Notes: Noted car was campaigned nationwide in 1965. Dick Landy was a full time factory driver, and this car received a lions share of the publicity. This car was run by Jim Wetton in 1966 as the "Studio Dodge." Ran on fuel and on gas. These times are on fuel. Car survives, was restored by Mike Guffey in the 1990s, and is reportedly in a private collection in Florida now. Ran 9.52 142.85 at Super Stock meet at York. Notes: Injected fuel. This is before altering the wheelbase. The wheelbase was altered, continued running injected fuel until late in the season, when he experimented with a supercharger. Went back to stacks, sold car early in 1967 to Gene Kidder. Kidder crashed the car in 1968. Landy also drove his old 65 AWB Dodge early in 1966, before selling it to Jim Wetton. Also took a few passes in Shahan's "Drag-On Lady." Long Beach, CA 1966 (3/11/66 Drag World) |

Notes: On July 16, Dick raced against Don Nicholson in a best of three match at US 131 Martin, Mich. It was not a good day for Landy as he lost three straight. It started when he broke a water hose on the line in the first race. Then he fouled and shut down to 9.40 in the second race. He finally got in a good run in the final race, but his 8.94/154 lost to "Dyno's" 8.68/165. On August 13, he was at Cecil County for a four-car show. Dick was hard on the Chevys in the first two rounds running 8.76 in both wins over Malcolm Durham and Del Heinelt in Tom Strum's Chevelle. He was supposed to run Mike Buckel driving the "Ramchargers" Dart in the third race, but Landy broke. The next day, he faced the "Seaton Shaker" again for a match race at Englishtown. Surprisingly, Landy lost the first race, but he came back to win the next two with runs of 9.53/124 and 9.23/136 to easily cover Heinelt's 9.65 best. Shortly after that, he met up with Durham again at West Salem. Malcolm was late arriving, so Landy soloed with a 10.64/139.53 to get credit for winning the first race. After Durham finally showed, Landy's 9.62 beat the Corvair's 10.15. Although he had already won the match, Landy and Durham made another run for the fans. Once again, the Dodge led the Chevy through the traps. Dick ran 9.42/150.50 to defeat Durham's 9.57/149. The Dart was hard-pressed to match the fiberglass Comets of Nicholson and Eddie Schartman, and it showed in the match races. He lost three straight to Nicholson at Alton on August 20. Dick's best time was an 8.97/146.10, while Don's worst time was an 8.53. The next day they raced again at US 30 Gary, Indiana, where "Dyno" again took the match. Landy did get one win in when Don got out of shape in the first race, and his 8.83/166.40 managed to win over Nicholson's 8.87/166. Don returned to reset the track record and win the next two races. Dick did much better the following week (August 27) at 75/80 Drag-A-Way, where he beat Ronnie Sox two straight with times of 9.18/154.63 and a track record 8.63/163.63. He faced the "Dyno" man again at Capitol on September 24 with the same results. In the first race, the Comet ran 8.48/172 over the Dodge's 9.05/163.93. Nicholson slowed down, and Landy quickened his pace in the second race, but Don's 8.70/152 still beat Landy's 8.82/170.77. But the Comet's slow speed showed there was a problem. Don had blown a head gasket and could not run the final race, so Landy ran an 8.55/172.41 solo. The following day, he was at Thompson, Ohio, to face the other strong SOHC Comet of Schartman. "Fast Eddie" lived up to his nickname by beating Landy three straight. ET Long Island NY 1966 (October 1966 Hot Rod) mph Scottsdale AZ 1967 (1/13/67 Drag News) | Injected fuel. Dart now, AWB. An 8.24/175.50 MAY have been run when the car was injected, but maybe blown. Landy started 1966 in his 1965 Dodge, then sold it to Jim Wetton. Dick built this Dart, ran it as a pretty much standard-wheelbase car, then altered it as pictured here. Added a blower late in the season. Also spent some time in H.L. Shahan's "Drag On Lady." Landy sold this car to Gene Kidder in 1967, who crashed it in 1968. "Dandy" Dick Landy transitioned from Super Stock to A/FX to his final fiberglass funny car. Landy did not make the flip-top transition but did switch to the blown nitro combo. "Dandy Dick" was popular with fans because of showmanship backed up with performance. The final "Landy's Dodge" Dart ran 7.96/196.60. Landy suffered a major transmission explosion at one race in front of a Chrysler executive. That was the straw that broke the camel's back with Chrysler's entry into early funny car racing. Landy went back to Super Stock racing and later went on to a storied Pro Stock career that he financed with a successful engine-building business. (Photo provided by Drag Race Memories. Notes: All fiberglass 109" Larson-built rectangular tube chassis. Larson ran this car on gas, alky, and fuel. These are fuel stats. He ran the car from 1966/68, then debuted his Camaro. Sold this car to Jim Maybeck, who ran it as the "Screaming Eagle" A/XS in 1968. Then Maybeck turned it over to Al Hanna late in 1968. The best times I've found for this car in 1966 on fuel are 9.2/150.00 at Englishtown, per 11/04/66 Drag Times. A 4/3/70 National Dragster Pro-File says the car went 8.50s at 167 in 1966, though they were notorious for having the years wrong. - JB (Note: Picture shows his rebodied '67 car, not the '66 as noted above. He ran each in successive years. - RT) |

