Notes: IHRA 1. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1978. Also 5.90 at 241.28 in an article. Won Indy 1978 with an eliminations best of 5.86/243. Number one qualifier at NHRA Winters at 5.777/245.90. Ran Donovan this year. Gary Beck was quoted as saying, "If he (Garlits) puts a Donovan in that thing, I'm going to put a train whistle on mine, to move him over at 1,000 feet!" Garlits had a great season in '78. It started early with a win at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET) and then ran 6.23/221 over Jerry Ruth in the first round. He repeated those numbers in round two while beating Marvin Graham, and in the semifinals, Don didn't receive a time slip, but he was clocked at 238.72 (Top Speed and a new track record) while beating Frank Bradley. In the final, he faced Paul Longenecker, and Garlits stepped it back up, running a 6.16/236 for the victory. Don ran over 240 on several occasions on the NHRA trail, but no faster than the Pomona 245.90. We formerly listed 247.25 for this year. Did he do that on the AHRA or IHRA trail?

Notes: Don ran 5.87/243.90 at Fremont on 3/08/78. Assuming it was this car. Ran SR 23 and 24 this year. | Garlits showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with his new car and without longtime sponsor "Wynn's." He reset the track record to 5.777 (speed on the run was 245.90) in qualifying, but in the first round, he fell off to a 6.17/236 that lost to Richard Tharp's 6.05/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" machine. A win soon followed when he went to Phoenix for the Winter Championships. There he qualified #1 and went on to beat Rob Bruins in the final with a 6.05. The car continued to qualify well when at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet; he ran Low ET of the meet with a 5.85 to lead the 32-car field. He failed to reach the final, but the car performed well. He won his 17th NHRA National event when he scored a victory at the Gatornationals the following week. A 6.02/242.58 qualified #2 behind Kelly Brown's 6.00/235. These two would work their way into the final. Don's first-round 6.16/238 beat Frank Bradley, and a 6.19/240 in the second round beat his former crew chief, Ron Barrow. In the semifinals, his 6.21/234 beat Canadian Graham Light's 6.26/239. This set up the final between the two Donovan-powered low qualifiers. Kelly had problems and had to shut down while Garlits won with a 6.55/229.00. The following week he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he led the eight-car field with a 6.36/229. Unfortunately, in the first round, he was upset when Paul Longenecker's 6.37/219 put Don's 6.44/227 on the trailer. He was also upset at the NHRA Division 2 Opener, losing to Lee Weller in the final. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. There, he and final-round opponent Jerry Ruth smoked the tires heavily, and Ruth's 7.62 won over Garlits, who finally gave up and shut down to 13.78. April was closed out by Don winning the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham on the 30th. It was a sixteen-car show, and Garlits qualified #4 with a 6.23/238.72. He beat Lou Novotny, Longenecker, and Dick LaHaie (in that order) before dropping Weller in the final. Another win came the following week at Tulsa (May 7) for the AHRA Springnationals. Don qualified #2 with a 6.51 behind Bradley's 6.42. It was an eight-car show, and they would work their way to the final. Garlits soloed with a 6.61/218.44 in the first round when Greg Brewton failed to fire, and, in the semifinals, a 6.41/229.59 beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.56/217. In the final, the "Old Man" stepped up and set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.34/229.59 to win over Bradley's ailing 14.03/96. Notes: Garlits raced at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he ended up as the first alternate with a 6.13 best. The following week, he was at Fremont's East-West meet, where he ran a best of three match race against Tommy Ivo's jet. Don won the first race with a 6.10/240.00. In the second race, he lost when the car tossed a blower belt. He came back to win the third race to win the match. Shortly after that (February 18), he was at Beeline Dragway for the NHRA Division 7 opener. He beat Shirley Muldowney there, but he lost to Marvin Graham. A big win followed at the Bakersfield March Meet. This was the first year the race was reduced to sixteen cars. His 5.86 qualified #1, and in round one, a 5.90/232.55 beat Dave Uyehara's 5.90/245. In round two, Hank Johnson's 6.27/227 fell to Garlits' 5.95/226.13. Gary Ormsby fouled against