvette could hold its own in the sports car classes. As the NHRA and AHRA (American Hot Rod Association) expanded, so did the opportunity to showcase the “American Sports Car,” none other than the Corvette. The NHRA Nationals moved all over the mid-west, from Kansas, Oklahoma, Detroit to Indianapolis, but other major races sanctioned by the AHRA and NASCAR blossomed from coast to coast and there to show off its prowess was the Corvette, small and potent. By the late 1960’s the IHRA (International Hot Rod Association) came into existence and there were yet more major competitions added to the local racing scene. Jim Dillon can be reached at jim@dillonreo.com and Gone Racin’ is at RnParks1@Juno.com. (to be continued)

Oscar Koveleski returned two years later to try his hand at the Brynfan Tyddyn Hillclimb on July 21, 1956, driving in the EM and FM class, car #44 in an MGTC, and completed 10 laps, but he did not finish the race. The pre-race practice led to the accident and death of Carl Gardner Jr and the end of racing at this popular, but tragically dangerous hill climb. (source: Racingsportscars.com).

13) Goodwood members meeting races, April 13-14, 2024 (continued). “In 2000, we were dressed for a Gala function held at the Goodwood house and we were near the front door when I told Elaine to wait, as I recalled seeing a young boy with arm-hand disability, in a hooded jacket and in a wheelchair waiting to catch a glimpse of some of the Super Stars of Motorsports, arriving near the front door. It was dark and with slight rain. I went back to the young boy, Mark Sanders, and gave him some pins and cards and invited him to visit us in the Paddock. He came the next day to visit us, and we stayed in touch with Mark through the years. This year he and his proud father came to visit us, and Mark was in a Motorized unit.
There were tears and big hugs as we had a special Old Yeller II shirt for him, and some gifts and he had some biscuits for us. Mark proudly has sustained successfully having a bright mind, only limited with a muscular movement disability;
priceless indeed.” Ernie & Elaine Nagamatsu at etnracer@gmail.com (to be continued).

14) Sir Jackie Stewart Honored by RRDC at Long Beach. The two bantered about their on-and-off-track relationship, with Mario Andretti finally responding with, “Well, Jackie is Jackie. We’ve known each other for eternity. He’s one of the individuals in my life that has inspired me to be a better driver. But our friendship was there from the beginning, and it got stronger and stronger as individuals and we look back and reflect on our time together and it brings smiles to our faces. And he has a great sense of humor. He showed that tonight beautifully. Also, for him to come forward and spend so much time to try to address the dementia situation is a credit to him. We try to participate in our own way to help that aspect. Jackie is a mover and shaker. We talked about the safety aspect of the sport, and how important that was. And now he wants to battle something that’s affecting him personally. Good for him.” Stewart replied, “I’m very proud that I was invited in the first place and I’m really so happy to have this financial commitment in our fight to Race Against Dementia. It’s such an important thing for my whole family, for the world. It’s very important. Very big. Thank you for the honor.” From: Judy Stropus

Spanky opened many doors for the boys by obtaining press passes and introducing them to many well-known racers such as Bob Bucher, Archie Means, Charlie Kurtz, Sherm Decker, Denise McCluggage and Graham Hill (who became a BARC member). All the while, the BARC Boys took hundreds of photographs, but more about this later. Their travels continued after high school and into the 1960’s as they followed racing as it evolved into a hugely popular amateur and professional sport.” From: Dave Nicholas (to be continued).

