Notes: Sidney Foster was one of the first match bash racers out of Louisiana. Foster raced his T-Bolt Fairlane in Super Stock at first, but quickly upgraded the car as the funny car craze began. Sid ran the "Quick Draw" out of the family Ford dealership. The T-Bolt had a 427 wedge backed with a 4-speed transmission. Foster became a regular at tracks in Southern Louisiana and Southeast Texas. The car was changed over the 1965 season, and eventually, the "Quick Draw" ran as a roadster. The wheelstanding Ford ran a 10.33/134 best. The T-Bolt was replaced by new steel match bash Mustang in 1966. (Photo and info courtesy the Foster family). |

Notes: Former Dick Harrell match-racer sold to Cooley & Foster at the end of the '64 season. He kept the 427 Z-11 motor he'd run in it to temporarily power his Chevy II, "Retribution II." While it's possible the new owners kept the Z-ll mill from their own full-size '63, much more likely they filled the empty engine bay with the just-out Chevrolet semi-hemi, a 396 opened up to 427 cid. |

Notes: Injected. Foster raced this car in three configurations from 1964/66: As a legal S/S Thunderbolt, as AWB match racer, and as a roadster funny car. Foster may have run as many as three cars in 1966, including this one, an early Mustang, and a Holman-Moody Mustang. Biloxi MS 1966 (11/11/66 Drag News) - DD |

Notes: Foster had a bad fire at Lakeland early in November. He was there for a four-car race. He got out on Don Gay in his first race and looked to have him beat until the Mustang shut down and Gay roared past in the lights. He was unable to race any more that day as Sonny Atkins rolled his blown altered roadster, and it ended up coming to a rest on top of Foster's Mustang. | Did this car switch to a blower in the late season? It would make sense, as many FCs did. - RT |

Notes: This was one of the first five funny's to top 200 mph. Making a lot of horsepower to push that big frontal area to those speeds. Sid debuted this car for some test runs at Memphis on August 17. The car had just been finished earlier that week. With some old slicks on the car the ET's weren't the best, but on the second pass he ran 174 and on his last of three runs he turned 179.64. This was on a 184 track record. Best et in '68 was a 7.51. Confirmed 7.76 Jackson Sid raced at an eight-car show at New York on October 13. He singled in the first round, when Ken Poffenberger failed to fire, and another single run of 7.88 got him into the final when Al Hanna was unable to show. In the final, a 7.89 finished second best to Henry Garcia's 7.73 in the Car Shop Camaro. - RH | Photo from the '68 OCIR mfg. meet. Ran 7.80s. |

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and the car was powered by a 426 Chrysler Hemi on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. - BS (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Notes: Sid started driving this car early in June. He was in Tyler, Texas, for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Burkhart on June 7. He won the match. Times he reeled off since jumping behind the wheel included 7.52/199.10 at Memphis on June 11. He qualified seventh at the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.91/192.71, beat Mike Burkhart in the first round, with a 7.79/196.50, but lost to Tom McEwen in the second round, 7.67/185 to Foster's 7.60/201.79. He still managed to have the fastest Ford Funny Car at the meet with the 201.79 pass. On June 27, he went to Courtland, Tenn., and ran 7.51. He then reset the ET record at National Trail with a 7.63/201.79 on June 29. Sid raced at an eight-car show at Suffolk on July 4, but an 8.03/185.04 lost to Dean LaPole in Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round. The next day it was off to Blaney, S.C., where he set another track record at 7.93/200.44. Another best-of-three-match race was run at LaPlace on July 20 against Don Gay's "Infinity" GTO. Sid won the first race with an 8.51/174.41 when Roy Gay got out of shape and hit the guardrail with minor damage to the GTO. Gay evened the score in the second race, winning with an 8.02/189 over the Torino's quicker 7.99/188.28. Foster lost an engine on the line in the third race, and Gay soloed to the match race victory. The following week (July 27), the "Super Ford" was at Southland Dragway for a best of three match against Leonard Hughes in the "Candies & Hughes" 'Cuda. Foster won the first race by default with an 8.15 when the 'Cuda broke a transmission in the first race. A new trans was installed, and in the second race, Hughes' 7.48/203 beat Sid's 7.83/191.89. In the third and deciding race, Foster ran a strong 7.67 but still lost to Leonard's 7.57/203. Foster lost to Gene Snow at Rockford Manufacturer's meet but beat Pat Minick with a 7.75/196.50 and Arnie Beswick with a 7.85. He ran a best-of-three-match race against Bobby Wood at Palmetto on August 9. Sid fouled in the first round while running a 7.72/194; the run also cost him a transmission. Wood won the first race with a 7.56/198, then singled to two more wins when the Super Ford couldn't return. A big win came at the AHRA Drag World Championships. There he beat Bob Sullivan in the final. He went to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals but failed to crack the 7.54 "bump." On September 6, he ran at Bristol for the AHRA All-American. Sid beat Jim Maybeck in the first round, with a 7.80, before losing to Ronnie Runyan in round two. He lost early at Nashville's King of the Funnys race on September 13, where Runyan got him again, this time in the first round. On October 4, Foster showed up at the National Dragster open at National Trail. He was gunning for the NHRA Funny Car speed record of 198.67. On his first and only pass, he ran 202.74 but could not stop the car and crashed into the safety net. Sid was OK, but the Torino body was crunched up. He raced Wood again in mid-October for another best of three match at Shelby Country. Wood fouled in the first race, but Sid still managed to drive past him with a 7.49/201.78, tying the track speed record. In the second race, the Ford's transmission let go, and Bobby won with a 7.59/193, but in the last race, Sid sewed up the match by setting both ends of the track record with a 7.41/202.24 blast that beat Wood, who fouled again. On November 2, he raced at the Sears Point North/South Championships. The car ran well, hitting a 7.89/194.60, but he failed to make the finals. Sid qualified second on the Ford team at OCIR on November 7, and after the renewed, he returned on November 16 for their manufacturers meet; Sid won the first round with a motor blowing 8.11/186.72. But that was the only run he made due to the blown engine. According to a Drag News issue from November '69, Sid had mentioned that the car had run a best of 7.11/209. No mention of where these times were run. (Drag News 11/69) Ran 7.74 at first Annual Manufacturers' Championships at Rockford (Ill.) Dragway. - RT | Also 196.06 at Rockford Dragway, Byron, Ill., 7/69 | As far as I know, this car always campaigned with a Cammer. In 1970 the Mustang had a 426 installed to run at the manufacturer's meet, but Sid insisted that the SOHC was back for the next meet. |