him in the semi-final, and Don advanced with a 5.87/234.98. He stayed strong in the final, where his 5.88/240.00 won over Rick Ramsey's 6.08/218. Gainesville was not a race "Big Daddy" would like to remember. He "only" qualified #15 at 6.13/239.36. Jeg Coughlin broke against him in the first round, and Don ran 6.65/223.88. In the second round, he smoked the tires, and his 6.56/209.79 lost to Rob Bruins' 6.07/240. Another win came his way on March 18 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.99 qualified #4. He beat Marvin Schwartz in the opening round with a 6.03 and then ran 6.07 in the semi-final over Clayton Harris' 6.43. He faced Connie Kalitta in the final, and Don's 6.20/232.53 won over Kalitta's 6.49/199. He then opened the month of April by winning the NHRA Division 2 opener held at DeSoto. Only seven cars showed, and he was the slowest in qualifying. He picked up to 6.14/230.76 in the first round to defeat Schwartz's 6.47/224, and he set low ET in the semi-final with a 6.01/233.16 that beat Bobby Hilton's 6.37/198. He went up against low qualifier Muldowney in the final, and his 6.06/244.56 barely covered her 6.07/241. His next win came at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta, where he beat Coughlin in the final. He was absent from the races until he reached Maple Grove in mid-May for the Dutch Classic. This was another eight-car show, and his 6.05/236.84 (Top Speed) qualified #1. The race was rain-delayed, and some cars did not return, so Garlits got a solo in the first round and ran low ET at 5.99/236.22. In the semi-final, he dropped Howard Haight with a 6.03/233.76. That set up a final-round meeting with Bobby Hilton. Garlits' 6.18/231.95 won when Hilton had to shut off on the line with a fuel leak. He was in St. Louis early in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He also won there; he always seemed to win at St. Louis. The win didn't come easy. His 6.16 qualified second to Graham's 6.14. He beat Jack Revelle in the first round and Bill Selley in the semi-final. He faced the always tough Frank Bradley in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Garlits' 6.23 top Bradley's 6.24. The following week he towed to Columbus and won the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 at 6.00/235.60. A 6.09/238.72 took care of Bill Pryor's ailing 6.37/223. Kalitta's 6.08/239 in the second round lost to his 6.01/241.58. In the semi-final, Don's 6.04/239.36 beat Johnny Abbott's tire-shaking 6.12/239. This time he faced Richard Tharp driving the "Candies and Hughes" car in the final. Tharp was hungry as it was his first NHRA National event final since the '77 U.S. Nationals. But Richard's off-pace 6.51/183 was no match for Garlits' 6.11/236.84. Notes: This car was nicknamed Godzilla and the Cable Car. | Don started the season by qualifying #3 in the eight-car field at the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Jeb Allen in the first round. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his best of 6.05/243.24 was good for the third alternate. Garlits competed at Bakersfield for the March Meet, but he lost early. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.94 qualified #4, and in the first round, he beat Junior Kaiser. In round two, a 6.02 beat John Kimble's 6.08, but in the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to 7.36/119.20, which lost to eventual winner Jeb Allen. He showed up at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis in April, where his 5.98 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He beat Wayne Ernest in round one, and in the semifinals, his 6.03/234.98 beat Jeg Coughlin's 6.15/237. This put Don into the final against Don Reed. Garlits grabbed the victory with a 6.10/227.27 when Reed had problems and shut off to a 10.95/61. The next major NHRA race was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on April 27. It was an eight-car show, and Garlits qualified #3 with a 5.95/243.24. A 6.02/242.58 in the first round, lost to Coughlin's 5.99/235. At the NHRA Springnationals, Don's 5.96/241.93 qualified #3. He beat Junior Kaiser in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.06/245 got some revenge over Coughlin's 6.20. But in the semifinals, he faced Shirley Muldowney. Don took a chance on the tree and fouled. He didn't see it and kept on the pedal, setting Low ET with a 5.932, but losing to Shirley's 6.04. Shirley got Don again at the PHR event in August, winning with a 5.962 to 5.961 holeshot victory in the final. Don's best NHRA national event times were the 5.932/247.93 at the Springnationals. Where was the 5.75/251.39 run?

