Notes: Swept both IHRA races at Bristol in 76. Won Springs with an 8.68 at 154.63, then won the All Americans at Bristol with an 8.65 at 156.25. Set National Record at 156.25 at NHRA Gators. Ran 155.44 at NHRA Pomona Winters. | Bob was not happy with the NHRA's Pro Stock weight breaks for '76. The 351 powered Fords were carrying a lot more weight compared to the '75 season. More weight meant more breakage of parts. Glidden started the season at the Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. He qualified #2 with an 8.90 and lasted until the second round before losing to Wayne Gapp's four-door Maverick. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, these two would meet again only this time in the final. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.80 and he beat Wally Booth and Roy Hill in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he came up against low-qualifier Bill Jenkins. Bob got a bit of luck when Jenkins fouled away an 8.77/153 while Glidden advanced with an 8.86/155.70. Gapp and Glidden met in their ninth NHRA final. Glidden got his ninth NHRA National event victory with an 8.82/155.70 beating Wayne's 8.91/153. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.78 qualified #3. He scored an easy first-round win and then beat Lee Edwards in the second round with an 8.87/154.63. In the semifinals, he met Jenkins' Monza again, only this time it was Larry Lombardo behind the wheel. Bob tried hard, but his 8.83 was no match for the Monza's 8.74. He did leave with a new NHRA speed record of 156.52. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 and in the first round, his 8.89/152.28 beat Shelby Jester in Andy White's Monza. An 8.92/152.02 beat Bob Ingles' 9.12/147 in round two while another 8.92 at 153 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.83/153 in the semifinals. While Bob wasn't happy with the NHRA side of things he was dominating on the IHRA circuit. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Summernationals in July. Glidden's 8.77 qualified #7. He made it into the second round where his 8.87 lost to Wally Booth's 8.73. Best NHRA ET was 8.772 at the Summers. |

Notes: Set National Record ET at Fallnationals at 8.50. Low qualifier at World Finals at 8.61. Ran 8.550/157 at World Finals, defeating newly crowned world champion Don Nicholson in the final. Ran 8.72 at Pomona, 8.81 at Gainesville, 8.72 at Columbus, 8.64 at Englishtown, 8.63 at Indy, and 8.55 at Beech Bend. | Bob started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 8.72/156.52 to qualify #3. He beat Mark Yuill in the first round, and in round two, he advanced when Randy Humphrey fouled. In the semifinals, he faced low qualifier Don Nicholson. "Dyno" grabbed a slight holeshot, and his 8.73/156 held on for the win over Bob's slightly quicker 8.72/157.89. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with an 8.81. He lasted until the second round, where the Pinto broke on its burnout, giving Ken Dondero a solo into the semifinals. On April 24, he won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. He stopped Wally Booth in the final with an 8.67/155.44 (Low ET and Top Speed). Glidden won the next Division 3 race held at Edgewater as well. He qualified #1 with an 8.68 and set Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.67/157.89. He beat Joe Satmary in the final. NHRA held its second annual Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, and once again, Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.62/155.70. He got the "odd-lot" single in the first round and ran 8.70/156.79 (Top Speed). In the semifinals, an 8.64/156.79 beat Frank Iaconio, setting up a final-round meeting with Booth's AMC. In the final, Bob's 8.65/156.52 easily covered Wally's 8.73/153. It was his first NHRA National event win since the '76 Winternationals. A week after that (June 12), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.72 qualified #5, but he lost early. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Glidden just barely out-qualified Nicholson for the pole as both ran 8.64. Glidden beat Warren Johnson in round one, with an 8.68/156, but in round two, he had problems and slowed to 9.08/121 in a loss to Larry Lombardo's 8.66/156 in Bill Jenkins' Monza. He ended July with a win at the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.69/155 that beat Satmary's Camaro at 8.91/152. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.58/156.79. An opening round 8.65 beat Iaconio's 8.79, and in the semifinals, he beat Booth's 8.68/153 with an 8.63/155.70. He faced Lombardo in the final. Larry had run a quicker 8.62 in his semifinal race, so it was close. But the Monza had problems in the final and slowed to 10.12/93 while Glidden chalked up another victory with an 8.63/156.52. Shortly after that (August 21), he was at Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division 3 race. Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.55/157.34. He worked his way into the final, where he faced Dave Avery. It wasn't much of a contest as Bob's 8.69/154.90 easily took the victory over Dave's 9.36/148. Then came the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. Bob wasn't pleased with this race during qualifying. He watched as Nicholson unloaded and proceeded to run an 8.61 with his "good" engine and then come back on Saturday to run 8.63 with a backup! Glidden did not want to be second. He made runs of 8.80, 8.72, 8.88, and finally, 8.67. But that was the closest he, or anyone else, could get to "Dyno." On race day, an opening-round 8.84/149 topped Bob ingles' 9.05/151. In round two, he improved to 8.63/156 to beat Richie Zul's 9.25/153. Another strong pass of 8.65/156.79 beat Frank Iaconio's 8.89/152 in the semis. That set up an all-Ford final with "Dyno." Don's winning semifinal time had been 8.72/155, so Bob now looked to have the edge. But in the final, the Pinto broke just off the line, slowing to 13.99, while Nicholson's 8.73 picked up the victory. We need validation of the third digit of the 8.50 at Seattle. |

Notes: In July, Glidden was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.40. An opening round 8.43 beat Joe Gouger, but in the semifinal, the Pinto broke at mid-track against eventual winner Lee Edwards. In August, he went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships which were being run under IHRA rules for the Pro Stock class. He ran steady 8.3s to win over the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.30 (Low ET) beat Bill Robertson and an 8.32 in round two beat Henry Hallman. Another 8.32 in the semifinal beat Dave Avery and yet another 8.32/161.57 got the victory in the final over Bobby Yowell's 8.39/163. |

Notes: Glidden debuted this car at Edgewater on July 9 for the NHRA Division 3 Points race. The unique machine replaced Bob's Pinto, in which he began the season. It was a promising debut, as he scored 8.76/152.54 to qualify #2 behind Joe Satmary's 8.75/154. An improved 8.66/154.90 in the opening round of eliminations beat Phil Gingerich, while a semifinal 8.68/153.58 handled Dave Avery. Bob faced Satmary in the final, and his 8.65 (Low ET) at 154.10 beat Joe's 8.75/153. A week later (July 16), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he scored his sixteenth NHRA National Event victory. He qualified #1 with an 8.62/154.90 and then ran 8.58/148.02 in the first round to beat Dempsey Hardy's 8.80/153. An 8.535 (Low ET) in round two at 152.54 beat Richie Zul's 8.66/156. That was the quickest side-by-side race in history at that point. An 8.55/149.00 in the semifinals beat Wally Booth's 8.70/154. In the final, he met up with Bill Jenkins' Monza, driven by Larry Lombardo. Bob got the win with an 8.55/154.37 over Larry's 8.71/155. It was also interesting to note that this was his tenth straight NHRA final-round appearance. That was followed by a trip to Maryland International for its US Pro Stock Open event. It was an eight-car show, and Glidden's 8.66 qualified #1. An even better 8.64 in round one beat Satmary's 8.84, but Zul cut a great light in the semifinals, and his 8.80 hung on to win over Bob's quicker 8.66. On July 30, Glidden went to the final NHRA Division 2 race at Miami-Hollywood. His 8.69/152.80 advanced in the opening round when Art Gravatt fouled. A semifinal 8.71/153.58 beat Jim Kinnett's 8.95/154. He faced Dempsey Hardy in the final, and Bob made winning look easy as he set Low ET with an 8.65/154.32, scoring the victory over Hardy's 8.84/154. Then it was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, this time with an 8.585 at only 148.51. The field was short a car, so Bob got the "odd-lot" solo and ran another 8.58 at only 151.26 to advance. Frank Iaconio's 8.73/154 fell to the Fairmont's 8.55 at only 149. He faced Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the final. "Grumpy" had been taking shots at Bob for his new Fairmont, calling it down. So Glidden really enjoyed beating Larry's 8.72/166 in the final, with another 8.550 (Low ET) at a shutting-off way early 144.46! He did that just to bug Jenkins a bit. By now, the big white "boxcar" was bugging everyone as it was proving itself unbeatable. His next stop came at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.68. Round one saw his 8.72/155.70 beat Joe Gouger's 9.06/142. Warren Johnson fouled away an 8.76/154 against him in round two, and Bob advanced with an 8.72/157.61 (Top Speed). He made like a bracket racer in the semifinals, where he ran his third straight 8.72 (at 156.52) to beat Satmary's 8.80/154. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and once again, the results were the same. Bob's 8.74/152.54 got the victory over Larry's far behind 8.89/153. The domination continued at the final NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend. Bob ran 8.68/158.17 (Top Speed) and 8.64/168.17 to beat Avery and Gouger in eliminations. He went up against Satmary in the final. Joe took a chance and fouled away an 8.74/154, while Glidden notched another win with his 8.64 at only 145.39. Before Indy, Glidden was awarded the "Pro Stock Driver of the Year" by Car Craft Magazine. Bob was the low qualifier at Indy at 8.622/157.61, finally showing some top end. he beat a fouling Dempsey Hardy in round one, 8.648/153.84 to 8.78/154. In round two, Bob took out Mark Yuill, 8.606/154.37 to 8.81/154. Frank Iaconio gave it a good shot against Bob in the semis but was a tenth behind his Low ET pass of 8.600/153.84 to 8.70/155. In the final, Joe Satmary's 8.77/155 finished more than two car lengths back. In Seattle, Bob ran even quicker. He qualified #1 at 8.557/155.70. In round one, his 8.52/154.34 beat Brad Yuill's 8.75 (speed unknown). Bob ran 8.52/157.34 to beat Wally Booth's 8.67/153 in round two. Lee Shepherd fouled against him in the semis, but Bob ran 8.555/152.54 to Lee's 8.70/154 anyway. In the final, Bob set the Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet at 8.499/158.52 to beat Frank Iaconio's game 8.57/155. Bob wrapped up his dream season at Ontario for the World Finals. An 8.556/156.79 was the low qualifier, and he commenced race day with an 8.610/153.32 to 8.78/154 win over Andy Mannarino. An 8.635/156.25 took out Warren Johnson's 8.82/155 in round two, and an 8.587/157.06 beat Wally Booth's off-pace pas in the semis. That speed tied for Top Speed of the Meet, which was awarded to Mark Yuill, who had run the number in qualifying. In the final, Bob again defeated Larry Lombardo, 8.617/156.25 to 8.74/155. What a season! Every other Pro Stock racer was scared of this car. Bob was running 8.4s while shutting down early! That was unheard of. People were speculating that if he ran it out the back door, it would have run over 160. Bob won the NHRA Championship. |

