Notes: Larry was at Lions on January 28 for the second half of its Winternationals. Fullerton's 9.27/138.03 qualified for the 32-car show. He lost to Ronnie Runyan in the opening round of eliminations. He was at Lions on June 29 for a double Funny Car show. There were two eight-car fields, with those that didn't qualify quick enough for the first eight fell into a second eight-car field. Fullerton failed to qualify for the quick eight and well as the second eight. He did get into the show as an alternate, but his 9.52/122.95 lost to Gene Modlin's 9.36/129. On August 3, he was at Irwindale for its Gold Cup Championships. He fouled against eventual winner Gas Ronda in the first round and shut off to 10.30-99.53. As far as I know, Fullerton ran SOHC Ford's in his cars until his Maverick switched to an early Hemi in Mid-'70. Larry ran 8.46 at Irwindale.

Notes: Larry qualified on the "bump spot" with an 8.13 at the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 16. The race was a sixteen-car show. Unfortunately, he fouled against Mike Van Sant in the first round. He attempted to qualify for an eight-car show at Lions on March 22, but failed to get in. Larry competed at another sixteen-car show at Irwindale on April 26. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.93/184.42 lost to Randy Walls' 7.88/171. He then raced at the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open at OCIR on May 3. He qualified second on the four-car Ford team with a 7.97/189.86. In his first race, an off pace 8.54/181.08 lost to Ray Alley's 8.04/193. In his second race, he ran an 8.93/191.80 that beat an ailing Ron Runyan. In his third run, an ailing 10.14/94.53 lost to Clyde Morgan's 8.67/161. The following day (May 4), he finished runner-up to Van Sant at Carlsbad for an eight-car show. At Lions on May 10, the car showed up running Norm Cowdrey's 392 Hemi where the Cammer once was. He beat Rusty Delling in the first round, with a 7.86/156.25 while a semifinal 8.00/149.75 beat the "Holy Toledo" Jeep drive by Ed Lenarth. The switch paid off as Larry won the race over Runyan with a final round 7.80/187.50 to take the title. Things went really bad for Larry on May 24 at Lions. He was there for an eight-car show where he ran 7.69 to qualify #5. He improved to 7.66/194.80 in the first round, to beat Bob Smith in Tom Sturm's Corvair. In the semifinals, his 7.77/179.28 beat Lenarth, but as his speed shows, he had troubles. The 392 blew at the top end of the track and the Mustang went up in flames. He got it stopped and he was OK, but the car was badly damaged.

Notes: The All-Ford FCs were in trouble in '70. After having an amazing season in '69 that saw the blue oval guys in a lot of victory circles, there were really only 5 or 6 truly competitive Ford powered Funny Car's running in '69, but if you considered their victories it seemed like a whole lot more. Especially with Danny Ongais' domination in the early part of the year with Mickey Thompson's Mustang. All the cars that performed well-used the 427 SOHC. The Boss 429 just didn't cut it even though Tommy Grove and Connie Kalitta tried hard to make it work. But '70 started bad. There were some expected leavers, such as Eddie Schartman and Dick Loehr going into the Pro Stock class, but then there were some unexpected ones, such as Gas Ronda's bad fire at the AHRA Winternationals that cut his career short. Then there was Mickey Thompson losing two cars to crashes and now the Ford-powered Funny Car was almost extinct. It was too bad as the SOHC made gobs of horsepower, but by '70, parts were getting harder and harder to come by. Not to mention, the Fords were much more expensive to build compared to a Mopar Hemi which in '70 was an over the counter deal. The Ford had a weaker bottom end and tear downs between rounds were a lot more time-consuming. The M/T team just switched in a new "bullet" every time they hurt one. The Fords were performing better than the Chevy-powered FCs at this time. Even at Irwindale's New Year's race, there were four Ford entries and one went on to win. But just a couple of months later, only one of those four cars were still in competition. It went on with Grove winning the AHRA Winternationals. So, the season started well. What does this have to do with Larry Fullerton? Lots, as Larry had been racing a Cammer powered Mustang. It never really rocked the world. During the '69 season, he did OK, just making the shows and sometimes lasting a few rounds. If the motor got hurt, he didn't have the budget to just drop in a "spare.” During May of that year, he dropped in Norm Cowdrey's 392 for a race at Lions. His times did not really improve much (7.80 best), but the reliability was there and he won the race. He continued to race the 392 until it blew up at Lions and turned the car into a fireball. This shelved the car until July. Once it was back together, he switched back and forth between the Hemi and the SOHC. He took a stint driving one of M/T's Mustangs early in '70. Then he had this new Maverick built. Galpin Ford was a sponsor for the car and the car appeared in magazines using the Ford motor. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to make the show. At the Bakersfield March Meet, the car showed up running a 392. He made a few test runs, but did not race it in competition. Fullerton did race it at OCIR's Big Four Championships, but the car failed to fire in the first round, against Ray Alley. Even with the Chrysler now in place of the Ford, Larry was having a tough time qualifying at the shows. He failed to qualify at Lions for the AHRA All American race, but with so many cars present, they formed another second eight to race. Unfortunately, Fullerton crossed the centerline in his first-round race and was disqualified. A week later (July 17), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #10 with an 8.35/141.28, but an opening round 8.03 lost to Leroy Hales' 7.80 in the "Wild Breed.” Larry continued to have trouble at the Irwindale Gold Cup Championships where the car died on the line in the first round, against Frank Rupert. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR. So that spelled the end for another one of the Ford powered cars. Larry wanted to run the SOHC in this car, but it was too costly and it was just too easy to put in a Hemi and just go.

