Notes: Injected fuel, Torqueflite. Honea ran this car in 1965 as well. Before 1966 was over, Honea moved to St. Louis and was driving the "Executioner," an injected fuel Dart. Pic shows the Marlin "between paint jobs" running as a C, FD (C/Fuel Dragster) for lack of a proper funny car class at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Fremont CA 1966 (4/22/66 Drag News) 1) This is one of those well-known match bashers less remembered for what it accomplished than what it was: A 426-hemi-powered, altered wheelbase Rambler Marlin fer chrissakes. Chassis by Blair's Speed Shop. Rambler "Flash-O-Matic" (aka Torqueflite) trans by Art Carr. Preston Honea was employed by Bill Kraft Rambler in Norwalk, CA, when his performance-minded boss offered him a new Marlin fastback to drag race. The straight-tubular front axle was soon replaced with a 5" dropped version. Featured with ultra-cool William A. Moore cutaway illustration in 11/65 Car Craft. 2) This photo reflected how car appeared in 1965 and very early 1966, before re-paint. |

Notes: Seaton had just installed a blower on the car in January. Jay was driving this car at Miami for an eight-car show on January 22. In the first round of eliminations, his off pace 11.45 lost to Bobby Woods' 9.92. Howell came back out later and ran 9.86/146.57 in a consolation race. On the 8th, he took the car to Houston for a best of three match against Chuck Grimsley, who was driving the "Kansas Badman." The car had issues, but Howell still won the match, running 10.40 times at 149.50. | Injected fuel, 115" Howell chassis. Heinelt was driving the Chevelle at some races, so Jay Howell filled in. Heinelt normally drove. Heinelt drove the car in 1967 until he left the team, then Howell drove it again. The '66 Chevelle and this Corvair were sold to Chip and Howdy Bartlett in 1967.
