Notes: “All American Boy” Charlie Allen’s best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. The car ran OK, registering high 7s. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. Charlie raced the car under the blue & silver Atlantic Dodge and Crenshaw Dodge banners in 1968. Allen collected a $2,000 win at Irwindale at the 16 car Experimental Stock Invitationals. (Info from Draglist.com files and James Ibusuki) |

Notes: Gene was at Blaney Drag Strip on September 5 for an East Coast Fuel circuit race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 8.34 beat Charles Lee's Javelin. In the semifinal, he ran another 8.34 to beat Jim Wigglesworth. That moved him into the final against the Opel "Mini Brute" driven by Dan Smoker. Unfortunately for Gene, Dan got the win with his own 8.34. On October 18, he was at Keystone Raceway for another east Coast Fuel Circuit race. He became the first Chev-powered car on the circuit to run a "7" when he ran 7.99/176.78 in qualifying. | Former Jungle Jim 1969 car. Altizer ran the East Coast Fuel Funny Car Circuit. - RT |

Notes: Joe Amato's "Whiskey" Corvair ran a 440 "Rat" built by Weimer Machine. Amato built the chassis himself. He ran the UDRA Circuit and was a middle of the pack qualifier. He rarely failed to qualify for the eight-car shows. He ran a best of 8.31 with the Corvair. Ran 8.55 at Minneapolis 7/70. |

Notes: Injected fuel. UDRA car. Former Bud Richter "Tension II" Chevy II, run by Richter in 1965 and in 1966. Appears to have had grill updated to '65 version following sale to Andersons. Car was destroyed at Union Grove (WI) while being towed up the return road. Errant Top Fuel dragster crashed into car on top end, resulting in fiery crash. Bonnie Anderson was badly burned in incident. Unclear if this occured late in 1966 or early 1967. 1966 (10/14/66 Drag World) - DD |

Notes: The late Clester Andrews was one of Texas' most successful racers in the first half of the 1960s. Clester's success had come in Stock, Super Stock, and A/FX. In the A/FX wars, he won 40 of 42 match races in his Holman-Moody built 1965 Mustang (according to the Holman-Moody website). That car morphed into his first match bash funny car. In 1967, Andrews replaced the old 1965 Mustang with a new match bash Mustang. Holman-Moody built this new Mustang as well. Ford supplied the rare and powerful injected SOHC that Jack Quinn tuned. Clester got sponsorship from Bardahl and hit the major national events with the car. Andrews raced many match races with the Bardahl 555 Mustang. | Note: This photo shows the earlier '65-'66 Mustang, not a '67. - RT |
