Notes: Possibly the baddest BB/FC in history. Armstrong became the first to break the 6.7, 6.6, and 6.5-second barriers in 1975. Set Low ET of 6.56 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship in November 1975. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Notes: Armstrong's new Satellite appeared without paint at the IHRA World Nationals in the first week of May. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.92/205.82 beat Ed Renck's 7.30/157. Another 6.92/205.82 in the semifinal advanced when Wilfred Boutilier broke. He faced Dave Settles in the final, and Dale ran his third 6.92 (at 202.19) to win over Settles' 7.01. The following week, he took it to Sacramento, where he beat Lou Gasparelli in the final and set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.57/213. Dale qualified #1 at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals with a 6.77 (Low ET). He then ran 6.83/204.54 to beat Jeg Coughlin's 7.03/196 in the first round, followed by a 6.81 over Settles, who lost an engine in round two. A strong 6.79/205.47 beat Ken Veney's 6.99/203 in the semifinals. This moved him into the final against Boutilier. The two had a close race, but Armstrong's 6.83/204.08 got the victory over Boutilier's 6.86/203. After an easy first-round win, he ran a second round 6.98 to advance to the semifinals where he broke against Richard Ogg. Confirmed 6.47/212 Fremont by 1977. Won 1977 IHRA Winternationals and Dixie Nationals. We need to confirm that was in the dragster or the funny car. 6.58 OCIR 209.30 Fremont National Records. Notes: Dale debuted a unique alcohol/nitrous oxide combination in his Satellite on January 1 at Sacramento. The car used nitrous as well as a small percentage of nitro. He was there for a best-of-three-match race against Tommy Ivo. Armstrong lost all three races, recording a best of 6.72/206 compared to Ivo, who ran a best of 6.22/214 in winning the match. Dale ran 6.50/214.79 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. Confirmed 6.48 per Bret Kepner. | In a December '77 Drag News interview, AA/Dale drew a picture of how part of the problem was that the injector nozzles were pointed directly at each other. Notes: Dale didn't run at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, but he was at the NHRA Gatornationals in mid-March. He qualified #5 with a 6.06/233.76, but he shut off when the car went into a wheelstand in the first round. His 6.94/149.00 lost to Al Segrini, who had his own problems at 6.40/223. In April, he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 Opener. He qualified #3 with a 6.49/218.97 and went on to win. In the first round, he ran 6.41/197.80 over Dominic Santucci's 6.92/170. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the semi-final at 6.25/231.36 while defeating Tim Grose's 6.74/195. In the final, his 6.30/226.13 got the victory over Murf McKinney's 7.21. Near the end of April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was a tough eight-car field, and drivers such as Raymond Beadle, Don Prudhomme, and Dale Pulde failed to make it. Dale did, however, run 6.16/234.98 for the #7 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, running a 6.30/218.34 best that was good for the third alternate. He didn't run at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 6.05/232. He ran his best NHRA national event times of the year with a 6.049/238.72 defeat of Tom McEwen but lost the second round to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." The following week (July 20), Dale was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he qualified #6. He lost to Dick Rosberg in the first round. In August, he won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Armstrong set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.20/231.95 to beat future employer Kenny Bernstein. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He ran 6.20/233.76 to qualify #2. In round one, he picked up to a 6.10 (Low ET) at 236.22 to beat a tire-smoking Al Segrini. In the semifinals, his 6.15 beat John Force, who also smoked the tires. In the final, he faced off against Pulde. This time, the "Speed Racer" smoked the tires, Armstrong shut off, and Pulde got the victory with a 6.16/237. He got another win on August 17 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.08. He beat Paul Smith in the "Sting" in the first round, with a 6.21/227.84, and he ran an easy single in the semifinals to go into the final against Billy Meyer. The two had a good race, but Dale's 6.16/236.84 got the win over Meyer's close 6.20/238. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #14 with a 6.10/234.98. In the first round, an off pace 6.39/220.58 lost to Meyer's 6.13/229. The following week (September 7), he was at Jackson County Sports Park in Medford for the NHRA Division race there. Dale qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/221.13. He ran 6.54/216.86 to beat Gary Lewis in the first round, but in the semifinals, his 6.38/218.97 lost to eventual winner Beadle's 6.09/235. Mike Kase owner; wrecked Challenger bodied car. Notes: Dale lost an engine during qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The resulting fire burned up the car. But rain postponed the race a week, and Dale had time to repair it for eliminations. Lost this body in a fire at Columbus race. Qualified it #13 at 6.253/229.59 and lost in round one, to Kenny Bernstein, 6.18/238.72 to 6.238/226.70. Not sure when the fire occurred. on the first-round loss? Dale ran 6.175 for the first alternate at Atlanta. Was that in the Challenger or the Omni? (The Omni ran at Gainesville). |

Notes: Dale failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was one of 45 funny cars to try to qualify. Armstrong ran really well at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #2 with a 6.251/236.22. A first-round 6.27/231.95 beat Dave Condit's 6.45/228. In round two, a consistent 6.25 beat Gary Densham, who shut off, and in the semifinals, he improved to a 6.17/242.58 (Top Speed) over Craig Epperly, who broke. In the final, he lost to Dale Pulde, but it was still a strong showing. From there, he went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran his first-ever "five," a 5.981/241.93, to qualify #4 and to become the sixth member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. A first-round 6.047/234.37 took out John Force, but he hurt some parts and could not show for his second-round match against Pulde. Dale was the first alternate at NHRA Atlanta with a 6.175 (speed not reported). In May, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Eastern Regional, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did get Top Speed with a 234.99. On June 21, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.253/229.59 qualified #13 in the field. He lost to future employer Kenny Bernstein in the first round, 6.18/238 to 6.238/226.70. He made it into the final at the next NHRA race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.995/231.95. In the first round, opponent Rick Johnson broke, and Dale ran an easy 6.235/209.78 to advance. In round two, a 6.148/229.59 beat Fuzz Miller's 6.32/224. In the semifinal, a 6.180/231.36 beat a tire-smoking Mike Dunn. In the final, he had lane choice over Don Prudhomme, but Armstrong blew an engine, and his 7.082/125.52 finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.07/241. At the NHRA Grandnationals in August, Dale qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.059/236.22. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round, and Armstrong advanced with a 6.256/231.36. He lost to Dom Prudhomme in the semifinals, 6.33/227 to a 10-second shutoff. Dale qualified #5 with a 6.22 in the eight-car show at the PHR Championships. He beat a fouling Mike Dunn with a 6.08/231.36 and Tom Hoover in the semis with a 6.19/225.56. So again, Bernstein and Armstrong ran against one another, this time in the final. Unfortunately, Dale hurt his engine in his semifinal win and could not run, so Kenny soloed for the win. Dale was the third alternate at Indy with a 6.124/232.88. He qualified #15 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals at 6.134/233.16 but shut off against Craig Epperly in round one. He had an excellent World Finals performance, however. Dale qualified #1 at 5.939/238.72. In found one, he ran 5.937/230.17 to be Al Segrini's 9.94 shutoff. He set Low ET of the Meet in round two with a 5.891/235.60 over Raymond Beadle, who shut off to a 12.31. Gary Burgin ended Dale's day in the semis with a 6.05/234 when Dale broke. The 5.891 was one of the first 5.80 passes in the sport and garnered plenty of notoriety. |

Mert got out of shape and crossed the centerline in front of Armstrong. Dale shut down to 11.01.
