Notes: Car ran as "Skipper's Critter" when injected; name changed to "Shores & Hess" when Jim Shores joined team and blower added during '66 season. Two-page feature in 4/66 Hot Rod. | AHRA legal. (Anglias not NHRA legal in gas classes in 1966 due to too-short 90" wheelbase; rule later changed.) |

Notes: Jack was at Englishtown on July 30, where he reset the NHRA A/GS record down to 9.61. He had just reset it two weeks previous to 9.64. His speed on the run was 140.34. He then came out and lowered it again with a 9.53 at 147.54. He also ran the car in BB/A the same day and reset that record to 9.61 after an earlier 9.70 run on a 9.75 record. His speed on the two runs were 145.86 and 146.10. The car was within the legal weight, falling in at 2,225 lbs. Jack won B/GS class at Indy with the previous car, his '39 Willys coupe, two years running ('63-'64). This car followed the same recipe: blown small-block Chevy bolted to a hydro trans. Extensive feature and interview in March '66 Rodding & Restyling. - RT | Handed "Ohio" George Montgomery his first-round loss since 1959. - Todd Merkel |

Notes: Car ran as "Skipper's Critter" when injected; name changed to "Shores & Hess" when Jim Shores joined effort and blower added during '66 season. Two-page feature in 4/66 Hot Rod. | We need to confirm if times cited were for the injected iteration. |

Notes: It was the beginning of the 1966 racing season, and Gene Ciambella clanged the bell loudly when his newly completed Austin garnered the A/GS trophy at both the AHRA Winternationals at Irwindale, and the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Ran a 9.87/144.19 to beat K.S. Pittman's Willys at the NHRA Winter doings. (Also new for '66, NHRA began the first of a series of confounding-to-some reclassifications of the gas class structure when it retitled the "classic" A/GS as AA/G, B/GS as BB/G, etc.) Lastly, about this time Ciambella began using another name professionally. He would in the future be known as Gene Conway. - RT |

Notes: George Montgomery's cars were always super-sanitary. This '33 Willys was no different. It was powered by a stock-size 427 SOHC Ford. George didn't like any unnecessary weight on his cars. His Willys tipped the scales at 2,400 lbs. On June 26, he was at Bluegrass Raceway for a best of three match race against Billy Jacobs. In their first race, Montgomery's 10.15/137.82 beat Billy's late 10.10/139 in his Mopar. The two came out for the second race but George had to retire and Willys as it was chewing up the Hydros at the rate of one per week.So he had to bring out the "Hurst Gasser Passer" to finish the match. |

Notes: The car ran DeSoto hemi/LaSalle trans through 1964; switched to Chrysler/hydro in 1965, per Larry Davis' "Gasser Wars."; On Jan. 23 at Raisin City, they set a national record with 10.24 at 136.78 mph. Earlier in January, they had run 138.36 mph but could not back it up for a national record. On Apr. 19 at Raisin City, they ran a very quick 9.94 at 136.77 mph. On June 4 at Fresno Dragways, they took a 3rd Eliminator win with 136.36 mph. Sometime prior to that, they set a world record of 138.67 mph. On June 18 at Fresno, they ran 10.32 at 136.02 mph. At the AHRA World Finals at Fort Worth on Sep. 5, they won their class with 10.20 at 133.92 mph. Notes: Revised edition of his Anglia A/Gasser, introduced two years earlier. Featured in the August '66 issue of AHRA Tach. This car took A/G at the 1966 AHRA World Championship at Lions. A week later at the NHRA Winternationals (Pomona), his perennial win escaped him, losing to the Kohler Bros., though turning a quicker/faster 10.32/136.36. - RT Loper ran the first A/G nine second time with a 9.99, but when and where? |

Notes: Arend's cross-species split-window Sting Ray is well-remembered by fans of mid-'60s drag machinery. With a late-model, ram-tubed 426 Dodge hemi feeding the horses though a Torqueflite trans into a quick-change rear end, a straight front axle up front and slicks suspended in massively hogged-out wheel wells in the rear, it had an in-your-face look that stuck in your head. Looks aside, Arend's "Mongoose" won Best Engineered Car at the '65 Nationals, where he reset the BM/SP speed record to 133.72 mph. The following year at the '66 Winternationals at Pomona he turned 135 mph times. |
