Notes: License 7D112. AKA Chubasco. | On February 26, Jack was at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals. He qualified #27 in the 32-car field with a 7.84/195.94, but failed to make the finals. He was at Bakersfield for the March Meet. On Saturday, March 5, he ran in the 64-car show for Sunday's sit out position. Jack beat Jim Dunn's 7.86/183 in the first round, with a 7.75/201.34. In the second round Garlits fouled against him and in the third round, he slowed to an 8.48/138.86 loss to Roy Thode's 7.75/194. On March 27, Pomona held a Jackpot Circuit race that had seventeen cars show up for the eight-car field. Ewell qualified, but in the first round, he took a little nap and his 7.95/201.34 lost to Ray Schultz's slower 8.08/178. At another Jackpot Circuit race at Riverside on April 17, Jack again made the show, but he lost to the eventual winner John Mulligan in the first round. The next day (April 18) he went to Lions for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, his best of 7.89/198.22 failed to qualify, and he was second alternate. On June 4th, he was at Lion's for an eight-car show. He qualified #3 with a 7.70/209.30 and a 7.65/213.76 (Top Speed) beat Frank Pedregon while in the semifinals his 7.57/212.76 beat Steve Carbone. In the finals, he met a surprising Al Freeman who was driving a little Chevy-powered junior fueler. Al had been running in the 8.0's. It seemed like it was an easy victory for Jack, but the little junior fueler got out on him and Jack's 7.95/203.16 failed to catch Freeman's 8.06/180. He won over an eight-car field at Lions on June 18. A first-round 7.72/211.76 beat John Martin's 7.76/203 and in the semifinals he soloed with an engine saving 12.64. For the victory he beat Dick Huerta. He was at Lion's on July 2 for an eight-car show where his 7.74/210.00 qualified last. He stepped up to 7.61/214.28 in the first round, to beat James Warren's 7.74/206, but in the semifinals his 8.01/203.60 lost to Gary Gabelich's 7.81/161.

Notes: Ewell was at Beeline Dragway in January for the AHRA Winternationals. His 7.94 qualified #25. In the opening round, he fouled against Bob Downey, who was driving the "Howard Cam Special." At Bakersfield, his 7.44 qualified #31. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Gabelich in the opening round. Jack attempted to qualify for an eight-car show at Carlsbad on March 5. It was a hard field to make, considering that 23 cars were trying to qualify. Jack's best of 7.32/213.28 left him as the fourth alternate. He also competed at the HRM Championships at Riverside in April. This was another 32-car field, but his 7.74/203 in the first round fell to Jim Dunn's 7.49/212.

Notes: Originally built for dry lakes and salt flats racing, they rebuilt it to drag race. They took a win in B/Fuel Competition Coupe at Colton on Feb. 9 with 14.03. According to Dave Sorenson, "It met its demise on the Fontana fire-up road when the throttle stuck and the car hit a phone pole. Driver ok, but car was not. I saw it happen, sickened me to see such a nice car gone." The car was featured in the March 1963 issue of Hot Rod, so the crash that Sorenson refers to must have occurred after then. Notes: Ewing was at Warner Robins for the NHRA Southeast National Open at the end of October. It was supposed to be an eight-car show, but the field was two cars short. He qualified #4 at 9.42/145.86. In the first round, he improved by over two tenths to 9.20/149.75, but it wasn't enough to beat low qualifier Lamar Walden's 9.02/151. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot National Open. He was down on power and was lucky that only eight cars had shown. His 10.01 qualified last, and an off-pace 10.31/117.49 lost to Walden's 9.04/148.
