Notes: Arend's cross-species split-window Sting Ray is well-remembered by fans of mid-'60s drag machinery. With a late-model, ram-tubed 426 Dodge hemi feeding the horses though a Torqueflite trans into a quick-change rear end, a straight front axle up front and slicks suspended in massively hogged-out wheel wells in the rear, it had an in-your-face look that stuck in your head. Looks aside, Arend's "Mongoose" won Best Engineered Car at the '65 Nationals, where he reset the BM/SP speed record to 133.72 mph. The following year at the '66 Winternationals at Pomona he turned 135 mph times.

Notes: The very first Green Monster built by the Arfons brothers was a three-wheeler slathered in John Deere green tractor paint. "Go" was provided by a 95-horse Olds flathead six that fed power to a Packard rear end. In a 1990 interview Art Arfons said the ungainly machine would do 1986 in the quarter before the valves floated. Showing an impressive growth curve, their second Greem Monster had twice as many wheels and 15 times the horsepower. - RT

Notes: The late Art Arfons said in later years that this "was a mean car to drive" and "drove like a tank." Too heavy and slow off the line to log respectable ETs, the car with a tugboat clutch would top-end like crazy and was the first car to make the Hot Rod Magazine 150 mph Club. The Arfons boys accomplished the feat on the opening day of the 1956 Nationals at Kansas City, Mo. (11.41/150.0). The two shared driving duties. Notes: Sidestepping their usual 1,710-cube V-12 Allisons, the Arfons brothers chose the more powerful 1,650 cid Rolls-Royce Merlin engine to power GM #11. The Merlin V-1650, powerplant for most versions of the P-51 Mustang, the later P-40 Warhawk, and many of the RAF's warplanes, was built in the US by Packard during WWII. Notes: This iteration of the Green Monster was built to showcase a WWII-era Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12, which appears quite similar in pictures to their typical go-to mill, the 1710-cube Allison. The factory-rated 1,300-hp Merlin engine (1,700 claimed in race trim) is widely considered to be the factor that cemented the P-51 Mustang's reputation as the best all-around fighter of WWII. Also used in the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito, and numerous other warplanes. The Arfons' most successful piston-engined car, Green Monster #11 was raced frequently from 1957/59. The Merlin-powered "Monster" twice set the mph record at Union Grove on July 6/1958, with speeds of 146.58 and 150.00 flat. - RT | Set Top Speed at 161.87 at NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City on 8/30/58.

Notes: The Arfons brothers built several aircraft-engined dragsters that were not in their numbered Green Monster series. This was one of them. It was one of the cars the brothers took to the Mar-Car Drag News 1000 Championship held at Oklahoma City JayCee Drag Strip at the Fairgrounds on August 28/30. They also brought Green Monster #12. If one of the Arfons brothers drove it, it would have been Art because Walt had suffered broken bones in his feet when his flywheel exploded at a race in early August in Dunkirk, New York. Notes: Arfons apparently debuted the new "Cyclops" on the backstretch of the Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, Fla., as previewed in the 1/06/62 Daytona Beach Herald-Journal. Notes: In a 1990 interview, Art Arfons was quoted as saying Green Monster #3 was to be powered by a surplus Jacobs 5-cylinder radial aircraft engine. There are at least 10 models of 7-cylinder Jacobs engines from this period, but none with 5 cylinders, so this exact quote is likely incorrect. Displacement on the 7-cylinder mills ran from 755/915 cubic inches. According to Art this Green Monster was intended as a vehicle for older brother Dale, but when he lost interest it was never completed. - RT