Notes: Bruce was at York US 30 in April to make some test runs with his Chevelle. He made three passes, a 9.10/155.44, 9.73/141.73, and 8.92/156.25. On April 23, he was at Delmar US 13 for a best of three match race against Tom Smith. Larson won all three races, running a career-best (to this point) 8.86/159.85. Those times were bettered on April 29 at York, Pa. He was there for a best of three against Dave Strickler. In their first race, Larson's 8.76/155.44 beat Dave's 8.91/152. Strickler evened things up in the second race when he drove his Corvette to an 8.89/157 to beat the "USA-1's" 8.94/148.76. Bruce ran a new personal best in the final race to win the match with his 8.66/160.42 coming out on top over Strickler's 8.78/159. |

Notes: Won inaugural NE Funny Car Nats. Injected fuel here. Ran on gas as well. AWB tube chassis. Car was probably run early 1967 too. Was "Mystery 9" early in 1966, "Mystery 8" late in 1966. Ran 8.43 at Townsend, MD, per 11/11/66 Drag News. Bill faced Ronnie Sox for a best of three match race at Capitol on October 2. Sox had lots of problems and broke in the first two races. Lawton won with times of 8.87/166.35 and 8.43/167.59. Sox was unable to run the last race, but Lawton decided to run a solo and try to hit 170 mph. I'm sure he was sorry he tried as he scattered his engine all over the track when a rod let go. | We need to sort out the various Mystery x cars and the timeline. Notes: AKA Mystery 8. In January, for the AHRA Winternationals, Bill had led qualifying with an 8.76/163.63. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the 2400-pound Funny Car class with an 8.53/167.59 that beat Gene Snow. He won his second-round race but blew his transmission and couldn't return for the next round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran an 8.58/167.91 and won the B/XS class with an 8.71/168.22. At the NASCAR Winter Championships, Lawton lost to Ronnie Sox in the first round of both Heads-up eliminator and Handicap Eliminator. He ran 9.69/141.50. On April 9 at Aquasco Speedway, Bill downed the Ramchargers two straight in a best-of-three match race. Lawton's best times at the match race were 8.52/164.93. NASCAR held a race at Capitol on May 13, and Bill ran as well as 8.63/158.45 in stopping Dave Strickler's Corvette, but he failed to reach the finals. The next day he was at Connecticut for a best of three match with Bob Sullivan's "Pandemonium" Camaro. The blown Hemi-powered Camaro had the speed, but it wasn't as quick as Lawton's Mustang. Bill's best was an 8.53/168.85 in the first race. Sullivan was after to win the second race, and Bill won the match by winning the final. On May 21, he was at Aquasco for a ten-car show. It rained out shortly after the first round, but Bill had run 8.89/149.50 over a fouling Bobby Wood in his race. Lawton was at Englishtown on May 28 for a best-of-three match against Malcolm Durham. Bill won the match two straight with times of 8.62/164.53 and 8.81/163.83. He won the big Memorial Day Funny Car meet in Connecticut on May 30. A final round 8.89/156.79 gave him the victory after earlier running a best of 8.60/160.71. He beat Joe Lunati at Connecticut in another match race shortly after that. Lawton ran a best of 8.59 there, and it was reported that it was the last run for the "Mystery 8" Mustang as a new car was replacing it. He was running 70 percent nitro. At Bristol in June for the NHRA Springnationals, Lawton debuted his new Logghe-built Mustang. He qualified #6 at 8.469/169.17. An 8.33/176.81 in the first round beat Ed Burnett's 10.43/137, but he lost to Tom Grove in the second round, 8.38/168 to a 14-second shutoff. Only two cars showed up on Friday, June 23, for the 2000-pound fuel class at Cecil for the Super Stock Nationals. The first run between the two was also the final. Lawton won when Ed Schartman fouled against him. The next day, twelve cars were competing in the class. Lawton's 8.44 in the opening round beat Paul Hatton's 8.84, but in the second round, his 8.32 fell to Maynard Rupp's 8.29. Connecticut held a race early in July, and Bill's 8.46/167.28 beat Steve Bovan's 8.90/167 in the first round. In the second round, his off-pace 9.66/95.54 lost to Malcolm Durham's 8.75/164. He was back in Connecticut a few