Notes: Glidden had NHRA always weight factoring his Ford combinations. Any time he starting dominating the class, NHRA always threw more weight on his cars. This being said, he liked having a chance to throw out all the extra weight and run his cars in match race competition. In June 1978, Glidden had his Pinto at York US 30 for a best of three match race against Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza. In their first race, Glidden took it with no times recorded for either driver. Lombardo's 8.29/161 won in the second race when Glidden fouled away an 8.27/166.35. Bob wrapped up the match in the third race, where he ran 8.25/163.05 to beat Larry, who got out of shape and shut down. With his busy NHRA schedule, he couldn't run a lot of match races, but he did run at Maryland International on August 16 for the Mountain Motor Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.27 qualified #4. Another 8.27/162.45 in the opening round beat Bill Clayton, and in the semifinals, he made an easy pass when Lombardo fouled against him. He faced the "king" of Pro Stock match racers in the final, "Dyno Don" Nicholson. The final didn't turn out to be much of a race as Glidden's engine blew just after leaving the line, and Don ran 8.23/163 for the victory. |

Notes: 339 W-2 Wedge Small block, not a hemi. Set national ET record at 8.48 at Gainesville, then reset it at Fremont at 8.43. Tested 342 Ted Spehar engine. | Bob parked his championship-winning Fairmont and went to Chrysler for '79. Racers thinking it would take him some time to adjust to the new combination, were not too happy after qualifying ended at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There at the top of the ladder, was Glidden's 8.56/159.57 (Top Speed). An 8.59 at only 147.05 beat Brad Yuill's 8.83/154 in the first round. He picked up to an 8.50 at only 144.69 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.70/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro in round two. His speed continued to drop as in the semifinal; Bob ran 8.58 at 140.84 to drop Don Nicholson's 8.83/156. That put him in the final against Joe Satmary. Bob lost a freeze plug and had to drive through his own water, and still set an 8.49 track record at a paltry 150.75 to beat Joe's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was more of the same for the other Pro Stock drivers. Bob qualified #1 at 8.52/159.57 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.58 beat Nicholson, while his 8.55/149 advanced when Satmary fouled in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with an 8.48/150 over Mark Yuill. It was good to see long-time Pro Stock campaigner Ronnie Sox up for the challenge in the final. Sox was also running a 340 based Mopar car, and this was the first all Mopar NHRA final in six years. But it was apparent that his hasn't as stout as Glidden's as in the final, Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.53/147.29 as Sox fouled with an 8.75/156 attempt. Things didn't change when the teams pulled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again, Glidden headed the Pro Stock qualifiers with an 8.54/158.45 (Low ET and Top Speed). It was an eight-car show, and Bob breezed past the first-round with an 8.59 when Jim Kinnett fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.61/151 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.66. In the final, he ran Lee Shepherd. The two left together, but soon Bob took control, and his 8.59/149 beat Lee's 8.71/155. At the NHRA Springnationals, there was some hope for the other Pro Stock racers when Bob didn't quite win all the accolades. Sure he set Low ET, was first in qualifying, and won the race, but someone else got Top Speed (Larry Lombardo at 159.85). His 8.57 (Low ET) was tops in qualifying, and he ran 8.69, 8.66, and 8.66 over Satmary, Shepherd, and Frank Iaconio to reach the final against Lombardo. A final round 8.61/157.61 copped the victory over Larry's 8.76/151. Bob was now undefeated for a full year in NHRA National event competition. He finally lost at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals. He had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 9.08/148.27. In the first round, a 9.12/141.73 beat Nicholson, but he fouled against Randy Humphrey in the semifinals. He made it one round further at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #1 with an 8.52, then set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.51/160.14 on his way to a final-round meeting with Iaconio. Bob's Arrow broke in the final, and Frank got the victory with an 8.60/156. He got back to his winning ways at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.49/158.17 (Top Speed). He beat Mark Yuill in round one, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET at 8.46 over Nicholson, who fouled. In the final, he met Iaconio again, and this time the little Arrow didn't break. Bob ran 8.47 to take the win over Frank's 8.53. In August, Byron held an interesting best of three match race between Nicholson's Mustang and Glidden's Arrow. They were said to be legal weight, but the times were pretty quick. Dyno beat Bob three straight with a best of 8.34, while Glidden's three runs were 8.46, an 8.36 with a red light, and an 8.37. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Bob was running some special carburetors from Holley. Once again, he qualified #1 with an 8.58. Another 8.58 at 157.34 beat Kinnett in round one. He set Low ET in round two with an 8.56/157.61 that took out Andy Mannarino. In the semifinals, another 8.58/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.71/157. In the final, he faced off against Lombardo in Bill Jenkins Camaro. Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.61/143.50 over Larry's 8.72/154. |

Notes: Lee Shepherd and Bob Glidden waged war in Pro Stock unlike any had seen before in the class. Glidden started the season in his Arrow, in which he had won the NHRA Pro Stock championship the year before. It wasn't cutting it in 1980. Lee won the first two NHRA events of the season, with Glidden's best showing being a runner-up at the Gatornationals. Bob had Don Hardy build him a new Fairmont that debuted at Suffolk for a match race against Bill Jenkins. He had just delivered the Arrow to its new owner. Glidden was happy to be back in a Ford as he defeated Jenkins three straight with times of 8.35/158, 8.37/158, and 8.51/153. He then took it to Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 opener. During qualifying, he reset the NHRA speed record to 162.16. The accompanying ET of 8.43 (Low ET) gave him the pole. In the first round, he ran 8.52/153.32 to beat Don Coonce's 8.74/153, and an 8.46/154.10 in the semi-final beat Jim Mikel's 8.85/153. In the final, he blasted out a 8.51/158.17 for the victory over Sam Gianino's off-pace 9.29/154. He was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals the following week. He qualified #1 with a Low ET of the meet 8.41 at 160.71 while Shepherd qualified #5 in the eight-car show with an 8.54, meaning that the two would meet in the first round. In that first-round match-up, Lee ran another 8.54/158 that beat Glidden's quicker 8.49/160.71. Lee went on to win his third straight national event. Bob had to get his act together quickly if he was to win another championship. On May 4, he won the second Division 3 race at Edgewater, setting Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 with a 8.48/158.45. He beat Andy Mannarino in the final with an 8.50/153.32. He then made a move on Shepherd at the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.52/158.45 qualified #1, while Lee's 8.57 was second in the now big block Camaro. Bob set Low ET in the first round with an 8.49/157.61 single when Roy Hill broke on the line. He got another solo in round two went "Dyno Don's" Mustang broke on the line. Bob advanced with an 8.54. He then stopped Frank Iaconio's 8.60/156 in the semi-final with an 8.53/154. In the final, Bob got his first national event win of the year with an 8.53/155.70 stopping Shepherd's 8.62/155. He then went to Martin, Michigan, for the next NHRA Division 3 race and won that as well, beating Joe Satmary in the final. Another win followed on June 28 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bob qualified #1 with a Low ET of the Meet 8.99 (Bandimere's first eight), while the Reher-Morrison Camaro was second with a 9.02. Together they mowed down the competition to meet again in the final, where Bob ran another 8.99/149.50 to win over Shepherd's close 9.01/147. Going into the Summernationals, Bob was 3,000 points behind Shepherd. In qualifying, Glidden looked good, running an 8.41/159.29 for the #1 spot. Lee was second with an 8.48/159. Once again, they ran through the field to meet in the final. Bob ran a best of 8.48/159.85 in eliminations while Lee's best was an 8.50/162. In the final, Shepherd ran an 8.54/158 that beat Bob's 8.53/159.29. Glidden won the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove and set Low ET and Top Speed. He qualified #1 at the PHR Championships with an 8.59 while his nemesis ran an 8.67 for third. Both got past the first-round with Glidden setting Low ET at 8.52 in beating Paul Gentilozzi. Gidden and Shepherd met with the Camaro breaking at half-track in the semifinals and Bob winning with an 8.53/158.17. Bob went on to win the event with a final round 8.58 over Jim Kinnett. The NHRA tour traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals where an 8.47/159.29 (Top Speed) by Glidden was good for #2 in qualifying as Shepherd got the pole. Once again, the two raced through the field to meet in the final for the fifth time this year. Unfortunately, Bob's line lock was faulty so he rushed through his burnout. In a rush, he left the Lenco in third gear so when the light turned green, the car just bogged off the line. He could only watch as Lee ran an 8.44/159 for his fifth win of the year. Bob also won the final NHRA Division 3 race held at Beech Bend near the middle of August. That made it a clean sweep as he won all the Division three races. At the last event, he qualified #1, got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round and ran 8.58/157.61. He then beat Coonce's 8.75/153 in the semi-final with a 8.55/157.61. He faced Andy Mannarino in the final and Andy's 8.74/155 finished runner-up to Glidden's 8.54/160.42 (Low ET, Top Speed, and new track records). Bob was kicking himself after Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.43/161.29. Both he and the second qualifier (8.45) worked their way to the final. Bob was running much quicker than Shepherd during eliminations. His 8.48/161.00 in the opening round beat Alban Gauthier's 8.85/156. A round two 8.51/158.87 took out Dempsey Hardy's 8.76/154 and in the semi-final, he ran 8.46/160.71 to defeat Iaconio's 8.53/160. By comparison, Lee ran 8.54 in his semi-final race. It looked as though Bob had the edge, but he fouled away an 8.48/154 while Lee got his sixth win with an 8.50/159. Bob was now 426 markers behind Shepherd. Glidden had to do something fast and he did at the next event, the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. He showed up with a new destroked Cleveland of 327 cubic inches. He qualified #1 with an 8.35/159.85 while Shepherd was unusually farther back with an 8.52/157 qualifying #4. Glidden set an 8.324 national record in the semifinal while Lee stayed in the game with an 8.44/158 beating Iaconio and putting the two in yet another final round. This time, Glidden took his fourth NHRA national event win of the year and 30th overall, with an 8.41/159.85 beating Lee's 8.51/158. This tightened up the points chase considerably, but Bob was still a long shot going into the season finale. At the Ontario World Finals, Shepherd and Glidden qualified #1 and #2 at 8.433/159.17 and 8.465/158.17, respectively. Both won in round one, but Shepherd had troubles and slowed to a 16-second shutoff in round two, sending Andy Mannarino on to the third round. Glidden marched through the field and beat Frank Iaconio in the final. His 8.428/159.85 defeated Frank's 8.55/159, set Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet, and claimed Bob the 1980 NHRA Pro Stock championship. |