Remember when gas stations were places to get a job, to learn how to work on cars, build hot rods, a race car or two after hours, and hang out? Oh yeah, and buy gas with the change in your pocket? Well, Ed did all of that. “The very first job I had was in 1947 when I worked for Lou Baney who had a Golden Eagle gas station and speed shop called Hot Rod Haven on 52nd and Normandy in West LA. On Saturdays all the racer guys used to be there, like Isky.” At that point Ed was working for his dad and Baney part time. “I learned how to lay floors and put linoleum down asphalt tiles. I could’ve taken over the business from my father when he retired, but it just wasn’t exciting enough for me I didn’t like it.” To see the captioned photographs go to https://www.motortrend.com/staff/dick-martin/ . 21) Ice Speedway Racing History: As the sport and its riders developed further, we began to realize that much more traction could be achieved and that there needed to be a stud design that could be “tuned” or adjusted. To accomplish this in 1985 ICE adopted a new mandatory stud called the “Kold Kutter.” This nifty little design knocked seconds off lap times! Although ice wear did increase, the gain in traction and exciting racing action was worth it. Indeed, the lap times and speeds got so quick that several older riders of the time retired. http://icespeedway.com/history_ice_racing.html (to be continued)

47) Darryl Bassani, Celebration of Life for 4/28/24. Dedication, dreamer, designer, and doer only scrap the surface of an amazing man who loved good food and drink, loud music, fun with friends and motorcycles. Born in Staten Island, New York on December 12, 1944, the family moved to California in 1963. Engineering school, racing motorcycles Darryl liked the Golden State and the lifestyle it offered. Two stroke engines were the craze and Darryl became a regular at the local TT and motocross tracks. Like most racers he was always searching for more power. Darryl bought several aftermarket exhaust pipes but felt they were all lacking. The unknown of what makes a man think he can build a better mouse trap is a question that has no answer, but Darryl believed he could design and build an exhaust that performed better than the other pipes on the market. No money, no shop, no clue, were just minor issues, in his mind he thought it would be easy. Howie Zechner,

Dan Gurney not only teed it up at Indy with the best and toughest of American drivers, but he was also in a large sense responsible for the rear-engine revolution there. The circumstances were that Dan Gurney not only drove in the 1962 race, he paid the fare for the English designer, Colin Chapman, to go to the Speedway and investigate the possibility of putting a Ford power plant in a Lotus chassis. They made history. The next year, Chapman returned with two Lotus-Fords. Gurney piloted one and Clark the other. 54) Recollections of the Last Drag Race by Carl Olson. “My recollections of the Last Drag Race at Lions included much more than just winning in Top Fuel. Some of my most vivid recollections include; So many race cars that the pits were jammed to the max. There were even a few cars that had to pit along the return road, ’cause there just wasn’t another square inch of space in the pit area. So many spectators that the Sheriff made Steve Evans close the gates at around 6 pm. No problem for those locked out, though; they just pushed over the chain-link fences, and swarmed in like ants. Security initially tried to stem the tide, but quickly threw up their hands and walked away. I don’t know how many fans attended the Last Drag Race without purchasing tickets, but it would have to have been in the thousands. Suffice to say the place was packed like a can of Sardines.” For the full article and photos go to https://www.draglist.com/artman/ publish/

66) Ice Speedway Racing History: Their reaction times were just not competitive any longer. These specially designed, extremely sharp edged, directional ice racing studs can be “tuned” by riders and their mechanics to achieve excellent “side bite” for cornering and “forward drive” for straightaway and starting line traction. The Kold Kutter stud was so exceptional that once the riders got used to them, they were amazed to realize better traction than they could achieve racing their bikes on the summertime dirt tracks! The newest mandatory stud to be instituted by ICE on January 1, 1991, are “Silver Rockets Racing Studs.” They offer the best of all worlds for indoor ice racing and outdoor ice racing where ice wear is a consideration. Finally, the great man himself took the microphone and though he was in a wheelchair, his voice was still strong and full of life, and he regaled the audience with his wit and charm. “It’s been a lot of fun listening to all you racers,” he said. The audience was quiet as Miller continued, “all these guys were always trying to beat me, with my reputation and all, and getting me into trouble,” he said with a twinkle in his eye. “The police gave his mother a ticket for me, and she boxed my ears. It was 3 dollars or 3 days in the pokey in those days, and we always opted for the pokey. Money was really worth something in those days.” Miller spoke about the good old days of hot rodding and teased all those that had teased him at his tribute. Then he became serious and said, “If you want to know about the early days in hot rodding, go talk to my good friend Wally Parks,” and with that he handed the microphone back to Dick Martin and received a standing ovation. That said, I write my memoir for reasons like these: My 38-year-old “CLOSE CALLS,” The soul of Don Garlits, got over 1,000,000 YouTube views. For over for 3 decades TV car and race cameramen have copied Main Event’s notoriously inventive camera style: NATIONAL DRAGSTER’S Senior Editor Chris Martin dubbed them “Swoopy Shots,” and it stuck. I knew these shots executed with fluidity would inject lensmen with eyeball-popping visuals that would have major
ramifications. Like becoming the standard in hand-held cinematography in all forms of TV racing. A fact noted by print media. Dean Papadeas maineventvideo@earthlink.net . (to be continued).

Original attempted experimentation with quirky intrusive camera angles to get as close as possible. That’s simply what fans want to see! We showed it in spades. Swooping inside cockpits was prohibited by TV camera operators and never even thought of. Period. That changed. Progressive contributions to the sport to be sure but only the tip of the iceberg. More innovative
concepts on the same level are evidenced in all our shows. For all to see. So, it came as no surprise and really expected that TV drag racing shows changed to an upside-down new presentation virtually in their next show. Amazing. Dean Papadeas maineventvideo@earthlink.net . (to be continued).

83) Real Road Racing; The Santa Monica Road Races, by Harold Osmer and Phil Harms (serialized review). The Table of Contents breaks the book down into ten sections, with a Prelude and ending with an Afterword. The Prelude to Santa Monica is the first chapter and discusses the road racing that took place in America before the Santa Monica Road Race. The Long Island, New York Road Race was held from 1904-1910 over a length of 30.24 miles. Following that road course race was the Savannah, Georgia Road Course Race that ran from 1908-11. The Santa Monica Road Race began in 1909 and continued on through 1919. The Venice, California Road Race was run from 1910-1916. Other races were held in Milwaukee, San Francisco, Europe and elsewhere. These races were being organized a mere ten years after the invention and marketing of the automobile. The desire of the public to view these new machines became a frenzied mania. Harold Osmer is at program@hopublishing.com (to be continued)

87) Darryl Bassani, Celebration of Life for 4/28/24 (Continued). Of course, one quickly finds out that “nothing” is the only thing easy so making his own pipe proved to be a chore. Luckily a mixture of the college he was attending allowing him to use the machine shop equipment at night and the design(s) Darryl had in his head along with 15 or more prototype failures finally produced what he was looking for. It was a miss and hit that formed the foundation of his life’s work so in the summer of 1969 Bassani Manufacturing became a reality. A mad genius or visionary or just the right man for the job Darryl became well known and respected. Bassani Xhaust expanded into making pipes for race, street, off-road machines and even street cars and trucks. As the company grew Bassani sponsorship was a sought after commodity racers treasured. Among his numerous awards in 2009 Bassani was inducted into the Trailblazers Hall of Fame, and he was also a member of the Hot Shoe Hall of Fame. Howie Zechner, howie@razvideo.com. (to be continued)

88) BRASELTON, Georgia, April 28, 2024, HSR Prototype Challenge presented by IMSA race in Atlanta. James French, Driver – #25 Wolf Motorsports Ligier JS P320: “It was a fantastic rebound after Sebring. It was a very stressful last 10 laps at Sebring and this couldn’t have been more different. Alex did a fantastic first stint and we timed a yellow right, so we got a nice cushion there. It gave me a huge lead and the car was just an absolute joy to drive. It was just a matter of bringing it home in one piece and enjoying the ride. We are very happy to see the series growing, absolutely, there is a huge demand for a series like this. They are fantastic cars, super reliable, fast and great to learn in, so it is great to see it grow. We are hoping for even more competition and more teams joining in.” From: HSR Communications.

