He ran this car into 1967 before debuting his first flip-top Mustang. - DD | At the car's debut at Biloxi, it was still running a 427 wedge. For the first time out, he didn't do too bad; Grove defeated Tom Sturm's Corvair in a best of three match. He also reset the track record to 9.50 at 144.92. (See separate entry for the Wedge-powered version). Grove was at Virginia Beach on July 9 for a best of three match against Huston Platt. Huston's "Dixie Twister" Nova was billed as the nation's fastest Chevy. Grove got a good leave in their first race, and his 8.48 beat Platt easily. A handicap was accidentally given to Huston in the second race, and although Tom followed the Nova to the stripe, it was decided that he won that race as well. Grove was already declared the winner of the match, but the two had another race, and Grove won again, this time with an 8.46. He also ran 8.53 at Virginia Beach, VA 1966 (6/24/66 Drag News). Tommy ran the 171.42 mph at Fremont, CA 1966 (11/11/66 Drag World).