Notes: This car was built over five months and cost $10,000 to build. It used a 117" wheelbase Exhibition Engineering chassis. A 4.10 Halibrand Quick change rear was used along with a Lenco two-speed transmission. Fullerton built his own 392 Hemi to power the car. It used a Howards cam and rods and Jahns pistons. A Cragar manifold supported the Larry Bowers built blower and a Hilborn injection unit sat on top. | The car’s first outing was at the Bakersfield March Meet. Early times cited for the car were 6.90s with speeds over 210 according to the November. '71 SS/FC article. After Bakersfield, Larry was at Irwindale on March 20 where he ran 7.46/170.77 before clutch problems held him back from making any more runs. Larry was at Aquasco in May for the Ford vs. Chevy Funny Car race. In the first round, his 7.65/182.92 lost to Terry Hedrick's 7.46. He soloed with an engine saving 9.68/188.28 in round two when Malcolm Durham's Camaro failed to fire. In round three, his 7.64/193.64 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.04/200. On June 27, he was at Thunder Valley for the second NHRA Division 5 race. An opening round 7.54/196.50 beat Randy Scriber, who was driving Bill Schifsky's new Pinto. Fullerton got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals, and he advanced with a 7.70/198.66. He faced David Ray driving Larry Christopherson's Vega in the final and Larry's 7.63 finished runner-up to Ray's 7.55. Larry ran a two out of three match against Paula Murphy at Marion, SD, in September 1971. He ran at 7.32 at Thunder Valley SD on 9/71. Confirmed 7.27 at Fremont 71.

