Notes: Injected fuel AWB. Same as Dorsey car in other 1966 entry, just different paint. Ran car in 1965 too. Early-mid 1966, replaced this with Barracuda, which they sold before the end of 1966. Warner Robins GA 1966 (4/29/66 National Dragster) |

Notes: Injected fuel, TorqueFlite-113.5" AWB. This car replaced their 1965 AWB Plymouth which they ran earlier in 1966. Had two different paint schemes in 1966, both posted here. They sold this car before the end of the 1966 season, to Bly (Alan)& Walker, who ran it as the "Crazy Cuda through 1967. |

Notes: Photo shows the car with a teardrop hood before he added Hilborn injectors (late in the year). If running fuel, that would've relegated it to match races, but previously this car was a successful NHRA-legal B/FXer. According to Charles Morris' book "Total Performers: Ford Drag Racing In The 1960s," this was the only 1965 Fairlane commissioned by FoMoCo to be built to '64 T-bolt specs. As with the others, work was done by the Dearborn Steel Tubing Company. The 3,800-lb car was initially equipped with a 427 hi-riser and then moved to a Cammer. Notes: Injected fuel. 1964 Chevelle with 1965 front end. Ran car into early 1966. | Durham kept pace with the funny car revolution of 1965, updating the Chevelle with 1965 sheetmetal and ading injectors and nitromethane. Those changes netted bests of 9.56 and 150 mph. - From "#48: Top NHRA Drivers of All Time" |

Notes: Injected fuel. Durham started the 1966 season with the Chevelle he ran in 1965. Then he came out with this Corvair. Partway through the 1966 season, he had the car stretched. He ran the stretched Corvair into the 1968 season. Durham sold this Corvair to Gene Altizer, who ran the car as the "Weasel" in 1969 as an A/FC. - DD | Best ET for '66 was 8.61. - RH | Malcolm debuted the Corvair for the first time at a best two out of three match race against Phil Bonner on May 1 at Cecil County. He didn't do so well the first time out as he lost all three races. In the first race, he fouled. In the second race, the car stalled and refused to refire. And in the third race, he had the windshield pop out on a 9.36/117.34 pass that lost to Bonner's 9.02/143. More bad luck followed at Great Meadows on May 15 when he faced off against Bob Harrop. Once again, he lost all three races with a best of 9.9/142. On August 13, he was at Cecil County for a four-car race. In his first race, his 9.36/150 lost to Dick Landy's 8.76/144. Durham turned in the first "eight" by a Chevy at Cecil in the next race when he ran 8.96/157 only to lose to Mike Buckel's 8.63/163 in the "Ramchargers" car. In the final race, Durham ran 9.09/155 to turn back Del Heinelt's 9.21/150 in the "Seaton's Shaker" Chevelle. Later in the year, he had the Corvair running well enough to beat Ronnie Sox at Aquasco on August 14 in a best-of-five match. Sox had the best times in winning the first two races running in the eights, while Durham lost with 9.28/153.84 and 9.21/155.70 times. In the third race, Sox slept and lost to a 9.27/152.80 with a motor destroying 9.15/150. This let Malcolm solo in the last two races for the match race win. Durham faced off against Roger Lindamood's "Color Me Gone" Charger at National Trail on September 10. Lindamood had troubles, and Durham won two straight with times of 9.13/152.86 and 9.16/149. In October, the Corvair was in the eights, beating Bill Flynn in a best-of-five match race at Englishtown. He lost the first race but came back to win the next three with runs of 8.89/160, an 8.86 best also at 160, and a 9.00/160 to win the match. |

Notes: Injected here but added a supercharger and went as quick and fast as 7.98/178. The Strip Blazer V Corvair was offered for sale by Durham in the 10/27/67 Drag Times, who described it as "one of the world's fastest unblown Chevy-powered machines, with a best of 8.35 at the ('67) Super Stock Nationals." Car was offered completely at the time, sporting Hilborn injection. – RT | On April 16, Durham was at Southeastern International for a best of three match against Phil Bonner's newly lengthened SOHC Mustang. Malcolm didn't do so well as he lost two straight, but the two raced there again on Sunday (April 17), and the tables were turned. Bonner won the first race, but in their second race, Phil was overly confident that he won, and he pulled the 'chute early only to watch the Corvair zoom past for the win. The Mustang blew its transmission and was done for the day, so Durham ran a solo 8.98/166.50 to win the match. On May 28, Durham was at Englishtown for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. Malcolm didn't run too well that day as he lost two straight when the Corvair kept getting out of shape. He made runs of 9.52/157.33 and 9.31/156.79, while Lawton was long gone with runs of 8.62 and 8.81 at 164. |

Notes: This particular car was first built as a 2% relocation for the 1965 Winternationals, where Eckstrand drove it in A/FX class. He also raced it in this form at the 1965 AHRA Winternationals at Beeline Dragway. It was converted to full AWB specs soon after by the factory-employed Golden Commandos team members; it toured sparingly compared to some of the other Chrysler factory-authorized AWB entries. However, on August 7/1965, at York US 30 Dragway, Eckstrand won the legendary Super Stock Nationals 'Unlimited Fuel' class title over Dick Landy's Dodge. The Top Stock Heads-Up crown for the event went to Bobby Harrop's Dodge sometime after 3:00 AM in the morning. Eckstrand retired from driving after this event. The car ran low 9's-high 140s in 1965, uncertain if Eckstrand or Dallafior ran those numbers. Dallafior and the Commandos team drove the car through the end of 1966. It ended up being located by Steve Atwell through a chance acquaintance in the late 1980s, though in dilapidated form. In 2009, collector Mike Guffey completed a restoration begun by the late Dick Towers. That year, race car restorer Erik Lindberg drove the car to several 60-foot launches in Kearney, Nebraska. - GS | Elton 'Al' Eckstrand passed away after a short illness in 2008. A was at Cecil on July 31 for a best-of-five match against Phil Bonner and his Falcon. Eckstrand got to go home early as he only had to make three runs as he beat Bonner three straight. His first two passes were 9.93/138 and 9.91/138.46. Bonner fouled against him in the third race, and Al made an easy pass to win the match. |

Notes: Injected fuel AWB. Eckstrand was entered in a race at Lions early in 1966, not sure if he drove in 66 or not. Ran car in 65, John Dallafior drove this in 1966. May have crashed it. Long Beach CA 1966 (Ad in 2/25/66 Drag World) |
