Notes: 15"Altered Wheelbase, CAE Tube front Axle-15" engine setback-2250 lbs. Full Aluminum Interior. 426 Stage III Wedge, Crane Roller, Hilborn Injection on Fuel, Vertex Magneto. Ran during 1966/67/68 seasons. Ran mainly 1/8 Mile Match Races around Central & Southern Illinois. All chassis & Engine work was performed by the then 25-year-old Mike Gaines in the garage at the rear of his Speed Shop (Mike Gaines Speed Sport, Mattoon Illinois) Crew was David Moberly, Mike Kasey, Gary Coker, Ray Gebhart, Darrell Smiley and Jeff Gaines. Always ran hard, but could really never outrun the more powerful Hemis. Gaines' engine was a 426 max Wedge (Hilborns on Fuel)., but probably the strongest running "wedge" in the country as no one else even took the time or trouble to run this outdated engine., but as a kid, it was the only motor he owned so I guess he made the best of it. Most notable Match Races were against 1) Ed Ranchanski's ChicagoLand Mercury Dealer Comet Roadster (lost), 2) The Kentucky Colonel 65 Hemi Dodge (lost) and 3) Arnie Beswick's Grocery Getter II Tempest Station Wagon, Injected 421 Pontiac (Gaines won that Match Race). The car was sold to someone in Burlington, Vermont, through a National Dragster Advertisement in 1968. Whereabouts of the car today is unknown. If anyone has any details on this car that was delivered to Burlington, Vermont, in 1968 please contact Mike Gaines at 559/593/1977. Gaines lives in California now. |

Notes: Injected fuel AWB. Pete Gates was an unknown when he began his funny car career by buying Dyno Don Nicholson's 1965 Comet. Dyno actually drove his "old car" in the first couple of races while Pete got used to the car. Putting an Art Carr automatic transmission in the "old '65 Comet" and entering the 1966 Super Stock Nationals, Pete blew away all the big names in funny car racing like Dyno, Fast Eddie Schartman, Beswick, and others to win in his first time out. In 1967, Pete got a new car with a leftover 1966 Comet fiberglass body on a brand new Logghe chassis. The Gate Job was born. Pete won a few match races with the Gate Job, including the Memorial Day Olympics of Drag Racing at Great Lakes Dragway. In mid-year, Pete received a new 1967 Comet body. It was all red with two white stripes down the top, unlike the blended, saucy paint job of the original Gate Job. For 1968, Gates got a 1968 Cougar with a new Logghe chassis. Pete ran the Gate Job Cougar into 1969, then hung up his driving gloves. Car was run by Fred Gendian in 1968. (Photo and text provided by Daryl Huffman) | Confirmed 8.92 at New York National 66 per 9/9/66 Drag News. |

Notes: Hilborn-injected, 427 SOHC/Art Carr-prepped Ford C-6 trans combo. This "high mileage" former Dyno Don car surprised a lot of newer plastic fantastics in '66. |

Notes: In 1967, Pete got a new car that consisted of a leftover 1966 Comet fiberglass body on a brand-new Logghe chassis. (Photo and text provided by Daryl Huffman). | 427 SOHC/Art Carr-prepped C-6 Ford combo. 4-page feature in 5/67 Popular Hot Rodding. | Pete Gates was relatively unknown throughout most of '66. It wasn't until he purchased "Dyno Don" Nicholson's '65 Comet and won the Super Stock Nationals with it that people began to take notice. Gates's new Comet for '67 used a 116" Logghe-built chassis. The engine was an Earl Wade-built 427 SOHC that used M/T rods and 10.5 pistons. Crane supplied the cams. The nitro mix was fed to the engine by Hilborn injectors. It used a three-speed C-6 automatic transmission and weighed 1,940 lbs. The Fiberglass Comet body weighed 200 lbs. and came from Plastigage. The body featured a safety trap door in the roof as a second exit. The car made its first appearance at Phoenix for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran a best of 9.29. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran in the S/XS class. In the first round of class runoffs, he fouled away an 8.76 against "Jungle Jim" Liberman, who won with a 9.00. On April 23, Pete was at Thompson, Ohio, for a best two out of three match race against Al Graeber. Pete won two straight over the Charger. On April 30, he was at Lakeland for the first annual Supercharged Showdown. The Comet was the only unblown car in the nine-car field. In the first round, Pete had transmission trouble and lost with a 9.44/140.40 to Bobby Wood's 9.02/165. Another best-of-three match race was run at Milan on May 7 against Bruce Larson. In the first race, Pete's 8.54/170 beat Bruce's 9.14/154, but Larson came back to win the next two races and the match with runs of 8.71/157 over Gates' 8.84/158 and 8.78/158 over a slightly off track 9.30/147.61. Shortly after that, he was at US 30 for a UDRA race. He won the injected fuel Funny Car class with a final round 9.40/163.01 over Dave Pinta's 9.78/152. On June 17, Gates was at York US 30 for an eighteen car show. Unfortunately, his Comet turned into a fireball when his torque converter blew in the first round. He slowed to 9.24/116.12 in a loss to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Pete was OK, but the car was damaged. On August 29, Gates won the UDRA Circuit race at New York National. He ran a best of 8.61/166.66, beating Roger Lindamood in the final. |

Notes: Gordon scored a surprise win at a July 17 UDRA meet at US-131 Dragway in Martin, MI. He had not even been on the circuit roster prior to the event. -- RT | ET is average ET through June 1971, confirmed from Ken Dennett's 1971 list of UDRA cars. We need best ET for that year. |

Notes: Four door injected fuel AWB car may have run a 427 in this at some point in 1966. Definitely ran a 396. Gowland ran this car in 1965/66 early 1967. Later in 1967, ran a stretched Chevy II roadster. Unsure if it is this same car. ET Mohawk Dragway, NHRA Ontario CA 4/66 (4/15/66 National Dragster) mph Cayuga ON 1966 (12/02/66 Drag News) - DD |
