Notes: Fred Goeske came to fame as the second owner of the B&M Plymouth Dealers Barracuda in late 1966. Goeske raced the heavy stock rear-engine car until the end of 1967. His season started at Irwindale's New Year's FC race. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the tough eight-car field. At the AHRA Winternationals on January 29, Fred ran 8.94 in the first round, but he lost to Roger Wolford's 8.91. He was back at Irwindale on February 19 for its Factory Showdown race. An 8.83/180.36 in the opening round beat Doug Nash's 9.50/145 Bronco. In the semifinal, Jim Liberman lost fire in the "Brutus" and Goeske's 8.72/182.54 advanced. In the final, he faced Eddie Schartman's Comet. Fred got crossed-up and shut off while Eddie ran 8.71/170 for the victory. On March 19, he qualified #6 for an eight-car show at Carlsbad with an 8.88. He improved to 8.56/181.80 in round one to defeat Pete Gates' Comet, but in the semifinals, despite running a career-best (to this point) of 8.48/184.20 (Top Speed), he lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 8.45/164. He won the "heavy" (2400 lbs.) funny car category at the 4th Hot Rod Magazine Championships at Riverside, CA, in April 1967. His 8.69/183.28 qualified #1, and his 8.72/186.72 (Top Speed) won over Gas Ronda's 9.06/162. In June, Goeske was at Fremont to take on Doug Thorley's new Corvair in a best of three match race. In their first race, Fred ran 8.65/185.56 to beat Doug, who broke a couple of valves. The Corvair was done for the day, and Goeske wanted to make another run and try to top 190. Unfortunately, a blown head gasket held him back to 8.82/168.85, but he won the match. Fred also ran 8.31 at the Lions Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA, 11/25/67. |

Notes: In 1968, Fred ordered a new funny car to be built by Ron Scrima and Pat Foster at Exhibition Engineering. The'68 Barracuda was more traditional than the one it replaced. Still sponsored by the Plymouth Dealers Association of Southern California, Goeske called it the Hemi-Cuda II. The car debuted with a win at Lions Drag Strip, and Goeske was the hottest funny car in Southern California for the next couple of months. Fred ran a best of 7.78 at 191.88 with the car. A 426 late-hemi powered this car with a B&M Torqueflite. |In one of Fred's earliest races with the car, he faced Dick Harrell for a best-of-three match at OCIR. In their first race, the 'Cuda's 8.57/173.07 beat the Camaro's fouling,9.13/168. Hareel evened the score in the second race as he got out first, and his 8.17/173 held off Goeske's 8.20/178.92. Goeske then beat Harrell in the final race to win the match. Fred faced off against Charlie Allen in a best two out of three match race at Irwindale on January 28. He won the first race with an 8.33/174.41 when Allen's Dart had the steering fail. Fred soloed with another 8.33 to win the second race and the match while Charlie repaired his Dart. Allen did manage to win the third race with an 8.82 ousting Goeske's out-of-shape run. He was at Lions on February 24 for the Funny Car Spectacular. Over 50 cars tried to qualify for the sixteen spots. Fred ran an 8.18 to qualify #6. He picked up to a 7.86/180 in the first round, over Rich Hammons, and in round two, a 7.95/174.41 beat Jack Chrisman's 8.11/176. He took it easy in the semifinal, needing only an 8.98/159.17 to win when Rusty Delling blew his motor in the "New Breed" Firebird. In the final, he faced off against Steve Bovan's Camaro. Unfortunately for Bovan, he lost a transmission, and Goeske motored to an 8.34/171.10 victory. The next day (February 25), he was at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An off pace 8.66/143.76 lost in the first round, to Lew Arrington's 8.00/184. On March 3, he was at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale. Thirty cars attempted to qualify, and Fred managed to qualify #15. He beat Dick Loehr in the first round, with an 8.03/182.18, but the "Hemi-Cuda" came to the line ailing in round two. An 8.73/159.01 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.18/171. He did win Funny Car eliminator at the Bakersfield March Meet, running a final round 8.28/181.44 over Norm Cowdrey. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 24, he won his first-round race over Ronnie Runyan with an 8.23, but in the semifinals of the eight-car show, a consistent 8.26 lost to Loehr's 8.07. Fred faced off against Gas Ronda at Irwindale in a best-of-three match race on March 30. He won two straight when Ronda fouled in the first race, and in the second race, the Mustang lost a transmission while Fred ran an 8.02/179.28 to sew up the match. Carlsbad held another Funny Car show on April 7, and Goeske took the win. In the first round, he beat Ronda with an 8.07/171, and a semifinal 8.07/153 beat the Wright Brothers. In the final, he set Low ET at 7.90 while beating Jack Chrisman's Comet. One week later (April 13), he was back in the winner's circle at OCIR over a big field. He advanced past the first round with a 7.89/161.57. In the second round, an 8.07/150 beat Hayden Proffitt. In the semifinal, he had a good race with Loehr's Mustang. His 7.93/179.65 beat Dick's 8.04/182. He ran a 7.91/177.51 for the win in the final, but he didn't need t,o as Cowdrey had broken on the line. