Notes: Ewing drove the former Johnny Dowey Camaro at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 7.67, and in round one, he advanced when Bob Harris fouled. In round two, his 7.72/180.36 beat Reid Whisnant's 7.96/174. In the semifinals, he faced the car's old owner, Dowey, and Billy's 7.73/180.72 put Johnny's new T-Bird on the trailer. Billy faced Lee Shepherd in the final, and although he ran a strong 7.75/177.51, he lost to Lee's 7.70/183. On July 8, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 7.56/183.29 qualified #4. He failed to reach the finals. He was at Norwalk in August for the IHRA World Nationals. Billy's 7.53/182.18 qualified #2 behind Shepherd's 7.48/184. He beat Bob Harris and Jim Ruth before losing to Roy Hill in the semifinals. In September, Ewing qualified #2 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open with a 7.50. Shepherd led the field with a 7.44. Billy lasted until the semifinal before losing to the eventual winner Rickie Smith. Number 4 in IHRA.

Notes: Ewing qualified at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a career-best (to this point) 7.37/187. He then ran 7.41/186 to beat Terry Walters and 7.43/186 over a fouling Pat Musi. A 7.44/186 advanced to the final in the semifinals when Roy Hill fouled away a 7.31/192. It was an all Camaro final where he met Darrell Alderman. Unfortunately for Billy, Alderman got the win in Jerry Haas' car. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, a 7.44/189.47 qualified #5. He beat Tom Sutton in the first round, with a 7.45/190.67. In the second round, his 7.49/181.81 lost to Tim Nabors' 7.46/189. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, Billy was a little off his usual pace as he "only" qualified #11 with a 7.62/182.18. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.69/178.21 fell to Bob Glidden's 7.44/187.11. His next stop was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Ewing qualified #7, and he defeated Tim Nabors in the opening round. He lost to Alderman in round two. Milan, Michigan, was the next race on the IHRA tour for its Northern Nationals run on July 6. Ewing qualified #8 with a 7.52/186.72. Another 7.52 at 189.47 in the first round, stopped Terry Adams' 7.60/183. But he lost to eventual winner Glidden in round two. He ran well at Edgewater Park for the IHRA Summernationals. A 7.55/184 qualified #7. He beat Nabors in round one. Then he took out Hill's 7.57 with a quick-leaving 7.62 before fouling against Rickie Smith in the semifinal. He ran even better at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 7.48/184.42 qualified #2 behind Alderman's 7.45/183. An opening round 7.49/180.00 beat a tire shaking Neil Moyer. In round two, his 7.50/180.36 defeated Adams' 7.60/183. Alderman fouled against him in the semifinal, and Ewing advanced with a 7.56/180.00. He faced Smith in the final, and his 7.64/180.00 finished runner-up to Rickie's 7.58/184. Norwalk was the next stop for the IHRA World Nationals held on August 24. Billy qualified #5 but was upset in the first round, by Ed Dixon. No times were recorded in their race. Notes: Billy qualified #5 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.37/191. He improved to 7.32/191 in the first round to beat Charlie Buck, while a 7.38/191 beat Gary Hajek's 7.41/188 in round two. He fell off to a 7.43/191 in the semifinals that lost to Roy Hill's 7.30/191. He "only" qualified #13 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, and he shut down to 18.36/44.73 in round one that lost to Bob Olson's 7.39/189. He also lost in the opening round at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals when he took a little snooze on the line, and his 7.41/193 lost to Doug Kirk's 7.61/180. He did much better at Atco, where he ran a best of 7.30/193 and made it into the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Bob Glidden. He ran his career-best (to this point) speed at Milan during the IHRA Northern Nationals held in the first week of July. His 196.50 tied the IHRA speed record that was set there by Jerry Haas. He lasted until the second round before Glidden's 7.25/193 stopped his 7.36/196.50. Glidden went on to win again. The Drag Racing List Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9, listed 7.309. Notes: Billy was at Carolina Dragway in March for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. His 7.36/190.39 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. In the first round, his 7.51 lost to Doug Kirk's 7.34. At Atco Raceway on April 27 for the IHRA Eastern Nitrous Nationals, Billy ran a strong 7.11/191.08 in the first round over Kirk. Even with that strong pass, it didn't give him Low ET. That honor fell to Rickie Smith's 7.08 IHRA record in qualifying. Ewing failed to make the finals at that race. He was at Bristol in early June for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 7.31/188.75 qualified #7. He made it into round two before fouling against Smith. He won the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals. There, he qualified #7 with a 7.19/193.92. A first-round 7.18/195.04 beat Smith's 7.20/193.87. A second-round holeshot 7.19/194.42 beat Tim Nabors' quicker 7.13/194.05. In the semifinal, a 7.15/195.02 beat Billy Huff's 7.16/194.09. In the final, he met Joe Folgore, and another 7.15/195.04 took the win when Joe broke. Number 5 in IHRA.
