Notes: Originally built on '31 Chevy frame rails, but much reworked by Garlits over the years. SR 1 was revamped to fit the taller Malone after Garlits temporarily retired from driving following a mid-year car fire. Oft-reworked car was then re-christened Swamp Rat 1-B. – RT | Set NHRA national speed record on 9/59 at Dunkirk NY (at 195.63). - SK; Malone's run of 195.633 mph on Sep. 27 at Dunkirk Airport was not recognized as official because he ran too late in the day to back it up, so it was regarded as an unofficial record. He also set an unofficial elapsed time mark at Buckingham Field in Florida on Nov. 22 with an 8.19 clocking. With Malone driving the Swamp Rat 1-B car at Golden Triangle Drag Strip in Oldsmar, FL, he set a new world record for 1/8th-mile of 142.85 mph on Dec. 27. - MB; Photo: Rocky Mountain Telegram, July 3, 1959 - MB |

Notes: Amazing run at Chief Auto Parts Nationals ushered in a new performance era. Dale Armstrong helped with the tuning on this National Record. Gwynn became the fastest person in NHRA history when he breaks the 5.30 second barrier by running 5.280, 5.261, 5.276, and 5.272. Gwynn also became the first person to break the 275 mph barrier with a run of 278.55. Earlier in the season, Darrell ran a quickest ever 5.342 as low qualifier at the NHRA Summers in Englishtown, NJ. The 5.261 was low qualifier at Ennis. Darrell won the World Finals over Joe Amato with best times of 5.326/274.22. |

Notes: Joe Amato logged the first 5.0-second run with a 5.090/287.72 (the best speed ever) at Ennis 10/87, only to have it bettered on the last run of the day by Gene Snow with a 5.089 at just 267.06 mph. Neither driver backed up their runs for records. Photo from Indy 1987. Earlier set national record at 279.24 at the 87 Southern Nationals, 282.13 at Indy (not backed up), and 280.98 at the Keystones. Ran 5.110 and 283.73 at 87 Cragar Classic. | Amato started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January It was an eight-car field and Joe's 5.66/247.93 qualified #4. Darrell Gwynn fouled against him in the first round, and Amato's piston burning 5.80/245.23 advanced. In the semifinals, he ran 5.77/247.25, but lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.72/250. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.42/270.27 qualified #6. He picked up to 5.38/268.49 in the first round, over Denver Schutz's 5.65/251. Gene Snow broke against him in round two, so he advanced with a 5.47/267.45. In the semifinals, his 5.50/264.93 beat Gwynn's 5.63/241. This put Amato into the final against Don Garlits. Based on ETs, the "Old Man" had the advantage, having run a best of 5.36 during eliminations. Sure enough, Garlits set Low ET in the final with a 5.29/270 to beat Amato's 5.41/258.54. Joe's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He beat Bob Strauss in the first round, with a 5.61/257 and in the semifinals he stopped Hank Endres. This set up a Gwynn vs. Amato final. Joe took the victory with a 5.47/265.48 (Top Speed and track record). A week later (March 22), he did it again, this time over a sixteen-car field at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 with a career-best (to this point) 5.32/274.80. He beat Endres in the first round, with a 5.37/272.89 while in round two another 5.32 at 276.14 (Top Speed) beat Larry Sutton. In the semifinals, he ran 5.39/257 to beat Larry Minor and for the second week in a row his final round opponent was Gwynn. Amato went on to win his eighth NHRA Career victory with a new career best of 5.29 at 274.05 to stop Darrell's close 5.30/266. He was at the Texas Motorplex on April 5 for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was another eight-car show and Joe qualified #7 with a 5.36/266.98. A strong 5.37/274.47 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.23/271. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Joe's 5.29/278.12 qualified #2 behind Gwynn's 5.28/274. These two would work their way to the final. Amato started his march by running 5.29/279.24 (new NHRA speed record) to beat a tire-smoking Gary Ormsby. Snow also smoked the tires against him in round two and Amato advanced with a 5.35/273.05. He got lucky in the semifinals when he ran an out of shape 5.73/253.87, but won because Earl Whiting was having his own troubles and only ran 5.86/192. This put the two former alcohol dragster drivers into the final again. This time Darrell took the win. Joe went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but lost a motor in the first round, and fell to Mike Brotherton. Back on the NHRA trail, he was at Baton Rouge on May 24 for the Cajun Nationals. He set a track record 5.30 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 272.89. Joe made his way to the final by beating Frank Bradley's 5.46/263 in the first round, with a 5.34/275.06 (Top Speed). In round two, Gwynn fouled against him and his 5.39/269.78 advanced. A semifinal 5.33/270 beat a tire blazing Hill and set up a final round meeting with Dick LaHaie. Both had run 5.33 in their semifinal races so it was close. It was a tight race, but Dick's 5.31/268 got the victory over Joe's 5.32/270.51 runner-up attempt. |

Notes: New Ron Dixon FED in 1969. Went down to KB's shop to look at new hemis. But Charlie Allen said he had a brand new injector to pan 426 he would sell them. So they bought it and bolted it into the FED. The next weekend at Saskatoon, we ran 242 and set the track record. Folks thought it was a bogus time. But then we ran went to SIR and went 245 or 246 Doner's track. For a time, we were the fastest front engine dragster in the world. - Terry Capp, Racin & Rockin Radio, 5/04/15 |

Notes: Both Garlits and Carl Schiefer are listed at 7.50/219.50 in this car. We need to confirm which one ran these numbers and obtain the best times for the other. (7.60/214.28 at Ubly MI -mg) Won March Meet (7.63) with Marvin Schwartz Runner-up in a second Garlits car. Collided with Ronnie Goodsell at Cecil Co (blower explosion & oil bath) and quit driving for a time, naming Carl Schiefer the driver going forward, this on the same weekend Tex Randall and Lou Cangelose were killed in crashes. |

Notes: Carl drove occasionally. Both Don Garlits and Carl Schiefer are listed at 7.50/219.50 in this car. We need to confirm which one ran these numbers and obtain the best times for the other. |

Notes: Jim Brissette car listed at 7.57/205 best in Herbert Cams ad. Confirm that it was this car and driver. | Bill started the year driving for Jim Brissette and on January 1 the team was at Riverside for the KFWB Drag Festival where Bill qualified in the eight-car field with a 7.90/199.54. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 7.92/194.38 against Bobby Tapia. On January 3, they were at Fontana for the UDRA race, but this time Bill lost fire in the first round. Pomona held an eight-car show on January 17 and Alexander qualified with a 7.99/200.44, but he was having clutch issues and withdrew from competition. A whopping 31 cars showed up to qualify for eight positions at Lions on January 30. Bill ran 7.71/186.32 to qualify #2. He stayed strong in eliminations, running 7.88/197.80 in the first round, and 8.01/189.06 in the semifinals when Zane Schubert fouled, but in the final, his off pace 8.42/182.18 finished runner-up to Ed Pink's "Old Master" driven by Mike Snively at 8.21. Both cars smoked the tires in the final. Bill ran a best of 8.02/200.00 in attempting to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he just missed making the show. He got a break when Ron Rivero had hurt his motor in qualifying and Alexander replaced him in the field. He almost went all the way. Bill got to the final when every car he raced fouled against him. In the first two rounds, it was first Tom McEwen and then Don Garlits who both saw red, and then in the semifinals, Connie Kalitta also fouled out against him. In the final, he ran 7.92/198.22, but lost to Don Prudhomme's 7.76/201 in the "Hawaiian." |

Notes: Bernstein started the '94 season by testing at Bakersfield at the end of January. He reset both ends of the track record to 4.80/300. He made four other runs but shut down early on each of them. Kenny qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.81/297.71. But in the first round, his 4.86/292.87 lost to Mike Brotherton's 4.83/284. Things didn't go much better at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona, where his 4.90/297.02 qualified #15, and he lost to Joe Amato in the opening round. It went even worse at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Bernstein failed to qualify for the first time since entering Top Fuel competition in '90. After running 4.96/284.81 on the opening day of qualifying, every other pass saw the car go up in tire smoke. His time was good for the first alternate. Gainesville went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #9 with a 4.89/296.44. An opening round 4.91/293.63 beat Jimmy Nix's 4.92/282, and a second-round 4.93/291.45 stopped Jim Head’s 5.03/276. But in the semifinals, he lost a motor against Scott Kalitta, and his fireballing 5.21/225.84 lost to Scott's 4.79/305. It was another bad day at Rockingham for the NHRA Invitational race in April. Kenny was the third alternate for the eight-car field with a 4.93/297.52. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 4.88/296.54 qualified #4, and a first-round 5.07/287.63 beat Stevie Foster's 5.16/279. But he lost to Eddie Hill in round two. Dale Armstrong was working hard on getting the team on the right track, and they showed progress at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Bernstein qualified #6 with a 4.89/296.83, but more importantly, his first-round 4.81/300.40 beat Nix. Why was it more important? It was the first time Bernstein ran 300 since he last did it at the '92 US Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Tommy Johnson Jr. in round two. He went home early at the NHRA Mopar Nationals at Englishtown, where he lost in the first round when he smoked the tires. Another first-round loss occurred at Columbus. In mid-June, he was there for the NHRA Springnationals and ran 4.95/298.40 to qualify #8. A slightly better 4.91/298.80 in the first round lost to Blaine Johnson's 4.90/297. Kenny was the first car over 310 with a 311.85 blast at the World Finals, followed by this 314.46 national record. Ran the 4.720 on the same clutch pass – in the final over McClenathan’s 4.798. |

Notes: Gary started the year by receiving the "Drag Racer of the Year" award on January 13 by the Motoring Press Association. The car's first time out in '90 was at Firebird Raceway's test and tune event in January. It was also the first time the team was using the new 3.20 rear gear mandated by NHRA for '90. Crew chief Lee Beard was having trouble getting the dragster to keep all eight cylinders firing for an entire run. Gary made five runs: a get acquainted 11.09/90.66, followed by a cylinder dropping 5.15/248.96. Another seven-cylinder 5.12/265.56 followed by his best run of the weekend, a 5.11/274.47 still with one hole not firing all the way through. His last pass was 5.15/269.54. The best 60-foot time was .930. By Pomona, Lee seemed to have things figured out for the NHRA Winternationals. Ormsby's 5.03/281.51 qualified #4, and a 5.04/279.50 in the first round, beat Connie Kalitta's 5.10/269. His 5.05/279.58 beat a tire-smoking Shirley Muldowney, who shut off in the second round. In the semifinals, Gary slowed to 5.12/273.47 in a loss to Dick LaHaie's 5.03/272. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, the team qualified way back in the #10 spot with a 5.07/279.50. Gary got around Lori Johns in round one, and in round two, he advanced when Ken Koretsky lost an engine. Muldowney went into a wheelstand and shut off against him in the semifinals, and Ormsby advanced into the final against Joe Amato. Gary tried hard in their race, but his 5.11 finished runner-up to Joe's 5.05. At Houston, for the NHRA Supernationals, Gary qualified #4 with a 4.98/284.62. But in round one, he smoked the tires and shut down to 7.55/110.47 to lose to alternate Leo Gastellum's 5.08/275. The 4.881 at the Topeka Heartland Nationals was the quickest ever but was not backed up. Gary backed up the 296 speed for the record. Photo from 1990 Grandnationals, Montreal. |

