Notes: On May 4, Sam was at National Trail for the NHRA Division 3 race. He ran a first-round 9.11/146.34 to beat Stacy Shields' 9.39/146, but a 9.15 in the semifinal lost to the race's eventual winner Bobby Yowell, at 9.00. In June, he was back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. Shortly after, Sam was at Edgewater for the third NHRA Division 3 race. His 9.03 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Bob Glidden's 8.86. An opening round 9.12/147.78 beat Bob Morrison, and he took out Floyd Williams in the semifinal. He faced Glidden in the final, and Bob had been running steady eight-second times. Gianino caught a bit of good luck when Glidden broke in the final, and he snatched the victory with a 9.09/149.50. Sam qualified at Indy with a 9.22. His best NHRA national event times were 9.073 at the Gators (# alternate) and 150.75 in a first-round loss at the Summernationals.
