Notes: All-glass stretched '66 Dart sedan got its name because the owner, builder assembled the 2x3" square-tube frame in the back of his plumbing business. 426 hemi, Hilborn injector, Art Carr Torqueflite, dropped front axle, leaf springs, front wheel wells moved up 13," rear wheel wells moved up 15." | Bill was at Fremont on September 10 for a best-of-five match race with the "Souza Bros." wedge-powered Mustang. He lost the first race with a 9.29/148.02 to the Mustang's 9.21/148. But in the second race, Dave Souza got out of shape and had to lift, giving Bill the win at 9.24/145.39. Dave returned to win the third race with a 9.46/144 over the "Quarterbender's" 9.61/142.16. Rieck had to win the next two races to win the match, and that's what he did. In the fourth race, the Mustang had fuel starvation trouble, and Bill's 9.40/141.50 tied the match up at two each, and then a final 9.47/147.05 won the match over Dave's wheelstanding 9.45/147. It was close as Dave almost caught the Dart in the lights. |

Notes: Ronda's Hilborn injected 427 SOHC used aluminum cylinder heads. He started the season using steel rods, but later switched to aluminum rods from M/T. The pistons were also supplied by M/T. The popular choice of cams used by SOHC Ford runners was the Crane Nitro 600's and Ronda also used them. The car weighed in at 2,100 lbs. | Won the Super Stock (Fuel) title at the 1966 AHRA Championships with a 9.25/156.79. Gas won unlimited Funny Car at the Bakersfield March Meet, running an unreal 8.96 for Low ET. In the final, a 9.18/155.44 beat Tom McEwen's "Hemi-Cuda" at 9.31/173. Shortly after that, (March 5), he was at Lions for a match race against Ronnie Sox. In their first race, they both ran 9.91 (the Mustang at 154.37), but Ronda reached the stripe first. Gas went on to win the match over Sox. He made three exhibition passes at Irwindale on March 20 with runs of 9.16/155.44, a 9.27/153.32, and a 9.05/157.95. On April 9, Lions held a best of three match with Ronda facing the "Corvette Auto Parts" car. Gas took the match with three straight wins running best times of 9.04/161. Ronda was supposed to run Norm Cowdrey in a best of three match at Lions on April 30, but Ford recalled his Mustang to strengthen the roll bar. He ran an interesting match race at Irwindale on May 21. He was to have raced Jim Liberman in the "Brutus" GTO, but in the first race, Gas won with a 10.02/153.58 while Jim ran 10.81/135, blew his motor and was unable to run. Ed Kohler took Jim's place and beat Gas in the second race with a 9.42/144 to the Mustang's 9.49/154.90. In the final race, Ed's 10.77/140 won when Ronda blew an engine. He had more of a normal match race against Dick Landy on June 4 at Puyallup Dragway. In the best two-out-of-three, he won two straight with 9.87 and 9.32/152.28 passes. Landy got him back one week later (June 11) at Irwindale when he won a match race over Ronda. Hayden Proffitt met Ronda at Lions on July 9 for a best of three match and Gas' 9.20/157.89 and 9.14 times beat Proffitt two straight. He won Top Stock Eliminator at the AHRA Championships at Lions on July 24 with a final round 9.25/155.97 beating Proffitt's Corvair at 9.38/148. Another match race was run at Lions on August 16; this time, he faced Dale Armstrong. Gas won two straight with times of 9.06/156.25 and 9.04/158.45. On September 17, Charlie Allen fell to the Mustang at Irwindale in a best of three. Once again, Gas won two straight with times of 9.21/157.89 and 8.95/159.85. On October 9, Ronda faced "Brutus" again and this time, he lost the first-round with his 9.49/152.28 falling to the GTO's 9.26/158. Gas was able to come back and win the next two races and the match with times of 8.89/160.42 and 8.90/160.14. He was to face Allen in a match on October 15 at Irwindale, but during time trials Allen had the front end of his Dart blow off. The car was out of competition for the rest of the day, but Steve Bovan filled in. Ronda won the first race with a 9.14/156.53 over the "Studio Dodge" while Bovan got his Nova ready. In the second race, Ronda's transmission let go, and he slowed to a 14.36 loss to Steve's 9.37/144. In the final race, Gas beat Bovan with a 9.10/158.45 to win the match. At Lions' East-West meet, Ronda made it into the final of the unblown Funny Car class, but lost to Proffitt. He was back to his winning ways in December by beating Del Heinelt in the "Seaton's Shaker" at Irwindale two straight to win the match with an 8.72/161 best, and then beating Jim Liberman's new Nova at Fremont on December 18 in a best two-out-of-three match. Ronda's Mustang was a strong runner throughout the '66 season. |

Notes: As the story has been told before, Gas Ronda began drag racing as a hobby. Ronda's doctor told him to find something to do in his spare time. I don't believe drag racing is what the doctor ordered. Ronda made his way through the Super Stock ranks until he got his first funny car in 1966, the Russ Davis Ford sponsored Mustang. The famed shop of Holman-Moody built the first Russ Davis Ford. That car was replaced by this Ron Scrima EE built car in 1967. Gas had a very professional approach to drag racing that made him popular with fans and the press alike. He won many races with the poppy red Mustang. The car ran times of 7.90/184.04 with an injected engine, despite the stock style body with removable front end and opening doors. By 1969, the car was outdated and was replaced by a newer LSC built Mustang that won the '69 OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. Confirmed 8.30/175.78, and 8.24/172.24 at OCIR Mfg.