Notes: Ran Bristol IHRA 1980 without weight and big motor. Bob Glidden had just sold his Arrow and was running this Fairmont for the first time at Suffolk in April for a match race against Bill Jenkins. It’s not clear if the cars were at legal weight or not, but judging by the times, I would say that they were light. Glidden won the first two races with times of 8.35/158 and 8.37/158. "Grumpy Jenkins" ran his best time in the last race, an 8.51/153 that beat the Fairmont's 8.66/155. Bob liked what he saw in IHRA and supported them by running at Bristol for the Springnationals on May 18. He qualified #5 with an 8.3 run and lasted until the second round when his 8.37 lost to Rickie Smith's 8.19. | There were two different cars that you are making reference to. The car that ran at Suffolk against Jenkins was the old '78 Fairmont that Bob ran because he already sold his Fairmont and the "new' Fairmont wasn't delivered yet. The other part of the info is correct. - Ariel Cordero |

Notes: The Fastest Limited Pro Stock 1981 NHRA with 8.23 National Record. Also set 8.31 National Record at Gators. Also 161.00 at 81 Pomona Winters and 160.14 at 81 Cajuns. Photo from Gators. | Bob entered the '81 season with backing from Firestone and Ford's Motorcraft Division. This was the first time Ford gave any support to Glidden. The season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where Bob was using a 327 cubic inch engine early in qualifying. He made it to the top of the charts and then switched to his trusty 343 cubic inch motor. With that combo, he ran track records of 8.33/163.04 to qualify first. The only car near his in qualifying was Lee Shepherd's at 8.38; everyone else was in at 8.50 to 8.62. Glidden started eliminations by beating Roy Hill with an 8.41/159. In the second round, he beat another Mopar, the Omni of Paul Gentilozzi with an 8.47/159. The semifinals saw Bob take out Frank Iaconio's Camaro with an 8.45/160. This put him into the final against first-time NHRA finalist, Pat Musi. Bob won his 3second NHRA National event with an 8.38/161.00 over Musi's 8.52/159. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob reset the NHRA National record to 8.31 in qualifying. The speed on that run was 162.74, good enough for Top Speed of the meet. He continued to run strong in eliminations, running 8.35/162.16 in the first round, over a fouling Don Coonce and in round two Bob Ingles fouled against him and Glidden moved into the semifinals with an 8.48/160.71. But in the semis, the Fairmont got out of shape and Bob shut down to 10.01/89.99 that lost to eventual winner Iaconio's 8.41/161. Shortly after this, Glidden showed up at Bowling Green, Kentucky for some test runs. What was unusual about this was his engine. A destroked to 370 cubic inch Boss 429 was in the Fairmont. The times on his runs were in the 8.50's with speeds in the upper 150's. The Cleveland engine was back in the car at Green Valley Raceway on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional race. Bob qualified #2 in the eight-car field with an 8.28/162.16 behind Shepherd's 8.26/161. Glidden improved to 8.25/163.63 in his first-round win over Steve Taylor and in the semifinals, a great 8.23 beat Jerry Janke. This set up a Shepherd vs Glidden final for the first time in '81. It was a good final round race as both ran 8.31/163.04, but Glidden won as Shepherd had left a red light on the 'tree. On April 26, NHRA held its Southern Nationals at Atlanta. The Pro categories had eight-car fields. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.44/160.42 behind the Camaros of Shepherd and Iaconio. In round one, Bob's 8.50 beat Warren Johnson and set up a semifinal run with Shepherd. In the Semis, Glidden fouled and Lee won with an 8.49/159. Bob was also at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Englishtown and while he failed to make the finals, he did set Low ET at 8.31. Another win came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again Bob qualified #3 behind Shepherd and Iaconio. A first-round 8.46 beat Coonce and in the semifinals, he ran Shepherd. As always when these two raced, a great race. Bob's 8.44/161.00 beat Lee's 8.45/161. This moved Glidden into the final against surprise finalist, Andy Mannarino. Andy's Firebird was almost a tenth off of Bob's pace, but he picked up to an 8.51 in the final to make it close as Glidden's 8.46/160.14 got him the victory. He would win only one more NHRA National event in '81 and it came at the next race, the Springnationals. There he qualified #2 with an 8.50/159.29 behind Shepherd's 8.46/160. Both would work their way to the final. Bob beat Dave Hutchens in round one, with an 8.52/157.89 and in round two his 8.53/157.61 beat Ingles. He ran Low ET of eliminations with an 8.47 at 158.72 in the semifinals to take out Alban Gauthier's hard running Arrow. Once again it was Shepherd vs Glidden in the final. Shepherd fouled with an 8.51/159 with Bob ran 8.49/159.29 for career victory #34. It was a whole year before victory #35. He came close to winning at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. An 8.97/150.25 qualified #2 behind you-know-who's white Camaro. In eliminations, the Fairmont was the only car that ran in the eights. A first-round an 8.98/149.00 beat Harry Scribner, and in the semifinals, his 8.97/149.75 beat Gordie Rivera. Shepherd and Glidden lined up for the final with Glidden having the edge as Lee's best time in eliminations had been 9.02. Shepherd stayed consistent with a 9.03/149 in the final while Bob set Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.91/151.26. The only problem was, he had left a red light on at the line. Glidden must have been kicking himself for that one. Then came the NHRA Eastern Regional race at Indianapolis. Shepherd and Iaconio did not attend so you would think it was a piece of cake for Bob. It was not to be. First Bob was only able to qualify #2 with an 8.49/159.01 behind Musi's 8.47/163. That was unusual enough, but then in round one, his 8.64/158.45 lost to Mannarino's 8.59/155. Back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Bob used an 8.42/159.85 to qualify #3. In round one he beat Johnson with an 8.53/159.01 and an 8.56/158.73 took out Ingles in round two. This gave fans a Shepherd-Glidden confrontation in the semifinals. Bob was quicker in their race with an 8.50/159.01, but Lee got the win with a quicker-leaving 8.51/158. The two would meet again at Maryland just a few days later for the US Pro Stock Open. It was a sixteen-car field and Glidden beat Ronnie Manchester in the first round, with an 8.56 and in round two another 8.56 beat Musi. Once again Bob ran Shepherd in the semifinals, and once again Lee prevailed with his 8.54 beating Glidden's 8.61. Next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Glidden set a track record 8.31 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 162.45. It tied for Top Speed of the meet and a new track record, but Gauthier ran the number first. Bob was running well. He beat Musi in round one, with an 8.43 and in the semifinals his 8.47/159.85 beat Iaconio. Of course, he met Shepherd in the final. Both had run 8.47 in the semis so it was anyone's race. Glidden fouled and Shepherd got his 13th career win. I believe that it was around this time he got the nickname "Mad Dog." He was at US 131 for the PHR Championships where he ripped off an 8.38 (Low ET) at 159.01 to qualify first. Unfortunately, he fell off to 8.67/135.54 in a first-round loss to Coonce. If that wasn't bad enough, Shepherd went on to win. Next came Indy. Glidden always ran well at Indy. It didn't start so well as he lost an engine in qualifying. After installing another engine the Fairmont's 8.44/161.00 held for the #3 spot. Gauthier broke against him in the first round, and Bob advances with an 8.50/158.17. In round two, Iaconio's Camaro broke on the line and an 8.45/160.14 advanced into the semifinals against John Hagen's Arrow. The two had a close race with Glidden's 8.44 beating John's 8.46. The Texas Camaro was waiting to meet Bob in the final. This time Glidden got beat as Lee's 8.40/160 outran Bob's 8.46/160.14. |

Notes: Number 3. qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.784 and then runner-up to Frank Iaconio at Indy, 7.803 to 7.809. #3 qualifier at first 500-inch pro stock race at the Winters, 7.899/174.08. This car was being built by Don Hardy with the intent to run a 351 Cleveland motor. When NHRA switched to the 500 cubic inch rules format, Ford wanted Bob to run the EXP anyway. Glidden had to shove a Boss 429 into the little 92" wheelbase car and hope for the best. He stated after he retired that it was the worst car he ever drove and that it handled like a fuel altered. Even with his limited experience with the 429 (he had tried a small cubic inch Boss motor in testing in '81) he managed to qualify #3 at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals with a 7.89/174.08. He stayed in the sevens during eliminations, running a 7.94/172.74 over Don Campanello in the first round, and a 7.95/173.41 over Jim Meyer in round two, but going up against Lee Shepherd in the semifinals, Bob fouled. The Gatornationals showed how far behind the Glidden's were with the little car. His mph readings were great, third highest in qualifying at 174.41. But the car wouldn't ET. His 7.97 qualified #9 in the field setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that race, Bob's 8.09/171.75 finished second to Lee's 7.86/175. Things went slightly better in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Glidden's 8.03/174 got past a fouling Frank Iaconio in the first round, and in the semifinal, a 7.89/173 beat Joe Lepone's 8.00/170 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. The EXP was in its first final round appearance, but an 8.02/174.41 performance gave Bob a runner-up finish to Shepherd's 7.81/174. A 7.90 qualified #3 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He beat Andy Mannarino in the first round, but facing Shepherd in the semifinal Bob fouled out. Somehow the car got down the track straight in four runs to win the NHRA Springnationals. This was Bob's only NHRA win of '82. He qualified #2 with a 7.82/175.43. He had a little luck in the semifinals when Warren Johnson fouled away a 7.96 to Glidden's 8.01. But in the final, he met Shepherd again. This time Bob outran the Texas Camaro with a 7.92/170.77 to Lee's 7.93/172. He got another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. An 8.31 qualified #2 and in the first round, an 8.35/162.45 beat Bubba Corzine. In the semifinals, he beat Don Coonce, but his final round 8.30/156.79 lost to Lee's 8.27/164. Glidden made it as far as the semifinals at the NHRA Grandnationals. There he lost a 7.84 to 7.85 decision to WJ. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, a 7.83/177.86 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He ran a 7.94 in the first round, over Mannarino, but an off pace 8.10/154 lost in round two to Lepone. In August, he was at US 131 for the PHR Championships. He ran a 7.83/172.74 to qualify #3. In the first round, a 7.85/173.41 beat Lepone's 7.99/169. But in the semifinals, once again his nemesis Shepherd downed him with a 7.85/174 over Bob's 7.94/173.07. He got his first pole of the year at the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals. Bob ran 7.87 (Low ET) at 174.75 to get the spot. Unfortunately, in the first round, both he and Iaconio ran 7.92 with Frank getting the win at 168 mph over Glidden's hard-charging 174.08. At Indy for the US Nationals, the EXP dipped into the 7.7's for the first time, qualifying #3 with a 7.78. Bob made it into yet another final (his fourth of the year), but this time it wasn't against Shepherd. Iaconio had taken Lee out in the semifinal, so it was Frank facing off against Bob this time. Both ran 7.80's in the final, with the EXP hitting 175.78 to the Camaro's 173. But Iaconio got the win and Bob had to settle for another runner-up spot. Bob qualified third in the eight-car field at Fremont with a best-ever 7.680 at 178.92 for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 3. He beat Lepone's 7.85/172 in the first round, with a 7.70/178.21. In the semifinals, he lost to Shepherd. |

