Notes: Also turned an 8.19/187.10 at the March Meet at Bakersfield. Gary was at Lions on April 25. There were so many cars that the track ran two eight-car shows. Gabelich's 8.45/185.94 didn't qualify for the first eight, but it was good enough for the #2 spot in the second eight-car field. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, against Don Hampton and shut off on the line. On May 17, he was back at Lions for the UDRA Fuel Meet. He qualified with an 8.14, but lost early. Another trip to Lions on May 30 saw Gary qualify #7 with an 8.40/185.56, but he lost fire in the first round, advancing Bob Noice. -- RH | Contemporary news reports indicate the Sandoval Bros. ran two cars in '64 -- this one with team member Madden and a new Sandoval Bros. car called "Scoundrel" that debuted in mid-December. Gabelich drove both, along with multiple stints at the wheel of the "Valkyrie" jet dragster. -- RT |

Notes: It appears the Sandoval Bros. split with teammember Madden at mid-year; news articles indicate they debuted a new rail -- "Scoundrel" -- in mid-December. Gary Gabelich drove this car as well, between frequent stints piloting the "Valkyrie" jet dragster. Times cited from Dec. 12 shakedown runs. -- RT |

Notes: This car had an interesting story. It had sat in the rafters at Woody Gilmore's Race Car Engineering shop. The dusty chassis had been up there for a while when Ronnie Rapp visited the shop. He was just looking around and noticed the frame in the rafters. He asked about it and found out that it was Pete Ogden's car, but when Pete decided to do away with racing, it ended up there. Once Rapp knew the car was available, he called Chayo Maldonado and Vince Rossi to come to have a look. They all crawled into the rafters to have a look at the 155" chassis. A deal was struck, and the team went about finishing the car. It took six weeks from the time they brought it home to having it running at the track. Dick Dean did the tail section while Doug Kruse did the nose. Tony Nancy stitched up the upholstery. The chassis was originally built by RCE. It used an Olds rear end with 3.42 gears. The team ran a 392 Hemi that was bored out to 398. The stock crank was polished and micro-finished by Reath. M/T rods and pistons were used. Neil Leffler reworked the GMC 6/71 blower, which sat on an Edelbrock manifold. Up top sat an Enderle injection unit. There was no transmission, as it used an RCS direct-drive set-up. The car weight was 1,320 lbs. The best times according to the March '67 Drag Racing USA issue was 7.32/214.70. | The first-ever run was a 9.00/117 at Lions. At the Bakersfield March Meet, the team went two rounds before losing the motor against Jimmy Nix in round three. Gary was at Lions for an eight-car show on April 30. He qualified #4 with an 8.08/199.10, and he advanced past round one with an 8.27/145.39. In the semifinals, his 8.01/191.08 beat Don Cook's 8.17/160. This put him into the final against James Warren and the “Warren-Coburn" car. Gabelich didn't have any fuel to make the final, so Roger Coburn stepped up and offered some. It must have been good fuel since Gary ran his first 200 mph run with a 7.76/204.54 that beat Warren's late 7.59/205. Gabelich was at Lions on July 2 for an eight-car show. He qualified #6, and in the first round, his opponent, Don Hampton, lost fire. Gary ran 10.44 to advance. In the semifinals, his 7.81/161.29 beat Jack Ewell's 8.01/203. He faced Dave Beebe in the final, and few were beating Dave at either Lions or Irwindale at this period. Sure enough, Dave's 7.69/199 got the victory over Gary's ailing 8.47/144.92. | Also confirmed 7.35/213.28 at Lions 1966. |

Notes: Bill, I am trying to find a copy of Drag Digest featuring My Top Fuel car at Long Beach on the front cover. Gary Gabelich was at the wheel; on his first pass in my car (a driver qualification pass), he turned a 7.05 ET; the strip record was 6.99 ET at the time. I don't know who took the photo. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated. Thanks, Terry Gall | I was Terry Gall's partner in this Gabelich-piloted endeavor. Indeed, the George Cerny Candy Yellow Striped cowl was tagged "Gall & Laswell." And Terry might be right about the Lions track ET record being 6.99, but I remember it differently as we were trying to back up the 7.05 when the supercharger inhaled an injector bolt. In other words, "Why try to back up a 7.05 when it would have been insignificant?" Moreover, I also remember being the "second quickest" Top Fuel car in discussion with Ronnie Rapp, who I worked with at Ansen. Of course, Gabelich once drove the Purple Gang car owned by Rapp, Rossi, and Maldonado. Maybe also of interest is that Gene Creitz walked up to us while we were in "The Beach" pits, saying he heard us warming up when he was at the starting line. Saying it was the "Strongest" Fuel Chrysler he had ever heard, he walked back to find out whose car it was. Usually pitting next to Popcorn Pam's Hot Dog trailer that was some 200 or so yards away. Sincerely, Teddy Laswell | Update 4/14 — There was no mistaking a "Woody Car" as the two bottom frame rails began to twist and curl just behind the rear-end upright, "Swooping" upward and terminating at the 180-degree bend of the top frame rail some 6"-8" apart. There were no other car builders in that era who approximated that design. Indeed, I think some tall drivers, like Paul Sutherland, could see over the Blower (I'll call him and ask him about that). Sitting somewhat higher, enough to be significantly noticeable from an outsider's viewpoint, seeing over the Blower was an advantage, especially at night. Trying to see between a "Wall of fire" from the headers and the Blower, coupled with the "Normal" vibration, trying to see the car in the opposite lane was near impossible. Sincerely, Teddy Laswell |

Notes: Gary qualified #15 for Bakersfield's 32-car show with a 7.31. He lasted until round two, where his 7.46/203 lost to Gerry Glenn's 7.33/180. Shortly after that, he went to Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open. Something weird must have transpired in the first round because his 7.43 beat Don Prudhomme's much quicker 7.25 in Lou Baney's Ford. He fouled against James Warren in round two. Qualified at Fresno on April 2 with a 7.67/210.28, but a rod let go on the line in his first-round race. |

Notes: Gabelich was one of 19 cars at Lions on May 24, trying to qualify for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he failed to make the field. Gary set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.81/195.65 on June 14 at OCIR for the Benefit Race. In an all-Corvette final, he lost to Johnny Wright with Gary's 7.85/190.67 losing to Wright's 8.01/188.28. On June 21 at Lions for the AHRA Grand American Championships, Gary lost to another Corvette, this time in the semifinal where Mike Van Sant dropped him with a 7.41/195 to his 8.14/181. Another runner-up finish followed with Gabelich running a 7.51/184.80 best on June 28 at Lions before losing in the final to Bob Smith's 7.61/182 in Tom Storm's Corvair. Gary was close with a 7.87/177 in the final. A 7.56 qualified him second on July 5 at OCIR's Nitro Championships, and he made it to the semifinals before smoking his tires against Larry Fullerton. Gary lost in the first round, again to Bob Smith at Irwindale's Race with a Reason on July 12. A red light in the semifinals ended his chances for a win at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19. And the semifinal finishes continued on August 2 at Lions, where Gordon Mineo got him. Gary got Mineo back at OCIR on August 9 when Mineo fouled to Gary's 7.64/182.92 in round one; again, a semifinal finish resulted. Only this time, Gary brushed the guardrail while losing to Dave Beebe. Then the dreaded Corvette curse hit the team on August 16 at Irwindale. After running a 7.65/198.66 in round one, Gary advanced into the final against Frank Pisano's Corvair. In the final, the car caught fire, and Gary jumped out while the car was still rolling down the track. He received one slight burn on his left leg, but the car burned to the ground. |