Notes: Larry qualified third at the 1972 NHRA Summernationals and in the first round, ran then quickest and fastest pass in NHRA history a 6.405/228.42 that beat Tom Sneden. In the second round, he beat Sam Miller with a 6.56/225. He lost in the third round to Don Schumacher who won the event. Ran 6.575/218.97 at Indy 9/72. Ran 6.58/222.22 in winning the 1972 World Finals (and thus, the 1972 NHRA Championship). Ran 6.42/222.04 at Gainesville 12/72. This was a beautiful car with purple anodized aluminum interior. Ran one of the first Milodon aluminum motors. Fullerton ran a 6.54 at Sanair. | Every so often, a team gets a dream season. This is what Doheny and Fullerton had in '72. Their early efforts used the SOHC Ford engines before going to the early Hemi. Then when they switched to the 426 they really started to run. The addition of an Ed Pink motor had them able to set at least one end of the track record everywhere they raced from June to August. Their season got off to a slow start and I will pick them up at the Bakersfield March Meet where Fullerton lost to Gerry Glenn in the opening round. They then went to OCIR where Larry set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.78/220.04 in winning the eight-car show over Ron O'Donnell who broke a rear end in the final. Near the end of March, he picked up another win at the Race of Champions event at Fresno. The final OCIR All-Pro event featured a sixteen-car field and in round one, Larry beat Gordon Swearingen, but he lost to O'Donnell in round two. In April, they were back at OCIR for another Funny Car show, but they failed to reach the finals. They did set Top Speed again at over 220. It was late in June when they really got on a roll. On the 25 they were at Warner Robins for the National Open and while they failed to make the final, Fullerton did reset the NHRA ET record at 6.56. After qualifying #3 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.57, as noted above they ran the quickest and fastest speed in NHRA before slowing to an off-pace 7.37/212 losing pass in the semifinals. Of course, his 6.40/228.42 were Englishtown track records. The following week they were at Rockford for the Manufacturer's Meet where one again Fullerton broke both track records., the speed was 221.13. Unfortunately, he failed to make the final round. Up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, Larry qualified #1 with a 6.54 (Low ET and track record), but in round one, the rear end let go and he slowed to a 6.86 loss to Don Cain's 6.65. They returned to Englishtown for a ten car show in August where Larry's 6.69/216.34 beat Lew Arrington in the opening round and a late off the line 6.62/214.28 drove around Gary Bolger in the "Golddigger" in the semifinal. He faced one of the strongest cars of '72 in the final, Ed McCulloch's Demon. The two had a great race, but Fullerton won with a 6.57 (Low ET) at 218.44 over Ed's 6.62/219. It was then off to Salem, Ohio’s Quaker City for an eight-car show. Larry lasted until the semifinals where Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" laid a track record 6.59 on him that stopped his 6.86. They went to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals and qualified #10 with a 6.57/218.97, but lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. It looked like a sure bet that they would win over an eight-car field at Warner Robins. Larry beat Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round, with a 6.77 and he set Low ET in the semis with a 6.60/223 conquest of Roger Lindamood. But facing O'Donnell in the final, the car's transmission got stuck. Ron shut his car down to give Doheny and Fullerton time to get it fixed, but it didn't happen. O’Donnell was awarded the victory. He won the NHRA World Finals at Amarillo, but with the high elevation the times were nothing special. An opening round 6.91/183 beat Robbie Williams and in round two his 6.64 beat Paul Radici. In the semifinals, Larry’s 6.82 took out Preston Davis and moved him into the final against Jake Johnston who had earlier set Low ET at 6.51 in Gene Snow's Charger. Fullerton saved his best for last and his 6.58/222.32 got him the victory over Jake's 6.69/216. The traction was horrible at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet and Larry failed to qualify for the eight-car Ford team even though the "bump" was just a 7.39. He was actually the second alternate for the team. The team was expecting big numbers at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals, but while everyone else stepped up, their times remained the same and Larry only qualified #7. In the first round, he lost a blower belt while doing his burnout allowing Bobby Rowe a single into round two. It was weirder still when the team failed to qualify for the Miami National Open's eight-car show in December. They rebounded nicely the following week at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot race. Fullerton qualified #1 with a 6.68 and then improved to 6.64 in the first round, over Shirl Greer. In the semifinals, a 6.75 stopped Cliff Brown and in the final, he really picked it up to a 6.42/222.04 to stop Paul Smith's 6.60/216 in the "Fireball Vega." That was by far the best season this team had.

Notes: 1972 World Champ and briefly had the quickest Funny Car ET of all time as well. Coming off an outstanding season, Fullerton hoped to have even more success in '73. Fullerton qualified #6 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.58/216.86. An opening round 6.58/217.91 beat Jim Nicoll's 6.77/221, but an off-pace 6.96/205.01 lost to Dave Condit's 6.57/216 in the "LA Hooker." Larry had one of 58 cars that attempted to qualify at Pomona for the sixteen-car field at the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best was good for the eighth alternate. On April 29, he was at Atco for its Funny Car Factory Showdown race. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.66/200.89 lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.50/223. He came back out later for a consolation race against Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max," but the "Trojan Horse" lost fire on the line. At the Warner Robins National Open in May, he and Harry Hudson had a tire-smoking dual in round one, that saw Larry's 7.71 come out on top over Harry's 7.86. But in the semifinals, the "Trojan Horse" broke on the line against eventual winner Tom Crevasse in the "Fireball Vega." New England held its Spring Funny Car Championships early in June. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round, Larry's late 6.70 lost to Paul Radici's 6.75. He was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where a first-round 6.62 beat Paul Smith in the "Sir Wells" Charger. He beat Pat Foster in round two before losing a blower belt in the semifinals against eventual winner Bill Leavitt. From there, he went to New England for its fourth Funny Car Tourney event. He set Low ET with a 6.44, but his parachute fell out on the line in the first round, and he watched as his opponent, Foster, soloed into round two. His next stop was at Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships. This was another sixteen-car show. Everything went well for the "Trojan Horse" this day, right up until Larry got the "win" light in the final. He started eliminations by running 6.78/170.45 to beat the "Damn Yankee." In round two, he improved to 6.57/216.34 to defeat Dean Lapole's 6.94/204 in the Chevy-powered "King Camaro." His ETs continued to fall in the semifinal, where his 6.54/203.61 advanced when Pete Hill shut down. He faced Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car in the final. Larry got out on Prock, and his 6.51/221.67 held for the win over Prock's track records of 6.45/223. Then things went wrong. The Mustang exploded into a ball of flames just past the finish line. Larry was ok, but the car had seen better days. Fullerton got the car repaired and was at Englishtown on July 4 for its Funny Car Spectacular race. A 6.78/178.57 beat Fred Goeske in round one. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. On July 25, he was at Maple Grove for the All-American race, but an off-pace 7.34/162.16 in the opening round lost to Al Hanna's 6.86/199 in the "Eastern Raider."