Notes: Garlits started the '85 season at Firebird Dragway in January for its Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was there for a best-of-three-match race against Gary Beck. Don won all three races to win the match. His 5.61/251.39 in the second race looked pretty strong, but it was nothing compared to his final race, where he reset both ends of the track record with a 5.45 (career-best to this point) at 259.36. Then things went bad. A wing strut broke, and the dragster ended up sliding down the track on its side before finally rolling a couple of times in the mud field that adjoined that racetrack. The car was a mess, but Don only suffered a bruised elbow. He was back behind the wheel a week later at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.87/256.41 qualified #12. He met Beck in the opening round of eliminations, and Don's 5.53/258 beat Beck's 5.68/235. A 5.50/262.39 covered Dick LaHaie's 5.73/240 in round two, but in the semifinal, both he and his opponent, Joe Amato, blew their engines. Joe coasted across the finish line first. Three cars qualified in the 5.5's at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, and Garlits' 5.55/259.36 (Top Speed) got the #3 spot in the field. in the opening round, he ran 5.61/255.82 to beat Jack Ostrander, but in round two, he was upset by Bill Mullins. They had a great race that saw Don's 5.68/254.09 lose to Mullins' 5.67/250. Garlits won his 24th NHRA national event at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.54/259.96. In the first round, he cracked 260 with a 5.62/261.93 that beat LaHaie's 5.75/249. He ran the fastest speed for a Top Fuel dragster (up until this time). Don's 5.62/265.48 buried Larry Minor's off-pace 6.32/156. He faced Amato in the final, and there was just no stopping Garlits on this day as his 5.51/258 easily beat Joe's 5.68/222. | Don ran 5.436/260.71 to qualify #1 at the Budweiser Summernationals & would win the race. | Also ran 259.36 at the 1985 Northstars. Don was a 5.56/266.27 winner at ADRA Kansas City. |

Notes: Four-day-old dragster won Ennis 89 with a 4.972 at 291.26 over Gwynn (holeshot over Darrell's 4.940). Quickest and fastest at the time (speed tied with Brotherton, but Ormsby got the records). Also ran 4.926 at 89 Chiefs for the backup. Also ran 291.63 national record at Keystones and 293.73. Became the fifth entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel with a 4.991 on June 10/1989, at Columbus. Photo from Columbus 1989. What can you say about Ormsby in '89, six NHRA National event wins and the Top Fuel championship? He started the season by qualifying #2 at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event with a 5.08, just behind Joe Amato's 5.07. These two worked their way to the final, where Gary's quick-leaving 5.16 got the win over Joe's 5.13. Gary showed his team's strength at Pomona when he made four runs in qualifying for the NHRA Winternationals. The times were 5.08/284.72,5.07/280.89, a #2 qualifier,5.04/282.22, and a 5.06/276.15. That was pretty impressive, but once again, Amato got the pole with his own 5.04. Gary started his run for the title by running a 5.07/277.52 over Shirley Muldowney's 5.13/275, a second round 5.07/280.19 beat Jack Ostrander, and in the semifinals, he beat Dennis Forcelle's 5.18/262 with a 5.05/278.81. In the final, he met Frank Bradley, and a consistent 5.05/278.81 beat Bradley's 5.28/260. He went two for two when he won the next race, the Supernationals at Houston. It was his fourth career win. He qualified way back in the #12 spot with a 5.11 and another 5.11 in the first round, beating Richard Holcomb. He was running like a bracket racer when, in the second round, he beat Lori Johns' 5.13 with yet another 5.11. He quickened his pace to a 5.08/278 in the semifinals to beat a tire-smoking Frank Cook. In the final, he met a strong running Joe Amato, who had set Low ET (4.99). Joe ran a final round 5.03/288 but lost to Ormsby's holeshot, 5.09/278.12. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals, where Gary ran a 5.09 to qualify #2. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.16 lost to Hank Endres' 5.13. It was then off to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.13/275.89 qualified #4. He beat Connie Kalitta and Amato in the first two rounds with times of 5.17/276.83 and 5.20/275.06, but he slowed to a 5.32/272.14 in the semifinal and lost to Eddie Hill's 5.20/267. Race five on the schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Gary took his first pole of the year with a 5.03/287.35. Robert Reehl lost to Ormsby's 5.16 in the first round, and in round two, Gary ran a 5.06/286 over Bradley's strong 5.10. In the semifinals, both he and Darrell Gwynn ran 5.04s, but the Castrol car won. In the final, he took his third win of the season with a 5.03/287 beating Hill. Race six was the Cajun Nationals, where a 5.15/284.90 (Top Speed) qualified #2. Frank Hawley beat him in the first round when Gary smoked the tires. The next stop on the tour was the Springnationals. Gary qualified #1 with National Trail's first four-second pass, a 4.99 at a track record speed as well at 287.53 (tied by Gene Snow). He beat Rudy Toepke in the first round, with a 5.03, and a second round 5.12/264 beat Forcelle, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Amato. The tour shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals. There, Ormsby used a 5.14/279.24 to qualify #2. He ran runs of 5.11/282.39 (Low ET & tying Top Speed) over Pat Dakin, 5.18/278.46 over Forcelle, and a semifinal 5.19/276.83 over Johns to meet Dick LaHaie in the final. Gary got his fourth win of the season with a 5.15/278.98, beating Dick's 5.21/274. Englishtown was next, and a 5.19/278.81 qualified #9 for the Summernationals. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bradley. Gary beat Frank in the first round and went on to beat Earl Whiting with a 5.17/280 and Hill in the semis with a 5.18/281. In the final, he met LaHaie again, but this time, the roles were reversed, with Dick's 5.11/282 beating Gary's 5.24/271.57. Next came the Mile High Nationals in Denver. A 5.25/270.43 in the thin air was good enough to qualify #3. He beat Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.27/270 beat Hill in round two. He picked up to a 5.22/264 in the semis to beat Johns' 5.27/271. In the final, he ran Amato, and an off-pace 5.33/270.75 gave Gary his second runner-up in a row. The tour moved on to the California Nationals run on July 30. Ormsby ran a 5.05/289.29 to qualify #2. In the first round, he beat Cook's 5.19/269 with a 5.09/289.85 (Top Speed), but in round two, the car fell off to a 5.52/282.39 that lost to Jim Head's 5.21/271. Seattle was the next stop for the Seafair Nationals. A 5.05/285.44 qualified #3. He beat Gwynn in the first round with a 5.04/283.82. A 5.11/280.81 beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.14/282 in round two. Unfortunately for Gary, a semifinal 5.14/279.15 lost to Amato's 5.07/273. The next event was not to Gary's liking. He qualified well at the Northstar Nationals with a 5.15/282.75, but in the first round, against Kalitta, he crashed and totaled his car when he hit the guardrail. He was OK, but the car was not. |

