Notes: This was Animal's first attempt at Pro Stock. The '71 Comet had a 427 Tunnel Port and Top Loader 4-speed. On its second time out at the Oswego, Illinois dragstrip on June 5th-1975. The Detroit Locker malfunctioned and he rolled and flipped it twelve times. Jim explains, "As always in crashes, it was a great run. Ouch. The car was destroyed - only the drive train was salvageable. I took a hard beating, but I recovered quickly and went back to running Tuff Eliminator with my "Big Animal" '57 Merc for the rest of that summer."

Notes: Jim bought this Pinto Pro Stock from Mark Seaman and Pete Rich in September of 1975. It was red, white, and blue and originally called "The Stone Pony." He repainted it Animal Orange and put "Animal Jim" in big letters on the side for the first time instead of having a car name. Seaman and Rich gave Jim a great jump start and taught him a lot about running the car and Pro Stock racing. The Pinto was a good trainer. Mark Seaman and Pete Rich had built the Pinto cloning Gapp & Roush's Pro Stock Pinto at the time. It had a Gapp & Roush 366 Cleveland engine, 4-speed Lenco, and a Dana rear-end with 6:1 gears and it ran 9s at 150+ mph. Animal Jim ran this car in AHRA, UDRA, NHRA, IHRA and Garlits' PRO races plus many match races from September '75 to the end of '79. Photo from 78 AHRA Winternationals.

Notes: Jim bought this Pinto Pro Stock from Mark Seaman and Pete Rich in September of 1975. It was red, white, and blue and originally called "The Stone Pony'" He repainted it Animal Orange and put "Animal Jim" in big letters on the side for the first time instead of having a car name. Photo from 1978 AHRA Winternationals. The 9.05/151 is from an old time slip from a PRO event held at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, Wisconsin in 1977. Animal Jim qualified 7th in the 16-car Pro Stock field which also included "Dyno Don" Nicholson and "Grumpy" Jenkins.

Notes: Ironically, just one week after I had beaten Jerry Haas in an exciting Pro Stock final in 1980, I was racing him again in Humboldt, Iowa when severe tire shake bent the rear sway bar and I crashed. At that same event, fellow racers Ray Acklin and Rod Urish from Lawrence, Kansas, had blown their engine, but all was not lost. While Zeke was being repaired, I teamed up with Ray and Rod and drove their Pinto. We ran my Ford Cleveland engines in the car and I drove. Up to this point, they had never qualified at an AHRA race. We went to AHRA Summer Nationals in Kansas City and put the "Little Black Beast" right in the show. Ray and Rod were thrilled. Along with several more AHRA National events, we did some match racing with the Mid-America Circuit Pro Stock events of which Rod was President at that time. They were great guys and we're all great friends to this day.

From 1979 to 1990, it ran in every sanction, circuit, and mode possible. After a 1980 crash, the car was rebuilt and updated in 1981. Jim went back to his trademark Hugger Orange instead of black. (He had crashed a white car and then a black car, so he concluded neutral colors crashed more than orange ones.) Anyway, Zeke and Jim were together again. Originally powered by small block Clevelands, in 1981 Zeke became the first "legal" AHRA (American Hot Rod Association) Nitrous small block Pro Stock which was sponsored by NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems, Inc.) This combination was considered "Unlimited" and ran with Mountain Motored cars. Jim ran the listed 418-inch motor and also a 363-inch Nitrous motor, which ran 8.30/168 at AHRA Dragway 42.

He qualified #2 with an 8.21, just behind Tom Chelbana's 8.20. These two would meet in the final." Animal Jim" ran 8.28/167.91 and 8.26/166 to beat Tony Rizzo and Benny Flowers. In the final, the car got out of shape, and his 8.64 finished runner-up to Chelbana's 8.25. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Once again, he qualified #2, but this time it was behind Chuck Aronson. It was these two who would make up the final round. Feurer ran 8.28/168.22 and 8.39/167.59 to reach the final. But Aronson's former Glidden Fairmont got the victory with an 8.18/169 over Jim's 8.48/166.66. Jim qualified #1 at the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis on June 6 with an 8.11/171.11. An opening round 8.14/168.23 beat Dan Bruckner, while a semifinal 8.20/166.98 beat Leroy Roeder. A final round 8.13/169.50 got the victory over Gary Duckworth's 8.38/163. Traction was horrible as he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.74. He beat Roy Hill and Jim Basko to reach the final where he faced Benny Flowers. Jim was late off the line and despite setting Low ET at 8.69 he finished runner-up for the second year in a row to Flowers' 8.73. He was at Tulsa in May for the AHRA Springnationals where he qualified #6 with an 8.57. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round.