Notes: Garlits was at Tucson Dragway in mid-January for the AHRA Winternationals. He dominated the event. He started by setting a track record 5.85 to qualify low for the eight-car field. In eliminations, no one else ran in the five-second zone. In the first round, he beat Frank Bradley with a 5.94/240.00. He then reset both ends of the track record in the semi-final with a 5.79/247.24 that easily covered Dick Lahaie's 6.15. In the final, he faced the second qualifier, Shirley Muldowney, and she fouled while Don ran 5.94/240.64 for the victory. He did not race at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.78/247.25 qualified #5. In the opening round, his 6.02/244.56 beat Lucille Lee's 6.44/221. He improved to 5.72/249 in round two to defeat Johnny Abbott, and a semi-final 5.94/234.37 dropped Jim Barnard's 6.02/231. He faced Muldowney in the final, and this time her 5.82/240 beat Don's 6.18/231.95 runner-up effort. Shortly after, he qualified #7 for the Bakersfield March Meet with a 5.88/247.93. But he was gone after the first round as his tire-shaking 6.59 lost to Bradley's 6.19. He was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Division 4 race in April. He ran well, dropping Keith Craig in the semi-final with a 5.90/230.76, but a final round 6.04/235.60 lost to Gene Snow's 5.80/240. Another win came his way in the first week of May at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. There, his 6.44 qualified second to Jerry Ruth's 6.39. These two would work their way into the final. Garlits ran a much-improved 6.26/225.56 in the first round over Muldowney's 6.30/234. He had a close race with Bradley in the semi-final that saw Don's 6.24/237.46 (Top Speed) beat Bradley's 6.25/230. In the final, Ruth slowed to 6.65/189 while Garlits ran 6.17/237.46 for the win. High gear only car. The car weighed only 1353 lbs. On 7/11/82, Don became the first in the AHRA to go 260 mph at Gary, Indiana. he also went 255.54 mph. Don only raced one NHRA event in 1982, the Gatornationals, where he was runner-up to Shirley Muldowney. His best times at the event were 5.724/249.30. We list those as his best times of the year as the Gary speed clocks were often invalid.

Notes: Don started the '84 season by running a best of three match race against Shirley Muldowney at Firebird Raceway. Unfortunately, he lost three straight. Things went much better at the AHRA Winternationals. There he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.01. He advanced when low qualifier Jerry Ruth blew both a rear end and a motor in the first round. In the semifinals, his 5.90/244.56 beat Dick LaHaie's 5.93/228. He won the race with a final round 5.83/211 when opponent Gene Snow got crossed up and shut off. Garlits lost a match race with Gene Snow in March at Green Valley. Snow won with a 5.80 best over Garlits' trailing 6.31. Don really came alive in the late season. He won Indy and the World Finals with Low 5.50s at 260 plus, with best times of 5.463/263.92 at Ontario. Before that, Don ran 263.92 at Eunice LA in September.

Notes: Garlits started the '85 season at Firebird Dragway in January for its Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was there for a best-of-three-match race against Gary Beck. Don won all three races to win the match. His 5.61/251.39 in the second race looked pretty strong, but it was nothing compared to his final race, where he reset both ends of the track record with a 5.45 (career-best to this point) at 259.36. Then things went bad. A wing strut broke, and the dragster ended up sliding down the track on its side before finally rolling a couple of times in the mud field that adjoined that racetrack. The car was a mess, but Don only suffered a bruised elbow. He was back behind the wheel a week later at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.87/256.41 qualified #12. He met Beck in the opening round of eliminations, and Don's 5.53/258 beat Beck's 5.68/235. A 5.50/262.39 covered Dick LaHaie's 5.73/240 in round two, but in the semifinal, both he and his opponent, Joe Amato, blew their engines. Joe coasted across the finish line first. Three cars qualified in the 5.5's at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, and Garlits' 5.55/259.36 (Top Speed) got the #3 spot in the field. in the opening round, he ran 5.61/255.82 to beat Jack Ostrander, but in round two, he was upset by Bill Mullins. They had a great race that saw Don's 5.68/254.09 lose to Mullins' 5.67/250. Garlits won his 24th NHRA national event at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.54/259.96. In the first round, he cracked 260 with a 5.62/261.93 that beat LaHaie's 5.75/249. He ran the fastest speed for a Top Fuel dragster (up until this time). Don's 5.62/265.48 buried Larry Minor's off-pace 6.32/156. He faced Amato in the final, and there was just no stopping Garlits on this day as his 5.51/258 easily beat Joe's 5.68/222. | Don ran 5.436/260.71 to qualify #1 at the Budweiser Summernationals & would win the race. | Also ran 259.36 at the 1985 Northstars. Don was a 5.56/266.27 winner at ADRA Kansas City.
