Notes: Harrell's "Retribution II" began its career as a test bed for Bill Thomas Racecars in Anaheim, CA. Named "Bad Bascom" and built for roadracing, it featured a 377 cid Corvette mill with Rochester fuel injection, a 4-speed trans, Corvette Sting Ray IRS and heavy-duty underpinnings throughout. The hood, front fenders, doors and deck lid were fiberglass; windows were plexiglass. This car immediately predated the three Bill Thomas-built '63 fastback Chevy IIs that would soon find their place in drag racing history. -- RT | Injected, wheelie-prone 2,900-pound AWB 4-speed car. Ran alky or nitro. These times are nitro. The earliest version of this car (as featured in 5/65 SS&DI) used the 409-based 427 cid engine out of his Z-11 '63 Chev. (This was the same engine he had also used in his '64 Chevelle match racer.) Harrell soon switched to the new 427 semi-hemi. Notes: This was a Bill Thomas race car. Sold to Denny Syar in 1967. Dick Harrell and his '66 Chevy II were famous match racers in the early funny car wars. This was Harrell's second match bash Chevy II. Chevrolet's Chevy II was supposed to be an economy car, but became Chevy's best competition for Ford's Mustang on the nation's drag strips. The injected big block 396 Chevrolet was not the perfect engine for racing, but Harrell made do. Dick ran the engine on low levels of nitro. Harrell was still based out of Albuquerque, New Mexico at the time. Nickey Chevrolet, the famed high performance car dealer, sponsored the lightweight Chevy II. Harrell ran a known best of 9.44 at 144 with the little car. - BS | Dick was at Fremont on April 25 for a best of five match race against Hubert Platt and his SOHC powered Mustang. Harrell won three straight with times of 9.96/141.06, a 9.98/145.39 and a 9.69/144.69. Platt was having trouble with his "Georgia Shaker" and could not get out of the ten second bracket on this day. ET Cordova IL 1966 (6/24/66 Drag News) mph Green Valley 1966 (9/09/66 Drag World) | Dick Harrell. March 1966 Bakersfield. Funny cars ran in two classes. Harrell's car was one of three entries in the "2600 lb." class. The others were Kelly Chadwick and Del Heinelt in 'Seaton's Shaker'. Del ran a 10.14 @149.18 to defeat Chadwick, and raced Harrell in the final. Harrell won with a 9.98 @145.86 to the Shaker's 10.41 139.36. Paul Hutchins |

Notes: Non-flip-top Camaro. Originally listed as 8.681/171.42. Replaced those with times from OCIR Mfg. Meet at 11/25/67. We need to confirm that those times were run in this car. Ran 8.30/172.80, 8.01/185.18, and 7.94/180.72. | Dick was at Thompson on July 3 for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. The Mustang driver was considered one of the top FCs at the time. Dick didn't let that bug him as he beat Lawton three straight. In their first race, Harrell got out on Lawton and won with an 8.69. The second race saw Harrell run 8.14/169.17 to win, and in the final race, Bill finally got the jump on the Camaro, but Dick drove around him to win with an 8.43/165.74. It was hard to believe the engine was a stock 427 Chevy except for a Howards cam and the injectors. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/25/67 |

Notes: This car was introduced in mid-'67 as Dick Harrell's new roadster, with driving duties to be shared with partner Jim Guthrie. The Chevy II-turned-spaceship boasted a Hilborn-injected 427 semi-hemi with a 4-speed trans in a 2" diameter round-tube chassis manufactured by Edco Brake Co. The jazzed-up Chevy II roadster body was all-glass, but was not a flip-top. Photos show a separate one-piece fenders-hood assembly removable for engine access. The impressive-looking car got favorable coverage at roll-out, then promptly disappeared from the monthly hot rod press. (At roll-out and initial test runs car had no sponsor signage, but had "Dick Harrell" prominently featured on the rear fenders with driver Guthrie's name in smaller script behind the front wheelwell. Harrell's time with roadster seemed extremely brief, but Guthrie continued to campaign it for years. - RT |

Notes: A first-round win by Dick Harrell at 8.17 defeated Jack Chrisman's 8.32 on May 4 at OCIR. We need to confirm that Dick was driving this car, not one of the flip-tops he drove this year. - Ron Howard | In the fall of 1966, Don Hardy built a 1967 Camaro for Dick "Mr. Chevrolet" Harrell at his metal works facility in Floydada, Texas. The vehicle was completed in time for its first outing in late March or early April under the Yenko Chevrolet banner, a partnership that contributed to Harrell's early success. Hardy's build was based on a 2x3-inch rectangular tube chassis, incorporating the production rear clip, moving the wheels forward by 8 inches, and extending the front end by approximately 15 inches, yielding a wheelbase of 115 inches. The doors and trunk lid were made of fiberglass, and with an iron big-block Chevrolet engine, a Turbo 400 transmission, and an Olds/Pontiac axle, the vehicle weighed around 2,300 pounds. Notes: Injected fuel. This was the car Bob Harrop received and used for S/S class eliminations at the 1965 Nationals, and began converting to match race trim sometime in late 1965. He may have raced it while doing the engine setback conversion work on his 1965 Amblewagon-built AWB Dodge. That car crashed in its rebuilt debut at Cecil County in the spring of 1966, and Harrop bought the former Ramchargers AWB Dodge to finish the season. According to the magazine caption, fellow Mopar driver Ken Montgomery is driving the car here at Atco late in the '65 season. Disposition of this 1965 A990-code Dodge is unknown. Aditional wheelbase mods are also unknown. |