The engine was ailing after qualifying, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.74 lost to James Justice's quick-leaving 8.77. In September, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Over 30 cars showed up and attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Jim failed to crack into the field that had a 7.66 "bump."

Notes: From AHRA and UDRA stardom, Jim's big Merc became one of the original inspirations of the Pro Modified revolution. Over 12 years, "Zeke" with Animal Jim driving and wrenching, achieved countless wins, awards, and records, including three World Championships in a row. - 1988, '89 & '90. Several other notable accomplishments were achieved, including winning the first-ever Quick 8 at the 1988 IHRA Winternationals at Darlington in a final against Robbie Vandergriff, followed by the Top Sportsman title the next day. Crew Chief Al Schmitt and his right-hand man Ed Fogelsonger put Jim in many winner's circles from 1987 to '89.

Notes: 1988 Popular Hot Rodding Championship #20 (Final PHR). Photo from Pro Stock final round. Feurer qualified No. 1 at 7.30, defeated Jerry McCormick in round one, 7.43 to 7.89, and a 7.54 put away Gary Duckworth in the semis to face #2 qualifier Bill Kuhlmann in the final. Kuhlmann got crossed up, and Feurer took an easy 7.62 to 7.96 win. At the IHRA Winternationals in March, he ran 7.28/194 while winning the quick eight shootout, but he lost a ring gear just before Top Sportsman eliminations were to begin. Jim qualified #1 at the UDRA Summernationals, but lost to Kuhlmann in the semifinal. He qualified #2 at the UDRA Buckeye Nationals and ran 7.80s at 170 to win, beating Jeff Wick in the final. At the UDRA Show-Me Nationals, Jim reset the UDRA record to 7.35, but he lost early. He was the UDRA Pro Stock Champion. Claimed best for '88 was 7.23/199.30.

Notes: From AHRA and UDRA stardom, Jim's big Merc became one of the original inspirations of the Pro Modified revolution. In the span of 12 years, "Zeke", with Animal Jim driving and wrenching, achieved countless wins, awards, and records which included three World Championships in a row. - 1988, '89 & '90. Several other notable accomplishments were achieved, including being a finalist in the inaugural 1989 USSC event. Photo: 1989 World Series of Drag Racing - Cordova. "In 1989, I won against Jerry Haas to cap my second UDRA World Championship in a row. There is no doubt in my mind, Haas', or anyone else who had witnessed this fantastic run that it was Zeke's best performance ever. I had pulled out all stops on this final. Conditions were superb. My gal Shirley M. had just broken a track record in my lane the run before and left me with a beautiful surface. Even Haas said in the shutdown as we were pulling up our chutes. "Animal, that was an awesome run. I redlit and you still beat me by 3 bus-lengths. I can't wait to see the numbers." "To everyone's dismay, however, the clocks had gotten screwed up. I was awarded the win, but there were no ET or mph times for either of us. That run had to be a high 6 and over 200. "Zeke" and I were gypped out of a 6 sec., 200 mph run and an ET, mph record. That just shows you that you can win and still be disappointed." - A.J.

Notes: In May of 1990, Rick Jones built Jim a new Pro Modified Ford Probe as a sponsor and partner. Jim started the 1990 season as one of the first Pro Mods in the business. The Probe was one of Rick's first cars that he built as R.J. Race Cars, and it was one of the first cars ever built as a pure Pro Modified car. With features like a front fuel cell, escape hatch, stretched wheelbase, full deck funny car wing, VFN fiberglass body (note funny car nose), etc., it was the benchmark for the 1990 IHRA inaugural Pro Mod rule book. This car became the first carbed Ford to break 200 mph on July 4/1990, at Norwalk, Ohio, at a USSC (United States Super Circuit) event. It was also the first Ford in the sixes in September 1990 at the IHRA US Open at Darlington. Jim went on to win the USSC Championship that year. This car was featured in many magazines over the next two years. Photo shows Jim paired with Scotty Cannon at the 1990 Bristol IHRA Spring Nats.
