Notes: In March, he took Swamp Rat I to Arizona and California, doing well in the former but not performing so well in California. Returning to Florida in April, he stunned the drag racing world with a world record clocking at Brooksville. On June 14, he clocked 8.48 at 182.56 mph at the Southwestern Drag News Invitational at the Freeway Drag Strip in Houston on June 14. A week later, he suffered the fateful engine explosion at Chester, South Carolina, which landed him in the hospital for weeks with second-degree burns to his hands and face. In a hospital interview, he said he would retire from drag racing. "I'm through with drag racing," he said. "I'll never race again." He sold one of his engines but kept the dragster and got Art Malone to drive it for him for the rest of the season. Photo: Lansing State Journal, June 21, 1959 - MB |

Notes: Both Garlits and Carl Schiefer are listed at 7.50/219.50 in this car. We need to confirm which one ran these numbers and obtain the best times for the other. (7.60/214.28 at Ubly MI -mg) Won March Meet (7.63) with Marvin Schwartz Runner-up in a second Garlits car. Collided with Ronnie Goodsell at Cecil Co (blower explosion & oil bath) and quit driving for a time, naming Carl Schiefer the driver going forward, this on the same weekend Tex Randall and Lou Cangelose were killed in crashes. |

Notes: Garlits qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.70, but he lost early in eliminations. Of course, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. On Saturday, March 5, 64 cars were competing. Garlits ran an opening round 7.70/200.88 over Dave McKenzie's 7.87/191. But in the next round, he fouled away a 7.75/174.75, advancing Jack Ewell. The next day (March 6), they did it again, only this time it was a 32-car field. Unfortunately, Don's off pace 8.13/190.66 lost to Roy Thode's 7.69/196 in the first round. He had a best-of-three-match race against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's SOHC Ford-powered car at Island Dragway. Don won the first race, hitting 195 over a crossed-up Robinson, but in the next race, he fouled. In the deciding race, Pete's 8.00 won the match. On March 20, Half Moon Bay held a six-car show. Garlits' 7.89 qualified #2 behind Don "the Snake" Prudhomme's 7.78. Garlits improved to 7.75/205.34 in his first-round win over Tommy Ivo's 7.99/204, but in the semifinals, he lost an engine while running 7.77 over John Edmunds' 7.85. Garlits could not repair for the final, and Edmunds was reinstated on the "break rule." On April 10, another match race was run at Cecil County. This time he faced Prudhomme. It was not Garlits' day as first he fouled, and then he lost with a 7.78/189.86, to lose two straight. |

Notes: With Marrone (sp?) This was the famous Indy 1967 race where Garlits shaved his beard on the starting line after finally hitting the sixes on new M&H tires loaned by James Warren, who he defeated in the final. Also 6.77/220.58 this year. | Garlits ran 7.70/209 at Salt Lake City on 5/07/67 defeating Dan Noorda in a match race with 4200 in attendance - Utah Drag Racing History |

Notes: On 7/13/68, Garlits was first to run 240 mph in Alton, Illinois, but the run was widely disputed. We are not listing it as an official time. A 6.87/219.50 at the Springnationals was half of the quickest and fastest side-by-side race at the time (with Mike Snively at 7.10/221.66). Confirmed 6.894/226.70 at Indy 9/68. | Garlits faced Don Prudhomme for a best of three match race at Carlsbad on January 14. The "Snake" got out on him on their first run, and Garlits broke an aluminum rod, and it went through the oil pan. The left cylinder head was also damaged on the run. He had run 6.95/209 but lost to Prudhomme's 7.01/223. Garlits was done for the day. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 7.20/219.50 qualified #23 for the 32-car field. He beat Jack Ewell in the first round, with a 7.31/189.06, and in round two, a 7.12/217.90 stopped Tommy Ivo. Unfortunately, his 7.25/212.26 in the third round lost to eventual winner James Warren's 7.03/221. Garlits was running well at OCIR for the PDA Championships on March 3. It was a 64-car field, and in the fourth round, Don's 6.86 beat Chuck Kurzawa's 7.08 in the "Ramchargers" car. He had an easy run in the semifinals when Marvin Schwartz was unable to show. This put Garlits into the final against Vic Brown driving the "Creitz and Greer" car. Vic was also running well, hitting 6.80 in his semifinal win, so Don pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled, giving Brown the victory. He did not compete at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. |

