Notes: In an August 6 matchrace at Fontana, Shroeder turned times of 10.39-133.33, 10.59-130-62, and 10.53-131.38 (per 8-12-66 Drag World). We previously reported uncredited/undated times of 9.43-150. -- RT | Beautiful emerald green steel-bodied 2450-pound car with glass front bumper. Near-stock 427 Chev with Hilborn injectors squirting 40-60 nitro, alky mix, dyno'd at 750 hp. Four-speed Muncie trans dumped to Ford 9" rear. Featured in 10-66 Drag Strip and 12/66 Pop Hot Rodding. Schroeder carved out a later career in exhibition wheelstanders, and was touring with a jet-powered Ford Focus station wagon when he was diagnosed with melanoma. He passed away shortly afterward, in mid-2007.

It used a 426 Hemi filled with M/T rods, Forgedtrue pistons, and a Crane cam. The heads were reworked by Gary Brown. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and the GMC 6/71 was prepared by Don Hampton and used a Pete Robinson case. Up top sat a Hilborn injection unit. The TorqueFlite transmission transferred the power back to a Mopar rear with 3.54 gears. An early run on 45% nitro got Don an 8.12 time slip. | Also ran 8.19 at Minnesota Dragways.

Notes: Hayden Proffitt was one the great racers of the 1960s. Proffitt won may races in Super Stock with a Chevrolet 409, then jumped to a Ford when they gave him a Comet A/FX. Proffitt built a Corvair funny car in 1966. The car began with a top, but it was removed after the car wanted to lift at speeds. Les Shockley was tapped to help drive the car in '66.