Notes: After a very trying year in '82 with the EXP that was actually built with the intent that there would still be weight factors, Bob was happy to be in a new Hardy-built longer wheelbase Thunderbird. He had only been able to win one race (NHRA Springnationals) in '82 and was looking to do much better in '83. He debuted the car at the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #1 with a 7.826/177.86. A first-round 7.86/174.75 beat Bubba Corzine and a 7.93/166.97 advanced in round two when Lee Shepherd fouled. In the semifinals, a 7.88/176.81 beat Roy Hill and in the final, Bob slowed to a 7.99/174.41 that lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.81/175. At the second NHRA event of '83, the Gatornationals, a 7.74/176.81 qualified #7. He beat Ronnie Manchester in the first round, with a 7.75/175.78 and a 7.80/179.41 in round two, beat Carlton Phillips' 7.88/173. In the semifinal, Shepherd beat his 7.79/175.78 with a 7.66/181. At the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17, Glidden failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He was the first alternate at 7.90/174.41. That was the last time that Glidden would fail to qualify for an NHRA race for a long, long time. At the Cajun Nationals, a 7.77/178.92 qualified #4. A 7.87/176.81 defeated Rickie Smith's similar T-Bird in the opening round. He fell to Iaconio's 7.84/176 in the semifinal with an off-pace,8.01/154.10. Glidden showed up at Columbus with a new Arias/Root aluminum block in the car. The engine weighed 75lbs less than the stock block he had been using. That meant that he could shift 75 lbs towards the back of the car instead of having the weight over the front wheels. Using it, he qualified #2 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.78/177.51. A first-round 7.81 advanced when Roy Hill's Capri broke, and Reid Whisnant fouled against him in round two. Bob motored to a 7.81/177.16 for the win. In the semifinals, he faced Butch Leal, and his 7.85/177.51 beat Leal's 7.92/173. He was up against Iaconio in the final. The two reversed the outcome of the Winternationals with Bob's 7.79/178.21 (Top Speed) taking the victory over Frank's 7.83/174. This was his 36 NHRA National event victory. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Glidden set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.72/179.64. Unfortunately, he fouled against Don Coonce in the opening round. He was the #3 qualifier at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.75/179.28 (Top Speed and a track record). A first-round 7.79/177.51 advanced over a fouling Rickie Smith, but in the second round, he shut off with tire shake, and he slowed to 11.78 in a loss to Leal's 8.04. He won the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. There he qualified #1 at 8.14/172.41. Don Coonce fouled against him in the first round, and Bob advanced with an 8.16/170.77. In the semifinals, his 8.11/172.41 beat Warren Johnson's 8.21/168. In the final, he was up against Shepherd. Glidden reset both ends of the track record with an 8.08/173.07 to get the victory over Lee's 8.15/167. He made it two in a row when he also won the NHRA Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. A 7.78/177.88 qualified #3, but he beat Bob Ingles in the first round, and his 7.90/176 beat Dave Hutchens in round two. He cut a great light in the semifinals, and his 7.89/176.12 beat Shepherd's quicker 7.86/171. This put him into the final against Iaconio. Once again, a sharp light combined with a 7.87/176.47 beat Frank's slightly quicker 7.85/176. Bob got three when he also picked up the NHRA US Nationals victory at Indianapolis as if two in a row weren't enough. He led the first day of qualifying with a 7.75/179.28 on Friday. He then came back out and ran 7.72/180.36 before finally taking the pole with a 7.69/180.72. His 7.75/180.00 in the opening round defeated Don Coonce's 7.87/180. Bob's 7.75 in round two advanced over a fouling Jerry Eckman. In the semifinals, both he and Iaconio ran 7.74 (Bob at 180.00), with Glidden getting the win light. This set up yet another Shepherd vs. Glidden final. Bob took the victory with a track record 7.68 at 180.36 over Lee's 7.71/181. The next NHRA event was the Golden Gate Nationals held at Fremont on October 2. This was an eight-car field, and Glidden qualified #3 with a 7.67/180.72 behind those pesky Camaros of Iaconio and Shepherd. But in the first round, Glidden was upset by Roy Hill, who ran 7.82/177 to beat Bob's 7.81/178.57. Bob always ran well at the NHRA World Finals, no matter where they were held. In '83, OCIR hosted the season final. He qualified #5 with a 7.69/182.18. The speed was good enough for a new NHRA record. He got some payback over Hill in the opening round, where his 7.75/179.64 trailered the Capri's 7.81/178. In round two, he took out the lone Mopar in the field, Reid Whisnant's Charger, with a 7.71/179. But he was late off the line in the semifinal, and his 7.664/180.36 lost to eventual winner Johnson's 7.71/178. Still, the '83 season was a huge improvement over his '82 season, and he ended up finishing third in the NHRA Pro Stock points chase. |

Notes: Glidden had a rough couple of years, but he started to get the handle on his Boss 429 engines in '84. The season started slowly, but he really picked up as the year went on. It began at Pomona, where he qualified #4 with a 7.72. He beat Johnny Dowey in the first round, and in round two, his 7.82 beat Joe Lepone's 7.85. Unfortunately, he fouled against Lee Shepherd in the semifinals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #2 behind Shepherd with a 7.66/181.45. He faced Roy Hill in an all-Ford first-round matchup, and Hill won with a 7.87 over Bob's late 7.81/175.43. In April, he had another semifinal finish at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. He qualified #7 with a 7.81/177.86. He got lucky in the first round, when his ailing 8.04 advanced over Gordie Rivera's off pace 8.90. In the second round, he picked up to 7.74/178.92 to beat Lepone's 7.85/176. But once again, it was Shepherd who stopped Glidden in the semis with a 7.83 to Bob's shut off 13.14/57.35. It was the same story at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals; Glidden made it to the semifinals, where he fouled against Shepherd but ran his best speed of the year at 182.92. Bob qualified #5 with a 7.72/182.18. The T-Bird continued to show strength by qualifying #1 at the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan, with a track record 7.68 at 180. It was an eight-car show, and Bob reached the finals by getting past a fouling Don Campanello and then Andy Mannarino in the semifinals with a 7.83. In the final, he came up against #2 qualifier Frank Iaconio. Frank got the jump off the line, and his 7.72/178 held off Glidden's quicker and faster 7.68/179.28 for the win. Bob was going into the NHRA Springnationals in June as the favorite. After all, he had won the event for the past five years, back to '79. He looked good in qualifying, running 7.71 for the #2 spot, but he only lasted until round two, where he fouled against Gene Fasching. He made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals in Canada on July 1. He qualified #4 with a 7.70/180.72 and, in the semifinals, got a measure of satisfaction by beating Shepherd's 7.75 with a holeshot and a 7.78. In the final, he met Warren Johnson. It was a good, close race, with Johnson's 7.68/182 nipping Bob's 7.69/180.72. Glidden didn't have to wait long to get his first victory of the year. It came at Englishtown on July 15 for the NHRA Summernationals. Bob set a 7.67 track record at 180.00 to qualify first. He beat Jerry Eckman, Don Nicholson, and a surprising Sam Carroll in the semifinals with a 7.71. He faced his nemesis, Shepherd, in the final. Bob easily drove away from the Texas Camaro with a 7.71/178.21, beating Lee's 7.77/177. The Glidden team was still feeling pretty good when they rolled into Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He lasted until the semifinals, where WJ's 8.06/171 beat his 8.13/169.81. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Bob set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.70/180.00. But once again, WJ stopped him in the semifinals. If any other car got stronger as the year went on, it had to be Warren Johnson's Olds. These two fought it out at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Bob won the qualifying battle, running 7.64/180.72 for the #1 spot just ahead of WJ's 7.66. Both worked their way to the final, Glidden with a 7.66 over Mannarino, a 7.71 over Iaconio, and a 7.72 in the semifinals over Ken Dondero's 7.82. WJ had about a tenth over Glidden in eliminations, running 7.63, 7.64, and 7.63. So, it looked like WJ would get an easy win in the final. It wasn't so easy, as somewhere along the line, Bob was able to pick up to a 7.65/180.36 that narrowly lost to WJ's 7.63/181. It was a close race. At the NHRA World Finals, it was apparent to all that Bob hadn't just caught up with his 429 program; he was now ahead of everyone else. He got the pole with a 7.64/181.81 (Top Speed) and then ran 7.6s regularly. An opening round 7.66/180.72 beat Gene Fasching while a 7.68/180.36 in round two beat Rickie Smith. He stopped Shepherd's ailing Camaro in the semifinals with a 7.64/181.45. In the final, he ran Butch Leal. A final round 7.615 (Low ET) at 181.81 got the victory over Leal's 7.81/162. It was a dominating performance. |