Notes: AKA Wynnscharger. Qualified at Bakersfield 69 with a 7.08. Ran 6.632/222.69 at NHRA Indianapolis Nats 69. | Don ran a (disputed) 240 at Alton Dragway in Illinois. We are not going to list that time officially. Other than the 240, we need to confirm Don's best speed for 1969. |

Notes: Garlits drove this car as well as his own at the 1969 Olympics of Drag Racing at Union Grove, says a 6/2/69 Milwaukee Sentinel article. - RT | Dick Smothers sponsored this car, but I left him in the owners' box although it was Jim Busby's car, and he was the crew chief (Dick was funny but tuning a nitro hemi was not his forte). |

Notes: With Connie Swingle & T.C. Lemons. The clutch exploded and severed Don's foot on March 8th, 1970, during the final round of the second race in the 1970 AHRA Grand American Series at Lions Drag Strip in Long Beach, California. Don recovered, then built his revolutionary rear-engine dragster for the 1971 season. Ran 6.57 on 3/08/70 at the same Lions event, which was the new AHRA record. Low qualifier at Gainesville 2/70 at 6.551 and Low ET the next day at 6.509. |

Notes: Don was having trouble getting the new rear-engine car to go straight. Before he figured that out (slow down the steering), he built this slingshot to race for the 1971 season. His wife Pat saw it in his garage and told him to "Get your guys together and make that rear-engine car work." They did, and the rest is history. Don provided this car to Goodyear to use as a promotional display. He loaded up both cars in a small trailer and headed west. Upon arriving in California, he opened the door a crack with a number of his fellow racers in attendance. They caught a peek at the slingshot, and all began laughing, sure that Garlits had given up on his crazy rear-engine dragster idea and was going to race a conventional car. Garlits gave the car to Goodyear, then went to the AHRA race, where AHRA boss Jim Tice looked into the trailer and saw the rear-engine car in pieces (to fit both cars, it had to be disassembled). Tice ordered Garlits to put it together right at the gate so that every fan coming in would see that Garlits was there and that he had this new rear-engine car. When Don got it put together and was ready to race, the slingshot drivers did not want to face him, knowing the handling disasters that previous rear-engine cars had been. Don was told to take a single and that if he touched either stripe, he was out of there. Don made a straight and true pass down the track, and he was in. He made it to the finals, where Gary Cochran got him with a holeshot in a slingshot. But the writing was on the wall, and within two years, almost every top fuel team in the country had a new rear-engine car. - Don Garlits (paraphrased), from the Racin' and Rockin' with Draglist.com radio show, July 9, 2010. |

