Notes: Injected fuel 110" AWB. Greer ran the car in 65, 66, and 67. During the 1967 season, he bob-tailed this car. The 65 Dodge Tension car was a factory hot rod from Dodge originally. It later evolved into one of the first-ever funny cars. It was the first to have center steer with the driver relocated over the rear end and a formed roll cage much like what you see today. Dad did all work. Great story: Shirl flipped a coin to see if he would go to a race in Warner Robins or race across the country to live and race in SoCal. He met his future wife on a blind date in Warner Robins and ended up staying there for 20 years. - Brian and Van Greer on the Wally Bell Show, 2/15/12 | Confirmed 8.95 at York 66 per 8/12/66 Drag News. mph (October 1966 Popular Hot Rodding). He ran this car into 1967 before debuting his first flip-top Mustang. - DD | At the car's debut at Biloxi, it was still running a 427 wedge. For the first time out, he didn't do too bad; Grove defeated Tom Sturm's Corvair in a best of three match. He also reset the track record to 9.50 at 144.92. (See separate entry for the Wedge-powered version). Grove was at Virginia Beach on July 9 for a best of three match against Huston Platt. Huston's "Dixie Twister" Nova was billed as the nation's fastest Chevy. Grove got a good leave in their first race, and his 8.48 beat Platt easily. A handicap was accidentally given to Huston in the second race, and although Tom followed the Nova to the stripe, it was decided that he won that race as well. Grove was already declared the winner of the match, but the two had another race, and Grove won again, this time with an 8.46. He also ran 8.53 at Virginia Beach, VA 1966 (6/24/66 Drag News). Tommy ran the 171.42 mph at Fremont, CA 1966 (11/11/66 Drag World). |