Notes: Foster faced Jim Liberman at a best two-out-of-three match race at Cecil County in March. Liberman beat him two straight with runs of 7.83/171 over the Super 'Cuda's 8.10/183.66 and 7.60/187 over Sid's 8.07/169. On March 16, Sid was at Shelby International, one of four fuel FCs running. He won his first race over Clare Sanders in Liberman's second car with a 7.95/193.06. In the second race, Foster fouled against Dick Harrell. A third race was run between Harrell and the "Super 'Cuda." Sid didn't foul this time, but his 7.76/196.50 lost to Harrell's track records of 7.51/204.53. Not long after this, Sid started campaigning the "Super Ford" Torino. - RH |

Notes: After driving the successful "Super Ford" Torino in '68 and '69, Foster had this new 118" Logghe built Mustang for '70. The car used a stock displacement 427 SOHC with M/T rods and pistons. A pair of Joe Lunati cams were also used with the stock heads and valve train. Up top, a Cragar intake manifold supported the 20% overdriven GMC 6/71 blower. Enderle injectors were used. A Coleman and Taylor prepared C-6 transferred the estimated 1,500 hp back to the Detroit Locker with 3.70 gears. The Mustang weighed in at 2,180 lbs. Cammer-powered Mustang set a short-lived track record at Gainesville at 7.296 (193.13) on February 13 for the Gatornats. The record was beaten the same day by Larry Arnold. On April 12, Foster was at Delmar for a match race against Charlie Allen. Sid had handling problems in their first race, and his 11.54/168.66 lost to Allen, who blew a transmission at 10.22/125. The Mustang lost a transmission in the second race and slowed to 10.32/78.12 to lose to the Dodge's 8.01/188. Sid blew his engine in the final race, and Allen ran 7.94/182 to win three straight. He then went to Connecticut for another match race. This time he was up against Jimmy King, who was driving Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette. Both had problems on their first run, but Foster's 8.43/178.57 beat the 'Vette's 9.61/160. King fouled in the second race, and Sid saw it, so he coasted through for the win. In the final race, the Mustang broke while Jimmy ran a great 7.64/189. Sid took on "Jungle Jim" Liberman in a best of three match at a 1,000-foot track late in May. In the first race, the Mustang lost second gear and the race. In their second race, JJ took the win. They decided to run the third race anyway, and Liberman fouled while Foster got the win with a 6.14. Near the end of May, he was at Huntsville, Alabama, for a match race against Shirl Greer. In the first race, Shirl's 7.45 held off Sid's 203.77 top-end charge. In the second race, Greer broke, and Foster's 7.50/204.66 got the win. Greer could not return for the final race, so Sid soloed with a 7.42/205.87 for the match race win. - RH | Sid was the first alternate at the NHRA Springnationals (times unavailable). Columbus and Gainesville were his only two NHRA national events this year. Sidney also ran 6.18 at 1,000 feet at Humboldt IA 9/70 | Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. – RT |

Notes: Sid Foster was a Ford guy. He had always run Fords and he made a splash in Funny Car racing by driving Larry Coleman's "Super Ford" Torino. It was one of the first five FC's to top 200 mph and it was always a strong runner. In '70, he teamed with his brother Gerald on a Mustang that he ran until the end of the season before it was sold. After that, he dropped out of racing for a complete year before he returned in '72 with this Mustang. His earlier efforts all used SOHC Ford motors for power, but he knew you couldn't beat the 426 Hemi for reliable power. So, the new car used a 484 version of the Hemi. A Moldex 1/2" stroker crank got him the cubes. M/T rods held Forgedtrue pistons. The cam came from Crower. Cragar supplied both the blower drive and manifold. An Enderle injection unit sat on top of the GMC 6/71. The power got to the 4.88 rear by a Lenco two-speed. Early runs were in the 6.70s at 215. Sid missed both the AHRA and the NHRA Winternationals due to sickness, but Bobby Rowe drove the car at those events. |

Notes: Steve was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran a best of 4.959/298.01. Unfortunately, that time was good for the third alternate. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he was the second alternate at 4.95/296.73. He ran well during the season and recorded his best ET back at Pomona for the World Finals at 4.865. Photo from 1994 US Nationals. |