Notes: Don started this revolutionary season at Pomona, qualifying well at #10 but not dominating at 6.842/209.39. He beat Tommy Allen in round one, 6.85/208.33 to 6.89/209.79. Don improved to 6.72/211.76 to defeat Jim Nicoll's 6.85/193.54 in round two. He duplicated the 6.72 at 210.53 to beat Carl Olson's shut-off 10.81 in round three. Don easily defeated Jim Dunn in the semis, 6.70/209.79 to 7.58/146.31. In the final, Don paved the way for the rear-engine future with a 7.031/214.79 defeat of a broken Kenny Safford. Garlits put an exclamation point on things at the Gatornationals with a 6.53/226.13 low qualifying effort. He beat Jim Walther in round one, 7.06/172.08 to 7.40/192.71. However, Sarge Arciero upset him in round two, 6.63/228.42 to 6.81/188.07. Don qualified low at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.447/227.27. A solid 6.54/220.04 took out Paul Schoenfield's 8.79/110.20 in round one, and he took out west coast tough guy Don Moody in round two, 6.58/211.26 to 7.07/155.44. Don kept rolling in round three with a 6.54/200.00 win over Ronnie Martin's 6.84/208.89. He took out Kenny Safford's fouling 15.69/67.46 in the semis with a 9.96/87.12. In the final, Don took out John Wiebe to claim the title, 6.591/213.27 to 7.15/154.37. Garlits qualified #3 at the Summernationals at 6.669/223.88. He beat Richie Broughton in round one, 6.76/218.44 to 7.84/161.29, but lost to a Jim Harnsberger holeshot in round two, 6.76/205.47 to Don's 6.69/216.86. Then came Indy, where Don amazed the world with a 6.211/230.76 low qualifying effort. In round one, he beat Al Friedman, 6.28/230.17 to 6.65/223.88. A 6.32/231.36 took out John Wiebe's otherwise excellent 6.46/232.55 in round two. Don beat Summernationals winner Arnie Behling in round 3, 6.25/231.95 to a solid 6.44/224.43. He took out Carl Olson in the semis, 6.31/230.76 to 7.29/149.00. In the final, Steve Carbone beat Don in the famous "burndown" race, 6.486/229.00 to 6.65/229.00. Garlits qualified #6 at the Amarillo World Finals at 6.849/199.55. He beat Mike Tarter in round one, running 6.61/217.39 when Mike lost fire. Don beat a fouling Jerry Ruth in round two, 6.96/196.07 to 6.90/216.34. In round three, Raymond Beadle also left too soon against Don, sending him on a 7.23/145.63 to 9.86/92.21 victory. Garlits took out Clayton Harris in the semis, 6.60/217.91 to 6.72/208.81. In the final, Gerry Glenn upset the Swamp Rat with a 6.59/227.27 victory when it was Don's turn to foul away a 6.55/222.22 effort. Garlits did not run at the Ontario Supernationals this year. | 2/07/71 - Don Garlits wins NHRA Winternationals in rear-engine dragster (7.03 seconds at 214.79 mph) minus the rear wing. Also ran 6.35 National Record at US 131 on 8/71. Ran 6.53 low qualifier at Gators and 6.211 low qualifier at Indy. Beat Keeling and Clayton digger with Rick Ramsey up at Bakersfield 1971 with an ET of 6.71/223 mph to a quicker 6.64/224. Notes: "Big Daddy" Don Garlits started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #1, setting Top Speed as well at 233.16. But Garlits was unhappy after the first round as youngster John Stewart's 6.45 beat his 6.54 in the opening round. Things went more his way at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where once again, he qualified #1 (6.09/235.60). It was a 32-car field, and Don got to solo in the first two rounds, running easy passes of 6.76/149.25 and 8.45/125 before finally racing round three. In that round, he faced Ronnie Martin, and Don narrowly got the win with his 6.20/234, holding off Martin's quicker 6.17/228. In the semifinals, opponent Jerry Wilson got out of shape and crossed the centerline. Garlits still legged it to a 6.19 at only 203.16 for the win. In the final, he went up against the self-proclaimed "King," Jerry Ruth. Ruth was running strong; every one of his runs in eliminations was in the 6.1s. But Ruth snoozed in the final. Although he ran an AHRA ET record of 6.06 at 223.32, it wasn't enough to beat Garlits' 6.16 with an AHRA record of his own at 239.36. It was then off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Due to wet weather (rained out twice), traction was poor. Still, Garlits ran 6.838/230.17 to qualify #5 in the 32-car field. He improved to 6.603/234.37 in the first round to beat Herm Petersen, and in round two, he set Low ET with a 6.510/227.84 to beat Terry Capp. In round three, Denver Schutz had problems on the line and shut off, so Garlits eased it through with a 9.61/89. The semifinals had Don running 6.541/233.76 to stop Jack Martin's 6.83/202. It was "Big Daddy's" day, as a final round 6.741/235.60 (Top Speed) stopped Dennis Baca's 7.07/213 for the money. The following week (February 25), he was at Sacramento, and it looked like he would have another shot at racing Stewart. But in the semifinals, his 6.68/213.28 lost to Jim Herbert's holeshot 6.72/201. Stewart would go on to beat Herbert in the final. Garlits then set his sights on the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.45 qualified #5 in the 32-car show, but in round three, both he and Dwight Salisbury ran 6.68 (Garlits at a Top Speed of the meet 238.09), but Dwight got the win light. He didn't have to wait long before picking up his next win, as it came the following weekend (March 11) at the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont. This was a sixteen-car show, and Garlits' 6.71/232.55 qualified #5. He improved to 6.57/233.76 in round one to cover Tommy Ivo's 6.64/216 and an even better 6.21/234.98 (Top Speed) beat Chris Karamesines in round two. The semifinals saw a rematch of the AHRA Winternationals final, with Ruth staging against Garlits. The results were the same: Garlits' 6.27/232.55 beat Ruth's 6.32/231. In the final, he faced the Low ET car of James Warren. Warren must have been a bit worried as he fouled, handing the win to Don at 6.69/228.42. A week later (March 18), the black car was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Garlits qualified #2 with a 6.087/239.36. He got quicker in round one, with a 6.059/243.24 that beat Karamesines' strong 6.11/236. Garlits speed was a new NHRA record. But in round two, he fell off to a 6.183/241.28, enough to let eventual winner Petersen's 6.08/234 slip by. He qualified #1 at Tulsa for the AHRA Grand American race in April with a 6.37, and he made it into the final before fouling against Vic Brown. Not sure where Don found the time, but while running all these events, he was match racing all over the country. He stopped at Green Valley in May for the AHRA Grand American race. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.49 lost to John Wiebe's 6.47. His next win came at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. Don qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.46/212.26. He beat Mark Williams in the first round before setting Low ET with a 6.33 in round two over a fouling Lee Beard. A 6.38 beat Gary Beck's close 6.40 in the semifinals. His final round victim was Dan Richins. Garlits wasn't running his best at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. It took him four qualifying attempts before his 6.499/230.17 finally got him into the show (#14). But on Sunday, he was the quickest. He started eliminations with a 6.364/226.16 over Don Moody, and his 6.253/233.16 in round two over Pat Dakin was the quickest run made in eliminations. He beat Marvin Schwartz in the semifinal with a 6.490/221.13 and faced Wiebe in the final. John's best on Sunday was only a 6.48, so Garlits was the favorite going into the final, but he slowed to 6.560/225.00 while Wiebe's consistent 6.49/227 grabbed his first-ever NHRA victory. Don became the fourth member of the Cragar Five Second Club with a 5.95 at Portland on July 7, 1973. He ran 5.99/241.93 at Fremont, Ca., in July 1973. Bret Kepner: At the 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway, Don won Top Fuel Eliminator and was low qualifier at 6.14/230.18. At NHRA Indy, Garlits qualified with #18 at 6.261/228.42 and lost to Gary Beck in round one, 6.01/241 to 6.134/234.37. Don also ran 5.90 at Suffolk. Don had a world-beating day at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario, which rained out on the first Saturday. NHRA attempted to run on Sunday, but it rained out again. The race was rescheduled and run on November 25. Garlits qualified #1 at 5.803/247.25. He beat Carl Olson in round one, 5.980/244.56 to 6.44/228. In round two, his 5.86/245.23 took out Randy Allison's 6.18/200. Ron really stepped up in the semis with a 5.79/245.90 over Dan Richins' 6.69/138. Gaines Markley did not show for the final, but Don' laid down an amazing 5.78/244.56 for the win. We think that was a 5.784. We need confirmation. Notes: ND article indicated that Butch Maas, who had finally recovered from burns sustained driving the Hawaiian funny car, debuted the car with Garlits at the AHRA Grand American event at Orange County in early 1973. He did not qualify but ran 180 mph. Garlits was also there in his more conventional shorty dragster. Don Cook drove the car at IHRA Lakeland, Florida. Garlits said, "Both Maas and Cook said it was doing something funny, so I got in the car myself for a ride." Body by Jocko. Photo from Lakeland 73. |