Notes: Tom beat the Greek at a match race at Minnestora Dragways in May with a best time of 7.93 at 212.20. Woody Gilmore built the chassis for this car after Hoover's previous half-year-old rail was stolen. But it was the gorgeous Tom Hanna-hammered aluminum body that this car is best remembered for. No list of the most beautiful FEDs omits this racecar. The swoopy tailpiece included streamlined "portholes" into which Hanna incorporated custom woodgrain inserts. Hoover's dragster became known as the "Fishbowl Car" because, while under construction, Hanna joked to a magazine writer that Hoover was going to put a fish aquarium in there. Hoover ran the car for two years, then sold it. It was raced for a couple more years, then disappeared. It has since been recreated (with Hoover's and Hanna's blessing) by Creative Metalworks in Minnesota. - RT |

Notes: The Speed Sport modified roadster campaigned by Lyle Fisher, Gary "Red" Greth, and Don Maynard, one of the more popular cars of its era, produced record-setting performances from 1956 through the early 1960s. Powered by a 354-cid rear-mounted Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Other records include an 8.03/175.78 in March 1960. A 180.72 was backed up by a 179.28 on October 2/1960. The Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark was 183.67 eight days later in Alton, Ill. The Speed Sport roadster remained competitive well into the mid-1960s, qualifying for Top Fuel at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals and making its final appearance at the 1964 Bakersfield March Meet. Notes: Sport's first 300 mph run to become the first member of the Slick 50 300 mph Club. Runner up to Eddie Hill in the final of the 1992 Gatornationals. Ran 4.823 low qualifier at the Gators. Set 4.846 national record at 92 Supernationals. Chiefs 4.792 was low qualifier. Low qualifier at Houston at 4.859 and Keystones at 4.879. Also 293.63 and 296.93 at 92 Houston, and 295.66 at 92 Maple Grove. | Kenny started his '92 season at the NHRA Winternationals, qualifying #11 with a 5.04/285.98. A first-round 5.91/281.86 beat Gene Snow and a 5.01/280.54 beat Jack Ostrander in round two. In the semifinal, his 4.98/282.39 beat a quicker and faster Joe Amato at 4.95/283. In the final, a 4.96/281.07 beat Jim Head's 4.98/279. At the next race, the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Kenny just made the show, qualifying #15 with a 5.15. A first-round 5.07/276.24 lost to Pat Austin's 4.99/287. As mentioned above, he set a 4.84 NHRA record at the NHRA Supernationals. He qualified #8 with a 4.94 and made it into the final against Amato. Amato won with a 4.91/292 to Bernstein's troubled 7.19/117.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a 4.82 at the sport's first 300 mph run, a 301.70. He backed it up for a new NHRA speed record. In the actual race, he ran a first-round 4.88/298.30 over Dannielle Deporter and a second round 4.87/299.30 over Tommy Johnson Jr. In the semifinal, he ran a wheelstanding 5.57/263.46 over a tire smoking Mike Brotherton. In the final, Eddie Hill's 4.84/290 beat Kenny's shutting off 9.43/86.40. At the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham in April, Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.01/288.64 (Top Speed), but he lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.46 in the first round, with an off pace 5.78. The next NHRA stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Kenny qualified #1 with a track record 4.85/296.15. He beat Austin's 5.00/284 in the first round, with a 4.93/298.50 (Top Speed), in round two his 5.01/294.69 lost to McCulloch's 4.98/285. The sixth race of the NHRA schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 4.98/293.82 qualified second. He lucked out in the first round, when both he and Johnson Jr. smoked the tires. Bernstein's 5.54/257.43 came out on top. In round, he got some revenge on McCulloch who had stopped him at the last two events by running a 4.96/295.85 (Top Speed) over Ed's 5.11/281. In the semifinals, Brotherton's 5.00/288 beat a tire smoking Bernstein. Things didn't go to well for the Budweiser Team at the Springnationals. First they qualified way down in the #7 spot with a 5.05/287.72. Then in the first round, another 5.05 at 289.76 lost to Austin's 4.96/289. They more than made up for it by winning the next NHRA race, the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.01/284.99. A first-round 5.07/288.64 beat Robert Reehl and in the second round, a 5.06/287.90 advanced when McCulloch broke. In the semifinals, he faced Al Segrini in Billy Lynch's car and once again his competition broke and he advanced with a 4.98/290.88. In the final he was up against Don Prudhomme. His 5.03/292.58 (Top Speed) beat the "Snake's" close 5.06/271. The next race was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Kenny was still the only driver that had ran 300 mph and he did it again here when he ran 4.88/300.40 to qualify #2 behind McCulloch. Unfortunately, in the first round, Dale Armstrong dialed too much power into it and Kenny smoked the tires and lost to Ostrander. Things went much better at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Once again Kenny qualified #2 behind McCulloch with a 4.93/284.53. He ran a 5.11/276.32 over Junior Kaiser's 5.38/247 in the first round, only a 12.26/75.34 was needed to advance past round two after Hill couldn't return after blowing a motor in his first-round race. In the semifinals, Bernstein's 5.15/275.56 beat Doug Herbert's 5.32/258. In the final he met up with McCulloch. What promised to be a good race was ruined when Ed smoked his tires and Kenny ran 5.16/268.57 for his third win of the year. The NHRA tour then went to Sonoma for the California Nationals. Kenny qualified #8 with a 5.01/290.41. A first-round 5.07/286.80 lost to Mike Brotherton's 5.00/282. |