Notes: Bob didn't run a lot of IHRA events in '84, but he made a few. He was at Rockingham in May for the Pro-Am Championships. He also went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #5 with a 7.69/181. Charlie Peppers fouled against him in round one, and Bob advanced with a 7.62/183.67. But in round two, his 7.64/183.29 lost to Lee Shepherd's 7.60/184. He probably wasn't too happy about attending Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There, he got out of shape and left the track, striking a pole and ripping the front end off of the car. There was minor chassis damage that was severe enough to keep Glidden out of the show. He was not hurt. He did not run another IHRA event until the Fallnationals at Bristol in September. He ran well, qualifying #2 behind Shepherd and lasting until the final before losing to the Texas Camaro. Bob also returned to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open, but he only qualified #15 with a 7.64 and lost in the opening round. |

Notes: Bob had a so-so season in '84, winning the NHRA Summernationals and the World Finals at Pomona, where he really picked up the pace by setting a new NHRA Pro Stock record of 7.61. So, going into '85, the Glidden team was optimistic. Glidden returned to Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, dominating the event. He reset the NHRA record three times before leaving it at 7.53, and he also reset the speed record to 186.87. He was the only Pro Stock car to run 7.5s, which he did on every run. A 7.55/186.87 qualified #1, and his 7.53/185.87 advanced when Roy Hill fouled. In the second round, Gordie Rivera fouled while Bob moved on with a 7.58/177.44. In the semifinals, he beat Ken Dondero's 7.72/176 with a 7.59 at only 171.55. Meeting him in the finals was Warren Johnson. Glidden took his 42nd NHRA National Event victory with a 7.58/184.04 over Johnson's 7.77/179. Everyone expected more of the same at the NHRA Gatornationals, where once again Bob qualified #1, this time with a 7.61/183.97. But in the first round, Glidden's 7.73/157.83 advanced when Don Campanello broke. At the top end of the track, Bob had a door blow off his T-Bird. Glidden had some help in the pits from Rickie Smith, who helped reinstall it. But the opening round also saw Johnson step up from his #2 qualifying 7.63 to a 7.55. No worry yet as Bob beat Frank Iaconio in round two with his own 7.55 at 184.80 (Top Speed). Warren again went 7.55. In the semifinals, Dempsey Hardy fouled, and Glidden advanced with a 7.57/184.50. Once again, Johnson ran his third straight, 7.55, over Rivera to face Bob in the final. Now it was worry time as Johnson had lane choice and an edge in the ET department. Sure enough, he held it in the final, where Warren's 7.60/183 beat Bob's 7.68/170. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Glidden was having trouble as he could only run a best of 7.83/179.35 to qualify #13. Warren was on the pole with a 7.65. Glidden's 7.93/178.35 survived when Iaconio shut off in the first round. Due to Bob's poor qualifying spot, he met Johnson in round two, with Johnson definitely holding the upper hand after a first-round 7.73. But in their match, Bob improved to a 7.72/179.28 to trailer Warren's 7.79/179. Bob improved ever further in the semifinals when his 7.67/180.94 advanced over a fouling Campanello. So, here's the part where Bob wins the race, right? Wrong, Butch Leal, who had only run 7.87 in his semifinal win, is Bob's final-round opponent. Leal gets out and wins for Pontiac for the first time in the NHRA Pro Stock competition with a 7.73/179, stopping Bob's 7.80/167. This was the first time since July of '79 that someone other than Glidden, Johnson, Iaconio, or the late Lee Shepherd had won an NHRA National event. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.58/183.89 qualified #3 behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison car and Johnson. Glidden's 7.67/181.81 advanced in the first round, when Ronnie Manchester fouled, and in round two, his 7.71 beat Hardy, who crossed the centerline. It was a battle of T-Birds in the semifinals, but Bob's 7.68/182.11 took the measure of Iaconio's 7.73/179. It was Johnson vs. Glidden for the final for the third time in four events. But for the second time, Johnson got the victory when his 7.61/178 was too much for Bob's 7.67/183.07. Glidden typically ran well at the NHRA Springnationals, and '85 looked no different when his 7.57 (Low ET) at 181.52 took the pole, but in the first round, he lucked out when Don Coonce fouled because Bob broke and slowed down to 8.76/104.67 to win. The Glidden's installed another engine for round two, but his 7.72/179.42 lost to a quick-leaving Leal, who beat him with a 7.73/178. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Bob's 7.56/184.04 qualified #4. He beat Joe Lepone in round one, with a 7.61/180.36, and in round two, another 7.61 at 182.18 advanced when Manchester fouled. He again fell to Leal in the semifinals who's holeshot 7.66/181 beat Glidden's quicker 7.62/182.33. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he set track records of 7.53/186.25 in qualifying #1. But again, he only lasted until the semifinals. This time, Allen's 7.66/179 beat Bob's 7.72/183. It had to be frustrating after dominating the season opener and not tasting victory since, but the Gliddens got it figured out after Englishtown. They rolled into Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals and showed 'em. A track record 7.94 at 171.10 qualified #1. No one else was in the sevens. An 8.00/166.35 beat Campanello, and in round two, his 7.97/172.08 advanced when Mark Rodenberg fouled. A semifinal 7.96/173.07 took out Allen's 8.03/170, putting Bob into the final against Leal. This was Glidden's show, and in the final, his 7.95/172.74 sent Leal's 8.05/172 packing. This was followed by another victory at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob's 7.61/183.67 qualified #1, and he ran 7.61/184.04 over Rivera, a 7.60/185.18 (track record) over a fouling Leal and 7.57/183.67 in the semifinals to beat Johnson's 7.60/183. He met with Allen in the final, and the two had a close race, with Bob's 7.60-83.29 coming out on top over Bruce's 7.61/180. Glidden had a small hiccup at the Pro Stock Challenge race at Indianapolis. It was an eight-car field of the highest NHRA qualifiers for the last 12 months. Hutchens fouled against him in the first round, and Bob's 7.58/185.03 advanced, but in the semifinals, Glidden fouled away a 7.61/182.85 against eventual winner Allen who won with a 7.59/181. That didn't keep Glidden down as he turned around and won the NHRA US Nationals title the next day. His low qualifying 7.57 (at 185.03) was Low ET. Early 7.53/186.87 national records at Pomona Winters, then reset ET National Record at Maple Grove with a 7.497. |

Notes: Glidden showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with his new T-Bird. On Saturday, he ran a tire shaking 7.71/184.04. In the afternoon, he came out to make another attempt but shut off on the line. His earlier run held on for the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, he faced Warren Johnson; it was probably the best race of the round that saw Warren's 7.53/184.04 beat Bob's 7.55/176.47. Glidden later stated that the car got loose at the top end and that he had to shut it down early. After that dismal showing, things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.49/186.72 to qualify low. Once again, he faced WJ in the first round, but this time /johnson fouled while Bob ran 7.51/183.29 to advance. In round two, the T-Bird shook the tires hard, and his 7.74/183.97 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.69/178. The season's "gamechanger" for Glidden came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 7.54/183.59 behind WJ's 7.53/184. Bob beat Frank Iaconio in round one, and a second-round 7.59/180 took out Joe Lepone. He faced Butch Leal in the semifinals, but after winning their race, he popped the chutes, and the car got out of shape. It got airborne before crashing down and rolling violently. Bob was shaken but unhurt; after he got out of the car, he took off his jacket and hung it over the intake manifold. This was done so no prying eyes could see the work he had done with it. Bob showed up at Baton Rouge with his '85 T-Bird painted with the Cheif Auto Parts, 7/11 colors for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 7.63/183.22 qualified #10, and in the opening round of eliminations, he got out on Dave Hutchens, and his 7.69/181.48 beat Hutchens' quicker,7.68/179. In round two, Glidden's 7.73/181.82 fell to Reid Whisnant's 7.69/178. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus. Bob's 7.60/181.19 qualified #7 and a 7.81/174.45 in the opening round lost to Dempsey Hardy's 7.74/173. Things went slightly better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where a 7.54/183.89 qualified #2 behind WJ's 7.51/185. Another 7.54 at 183.22 beat Hardy's 7.73/180 in round one, but a 7.56/185.11 lost to Hutchens' 7.57/181 in round two. At this point, Glidden was way down in fifth in the NHRA Pro Stock points chase. WJ was leading by a long shot. | Set the national record at 7.443 at 1986 Summernationals, then reset the national record with an unreal 7.377 at Indy. Photo from Milan, MI, 1986. |