days later for a twelve-car show. He was un-beatable this day as he reset the track record at will. His 8.35/170.45 over Bovan in the first round was a new track ET record, and he lowered it to 8.30 while beating Larry Reyes in the "Kingfish." He faced the "Secret Weapon" Jeep of Roger Wolford in the final, and Roger broke, so Lawton ran 8.32/171.75 for the victory. Soon after, Bill faced off against "Jungle Jim" Liberman at Aquasco. Lawton got the win by default after Liberman cracked a cylinder head while running a winning 8.91/150 in the first round. Lawton then made two solo passes to win, running a best of 8.21/172.14. He had a bad day at Thompson Dragway on July 23, where he lost three straight to Dick Harrell. He was late in their first race and shut off in the second round. In the third race, his 9.00/150.00 lost to Harrell's 8.43/165. Bill's Mustang was still unblown at the US Nationals, but he qualified #8 with an 8.30/172.74. Unfortunately, he came up against Doug Thorley's Corvair in round one. An 8.128/177.86 lost to Doug's 7.81/185. After Indy, the writing was on the wall: you needed to be blown. Shortly after this, a blower was installed. |

Notes: Leal's first flopper: Hilborn-injected late hemi, TorqueFlite, Logghe chassis combo. Leal was leery of blowers. Butch ran this Logghe-built Barracuda in '67. B&N Fiberglass made the body. A stock stroke and bore 426 Hemi powered the car. He and crew chief Jack Smith built and maintained the engine. M/T supplied the rods and pistons while an Isky cam was used. The Hilborn injectors fed the 90% nitro mix to the engine. The transmission was a TorqueFlite built by Art Carr. This was one of the strongest unblown FCs in '67. Leal was at Fremont on April 2 for a best-of-three-match race against Mark Bloom, who was driving the "Bloomin' Bullet" Camaro. Leal won two straight with times of 9.51/165.13 and 8.59/170.77. Mark's best was 9.63. A week later (April 8), he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. There were two classes of FCs run, and he was in the 2,000 lb. class. Leal's 8.92/168.50 qualified #2 behind Jack Chrisman's 8.71/177. In the opening round, his 8.87/170.45 beat Steve Bovan. He reached the final to face Chrisman's Comet, but the 'Cuda broke and could not run, so Jack soloed for the money. Shortly after, he was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, for a four-car event. In his first race, Butch's 8.45/166.67 beat Roger Lindamood. In his next race, he ran Dean Nicopolis in the "Hemi Hunter" Camaro. Dean watched as Leal pulled away from him and won easily with an 8.28/178.27. There was talk about Leal being able to mount a challenge to the dominating Comets of "Dyno" Don Nicholson and "Fast Eddie" Schartman. On May 7, he was in Minneapolis, where he raced Dick Loehr. He won two straight with times of 10.30/113.92 and 9.44/173.07 on the cold track. The two strongest Plymouth FCs locked horns for a best-of-three match race at Lions on July 8. Fred Goeske's "Hemi-'Cuda" had been laying down big mph numbers for quite a while before Leal brought out his flip-ton car, so this would be a big match. Leal was more than up to the task as he won three straight with times of 8.03/171.75 (over Fred's 8.31/186),8.04/169.17, over Fred's 8.36 at a crazy 187.88, and another 8.03. On August 12, Leal was at Lions for a best-of-three match against Doug Thorley's new Corvair. The Chevy was supercharged and, as we know, would later prove to be a strong contender by winning the NHRA Nationals. But at this event, the hatchback stopped the Corvair two straight with times of 8.08/173.74 and 8.07. Doug's times were 8.21/184 and 8.10/181. On September 9, Butch went up against Don Gay at OCIR. Gay was debuting his new Firebird, so new car blues held back its performance to an 8.95 best, while Leal won all three races with times of 8.15/166.97, 8.14/174.08, and 8.08/173.07. He was back at OCIR later in the month for another best of three, this time against Gas Ronda's new Mustang. Ronda had just driven the car to some shake-down runs before their match but still ran a best of 8.38. But there was no stopping Leal as he went undefeated again, winning all three races with a best of 8.08/176.81. Leal campaigned the car until the end of the year and was having a new car built for the '68 season, but he saw the future of FC and realized that a blower was needed to stay competitive. He wasn't willing to go that route as he saw way too many blower explosions. This was 1967's quickest and fastest injected funny car at 7.82/181.90 (per Butch's website). He also ran 8.03/177.71 somewhere and 8.22/176.47 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. - Danny White | The car was featured in the 12/67 issue of Drag Strip. - RT; Photo: Hot Rod Archive Series, no. 6, Hemi Power (Winter 2007), p. 32 -MB |