Notes: Don set both ends of the AHRA top fuel record at Beeline when he ran 5.78/247.25 during the semifinals of the 1974 AHRA Winternationals. He lost the final to Mike Wagoner when his brakes failed after his burnout, and he coasted down the track. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 6.09 at Pomona, 6.23 at Gainesville. | After earning $300,000 in '73, "Big Daddy" hoped to make even more in '74. Garlits started the season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. The eight-car field consisted of eight of the nine drivers in the Cragar Five Second club (Mike Snively was without a ride). There was no qualifying for the race as the first-round pairings were drawn from a hat. Garlits went on to win by beating Dan Richins in the first round, with a 6.45/200.44, and a Low ET shot of 6.33 at 225 in the semifinals stopped John Stewart's 6.37/199. In the final, he faced Larry Dixon's Chevy-powered car. Larry lost a blower, and Don won the event with a 6.38/226.13 (Top Speed). It was an excellent way to start the year. At Beeline or the AHRA Winternationals, his 6.04/233.76 qualified #2. A first-round 6.12/227.27 beat Bob Williams, while in round two, he picked up to 5.83/245.90 in beating a fouling Ron Attebury. As mentioned earlier, he reset both ends of the AHRA record with his 5.78/247.25 trashing of Frank Bradley in the semifinals. He was to face Mike Wagoner in the final, but his brakes failed to hold the car on the line, and Mike soloed for the win. The following week (February 3), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10 with a 6.09/235.60. In round one, Dwight Salisbury fouled against him, so Don advanced with a 6.47/207.85. In the second round, his brakes failed again just as they had at Beeline, and Pat Dakin soloed for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Don ran 6.23/231.36 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.28/232.55 lost to John Weibe's 6.39/194. He also failed to reach the finals at Sacramento on March 23, but he won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont a week later (March 31). He qualified #2 with a 6.37 and then beat Walt Rhoades in the first round, before stepping up to 6.05/236.84 (Low ET and Top Speed) in beating Dwight Hughes in round two. A semifinal 6.14/232.58 took out a tire-smoking Bob Noice and advanced him into the final against Dennis Baca. The two had a close race, with Don's 6.86/231 beating Baca's 6.87/225. Garlits then went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American on April 6, where he won another one. He showed up with a new Mark Danekas Super Blower. Forty-two cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Don's 6.09/241.28 (Top Speed and new track record) got him the #2 spot. Bill Carter sneezed a blower in the first round, and Don advanced with a 6.47. In round two, a 6.20/238.09 beat Rance McDaniel, and in the semifinals, his 6.37/234.37 beat Gary Hazen. This put him into the final against low qualifier James Warren. James had lost a blower in his semifinal win and had to trash to make the final, but he did. Garlits got the victory with a 6.24/239.36 over Warren's 6.35/223. |

