Notes: Gene Mooneyham drove the car before Faust, but crashed it at Paradise Mesa outside of San Diego. Car was originally a Ford flathead that ran 120 mph passes, per Brian Lohnes, and was later changed to a Hemi, repaired after the crash, initially painted silver by Al Sharp, but then changed to blue by Mooneyham. Faust was the body man. He was a drag racer himself and went by the nickname “Jungle.” The guy was reputed to be able to drive anything and he said he could back that claim up. Mooneyham liked what he saw in Faust and asked him to drive the car, although with the new blower atop the Hemi, Mooneyham was worried that Faust would be unable to tame the beast. One of the really neat features of the car was the eight long, individual exhaust pipes. These pipes made the car insanely loud, especially for Faust who by all accounts was sitting inside a base drum, in his center-steer position, surrounded by noise.rnThe Hemi was a little bugger, a 331ci model that was bored and stroked to near 390 ci, typically running a 60-70 percent load of nitro. That depended on the day, the track, and the competition. According to Lohnes, Mooneyham sold the car in 1963, and the new owner had Faust drive, but they blew up their first time out. Not sure if the information we have for subsequent years is corrects. JM

Notes: Faust was driving the car at Lions on November 13 for a best-of-three-match race against Dick Landy. It was not Landy's day as he lost three straight to the Corvette. The Dodge broke a transmission in their first race and then blew two rear ends in each of the next two races, while Larry won the match with a 9.27/161.87 best. Blown fuel. The listed times are believed to be with a 327 small block. The team switched from the 327 to a 427 shortly after. Don Rackemann and Pat Foster also drove this in 1966. This car became the "Gypsy" Corvette, driven by Jungle Jim Liberman, amongst others. (2/25/66 Drag World)

Notes: Ran 7.58 (qualified #3) at AHRA Winters at Beeline Arizona 1965. AKA the Blue Car. Drag Sport Illustrated in a 1965 wrap up said this car was the scourge of the area. | Larry was driving this car at Lions for an eight-car show on January 16. The small 331 Hemi dominated the race over the bigger 392 powered cars. Faust qualified #1 with a 7.61/199.10 then set Low ET and Top Speed in a first-round victory over John Wilson with a 7.58/203.16. He had an easy run in the semifinals when Mike Sorokin fouled in the "Surfers" entry. Larry won the event, running a 7.63/201.78 in the final. As mentioned, he qualified #3 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but a first-round 7.98/200.88 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60/200. He beat Tom McEwen to take Top Eliminator on the second day of the 2-day Summer Drag Racing Championships at Fontana on Aug. 22, 1965, with a 7.78, 204.54 clocking. Notes: Streamliner, possibly body mounted on "Jungle 4"? | Here’s yet another short-lived streamlined attempt, the Mooneyham-Ferguson-Jackson-Faust machine, whose Jocko-designed metalflake-blue bodywork enclosed not only the cockpit but also the front tires. The sleek-looking piece spent just two days on the track, at Lions Drag Strip and San Fernando Raceway, May 8-9, 1965, and the popular “Jungle Four” SoCal team never ran better than 8.20 at 197.80. Just prior to building this car, the team -- Gene Mooneyham, driver “Jungle Larry" Faust, Wayne Ferguson, and Jerry Jackson -- had set a new Standard 1320 A/FD record of 7.53 at Lions, so the 8.20 was quite a disappointment, but was the body too good? According to Mooneyham’s wife, Dorothy, “The front grabbed the ground like a vacuum cleaner,” perhaps creating too much power-sapping downforce. The car is now in the Garlits museum. - NHRA.com, Phil Burgess info. | Previous entry for this car had a best of 8.25/197.80 at San Bernardino, CA. After running this car for two days in 1965, the team went back to their conventional AAFD, information for which is no contained in the other entry. | This short-lived streamlined dragster experiment only lasted for two races on the May 8/9 weekend at Lions and San Fernando. The times were a disappointment, so they took off the beautiful Jocko body and returned to the basic no-frills dragster look that had given them the most success. So much for streamlining. - MB
