Notes: At the NHRA Gatornationals, John qualified #12 with a 6.79/206.61, but he lost to Vern Moats in the first round. He was at Cayuga for the NHRA Division 1 race on May 19, where only four alcohol FCs showed. He ran 7.53/171.75 to qualify #4 and a first-round 7.20/197.58 lost to Carol "Bunny" Burkett's 6.95/205. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 7.37/199.91 best was the third alternate for the eight-car field. On August 2, John was in New England for the NHRA Division 1 final. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.83/200.44. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round, giving his opponent, John Samolyk, a solo into the semifinals.

Notes: Arnett built a crude modified roadster that he raced under the Bean Bandits name in 1952. The body was made out of old car hoods, and the frame was made out of water pipes. He raced in Class D Roadster, competing against the likes of Art Chrisman, Melvin Dodd, Calvin Rice, Fritz Voigt, Ollie Morris, Beryl Wilson, Don Hartman, Ralph Lynde, Bill Sanders, and Otto Ryssman. At Santa Ana on Jan. 20, he won a trophy in the D/R class. He raced it at Pomona in April with the help of fellow Bandits Carlos Ramirez and Mike Magem. Magem drove it at that Pomona race, clocking the meet's top speed for the day at 118 mph. At Santa Ana on June 8, he took a win in D/R with 116.30 mph. At Paradise Mesa on Aug. 17, they turned the fastest time of the day with 123 mph. On Oct. 19 at Paradise Mesa, Arnett garnered the fastest eliminator trophy with 116.73 mph. On Nov. 16, they turned the meet's top time at Santa Ana and garnered the D/R win with 123.45 mph. Notes: Had wire wheels, mag rear wheels, ran 134. The car was originally built with a 1926 T roadster body by Paul Schiefer; the body was switched to a 1927 T roadster with a cut cowl, custom hood and pan, and nose probably made by Eddie Kuzma. In first '27 T configuration, ran 59AB Merc motor with 3-spd top loader, Ford banjo with frontend quick-change, Chrysler wavy axle, '32 wires in rear and '35 wires in front, Pounden mag; fuel was pure alcohol. Later on, Pounden was replaced with Eddie Meyer mag, and front wires were replaced with motorcycle wires; rear wires were replaced with 18-inch Halibrand Indy knockoff mags. The first car to use motorcycle wires on the dry lakes and dragstrips. On April 24, the "Bean Bandits" ran one of the most outstanding speeds of the year at 142.95. Notes: At Paradise Mesa on Jan. 31, the dragster took the Class B with 134.81 mph. On Feb. 7 at Pomona, a week later, they won the dragster class with 141.75 mph. At the 2-day meet at Pomona on July 4/5, they turned a best of 137.19 mph. They towed back to Lawrenceville, Illinois, for the ATAA World Series of Drag Racing. They got the third-fastest time with 127.66 mph on Oct. 3. Carlos Ramirez shared driving duties with Arnett. Notes: At the NHRA Southern California regional championships at Colton on Nov. 25, Arnett drove the bright yellow rear-engined Bean Bandits roadster to a new national mark for A/MR on fuel of 148.02 mph. His first run to take the class win had been a slower 145.16 mph, but it was enough in back-to-back runs to establish the quicker speed as a new national record. After the conclusion of the Top Eliminator finals, he brought the car out for a last single pass-and it was a good one. He clocked 150.75 mph. The following week the Bandits took the fuel roadster and their Chrysler dragster to Lions on Dec. 2. Notes: The Bean Bandits fielded two really fast cars in 1956. One was a very fast roadster, and the other was this A/FD. Both of them appeared on Southern California drag strips about mid-year. One of the first outings of this fuel dragster was at Paradise Mesa on May 6, where it got Top Eliminator and clocked 131.52 mph. With that promising start, they towed it to Minter Field Air Base, north of Bakersfield, for a 2-day event on May 12/13 at what was called the California National Championships. It was the first-night drag race held in California. They ran 129.03 mph but were beaten in the second round of eliminations by Aubry Hilton. On July 15, they tried out an Ardun-Merc motor for the first time at Paradise Mesa in the dragster. Carlos Ramirez drove the car to a Top Eliminator victory, beating Ted Cyr with a 135.95 mph clocking. They won A/FD class at Paradise Mesa again at a 2-day event on Aug. 4/5 with the Ardun-Merc motor at 137.95 mph. The Ardun-Merc experiment was short-lived. They put the Chrysler motor, with an eight-carb set-up, back in for the race at Paradise Mesa on Sep. 23. They turned 142.18 mph for a new A/FD track record. Their fastest time came at the end of the year at Lions, with Andrew Ortega doing the driving. Notes: Arnew was at Dover Dragstrip in April for an NHRA Pro Stock circuit race. In the first round, his 10.33/132.00 beat Ken Montgomery's 10.67/133. Unfortunately, he ran against Bob Banning Jr. in the semifinals and missed a shift, advancing Banning into the final. Jack was at Capitol Raceway on June 27 for another NHRA Pro Stock circuit race. It was an eight-car show, and his 10.28/135.73 beat Clarence McNeal in the opening round. In the semifinals, he took on the always-tough Ed Miller. Arnew won with a 10.19/135.36 over Ed's slightly better 10.18/135. This moved Jack into the final against Bill Blanding in the "Mimi" Camaro. The two had a good race, but Jack was sharp on the tree, and his 10.23/136.80 got the victory over Bill's 10.16/136. In early August, he reset the A/MP record to 10.33 at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove with this car. He also won the NHRA Pro Stock Circuit Race held at Maple Grove on September 5. In the final, he got off the line really well, and his 10.34/131.96 held on to win over Rick Holladay's much better 10.19/134. Also ran 10.19 at Jackson, SC, and 10.24 at Maple Grove.
