Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Chuck qualified #6 for the show and in the first round, beat Ron Sutherland with a 5.65/266.11. He picked up to a 5.55/260.34 in round two, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.41/253. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #13 and lost in the first round. Things didn't look much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where his 5.55 qualified on the "bump" spot. But he got around low qualified Jim White and in round two his 10.66/71.63 advanced when Richard Hartman broke. In the semifinals, he ran 5.40/267.61, but lost to eventual winner Force's 5.32/270. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals where Chuck qualified #9. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. |

Notes: Chuck didn't race at the first two NHRA events of '92, but he was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. He debuted his new sponsor, Nobody Beats the Wiz. His associate sponsors included Snap-On Tools, Mopar Performance, and Mothers. Other major sponsors included Superwinch and Kendall GT-1. At Houston, his 5.37/276.58 qualified #9 for the show. In the first round, an even better 5.26/272.47 lost to a quicker, leaving Cruz Pedregon at 5.29/252. Cruz would go on to win his first win in NHRA Funny Car competition. Etchells then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.28/274.55. A first-round 5.23/281.60 beat Tom Hoover, but he again fell to a Pedregon holeshot in round two. This time Cruz's 5.21/285 stopped his 5.17/281.77. The next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and Chuck's 5.35/272.89 qualified #4. He beat Paul Smith in the opening round with a 5.37/273.05, and a semifinal 5.40/261.02 beat Freddie Neely. He faced Mark Oswald in the final, and Etchells slowed to 5.50/235.23 in a runner-up finish to Oswald's 5.33/279. NHRA's next race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.27/270.75 qualified #5 and another 5.27 at 266.35 beat a tire-smoking Jim Epler in the first round. In the second round, Oswald broke a rear end, and Etchells' 5.30/273.30 advanced. In the semifinals, eventual winner John Force ran 5.22/265 to beat his 5.31/251.53. The NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis was next on the calendar, and Chuck's 5.35/274.64 qualified #7. He beat Hoover in round one, with a 5.37/275.48, but he lost to Al Hofmann in round two. At NHRA's seventh race of the season, the Springnationals at Columbus, Etchells grabbed his first pole of the year with a 5.23/279.85. He continued to look tough in the first round, where his 5.26/275.56 beat Gary Litton. In round two, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.28/271.16. But in the semifinals, he lost a close race with Hofmann. Etchells' quicker 5.26/278.89 lost to Al's 5.28/273. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 5.51/259.59 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, in the opening round, an off-pace 5.93/197.32 lost to Del Worsham's 5.64/266. |

Photo from Columbus 1993. | Chuck started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.14/285.44, but in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Del Worsham. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, his 5.41/265.01 qualified #10. He improved to 5.22/272.39 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.15/287. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Slick 50 Nationals. Etchells qualified #5 with a 5.16/270.59 and in round one, his 5.14/286.35 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.46/275. In the second round, both he and Cruz Pedregon ran 5.22 (Chuck at 276.83), but Cruz crossed the finish line first. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, Chuck ran 5.30/277.86 to qualify #8. His 5.21/274.30 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.28/281 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, but he broke against Hofmann in round two. He went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational and qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.27/266.03. But in the first round, while faced Bonin, Chuck did his burnout and then was unable to back up after his reverser failed. After having such a rough time in the first few events, things went a little more his way at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.09 at 291.07. In the first round Caminito fouled against him and Etchells advanced with a 6.05/167.09. Round two saw Whit Bazemore fail to show and Chuck soloed to a 5.26/271.41. In the semifinals, he and his opponent, Freddie Neely smoked the tires with Chuck recovering first with a 5.49/265.95 over Freddie's 5.69/262. This put him into the final against Force. Unfortunately, John got the victory. The sixth NHRA race of the season was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Etchells qualified #4 for the show with a 5.29/277.60. An easy 5.66/207.75 in round one, beat Brent Fanning, but in round two he lost a close race to Bonin. Gordie's 5.26/285 nipped his 5.27/274.97. At the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown, Chuck qualified #2 with a 5.04/288.46 just behind Force's 5.01/289. Etchells beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.18/281.69 while in round two his 5.22/279.32 took out Kenji Okazaki. A semifinal 5.27/265.17 topped Tom Hoover's close 5.30/283 and moved him into the final against Force. Once again, John stopped him in the final. Force won with a 5.14/290 while Etchells was busy smoking his tires to an 8.01/104.69 for the runner-up spot. On May 28 these two faced off in a best of three match race at the 1/8 mile Lancaster track. Things didn't go well for Etchells as he lost two straight with times of 4.13/170 and 3.92/178 while Force ran a best of 3.73. Repeated his 299.50 from Topeka at when he set Top Speed at Ennis Fall 1993. |

He qualified #1 at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals at Arizona with a 5.052 (Low ET) at 96.24. An opening round 5.13/288.92 beat Jack Wyatt and a second-round 5.17/289.38 stopped Kenji Okazaki. But he fell off to 5.20/247.79 in the semifinal that lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.18/278. Chuck's best times were the 5.052 from Phoenix and 297.61 from Maple Grove, although he duplicated the 5.052 at Ennis Fall. |

Notes: Etchells will always be remembered as the first to run a four-second time in an FC. His '96 season was good, as he was always competitive. Chuck qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.46/287.63. He improved to 5.33/252.17 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to John Force's 5.12/296. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.05/299.60 qualified second to Force's 5.04/301. A 5.12/295.27 in the first round beat Jim Epler, while he got to run a 5.36/290.69 solo in round two when Chuck Beal failed to show. An off-pace 5.41/289.85 still beat Whit Bazemore in the semi-finals, but fellow finalist force ran 5.14 in his semi-final win. The final saw Chuck slow to a 5.75/186.48 in a runner-up finish to John's 5.19/295. He always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '96 was no different. A 5.08/306.22 (Top Speed) qualified #3, and he was able to work his way into the final for the second straight race. He started by running a 5.18/294.50 over Gary Densham's 5.21/290. In round two, his 5.15/295.46 stopped Paul Smith's 5.17/285, and in the semi-final, he took out Del Worsham's 5.32/229 with a 5.07/305.18. Once again, the final would come down to Force vs. Etchells, and the results were the same as Force blasted out a track record 4.9301 for the win over Etchells' 5.23/302.01. NHRA's next race was the Supernationals held at Houston at the end of March. Chuck qualified #6 at 5.14/299.70. But he didn't hang around long in eliminations as Mark Oswald's 5.13/287 in round one beat his 5.20/244.96. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was just an eight-car field. It's good that no points were awarded at this race as Etchells failed to qualify. He came off the truck and ran 5.37, but it all went downhill as tire shake did him in. His next three passes were 5.62, 9.13, and 7.68. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Chuck qualified #7 at Joliet at 5.005/297.94 and beat Tony Pedregon in round one, 5.210/273.88 to 6.61/176. He fell off to an 11-second pass that lost to Dean Skuza's 4.98/292 in round two.
