Notes: Herbert was in the process of building another dragster, his sixth in the Beast-named drag race vehicles. He hoped to have it ready in time to go to the U.S. Nationals in Kansas City. He knew he wouldn't have the blown '57 Chrysler engine ready in time, but he had plans to drop in an injected 331-inch engine. He intended to have someone else do the driving as his bout with polio nine years earlier deprived him from competitive driving. His wife, Peggy, was hoping Chet would permit her to drive the new dragster. Chet's intent to take the new dragster back to run at Kansas City apparently didn't happen. He said, "If we can't show what we can do back there, we'll have to do it at the Santa Ana drags." A search of Drag News after the U.S. Nationals showed no results at Santa Ana for Herbert's dragster. In fact, the only racing action for Chet in 1957 was with an 80-cubic-inch fuel Harley that Bud Morehouse drove for him. It appears that this dragster may have never been finished. Notes: The Road Rebels Car Club of San Gabriel started up in 1952. Lots of their members raced at various drag strips throughout Southern California. This Crosley coupe (driver and owner unknown) began racing at San Gabriel in mid-1956 in B Open Gas. Its best showing in that class was 102.35 mph on June 10. It began racing in A Competition Coupe in September, still using the Merc engine. It garnered Top Eliminator at San Gabriel on Sep. 16, clocking 108.64 mph. Notes: They took back-to-back wins in D/G at Pomona on Jan. 8 and Jan. 15 with 87.29 mph and 87.20 mph, respectively. The engine used then and in August racing was a 225 cubic inch Chevy 6. On Feb. 12 at Pomona, they won with their Chevy 6 in D/G with a new strip record of 93.65 mph. On Apr. 15 at the Drag News Invitational, Sedar and McCormack in the De-Win Chevy 6 set a strip record and class win in D/G with 92.59 mph. They took a D/G class win on Aug. 19 at San Gabriel with 91.78 mph. At Lions on Sep. 8, they won D/G with 89.37 mph. The D/G class was a tough class to win because of the presence of Jr. Thompson. There may have been an ownership and engine change at that point, as the Spaulding Cam Special was thereafter called the DeSalliers and Bishop Spaulding Cam Special. Jim Bishop was the driver. Bishop had previously won D/G at Pomona on Apr. 8 with 89.55 mph. Bishop took a win in D/G at San Gabriel on Sep. 23 with 90.00 mph. When the Spaulding Cam Special won at San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip on Oct. 21, DeSalliers and Bishop were listed as owners, and the engine was a '55 Chevy V8. They clocked 91.84 mph to win D/G class. They took another win at San Gabriel on Nov. 25 with 89.00 mph. On Dec. 9 at San Gabriel, they won again with 92.87 mph. Notes: With Santa Ana, Lions, San Gabriel, and San Fernando jumping on the fuel-ban bandwagon, it left precious little places for a fuel car like the Walker Brothers ran to find a place to race. Pomona lagged behind the other strips in banning fuel cars, so that's where they raced before giving in to the no-fuel trend and switching to the gas-only ranks. On Feb. 3 at Pomona, they turned 104.57 mph to take a trophy in A Fuel Coupe-Sedan class. They ran on gas at San Fernando on Apr. 28, taking a trophy in the E.F.H. fendered class with 99.77 mph. They really had no other option if they wanted to race. They adapted. They won the gas B/Altered Coupe-Sedan class trophy at Lions on May 26 with 100.55 mph. They won the E Fendered Coupe-Sedan class at San Fernando on June 16 with 97.60 mph. With the lack of event showings for the Walker Brothers in 1957, it's apparent that the fuel ban took the wind out of their sails. Notes: The Merrymen Car Club ran a 4-cylinder dragster in 1956-57. In May, they unveiled a new roadster that ran in the B/MR class. They spent $700 building the roadster. They brought it to Lions for its first outing on May 19 for testing. The B/MR class included such competitors as Denny Carrisosa, Tony Waters, Al Freeman, the Road Rebels, and Chuck Ross. It was a competitive class. It took a while before they notched their first win at Lions on Aug. 10 with 95.03 mph. Possibly for that reason, i.e., the competitive class in B/MR, they then switched to running in the B/R class. Notes: At Pomona on Mar. 24, the roadster snared four trophies: set a new track record of 119.20 mph, class and eliminator wins, and top time. They had a best time of 11.87. At Santa Ana on May 5, they took a win in B/R with a 122.45 mph clocking. At Lions on Sep. 14, they won the A/R class with 121.29 mph. They also took an eliminator win against Harrell's Engines A/R entry by a car length with 12.17 at 118.26 mph. At Santa Ana on Oct. 13, they took a win in the A-O Competition Roadster class with 119.53 mph. On Dec. 8 at Pomona, they turned the top time of the day with 11.40 at 120.96 mph. Unfortunately, they blew their transmission and couldn't compete in their class or eliminations. Notes: Several members of the Antiques car club of Colton drag raced, mostly at Morrow Drag Strip. One of their members (unknown) teamed up with Scotty's Muffler Shop in San Bernardino to field this fully-chromed B Altered Coupe with a set of exhaust pipes reminiscent of the Speed Sport roadster. The car took two years to build at a cost of $2,000. Everything except the frame rails, made from aircraft wing struts, was chromed. The engine was a '50 Olds. '32 Ford axle housing, Halibrand quick-change center section, and '39 Lincoln Zephyr gearbox. The car first ran at Colton on Apr. 20, clocking 105.58 mph.
