Notes: Running injected fuel on this run right after Faubel received it. The car was built by Cotton Owens as the 'Cotton Picker' under direction and financing from Chrysler in early 1965, with a mid-mounted 426 Hemi on carbureted gasoline. For part of the season, NASCAR shoe David Pearson drove this car in southern match races (and at the first Spring Nationals at Bristol). Bud Faubel got it when the Chrysler boycott of NASCAR ended late that summer. For most of that ownership and match raced only sparingly, his crew chief George Weiler was the car's primary driver when it was repainted soon after as one of Faubel's "The Honker" Dodges, and it became Weiler's "Mr. Violent" entry in 1967/1969 after Faubel retired from racing. The car subsequently survived as a bracket bomber and, most recently, as a wheelstander. Now owned by Nebraskan Reed Koeppe, it will be restored. York PA 1965 (7/17/65 Drag News) - Norman Hechtkoff

Notes: Bud Faubel's factory success got him one of the factory cars converted by Amblewagon in late 1964-early 1965. He DROVE it in white paint from Detroit to Chambersburg, PA, upon receipt to break in the driveline for the 1965 race season. Soon after, this car won the AHRA Winter Nationals, becoming the first 'funny car' titleholder. Faubel ran The Honker first on gas, then injected fuel, posting a runner-up to Bobby Harrop at the 1965 Super Stock Nationals 'Top Stock Heads Up' eliminator as well. This AWB car was also run in 1966 and was one of three factory cars Faubel drove in 1965. The others were the former Owens, Pearson Cotton Picker, and a twin-turbo Dodge experimental. This car survived in remarkably good shape, was found with most of its original paint intact and is now owned by Mopar parts authority Jim Kramer. The photo shown is likely from Maple Grove Raceway in 1966 and appears classed for NASCAR's Unlimited Stock division. Bud was at Dover Drag Strip on April 25 for a best of five match race against Doc Burgess. Doc's Plymouth was an all-steel Super Stock car. Due to this, it was decided to give Burgess a two-tenths handicap. In the first race, Doc's 10.73 beat Faubel's 10.47, but Bud came back to win the next two races with times of 10.37/132 and 10.38/136. Burgess was given a three-tenths handicap start for the fourth race, but Faubel's Dodge was still too strong as Bud ran 10.31 to win the match over Doc's 10.69. He faced Pappas, who had got back in on the "break rule" in the final, and Lee fouled while Gene took an easy ride for the win.

Notes: Bill Flynn was a former paratrooper released from the Army in '62. After he got home, he went through a series of cars, starting with a 409 Chevy and then going to Mopar products from '63 on. In '65 and the early part of '66, he ran a Hemi-powered '65 Coronet under the name of "Yankee Peddler." In Mid-'66, he debuted his new 1,800 lb. Barracuda. Flynn used a fairly stock 426 Hemi. The rods, pistons, and valves were stock, as was the compression ratio at 12.5:1. It used aluminum heads and an aftermarket Crane cam. Hilborn injectors fed the motor its fuel. The engine was set back in the chassis 18" for better weight distribution. A TorqueFlite transmission delivered the power back to a Mopar rear with 4.56 gears. (2/67 Drag Racing)Bill was in Connecticut on June 26 for a best of five match race against Bill Lawton. Flynn had beaten the "Mystery 9" Mustang several weeks earlier, and this was a rematch. Since their last match, the "Yankee Peddler" had been lowered five inches front, and a mini-spoiler had been added to keep the front end down. Flynn got out first in their first race, but Lawton drove around him to win with a 9.34/144 to Flynn's 9.63/127.11. Lawton got a little sideways off the line in the second race, and that was enough for the Mopar to win with a 9.22/147.54. Lawton really found some hp in the third race as he reset the track record with an 8.71/158 to easily win. In the fourth race, Lawton won again, getting a two-car holeshot and stretching it out with an 8.91/157 to win the match. Glass front end, doors, deck lid. Lots of history. Injected fuel, A&A Engineering fiberglass body-113 "-114" Bill Flynn adjustable wheelbase chassis. Flynn ran the car in 1967, and then Al Hanna drove it for him in '67, then Hanna bought it and called it "Phantom." Hanna ran the car into 1968 when he sold it to George Whalen, who ran it as the "Rebel Cuda" into 1970. Car, more or less, still exists. February 1967 Drag Racing magazine says the car went 8.70/160 in 1966. Bill ran a confirmed 8.80 at Englishtown (9/23/66 Drag News) and 156.52 at Connecticut (11/04/66 Drag Times). This car is currently being restored (2011).