Notes: Glidden did not race at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as it was run on the same day as the NHRA Gatornationals, and Bob competed there. He made up for it by winning the second IHRA race of the season, the Bayou Nationals. There, he qualified #2 behind Bruce Allen, and in the final, he defeated Roy Hill. In May, he had nothing but bad luck at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. The car made all kinds of power, but tire shake kept him from qualifying for the sixteen-car field. Glidden could keep a handle on it long enough to qualify #6 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 7.51 at only 171.75. He improved to 7.44/187.11 in round one to beat Billy Ewing's 7.69/178. But the car got out of shape in round two, and Bob shut it down against Bob Olson, who advanced with a 7.70/178. He finally got the car dialed in at St. Louis on June 22 for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Glidden reset both ends of the track record in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 7.32/193.13. On Sunday, he made four passes between 7.36 and 7.39 to win. He stopped Chuck Aronson in round one, Charlie Peppers fouled against him in round two, and he took out Rickie Smith in the semifinal. He faced Hill in the final once again, and his 7.39/189.47 beat Hill's 7.59 for his second IHRA victory of the year. His third came at the next event, the Northern Nationals held at Milan Dragway on July 6. Bob led qualifying by almost a tenth of a second. His 7.29/193.96 got the pole ahead of second-place Allen's 7.38. No one was able to run 7.3s in eliminations except for Glidden. A 7.36/191.89 beat Barry Shirley's 7.64/184 in the opening round. His 7.37/193.96 beat Ewing in round two, and in the semifinal, he beat Smith with a 7.35. He faced Darrell Alderman in the final, and the Camaro broke. Glidden ran 7.41/191.89 for another victory. The wins continued at Edgewater Park for the IHRA Summernationals. Once again, he had almost a tenth on the field as his pole-winning 7.37/189.47 led Hill's #2 qualifying 7.48. Again, no one else was able to run 7.3's in eliminations. Bob reset the track record in the first round with his 7.36/189.47 that beat Aronson. Olson fouled against him in round two, so he "only" ran a 7.41/188.67 to advance. Alderman broke against him in the semifinal, so Bob's 7.38/189.07 moved into the final. It was another all-Ford final as he faced Smith's Mustang. Bob's 7.38/189.87 (new track speed record) defeated Smith's 7.52/185. Considering how busy Bob was in NHRA competition with a totally different combination, it was amazing that he could run so well in IHRA competition. He was brought back to earth at the PHR Championships held on August 3. He made one unofficial timed run of 7.34/183. In actual qualifying, the best he could do was 7.48/186.72 for the #3 spot in the field. in the opening round, his 7.55/184.42 beat alternate Leroy Roeder. But that dreaded tire shake returned in round two, and he had to abort his run against Barry Shirley. Barry ran 7.76/177 to advance happily. The other IHRA racers knew that was just a chink in the armor, but Glidden lost again at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1, but the ailing T-Bird lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.70/177 in round one. He continued to have trouble at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open held on September 7. He ran a great 7.21 to lead the field, but tire shake did him in once again. He fell to Dean Goforth in the first round. Glidden fans didn't need to worry. He was back in the game at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. A race within a race was being held as Hurst sponsored the Pro Stock Shootout to be run the day before the Fallnationals. This race was for the eight teams that qualified the best at the IHRA events over the year. On Friday, Glidden ran 7.26 and 7.24 to show everyone he was ready. On Saturday, he opened eliminations in the Shootout with a 7.29/192.71 to drop Ewing's 7.57/185. Olson fouled against him in the semifinal, and Bob's 7.27/191.89 moved on. No one had run better than 7.41 in eliminations, and it was Ruth who had run that time. That was who Bob would meet in the final. Ruth gambled on the tree and lost as Glidden ran 7.29/192.30 for the victory and the $15,000 that went with it. So on Sunday, he came into the IHRA Fallnationals as the low qualifier with his 7.26/193.96. He reset the track ET record in the first round with a 7.25 at 193.96 to beat Shirley's 7.66/180. In the second round, his 7.35, while shutting off at 173 (!), beat Hill's 7.54. In the semifinal, his 7.30/190.27 defeated Terry Adams' 7.49/185. There was a new contender that everyone had their eyes on that would face Bob in the final. Buddy Ingersoll's turbocharged V6 Buick had beaten a not-too-happy Smith in the semifinal with a 7.33/192. Bob kept all the big cubic-inch fans happy in the final with a 7.28/193.96 that stopped the Buick's 7.37/189. It should also be mentioned that Glidden had also reset the track speed record earlier with a 194.38. That was the last time Bob ran the big engine in 1986 competition. |

Notes: This was a great season for Glidden. He started the year by running 7.425/186.76 to qualify first at Pomona (he qualified #1 at all the NHRA races in '87). He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.65/180.43 before losing to Butch Leal's 7.52/183 in the second round with a quicker but later 7.45/186.60. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.41/186.21 got him the #1 spot in the field. He beat a fouling Steve Schmidt in the first round with a 7.40/187.96, and in round two, his 7.44/187 beat Jerry Eckman. Bob set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.39/187.96 while beating Darrell Alderman, but after the run, he found a cracked cylinder head. The team pulled engines and installed a new one for the final against Leal. Unfortunately, Bob fouled in the final, handing Butch the victory. The next event was the NHRA Winston All-Star race at the Texas Motorplex. The non-points race featured only eight-car Pro fields. Of course, Glidden qualified #1 with a track record 7.318 at 189.55. Bob beat Leal's 7.40/186 with a 7.33/189.67 (Top Speed) in the first round, but in round two, both he and Joe Lepone Jr. ran 7.46 (Glidden at 187.85), with Lepone getting the win light. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.38/187.96 got him his customary #1 spot in qualifying. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.37/188.36 while beating Don Coonce in round one, and a 7.43/187 beat Warren Johnson in round two. Another 7.43/187.26 beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/185 in the semifinals. This put Bob in the final against Leal again. Glidden was not to be denied his 53 career NHRA victory, and his final round 7.42/187.46 assured him the win over Leal's 7.49/185. The fourth NHRA race of the season was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge in May. The #1 qualifying spot was taken by a 7.51/189.99 (Top Speed). He set Low ET and a track record 7.45 at 186.64 in the first round while taking out Tony Christian. His 7.52/185.75 beat a tire-shaking WJ in the second round, but a semifinal 7.58/189.91 lost to Leal's 7.52/184. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, setting both ends of the track record with 7.49/186.33 times to get the spot. An opening round 7.50/184.91 defeated Don Campanello's 7.69/182. In round two, his 7.52/185.10 took out Stan Mizell's 7.65/181, and another 7.50/185.41 beat Allen's 7.65/182. He faced #2 qualifier Leal in the final, and Glidden racked up his 54th victory with a 7.50/185.29, beating Leal's 7.63/180. It was interesting to note that while he was obviously doing great in the NHRA competition, he was also running every other weekend in IHRA and regularly winning there, too. The NHRA Grandnationals didn't go so well. He qualified #1 at 7.51/186.41 (Low ET and Top Speed). In the first round of competition, his 7.61/184.76 lost to Nick Nikolis' 7.60/181. At the NHRA Sumernationals, Bob's track record 7.42 at 186.33 earned him the pole. That made it a full year since anyone but Glidden qualified #1 in NHRA Pro Stock. The last time anyone else qualified #1 was at the NHRA Grandnationals in '86. In the opening round, he ran 7.50/184.95 to take out Leal's 7.57/182, but in round two, a quick-leaving 7.67/181 by Jerry Haas beat his 7.60/184.76. Reher and Morrison debuted a new Beretta for driver Bruce Allen at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an effort to stop Glidden's domination. Bob still got his 16th straight #1 qualifying spot with a 7.88/175.47 (Top Speed), but Allen's new car qualified #2. These two would meet in the final. Bob started his drive by running 7.93/174.01 over Nikolis. A round two 7.93/173.41 stopped Kenny Delco, and in the semifinal, his 7.92/173.34 beat Leal, who fouled. The Chevy vs. Ford final was great, and Bob pulled off career victory number 55 with a 7.87 (Low ET) at 171.55 in beating Allen's 7.99/173. Brainerd was the next event on the NHRA schedule for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob got his customary #1 spot with a 7.49/184.99 in qualifying. Once again, Allen was #2 but half a tenth back at 7.55. These two would once again battle it out. Bob beat Leal in the opening round. Then he ran 7.47/185.45 in round two over Darrell Alderman. The car went into heavy tire shake in the semifinal, but Bob drove out of it, and his 7.58/184.31 narrowly beat Warren Johnson's similar 7.58/182. So, facing Allen in the final, Bruce got lane choice due to his 7.57 semifinal win. The two had a great race that saw Allen's 7.53/183 win over Bob's 7.58/181.34. At Indy, there was a race within the race as NHRA ran the Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge. This race only allowed the top eight qualifiers over the last 12 months to complete. Glidden was the #1 seed coming into this event. His 7.43/190.59 beat WJ's 7.54/187 in round one. He almost duplicated those times in the semifinal, with his 7.43/190.39 taking out Leal's 7.55/184. Once again, he faced the Beretta of Allen in the final. Bob won the event with a final 7.54/188.16 over Bruce's 7.64/184. Photo from Indy 1987. He Ran 7.318 best time at the Ennis All-Stars race, but records were not set at that race. Bob then set the national speed record at Indy 191.32, then the ET record twice: Chief Nats (7.354, 7.352). Bob ran 7.519/186.41 at NHRA Baton Rouge Cajun Nats 1987. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Glidden almost became the first driver in a doorslammer to reach 200 miles per hour when he ran 199.11 at Darlington in March 87. Bill Kuhlmann ran 202 at the same race in Top Sportsman to become the first doorslammer over 200. Ran 7.287 Rockingham Fall. | Bob really had his IHRA engine combination flying in '87. Never sure how big his engine was, it was said to have been between 630 and 678 cubic inch The IHRA season started at Darlington and Bob unloaded with his "small" 500 cubic inch NHRA engine. He ran it in the first qualifying session on Thursday and went 7.49/185. He was still using it on Friday when he came back out and ran 7.48/186. Saturday morning saw the team installing the IHRA motor into the T-Bird. He then ran 7.27/197.80. He came back out later in the afternoon and ran 7.26/194. Finally, on a early evening pass, he carried the front wheels about 600 feet down the track and ran 7.19/199.11. The pass stunned the fans and gave Bob the pole for the race. Unfortunately, in the first round, Glidden encountered severe tire shake that knocked the pin out of fourth gear. He still made a race on it as he had gotten a good leave and was ahead of his opponent, Jim Ruth when he pulled third gear. Bob held it in third as lost as he could before Ruth's 7.72/180 came roaring past for the win. He ran 8.02/163 with no fourth gear. IHRA's next event was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Bob made one unofficial (never crossed the scales) run of 194.38 during qualifying. He lost to Tim Nabors in the first round, due to tire shake again. |

Notes: Set national record twice in 1988: 7.319 at Seafair Nats, then 7.277 at Super Nats. Also, 7.318 at IHRA Ennis. Just heard of Glidden's passing (December 2017). It's hard to believe. Because of him, I became interested in drag racing. He was an amazing, hard-working individual. So, I had to do a Glidden entry. After a great'87 season, Bob followed it up with another championshipin'88. The season didn't start well for the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. It started OK when he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.39/189.27, but he was upset by Morris Johnson Jr. in the first round. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where his 7.376/188.67 qualified #1. A first-round 7.39/187 beat a fouling Carlos Gonzalez, and a 7.45/187 in round two beat Terry Adams. He moved into the final by running a 7.42/187 in the semifinals to beat Tim Nabors. In the final, he was up against the Ford mountain motor of Rickie Smith. The two Motorcraft-backed T-Birds had a good battle, but Smith's 7.39/190 came out on top over Bob's 7.43/185.56. At the IHRA Supernationals, he qualified #4 and ran 7.47 and 7.56 to meet Smith in the semifinals. Once again, Rickie had Bob's number, with a 7.41/189, beating Glidden's 7.49/187. He had more bad luck at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where he only qualified #11 with a 7.40/189.31. Bob smoked the tires in the first round and shut down to a 7.67/177 loss to Kenny Delco. He qualified #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.47 (Low ET). Bob lasted until the second round before he got out of shape and shut off against Tony Christian. Bob then won the IHRA Texas Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.31/189.43, and in round one, his 7.36/187 beat Gonzalez. In the second round, a 7.32/187.03 beat Adams' 7.42/186, and in the semifinals, he reset IHRA's record to 7.30 at 189.27 while beating Smith's 7.33/190. A final round 7.31/184.50 sewed up the victory over Tim Nabors' 7.36/188. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, a 7.46 qualified # with a 7.46, and had the top speed of the meet at 188.29. But after beating Alban Gauthier in the first round, he again lost to Christian in round two. It was then off to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Glidden qualified #2 and lasted until round two, where his 7.54/184.27 lost to Johnson Jr.'s holeshot 7.58/182. NHRA's fifth race of the year was the Cajun Nationals in Baton Rouge. Johnson Jr. stopped Bob in round two. Another win came at the IHRA Summernationals at Atco. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.316 190.27. Bob beat Dempsey Hardy in round one, and in round two, his 7.37/187.89 beat Delco's 7.47/185. A semifinal 7.36/187.89 took out Frank Iaconio and set up another all Motorcraft T-Bird final with Rickie. Bob got the victory with a 7.37/187.50 over Smith's 7.46/188. It was surprising that Glidden hadn't reached the semifinals in the first five NHRA races, but he changed all that at the Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.44 and beat Johnson Jr. in the first round and Nick Nikolis in round two. This put him in the semifinals for the first time in '88, where he faced Joe Lepone Jr. A 7.46/186 put Joe on the trailer, and Bob moved into the final, where he met Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison Beretta. Bob set Low ET of the meet with a final round 7.42 at 188.08 to beat Allen's 7.49/186. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 7.37/188.75 qualified #2. But in the first round, the car got out of shape, and Bob lost to Christian. The shit hit the fan at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Bob qualified #2 with a 7.47, behind Allen's 7.46. After hitting the scales after a qualifying run, one of the IHRA officials told Glidden that they would pull a head and check for nitrous. Bob said that was fine and to meet him at his trailer to do it. The official said no, that they were going to do it right there. There was no way Glidden was going to pull a cylinder head at the scale in front of all the Pro Stock teams. Once again, he stated he would gladly let them pull the cylinder in his trailer. At this point, another official walked up and told Bob to leave and not come back. So, Glidden and his family started packing up to leave. Just before they were ready to pull out, another official came by and said that they decided to check the engines in the trailers. Glidden told him it was too late and that they were leaving. Glidden was not alone; the Reher and Morrison team also packed up and left after being asked to pull a head at the scales. The owner and president of IHRA, Billy Meyer, was asked why he thought the top two qualifiers left, and he responded, "They were probably cheating." Both teams were banned from any further IHRA events in 1988. Later, Meyer denied saying that and said, "There's doubt in my mind they weren't cheating." It was a bold move by Glidden to pull out, since his sponsor, Motorcraft, also sponsored the race. Bob would never race at another IHRA event. He had 20 victories in IHRA competition and was the organization's '86 Pro Stock world champion. After that fiasco, he went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He ran Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.3 at 188.1 mph. In round one, a 7.49 beat Dempsey Hardy, then beat Delco and Mark Pawuk to reach the final. He ran Jerry Eckman in the final, and Bob's 7.46/185.91 got the victory over Eckman's 7.54/183. Another win followed at Seattle early in August for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #1 with a track record (and NHRA record) of 7.31 at 189.59 (Top Speed). He ran 7.3s throughout eliminations. A 7.35/189 beat Eckman in round two, and a semifinal 7.37/188 beat Butch Leal. This time, his final-round opponent was Warren Johnson. Bob took the win with a 7.37/188.52 over Johnson's 7.42/186. Notes: Photo from 1989. Bob debuted his Probe in October at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. To say that it was successful was an understatement. Glidden set a 7.27 NHRA national record in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was a new track record 189.95. On top of that, he went on to win his 66th NHRA victory. He started his trip into victory circle with a 7.44/185.26 over Harry Scribner. A second-round 7.40/186.56 beat Bruce Allen's 7.45/185 and in the semifinals, Frank Sanchez fouled against him and a 7.54/189.07 moved Bob into the final. There he faced rival Warren Johnson and WJ almost spoiled the Probe's debut. Glidden left first in the final and his 7.33/189.07 just nipped WJ's quicker 7.31/188. He also won the next NHRA event, the Fallnationals held at Firebird Raceway. Once again, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.44/186.68. After a fairly easy first-round, he beat Butch Leal in round two with a 7.50/185 and in the semifinals, his 7.45/186 stopped Allen. One more time, the final featured WJ and Glidden. This time Bob's 7.44/186.48 beat WJ's 7.47/186. The only thing Bob didn't get there was Top Speed as Allen managed to get that. The season ended back at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals. Glidden didn't get the pole as his 7.38/188.90 (Top Speed) was just a tick behind WJ. He beat Gordie Rivera's 7.50/186 in the opening round with a 7.45/187.73 and in round two, his 7.42/187.77 took out Leal. But in the semifinals, he lost to a holeshot by Morris Johnson Jr. That saw his 7.41/187.81 lose to Morris's 7.46/185. Still, two wins out of three events in the Probe was pretty successful in anyone's book and he nailed his fourth straight NHRA Pro Stock Championship and ninth overall. |

Notes: Bob had one of his best seasons ever in '89. It started by winning the Winternationals at Pomona. Although he only qualified #5 with a 7.36/188.63, he ran a first-round 7.30/188.63 over Mark Pawuk, a 7.31/188 in the second round over Don Beverley, and a semifinal 7.33/188.08 beat Warren Johnson's 7.37/187. He improved to a meet's best of 7.29/188.71 (Low ET & Top Speed) in the final over Frank Iaconio. Another win came at the next event, the NHRA Supernationals. There, he qualified #2 with a 7.29 and ran another 7.29 over Iaconio in the first round. A second round 7.31 beat Butch Leal, and in the semifinals, he improved to a 7.26/189.71 over Bruce Allen's 7.29/188. In the final, he met with upstart Morris Johnson Jr., and in taking the win, Bob set a new NHRA record of 7.25/190.07 (Top Speed). Glidden set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at the Gatornationals. He was running well and met and beat WJ in the second round with a 7.34/188 to Warren's 7.42. But in the semifinal, he ran Darrell Alderman, and they both ran 7.38s, but the Dodge won. He once again set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at the Southern Nationals, with a 7.34/188.24. On his way to another win, he beat Pawuk, Whisnant, and Larry Morgan in that order. His semifinal win over Morgan was close, with a 7.40/186.06, just beating Morgan's 7.41/186. In the final, he took on Bruce Allen and scored a final round 7.35/186.99, which won the match over Bruce's 7.42/185. He won his fourth race in the fifth race of the season, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.28 at 190.07. He beat Allen in the first round with a 7.29, and in the second round, a 7.33/189 beat Rickie Smith. In the semifinal, Bob's 7.30/189 beat Alderman's Dodge. In the final, he was up against arch rival WJ, and a final round 7.28/189.67 got the win over Warren's 7.37. At the next event on the tour, the Cajun Nationals, Bob got beaten by Ken Koretsky in the first round, after qualifying #3 with a 7.43/185.22. He wasn't down for long as he came back to win his fifth race of the season at the Springnationals. There, he set a track record of 7.35 in qualifying and the meet's Top Speed at 187.07. He ran 7.39/186 over Morgan, 7.38/185 over Beverley, and a semifinal 7.41/186 over Pawuk to reach the finals against Joe Lepone. Bob took the win with a 7.41/185.95 over Joe's 7.49/183. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals, where Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.35 at 186.79. He beat Jerry Eckman in the first race with a 7.38/185.07, but he fouled away a 7.43/185.22 in the second round against Iaconio, who ran 7.48/185 for the win. The next stop was Englishtown for the Summernationals. Again, Bob qualified #1 with a track record of 7.34/188.75. Unfortunately for Bob, in the first round, Leal pulled a holeshot that Glidden couldn't catch, and Bob lost for the second time this season. He rebounded nicely by winning his sixth race at the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #1 with a track record of 7.83 at 175.60. Bob beat WJ in the first round, and a 7.84/175 beat Lepone in round two. A semifinal 7.83/175 took care of Allen's Beretta and another 7.83/175.23 beat Eckman's 7.93 in the final. The next stop on the tour was the California Nationals. He used a 7.33/188.79 (Top Speed) to qualify #3 in the field. In the first round, he ran another 7.33 at 188.12 to beat Pawuk. In round two, a 7.37/187.30 beat Koretsky, and a semifinal 7.37/187.38 beat Smith. In the final, Glidden met WJ, and a 7.33/188.16 gave Bob his 74th NHRA National event victory. Seattle was the next stop for the Seafair Nationals. A 7.37/187.11 qualified the Probe in the #5 spot, and a first-round 7.40/185.68 just beat Gary Herman's 7.40/186. He ran another 7.40/185.56 in round two when Alderman fouled. In the semifinal, Allen's 7.37/186 beat Bob's 7.42/185.91. The Northstar Nationals was the next race on the schedule, and Bob got his eighth pole of the season with a 7.44/185.26. He beat Kenny Delco in the first round, and a second round 7.47 beat Morris Johnson Jr's 7.51. In the semifinals, a 7.48 advanced into the final when Iaconio fouled. In the final, he ran Low ET and Top Speed at 7.43/185.98, but he lost to Allen for the second straight event. The US Nationals came next, and Bob got outqualified by the Reher-Morrison team. His 7.35/187.22 was second to Bruce's 7.35/186. Glidden was shooting for his 75th NHRA win and was feeling good about it at Indy. In the first round, a 7.40/186.91 beat Iaconio's 7.43/185. In round two, WJ broke a transmission and Bob motored to another 7.40/186.99 win. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 7.39/187.30 (Top Speed) when Beverley fouled. In the final, he met Morgan and lost to a 7.36/185 by the Olds driver to his 7.42/187.07. He finally got that 75 win at the next event, the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. He qualified #5 with a 7.35/188.00 and a first-round 7.38/187.50, got past a fouling Lee Dean. In round two, a 7.35/187.53 beat Beverley's 7.38/186. In the semifinal, he and Alderman had a close one with Bob's 7.35/187.50 beating the Dodge's 7.36/187. In the final, he met Allen, who wasn't gonna make it easy. Glidden took the win with a 7.36/187.46 to Bruce's close 7.37/186. The next race was the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Bob used a 7.29/188.08 to qualify #3. He beat Nick Nikolis in the first round, with a 7.35/188.32. He was to face Allen in the second race, but Allen had crashed at the top end after winning his first-round race. The Beretta was unable to make the second round, so Glidden got a solo. On the solo pass, he ran another 7.35/187.81. In the semifinal, he met WJ. Johnson got a slight holeshot and took a 7.37/187 victory over Bob's 7.36/187.34. The second-to-last race of the season was the Fallnationals. A 7.42/185.41 gave Bob the #4 spot in the field. He beat Don Coonce in the first round, and a 7.40/185 beat Kenny Delco in round two. He won a close one over his rival WJ in the semifinal with Glidden's 7.41/185 beating WJ's 7.42/185. In the final, he ran Alderman, and Bob was a bit slow on the tree when Darrell took a 7.42/186 win over the Probe's 7.40/185.98. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Glidden got an award before turning a wheel in '90 when he was awarded the "Racer of the Decade" by Motorweek Illustrated in January. He beat out some heavy competition for the award, including Bill Elliott, Rusty Wallace, Geoff Brabham, Steve Kinser, and Alain Prost. His 49 wins in the NHRA competition during the '80s were impressive. The NHRA season started in February at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Bob qualified #5 with a 7.33/189.27. He beat Stan Mizell in round one with a 7.36/188.04, but in round two, his 7.36/187.73 lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.32/187. He got back into his winning ways at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with track records of 7.28/189.79. A 7.34/187.18 beat Butch Leal's 7.43/185 in the first round, while a 7.35/186.95 in round two took out Kenny Delco's 7.43/185. Jerry Eckman broke in the semifinals against him, and Bob advanced with a 7.40/186.25. He met Gordie Rivera in the final, and a 7.35/185.79 scored Glidden his 77th NHRA National event title over Rivera's 7.41/186. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Supernationals. Bob ran 7.25/190.15 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. Buddy Ingersoll fouled against him in the first round, and Bob's 7.27/189.71 advanced. In the second round, he slowed to 7.30/189.71, which lost to Delco's 7.28/188. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob qualified #8 with a 7.35/187.81. He beat Morris Johnson Jr. in the first round, and a 7.36/188 beat Ingersoll in round two, but he lost to Rickie Smith in the semifinals. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Bob had his worst season in his 19-year career in '91. He made it into two NHRA finals rounds and won once. This was uncharacteristic of a driver that had won an average of four races a year. The season started with Glidden qualifying #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.31/188.63. He faced Bruce Allen in round one, and his 7.35/188.48 lost to the Reher-Morrison driver's 7.30/189. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.38/186.83 qualified #13. He lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. He qualified #13 again at the NHRA Supernationals with a 7.32/189.27. He beat Larry Morgan in the first round, before losing to Scott Geoffrion's 7.25/188 with a 7.27/189.19. His qualifying improved at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 7.24/190.71 to qualify in the top half of the field for the first time this season (#5). A first-round 7.31/187.96 beat car-builder Jerry Haas' 7.38/188. In round two, Bob ran another 7.31 at 188.63 to down Butch Leal's Beretta at 7.42/185. In the semifinals, he ran a strong 7.29/189.51 but narrowly lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.28/188. Still, it was a good showing for the "Motorcraft" team. At Rockingham for the non-points NHRA Winston Invitational, Glidden again ran strong. He qualified #5 with a 7.26/191.69 and a first-round 7.33/188.63 beat Don Beverley's 7.40/187. In the second round, both he and opponent Allen ran 7.35 (Glidden at 188.52), but Bob got the win. In the semifinals, he got revenge on Alderman by beating him with a 7.33/189.75 to the Dodge driver's 7.39/188. This put Glidden into the final against Warren Johnson. It was a close final, but WJ's 7.29/189 got the victory over Bob's 7.30/190.39. Glidden scored his record 80sh NHRA National event win at the Southern Nationals at Atlanta in April. He qualified #3 at 7.29/189.99 (Top Speed). He beat Frank Iaconio in the first round, and a 7.31/189 beat Joe Lepone Jr in round two. He beat the Pontiac of Eckman in the semifinals, and his 7.30/188 outran Jerry's 7.35/185. This put him in the final against WJ. It didn't turn out to be much of a race at WJ fouled and shut off while Bob cooled it with a 7.86/138.35 for the win. Unfortunately, this was Glidden's only win for the year. NHRA's next stop was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Bob showed up with a new clutchless 5-speed transmission and qualified #6 with a 7.33/190.23 (Top Speed). He beat Lepone in the first round, with a 7.32/190.19, but in round two, while ahead of WJ, Bob forgot to pull 5th gear, and his 7.50/170.55 lost to WJ's off pace 7.36/188. The next stop was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 7.35/188.79 qualified #7, and in round one, he used a 7.36/188.52 to beat Joe Folgore's 7.41/185. In round two, a holeshot 7.38/187 by Geoffrion beat his 7.37/188.60. In Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, Bob qualified #7 with a 7.27/190.07. He beat Allen's 7.34/189 in the first round, with a 7.29/188.99. A 7.23/191.04 in round two beat Jim Yates' 7.34/188, and in the semifinals, he had a close one with WJ. A 7.26/189.83 beat WJ's 7.26/190. In the final, he raced Alderman, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 7.21 at a track record speed of 191.16 but still lost to Darrell's 7.20/190. |

Notes: Bob started the season by qualifying #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.28/190.27. He beat Larry Morgan in the first round with a 7.33/189.51. Another 7.33 at 189.87 beat Don Beverley's quicker 7.29/190 in round two. He improved to a 7.29/190.31 in the semifinals, but it wasn't enough to beat Jim Yates' 7.28/190. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.29/190.59 qualified #5, but a first-round 7.34/189.83 lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.26/189. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Glidden qualified #4 with a 7.18/192.30. In round one, he ran 7.19/192.06 beat Paul Rebeschi, but in round two, his 7.22/191.85 lost to eventual winner Mark Pawuk's 7.21/190. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team had a bit of bad luck when the Probe almost rolled off the 12-foot-high platform while unloading the car. Bob's son Rusty tried to stop it and fell, breaking both wrists. After that, it was business as usual. A 7.20/192.76 qualified #9. Bob picked up to a 7.18/192.14 in the first round, but he lost a close one to Pawuk's 7.17/192. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April, and Bob ran well there. He qualified #4 at 7.22/192.18. In the first two rounds, he ran 7.24/192.47 over Rebeschi and 7.23/192.22 over Morgan's 7.22/189. In the semifinals, he lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.25/190 with a 7.29/190.92. Glidden qualified #1 for the first time since the '89 Arizona Nationals at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He got the spot with a 7.21/191.12. A consistent 7.22/191.36 beat Gary Brown in round one, but a 7.26/190.51 in round two lost to Morgan's 7.25/189. He went from first to last when he qualified on the "bump" at the next NHRA race, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. His 7.31/189.95 held down the last spot in the sixteen-car field. He lost to low qualifier Scott Geoffrion's 7.25/192 in the first round, with a 7.30/190.25. The roller-coaster ride continued at the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #1 with a 7.25 (Low ET) at 190.75. In the first round, he beat John Nobile with a 7.29/189.99, but a holeshot 7.36/188 by Rickie Smith beat his 7.31/189.55 in round two. NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the Grandnationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.26/191.32, but the car went into severe tire shake in the first round, and Bob shut off to 9.48/112.17 in a loss to Eckman's 7.58/189. Over the last 12 months, Glidden had earned enough points to qualify for one of the eight positions available for the Budweiser Pro Stock Challenge race run at Englishtown in conjunction with the NHRA Summernationals. Glidden had accumulated 2,290 points to qualify #5 in the Challenge. His 7.33/190.70 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.29/189 in the Reher-Morrison Lumina in the opening round of eliminations. At the Summernationals, he did much better. He qualified #4 with a 7.27/191.20. His 7.26/191.00 beat Nobile in the first round, while an even better 7.25/191.24 in round two took out Rebeschi. In the semifinals, he slowed to 7.30/190.71, losing to eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.25/192. The next stop on the NHRA calendar was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Bob always ran well at Bandimere, and '92 was no different. His son Rusty was also running for the first time and qualified for the field. Bob's 7.66/179.24 gave him the #7 spot in the show, and in the first round, he got out on Allen, and his 7.71/178.07 beat Bruce's quicker 7.68/178. He tried to cut the light again in round two, but he cut it to close and fouled away a 7.72/178.50 while Johnson advanced with a 7.64/181. It was Johnson who stopped him at the NHRA California Nationals as well. There Bob had only qualified #15 with a 7.26/192.10. In the first round, he had a close race with Allen in the first round, which saw his 7.25/191.16 beat Allen's 7.26/190. In the second round, he slowed to 7.33/190.59, but it was still enough to trailer Yates' 7.36/188. But in the semifinals, Warren's 7.22 stopped Glidden. |

Notes: Ran 194.51 at Houston Spring. | Bob started the '93 season by qualifying #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.22/191.61. He advanced past the first-round with a 7.22/191.53 when his son Rusty Glidden broke on the line. In round two, his 7.28/172.84 lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.23/191. At the second NHRA race of the season, the Arizona Nationals, a 7.25/190.23 qualified #6 in the field. In the first round, both he and opponent Scott Geoffrion ran 7.24 (Bob at 190.88), but the Dodge got the win. Glidden's next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Bob qualified #2 with a 7.07/194.51. He beat Brad Klein's 7.24/188 in the first round, with a 7.16/192.51. In the second round, another 7.16 at 192.43 beat Jim Yates' 7.21/191. He got past a fouling Paul Rebeschi in the semifinals, advancing with a 7.14/192.47. In the final, he was up against Larry Morgan. Both ran strong, but Bob got himself NHRA victory number 83 with a 7.13/193.34 over Morgan's 7.14/192. After winning the last event it was surprising to see Bob's name among the non-qualifiers at the NHRA Gatornationals. Glidden had run a best of 7.17/193.00 in qualifying, but it was good for the second alternate spot for the show. He did much better at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 7.15/194.00 qualified #7 and in round one, he improved to a 7.12/194.59 to beat Joe LePone Jr's'7.19/193. He soloed with a 7.16/193.54 in round two when Morgan was unable to show after crashing in round one. In the semifinals, he beat Yates' 7.22/191 with a 7.17/193.75 to advance to the final. In the final he ran Warren Johnson. Bob ran his slowest time of eliminations, a 7.24/192.22 that lost to WJ's 7.12/195. |