93) “Hot-Car Pits, San Fernando Raceway. Best Drag Racing Seat Ever! $1.00 (25¢ Pit Pass Optional).” What era of racing would you want to see in person? Written by Dave Wallace Jr, 5 May 2024 for Carspotting in Hemmings.com, photo by Don Morrill, see https://www.hemmings.com/stories/carspotting-2668124908/ .
Has there ever been a better vantage point than this one, overlooking the dragster pits as well as the drag strip just beyond? Front-row fans arrived extra early on Sundays to power park in a lot created when the commercial developers of San Fernando Raceway – one of America’s first purpose-built strips (est. spring 1955) – flattened the natural slope evident here. The unrecognized driver at left looks envious of the Ernie’s Camera Shudderbug, whose super-light Kent Fuller chassis (with round roll bar) and upswept Lujie Lesovsky body (fully enclosing the parachute pack) both set design standards in 1962 that endured for the rest of that decade. If this wasn’t auto racing’s golden age, what era would you pick to revisit in person? Date: circa 1962-’63. Location: San Fernando Valley Raceway; San Fernando, California. Source:

EDITOR ADDS: There are plenty of “canards,” “contrives,” “controversial,” and “wrongdoings” in Dave Wallace Jr’s excellent article as well as hilarious adds and cartoons, but it is Dave’s long sentences that leaves us gasping for air that is amusing. Such as, “Immediately afterwards, NHRA president and outgoing Petersen Publishing Company editorial director Wally Parks expressed buyer’s remorse to his editors at Hot Rod, Car Craft, Rod & Custom: ‘Due to limited field of Fuelers that appeared for participation in the Winternationals, and the great amount of difficulty a number of them provoked, it is doubtful that NHRA will continue to include these classes at its major events,’ began a February 19 internal document unearthed only a few years ago in the PPC archive (by longtime, now-ex-archivist Thomas Voehringer).’ ” DWjr is a MASTER of the LONG, LONG sentence, gasp, gasp.

95) CARSPOTTING in Hemmings.com, article by Dave Wallace Jr at aafueler@volcano.net. The hat atop the roll bar belonged to beloved Tom Jobe, whose emotional memorial service culminated in a blastoff of ashes and fire from the headers. Tom had personally guided construction of an early Chrysler Hemi that replicates the 100-percent-nitro combination developed in 1963 with partner Bob Skinner. Though neither Santa Monica resident ever learned to ride local waves, their unique combination of youth, longish hair and early struggles earned a derisive nickname from fellow racers: “those Surfers.” This tribute slingshot was built as an exhibition “cackle car” by superfan Bob Higginson, who became a close friend of Jobe’s during the years-long reproduction. Another old pal, writer Cole Coonce, shot video of the brief cackle, which you can view below: Tom Jobe’s Final Cackle (2-minute audio-visual treat) is at https://www.hemming

96) Route 66 Raceway has always been a special venue for Top Fuel fan-favorite Clay Millican. It was the site of his first-ever NHRA Top Fuel event and also an event he won in 2018. Then came last year for the veteran, who broke a winless streak of nearly five years when he won in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series’ return to the massive Chicago facility. Last season’s victory at the Gerber Collision & Glass NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by PEAK Performance propelled another successful season, and Millican would love to replicate that at this weekend’s event at Route 66 Raceway. 98) “Richard, your father Wally Parks, by his own acknowledgement being proud of his Cherokee background, earned his position of recognition in all his accomplishments as an outstanding person of Native American ancestry. Thank you, and others, who are working to preserve RACING HISTORY, an integral part of American Heritage, notwithstanding that some
are busy in their efforts to eradicate connections with the past. Here’s looking toward a Better Tomorrow.” Dale Cook
DALE: He certainly did profess pride in his ancestry and if you saw him and his brother, Kenny Parks, you couldn’t help but notice their black hair and brown eyes. There are plenty of photos with them in western clothes. On his paternal side he was probably Lenape (Delaware) and on the maternal side, most likely Cherokee. Native American heritage is common, even if just a small bit, in many Americans, but often hard to prove.
