Notes: Held several track records. Keith Black Racing Engines Test Car. Quickest time run under test conditions. Also ran 6.181/230.17 at Bakersfield 75. Don just made the show at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. He ran a 6.67 that was good for the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car show. That wasn't too bad considering that 30 cars attempted to qualify. But in the first round, he had trouble and lost to Gary Hazen's 7.89. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Don ran a great 5.97 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, in the first round, he ran a 6.33 that finished ahead of Don Garlits tire smoking 7.91. But he was disqualified for crossing the centerline. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #17 in the 32-car show with a 6.18/230.17. But in the first round, he fouled against James Warren. Ewald went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. He qualified #9 with a 6.46/225 in the sixteen-car show. In the first round, he was to race Frank Bradley, but he was shut off on the line with an oil leak.