Notes: Won the 1975 Winternationals. Won IHRA Bristol over Beck in June, 6.10/238.72 (IHRA speed record) to 6.18/225.56. On 7/01/75, ran first IHRA 5-second, 240 mph run at Union Grove with a 5.89/244.48 (need to confirm if this was SR21 or SR22). Runner-up to Beck at IHRA Dragway 42 in August 1975. Ran 6.03/245.23. Was that Swamp Rat 21 or 22? If 22, return this entry's speed to 244.56. Swamp Rat 21 was originally built for "Jungle Jim," but he changed his mind before it was finished. Garlits ran it until mid-year, then brought out 22. The easiest way to tell the difference in photos is that 21 had a black roll cage, and 22 was chromed. Pretty sure the Union Grove/IHRA record was set by 21. Werner Ch. Guillory. Photo: Big Daddy's 1975 Rear Engine Dragster - 'Chute Out at Phoenix. |

Notes: Glen Blakeley helped to build the chassis. Garlits was contracted to run only the IHRA series in 1976, so he did not run any NHRA or AHRA national events. Photo from the 1976 PHR Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. We need to confirm where the times were run. We originally listed them as happening at NHRA Atlanta and Indy 1976, but as noted, Don did not run the NHRA circuit this year. Don ran at Santa Pod for the Easter Meet but was off the pace all day with mechanical problems and a best time in the 6.90s. He redlighted against Peter Crane in round one, and Crane ran the first five in Europe with a 5.97. Was that this Swamp Rat or an older one? See the Video Link. |
