Notes: Jim started the year at Pomona, where he qualified #12 at 5.618/263.52. He improved to a great 5.464/255.60 in round one but lost to Al Hofmann's 5.36/270. His next event was Columbus, where Jim was a DNQ (19th best) with a 5.618/265.01 best effort in qualifying. He qualified #14 at Sonoma at 5.549/270.27 and lost in round one to Mark Oswald, 5.78/260 to 5.868/255.97. Jim qualified #12 in Seattle at 5.508/267.14 but broke against Mike Dunn in round one. That was Jim's last NHRA National event of the year. We are listing these times with the Quickor Daytona, but Jim may have raced John West's Metal Arrester Daytona at a few events. Notes: Won NHRA Winternats in 1992 (fifth race on nitro). Photo from 1992 Winternationals. Jim drove Jim West's car and his own in 1992. We need to confirm which car ran which event. Check DragStats for best times after this is determined. | Jim qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.23/275.73. He went on to win the event by running steady 5.2's and then taking on John Force in the final. His final round 5.26/273.80, beat Force's 5.32/275. At NHRA's second race of the season, the Arizona Nationals, Jim qualified #2 with a 5.28/271.90. A first-round 5.32/268.41 beat Gary Clapshaw, but he slowed to a 5.40/268.17 in round two that lost to Gary Densham's holeshot aided 5.43/267. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Jim again qualified well, ripping off a 5.22/272.72 for the #2 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Caminito in the first round. Jim made it into another final round at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.25/275.81, and in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.02/167.09 but still won when Caminito smoked his tires even worse to a 6.69/140. In round two, he improved to a 5.20/279.85 to beat Paul Smith. In the semifinals, another consistent 5.22/270.51 beat Gary Bolger's 5.27/273 to advance into the final. Once again, he faced Force in the final, but their roles were reversed from the Winternationals. Here John set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.15/289 in the final to stop Jim's 5.27/275.39. These runs were all made with Epler's own car. Set Top Speed at Denver at 273.72.

Notes: Jim showed up at Columbus driving this Cutlass rather than the Daytona-bodied car he had been running in the first half of the season. He had many problems, and his 7.84/117.89 best failed to qualify. Epler then went to Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals, where although he improved to 5.75/263.15, he still failed (third alternate)to qualify. He debuted a new McKinney-built Cutlass at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where his 5.49/241.15 qualified #5. He fell off to 5.68/215.82 in the first round in a loss to Bruce Nilsen's 5.56/257. He did not race at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, but he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.17/287.44. An easy 6.57/134.77 advanced in the first round when Gordon Mineo broke. In the second round, his 5.22/247.11 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.20/287. He skipped going to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Jim's 5.25/291.54 (Top Speed) qualified #7. He improved to 5.23/263.85 over Paul Smith's 5.32/261 in the first round. Freddie Neely fouled against him in round two, and Jim took it easy at 7.38/117.61. Notes: First funny car over 300 mph and ninth member of the Slick 50 300 mph Club (including Top Fuel) on October 3/1993, with a 300.40 at Topeka, Ka Epler started the season driving this Daytona at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.19/288.46. Unfortunately, in round one, he had a rear slick blow out and damage the car. He crossed the finish with a 5.80/178.25, but lost to Jack Wyatt's 5.52/249. He had the car fixed and was at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona. A 5.24/282.48 qualified #6 and once again he met Wyatt in the first round. This time he had no problems and his 5.41/261.02 beat Wyatt's 5.48/246. Jim took it easy in round two when Gordon Mineo broke and in the semifinals, he advanced with a 25.90-40.76 when his opposition, Al Hofmann, was unable to show after destroying his car while winning his second-round race. This moved Jim into the final against Cruz Pedregon. He was faced with a lot of boos and jeers since he had not made any hard runs in the last two rounds and the crowd was against him for it. In his defense, he was running wounded and was just trying to keep the engine together and through luck, made his way into the final. He lost to Pedregon in the final, but it was not one of his better days as the crowd really got to him. Nothing was said, but his wife wrote a letter to National Dragster explaining their side of the story. Things returned to normal at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Epler qualified #3 with a career-best (to this point) 5.12/281.77. He smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to an 8.55/91.95 that lost to Brent Fanning's 5.82/231. The team didn't run very well at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying on the "bump" with a 5.50/221.13 and losing to low qualifier Hofmann in round one. Things were even worse at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show and Jim ended up as the third alternate with a 5.61/254.59 best. Epler had no problems qualifying at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.28/266.11 placed him #9 in the field. Eliminations were a different story as he lost to Whit Bazemore in round one. The sixth race of the season was the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 5.56/275.31 qualified #12. The Daytona broke in the first round, against Gordie Bonin. More problems kept him out of the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals. The best he could run in qualifying was a 9.09/95.90. At the NHRA Springnationals, he was driving the Cutlass bodied car.

Notes: Jim started the season at Pomona, where he qualified #11 with a 5.29/282.48. Another 5.29 at 288.27 advanced in round one, when his opponent, Ray Higley, broke. In round two, an off pace of 5.61/225.16 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.38/281. Epler qualified #2 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.19/290.97 behind Hofmann's 5.14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.26/288.73 beat Dean Skuza's 5.38/272. In the second round, Jack Wyatt fouled against him, and Jim's 5.81/180.46 advanced. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinal. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Jim's 5.32/280.51 "only" qualified #11. He had a close race in the opening round that saw his 5.31/289.85 beat Tony Pedregon's 5.32/282, but he lost to the eventual winner Hofmann, in round two. The NHRA Gatornationals was not a memorable outing for Epler. He only qualified #15 with a 5.35/285.26, and he lost to Skuza in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held in mid-April. His 5.31/286.98 qualified #9, and in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Chuck Etchells. Shortly after that, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There he ran 5.38/287.90 to qualify #11. An easy 6.34/150.40 advanced in round one, when Whit Bazemore got out of shape and shut down, but in round two, his 5.31/288.36 fell to Etchells' 5.20/293.

Notes: Jim ran 5.085 at 297.71 at Memphis in Paul Smith's car. We assume his other best times for 1997 were in this Winnebago car. We need to confirm everything and then assign the best times for the proper cars. Photo from 1997 US Nationals, where Jim was the first alternate at 5.181/286.25. That was Jim's first NHRA national event of the year. He qualified #10 at Maple Grove at 5.160/294.11 and beat Ron Capps in round one, 5.459/263.85 to 5.99/244. He lost to John Force in round two, 5.07/303 to 7.157/118.56. Jim then ran the Memphis race, qualifying #12 with the 5.085/297.71 and losing to Chuck Etchells in round one, 5.09/304 to 5.446/207.08. He qualified #12 at Ennis at 5.079/291.73 but lost to Force in the first round, 5.00/311 to 5.158/249.37. He qualified #11 at the Matco Supernationals at 5.154/291.16 and lost to Dean Skuza in round one, 5.17/302 to broke. That was Jim's last NHRA national event of the year.
