Notes: Proffitt was at Houston, Texas, early in the year for a best of three match race against Del Heinelt who was driving Pete Seaton's Corvair. Hayden reset the track record with a 9.54 warm-up run (at 154). In the first race, Proffitt fouled and then stood the Comet up on its rear bumper. Heinelt won with a 9.72. Proffitt fouled again in the second round, giving the match to Heinelt, but the Comet went through with a engine blowing 9.52 that reset the record. The car was done for the day. | When did Proffitt to drive his new Corvair? - RT |

Notes: Hayden Proffitt was one of the great racers of the 1960s. Proffitt won many races in Super Stock with a Chevrolet 409, then jumped to a Ford when they gave him a Comet A/FX. Proffitt built a Corvair funny car in 1966, signaling his return to Chevrolet. The car debuted with a top, but he removed it after the car wanted to lift at speeds. The unattributed claim says the car ran a best 8.49. | Proffitt was at Lions on May 14 for a best of three match race against Ed Marcak's "Flying Farmer" Mustang. Hayden won the match two straight with times of 10.16/136.77 and 10.41/137.82. He was at Lions on May 21, where he ran two exhibition passes of 9.74/148.51 and 9.78/148.27. On June 4, he ran Sid Foster and his Mustang at Dickinson, Texas. Proffitt won three straight with times of 9.96/144.00, 9.58/143.54, and 9.63/147. Another match at Lions came on July 9 when he faced off against Gas Ronda and his SOHC-powered Mustang. This time Proffitt lost two straight. In the first race, his 9.67/146.46 lost to Ronda's 9.20/157. In the second race, the little Corvair improved to a 9.38/148.02 but still lost to the Mustang's 9.14/174. These two drivers would meet in the final at the AHRA World Championships on July 24 at Lions. They qualified one-two with Ronda's 9.12 leading Proffitt's 9.36. Both made their way into the final, where Ronda won with a 9.25/155 over Hayden's 9.38/148.51. In September, Proffitt took on Doug Nash's 289 powered Bronco in a match race at Irwindale. The Corvair won two straight with times of 9.41/155.17 and an out-of-shape 9.80/153.84. Late in the year, Hayden showed that a Chevy could still run when he showed up at Lions for its East-West meet. An 8.63 in the first round, beat Allen's 8.85. He got a single in the second round due to his Low ET run of the first-round. In the semifinals, the Corvair dished out an 8.52 to beat Sox, and in the final, he beat Ronda for all the marbles. It was a good showing for Proffitt's Corvair. | Previously listed the 9.38/148.51 at Lions on 7/30/66 as an injected nitro car. If Hayden ran the 8.52/155 times with a blower, we need to separate the entries. |

Notes: Proffitt started the '67 season behind the wheel of his Corvair. At Irwindale's New Year's race, he qualified fifth with an 8.87/155.44 and ran as good as an 8.77/158.17 in the semis over Clyde Wilson. In the final against Don Nicholson, his 8.79/158.17 lost to Don's 8.47/140. On April 15 at Lions, he qualified #1 with an 8.94 and ran a first-round 8.85/161, a semifinal 8.88 before winning with a Low ET of the meet, 8.61/161.87 over Mark Bloom. At Minneapolis on May 14, he had a match race against Arnie Beswick. Arnie won the first round with an 8.82/169.81 over Hayden's 8.87. But Hayden returned to win the match in two straight with runs of 8.72/163.63 and 8.88/157.89 over Beswick's quicker 8.71/169. Another match race was run at Amarillo on May 21 against Gene Snow. Gene won the match, winning two straight over the little Corvair, but Hayden managed to beat Snow in the last race. He ran a best of 8.84. Shortly after this, Proffitt debuted his AMC Rebel FC. Did he run 8.14 in the Corvair |

Notes: Took over driving duties from Gary Dyer when Gary got the Mr. Norm ride. | On April 17, Rachanski was at Maple Grove for a best of five match race with Cecil Yother, who had just cut the top off of his Belvedere to make it into a roadster similar to Ed's car. In the first round, the Comet came out on top with a 9.79/139 over Cecil's 9.98/144. In the second race, Ed ran quicker, but his 9.81/139 lost to Yother's 9.82/143. Yother fouled in the next race, but the score was evened up at two each when Cecil won the fourth race with a track record 9.69. It was anyone's race in the final, but Cecil fouled once again, handing the match to Rachanski. He didn't go too well at Lexington on June 5, where he faced Kelly Chadwick and his Nova for a best of three match. In the first race, his 9.85/134.50 lost to the Chevy's 9.80/140. Ed fouled away a 9.78/139.80 in the second race, while Chadwick ran a 9.79/140 for the win giving him two in a row. They still came out for a third run, and Kelly won with a 9.74, beating Ed's 9.85/134. Ed was at Minneapolis on June 26 in his topless Comet roadster for a best of three match race against Bob Sullivan's "Pandemonium" Barracuda. He won the first two races with times of 10.08/132.78 and 10.29/134.55, but Bob got out on him in the final race, and his 11.13/151 beat Rachanski's much quicker 9.98/140.62. Wichita International hosted the Drag World Super Stock Meet on September 24. It was a sixteen-car field, and Ed's wedge-powered car held up against the Hemi and SOHC-powered cars. A first-round 9.76/132.15 advanced when John Burton broke, and in round two, he improved to 9.54, narrowly losing to Terry Ivey's 9.51. He really proved that the wedges could run when he beat Yother at Maple Grove in a best of five match on October 2. It didn't look good when Cecil drove the "Melrose Missile" to the first two wins, but in the third race, Ed ran 9.15/150.25 to beat Yother's 9.23/153. He won the next two races to win the match, with his next best time being 9.38/147.38. |

Notes: The original "Kingfish" match bash funny car was one the wildest funny cars of the 1960s. Famed Memphis racer Bill Taylor built the car in 1965 with the original wheelbase, but it got a needed extension by John Albright in 1966 to keep up with the new flip tops. The "Kingfish" Barracuda ran a 426 Chrysler Hemi on a heavy load of nitro. California racer Larry Reyes moved to Memphis just to drive the "Kingfish." The brave driver ran a best of 8.59 at 169 with the car. The machine was retired at the end of the 1966 season to be replaced by a new flip top Barracuda. Did this car run in 1965 or did it debut in 1966? (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Race Memories. stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki) (Featured in 10-66 PHR. - Ron T.) |