Notes: Fullerton was one of the first to run the Mustang II body in the Funny Car competition. He had it running in late March for the IHRA Southern Nationals. Larry qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the first round. He did better at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race in April. He reached the final by running 7.54/134.76 in the first round, and in the semifinals, he soloed to a shut-off when Paul Smith had problems in the "Fireball Vega" and lost fire on the line. In the final, he faced Harry Hudson. Once again, he had traction problems, and the "Trojan Horse's" 7.65/121.60 lost to Hudson's 6.61/206. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he lost early. Larry then went out and won the Lebanon Valley Funny Car race in May. A 6.61 in the first round, beat Bobby Lagana's 6.79, while a semifinal 6.57 stopped Al Hanna's 6.95 in the "Eastern Raider.” In the final, he was supposed to face Kosty Ivanof, but Kosty had blown his engine while winning his semifinal race. Larry could solo for the victory, but Joe Jacono offered to run in the final against him just for the show. Joe outran Larry in the final with a 6.84/209 to Fullerton's 6.96/212, but Larry still got the victory. On June 9th, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.61/200.89 qualified #8. The car came to the line ailing in the first round, and lost to John Schumacher. He had a bad outing on July 3 at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular Race. Larry had fouled in the first round, against Tommy Grove driving the Barry Setzer car. He later came back out for a consolation race against Bill Leavitt. Something let go at the top end of the track, and the Mustang went up in flames. Fullerton got it stopped, and he was OK, but the car was burnt pretty bad. It didn't take long to return to running as he was back at Englishtown on July 14 for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.71 qualified #15, and in the first round, he clicked it off against Billy Meyer when he got out of shape. He was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where he once again had problems in the first round, and shut off. This time his 10.00 lost to Leavitt's 6.93.

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. | Larry wasn't running nearly as well in '75 as he had in previous years. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. Fullerton did run well at a best of three match race against Tom McEwen in May. It was an 1/8 mile track and Larry won all three of the races with runs of 4.25, 4.65, and a solo 5.06 when McEwen broke. Shortly after that, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. An opening round 7.67 advanced when Jackie Price's Vega broke on the line, but he failed to fire for his round two match against Jim Nicoll. Larry was at Connecticut for the Memorial Day Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show with all the cars making three runs. A crossed-up 8.38 in his first race lost to Jimmy King's 6.76. In the second race, Fullerton’s 7.12/209.79 lost to Don Johnson's new Monza at 6.98/194. In the last race, Harlan Thompson's "Fireball Vega" broke so Larry was to get a solo run. After losing two races this was an easy win, but no such luck. Larry blew the engine on his 7.07 single. It was not a good weekend. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. His next stop as at Tri City for the seventh annual Manufacturer's Championships. It was an eight-car show with all cars making three passes. Ron O'Donnell's 6.83/204 beat his 6.99/181.08 in his first race. Larry got a win in his second race with a 7.00/184.42 beating a tire-smoking Norm Wilcox in the "Hawaiian,” and in his third race, he beat a crossed-up Tom Hoover with a 6.96/198.67. As shown by his numbers, the "Trojan Horse" was falling behind the competition. In the middle of June, he was at Byron for their Manufacturer's Meet. Twelve cars ran the first-round with the lowest eight ET's going into round two. Larry won his opening round race with a 7.19/198 when Kenny Safford crossed the centerline in the "Mr. Norm" car, but his ET failed to advance him into round two. This once feared car was not feared by many anymore, and it got worse. In July Fullerton was up in Canada at Cayuga Dragway for the Gold Cup Championships. The format was 14 cars making three runs with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Fullerton won his first two races with a 6.96/156.52 over Al Segrini who shut off and his 6.86/172.74 beat Pee Wee Wallace in round two, but the car broke and was unable to run the third race. The Mustang II came to an end at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals during Friday's qualifying. The car went to a huge fireball that totaled the body and did major damage to the chassis and running gear. Luckily, Larry received only minor burns. He was out of commission for a while, but he was back in the saddle at Maryland International on August 16 with his old '73 Mustang for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He finished runner-up to Don Prudhomme there. He competed at New England Dragway for the Epping Grand Am, but he lost to eventual winner Al Segrini in the first round. Near the end of the season, Larry was runner-up to Ron Jackson at the Suffolk Little Guy Open and he got a win over Tom Anderson at the Southeast National Open at Warner Robins.

Notes: Larry wasn't running as he had in the past, but '76 was an improvement over '75. He qualified #12 for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.53/219.51, but he lost in the first round, to Topper Kramer. It was the first NHRA national field he qualified for since 1974. Larry then went to the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace Dragway, where he set Top Speed at 209.30 before smoking the tires in the final and losing to Johnny White. It was then off to Warner Robins for the NHRA Division 2 Opener. He qualified #4 with a not-so-hot 7.37/186.33. There were only seven cars present, so qualifying wasn't really an issue. Fullerton set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.56/211.76 that beat George Johnson. But in the semifinals, he had a really close race going against Tom Prock before his 'chute fell out and slowed him to a 7.37/122.61 loss. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lasted until round two. His 6.86/174.08 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max," who beat him with a 6.38/222. At the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto, he qualified with a pro stock like 9.08. But in round one, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.55/220.04 before losing in the semifinals with a troubled 7.13/146.10. Larry traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga only to have his transmission break in the first round, against Ron Jackson.

Notes: Larry qualified #1 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.35. A 6.42 in the first round beat Shirl Greer's 6.63, while a 6.45/206.42 beat Donny Plunkett's Chevy-powered car in round two. He slowed to a 6.61 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Billy Graham's 6.89 in the "Million Dollar Baby" Monza. In the final, the Mustang II broke on the line giving Dale Pulde a solo for the win. He had more problems at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove in early July. Fullerton qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and a troubled 8.23/152.02 beat an equally troubled Pulde in the first round, but the "Trojan Horse" broke in the semifinals, giving Jerry Boldenow a free ride into the final. Larry was the 11th qualifier at NHRA Englishtown at 6.340/220.58. He shut off in round one after smoking the tires against Gary Burgin. Shortly after that (July 24), he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Early in August, Larry was at Atlanta International for the IHRA Nationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #12. He lost to eventual winner Dale Emery in the opening round. That was Larry's only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: In 1972, this was the car to beat anywhere as Larry Fullerton set track records wherever he ran. But as the seventies progressed, the car's performance waned. By '78, Fullerton had a rough time making the car run numbers similar to '72, and breakage took its toll. Larry was at Rockingham on April 30 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #6 with a 7.07/155. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire for his first-round race against Les Cassidy. In May, he was at Blaney for a four-car match. Dale Pulde won the match. Fullerton ran a best of 6.99 there. Shortly after that, he was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. He qualified #7 but lost early in eliminations. He competed at Union Grove for the three-day Olympics of Drag Racing. All cars in attendance ran the first round, with the four Low ET cars moving into the semifinal. On both Saturday and Sunday, eighteen cars were competing. Fullerton did not run quick enough to advance to the semifinal. The field swelled to twenty-four on Monday (May 29), but Larry still didn't make the final four. In June, a 6.61/206.42 qualified #8 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. But he broke against Mike Miller in the first round. A couple of days later (June 21), he was at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. All cars there made two runs. In Larry's first race, his 6.86/205.94 lost to Pete Williams' 6.18/212 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In his second race, a 7.07 lost to Cassidy's 6.33. On July 9, Fullerton was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. An opening round 6.75 beat Pulde's quicker 6.72, and he shut down to a 12.14 that still advanced when Tom Anderson got out of shape. He went up against Paul Radici in the final, but Fullerton's bad luck continued as the car broke, giving Radici a solo for the win. Larry then went to Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he ran 6.52 to qualify #7. In the first round, his 6.69/211.76 lost to Anderson's 6.25/227. Larry did not run at any NHRA events in 1978.

Notes: Fullerton had a bad weekend at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. During qualifying, the car went up in flames on a 6.44 pass. That qualified him in the #15 spot. The car was too badly burnt up to compete, so the first alternate, John Force, took his place in the field. He was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 race, where his off-pace 7.10/152 lost to George Johnson's 6.44/215 in the opening round. Larry competed at New England in August for the NHRA Division 1 final. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 6.57/195.22 beat Al Hanna's similar 6.57/208 in the "Eastern Raider." He had trouble in the semifinal and shut down to 8.84 in losing to eventual winner Al Bergler's 6.30/220. Gainesville was Larry's only NHRA national event of 1979.

In their first race, the Camaro's 7.98/168 beat the 'Cuda's close 8.01/176.89. "Lime Fire" broke on the line in the second race, and Perry ran 7.77/180 to win the match race.
