Notes: Bob Ranstrom usually drove. Took his motor out and put in Larry Broga's B/FD motor. Broga drove here. Epping, NH 1965 (10/23/65 Drag News) - per Larry Broga, the engine was the 482" Chrysler from his AA/FD, so the caption in the photo is incorrect. In addition, Broga states it was a wild ride, as the caption mentions! - JM |

Notes: Injected fuel. Ran this car after the first one was crashed earlier in the year. Became Leroy Dugan's "Bushwhacker" in 1968. | Roger Caster had been associated with Hayden Proffitt and Grady Bryant and had formerly worked for Dick Harrell before he and Grady teamed up on a match race stocker. The first car they built was totaled in Tulsa, so this car was its replacement. The new Nova used a T-Bar chassis with a Mopar rear carrying 4.30 gears. Henry Schroeder of T-Bar also did the aluminum floor. The engine was a .060 overbored "Rat" that used a Crankshaft Company crank. Stock rods held 12.5:1 Forgedtrue pistons. The heads were stock, including the valves. The cam came from Erson. The team ran 48% nitro for fuel, and it was fed to the motor by Hilborn injectors. The transmission was a TorqueFlite, and the rear end was also a Mopar unit that used 4.30 gears. The first time out, the car ran 9.30s and 9.40s. This was one of the few Chevys that was able to beat Gene Snow at the time. ET 1966 (1/67 Drag Strip) mph Green Valley 1966 (6/3/66 Drag World) |

Notes: Both Buckel and Jim Thornton drove this car as members of the Ramchargers team. Acid-dipped at AeroChem, it was raced in 2% A/FX form at the 1965 Winternationals, then converted to full AWB status. Ran gas, later fuel, and was the factory test bed for some of the Hilborn injector development. Car is noted for clocking the first 8-second doorslammer time slip at 8.910/148.66 at Cecil County on August 7/1965 (Thornton driving - 50% fuel, 472" stroker). This was after an accident Buckel had at Detroit Dragway during the team's first attempt at running nitro a weekend prior. That flip crushed the acid-dipped roof and rear quarters. Alexander Brothers rebuilt it quickly, so the car was still in primer during the record-setting run. Buckel could have run better numbers than this, as 150.50 mph in a for sale ad, a 9.83 at 140+ mph at Milan, a 9.36/146.00 at Ubly and a 157.00 at Detroit are all attributed to the car, but driver is not listed. Those were run either by Buckel or Jim Thornton. (6/12/65 Drag News) |

Notes: The "Ramcharger" Dart was not a flip-top FC. The roof lifted off for access to the cockpit. The Dart body appeared stock but was actually narrowed six inches. Mike was at Cecil County on April 16 for a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay and his "Infinity" GTO. The first race was a classic, as Buckel's 8.37/168.85 narrowly beat Gay's 8.45/163. Unfortunately, the Pontiac blew its transmission, so it was out of competition. Jim Liberman was there as a backup car in his new Nova, so he filled in. In the next race, Mike's 8.63/168.85 easily beat the Nova's ailing 9.53/145. The third race saw Jim pick up half a second to 9.03/159, but it still wasn't enough to win against Mike's 8.53/168.53. | One of their injected Darts (I believe this one) had a removable roof. They ran both with and without it. It was also a subframe car. Built by Woody Gilmore, as I remember. - NH |

Notes: Chuck Finders-built chassis, one-piece fiberglass shell from Fiberglass Trends. 396 semi-hemi with a Crankshaft Company stroker bringing it to 454 cubes, set back behind cowl. Goosed through a C&O Torqueflite trans. Initially injected. went to blower in 1968. Car featured in 5/67 Popular Hot Rodding. Car was reportedly sold to Gene Conway in '68, who replaced the front clip with a Firebird piece and swapped the Chev mill for an early hemi. Car was run under the C&O Automotive banner until Conway moved to a series of Corvette floppers. Note: Times quoted here slower than 8.60/165 PHR attributed to Hilborn-injected car the previous season, so may not be best this car saw with a blower. - RT | Last runs for this car and team were in 1967. The blown version was run by Conway. - DD Chuck Finders-built chassis, one-piece fiberglass shell from Fiberglass Trends. 396 semi-hemi with a Crankshaft Company stroker bringing it to 454 cubes, set back behind cowl. Notes: Mike Burkhart's first funny car was this steel Chevy II match basher. Burkhart was a terror with his Super Stock '57 Chevrolet Bel Air in the Dallas area. In 1965, Mike built the steel Chevrolet with big block injected Chevy power. Friendly Chevrolet sponsored the stretched wheelbased car. Burkhart won many match races with the strangely painted Chevy II (it was red on one side and blue on the other). Mike was a regular in Texas match races with the Chevy II in 1966, but retired the car at the end of the season to build a Camaro for 1967. |
