Notes: Fasching attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 7.90/172.74 missed the 7.88 "bump." Gene was the third alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.05/170.45 best. Shortly after that, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. His 8.14/169.18 qualified #9, but he lost early. He went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his 8.42/162.16 best failed to qualify for the eight-car field. His 7.96/172.41 qualified #9 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, setting up an opening-round showdown with low qualifier Lee Shepherd. Fasching lost that race as few were getting around Shepherd in the first round! He did better at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. There, his 7.86/173.74 qualified #12. Gene cut a great light in the opening round, and his 7.92 beat Warren Johnson's 7.83. In round two, he fouled away a 7.94/173.04 against Ronnie Manchester, who advanced with a 7.95/173. Gene's best times of the year were 7.838 at the World Finals and 175.78 at Indy.

Notes: At Pomona, Gene's best of 7.81/176.12 failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. He was the eighth alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the "bump" with a 7.66 at 180.94 mph. Fasching improved to a 7.64/181.29 in the first round, which beat Frank Iaconio's T-Bird. In the second round, he slowed to a 7.71/179.49, which was beaten by Gordie Rivera's 7.61/175. He failed to make the show at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the fourth alternate with a 7.69/180.00 best. He skipped Baton Rouge, but was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his best of 7.74/176.53 was fifth alternate. It wasn't until the NHRA Mile High Nationals that Gene qualified at another national event. In Denver, his 8.11/168.76 qualified on the "bump" spot. An 8.25/166.05 lost in the first round, to Rivera's 8.07/170. Fasching ran NHRA Brainerd, MN 8/86 (DNQ). He tried hard to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but his 7.70/181.48 fell short (tenth alternate). Notes: The first race Gene qualified for in '89 was the Mile High Nationals in Denver where he turned a lot of heads by running a strong 7.85/174.41 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. Also 7.871 at 174.72 at Denver 89. He didn't qualify at any other NHRA races after that. He was first alternate at the Northstar Nationals with a 7.51/183.71. And at the US Nationals, a 7.433/184.84 was fifth alternate. That wasn't too bad considering there were 50 cars trying to make the field.
