Notes: At the OCIR Manufacturers Funny Car Open, Fisher attempted to qualify Sturm's new Corvair, but his two runs of 8.50 and 8.71 failed to make the show. On May 17 he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. His first-round 7.92/181.44 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.71/190. At the end of May, the team was back at OCIR for the Funny Car 500. In qualifying, they had a bad blower explosion that wrecked a lot of the interior tin. They were unable to run in competition. Joe qualified at OCIR's March of Dimes race on June 14 with an 8.08. Unfortunately, the run came at a price as a rod let go and went through the side of the engine block. They were unable to run eliminations. Joe drove Sturm's car at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19. He qualified third with a 7.67 and lasted until the second round before a 7.79 by Gene Conway beat his 8.00.

Notes: Built in late 1955, this dragster was driven by both Lyle Fisher and Red Greth. It began the 1956 season with a carbureted 1948 Ardun-Merc engine. They swapped the Merc for the Chrysler Hemi from Red Henslee's roadster in mid-October. That bumped them up another ten miles an hour. Newspapers infrequently identified the driver, but we know Fisher got the fastest speed in 1956 in the dragster. On Mar. 18 at Holtville, Calif., Fisher drove the dragster to a track-record 133 mph. On Apr. 29, Greth clocked 130 mph at Davis-Monthan AFB for a track record. On June 17, the dragster upped the Davis-Monthan record to 130.80 mph. At Perryville on July 1, the dragster turned the Top Speed of the meet with 124 mph. Two weeks later, at Davis-Monthan, they won the dragster class with 120.62 mph. On Sep. 30 at Holtville, they took Top Eliminator with 132.15 mph. A week later, they notched another Top Eliminator victory at Perryville with 128.54 mph. They made their final pass with the Ardun-Merc engine at Yuma on Oct. 14, setting a track record with 125.87 mph. They ran for the first time with the Chrysler engine at Davis-Monthan on Oct. 21, turning 138.21 mph for a new track record. On Nov. 3 at Perryville, Lyle drove the dragster to a new track record at 142 mph. On Dec. 2, the dragster took Top Eliminator at Perryville with 136.36 mph. Powered by a 354-cid rear-mounted Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Other records include an 8.03/175.78 in March 1960. A 180.72 was backed up by a 179.28 on October 2/1960. The Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark was 183.67 eight days later in Alton, Ill. Notes: Fisher took top eliminator at the World Series of Drag Racing event at Cordova on Aug. 28 with a speed of 184.426 mph. However it was a run earlier in the day against Bob Haines in the California Equipment A/FD that had people buzzing. He clocked an unofficial 204.546 mph. His speed was nullified however because the clocks had blown a fuse either before or during his run. No world record. On Friday night at the 3-day event, he clocked 180 mph and during Saturday's running he ran 8.98 seconds. Notes: The Speed Sport modified roadster campaigned by Lyle Fisher, Gary "Red" Greth, and Don Maynard, one of the more popular cars of its era, produced record-setting performances from 1956 through the early 1960s. Powered by a rear-mounted 354" Chrysler Hemi, the 1,500-pound roadster stunned observers with a speed record of 160.14 mph at the 1957 ATAA World Series at Cordova, Ill., and finished the year with a clocking of 169.11 in Tucson, Ariz. Records set in 1960 include an 8.03/175.78 at Davis-Monthan in Tuscon (probably bogus), a 180.72 backed up by a 179.28 on October 2, and the Drag News 1320 Standard Modified Fuel Roadster speed mark of 183.67 mph set eight days later in Alton, Ill. The Speed Sport roadster remained competitive well into the mid-1960s, qualifying for Top Fuel at the 1963 AHRA Winternationals and making its final appearance at the 1964 Bakersfield March Meet.
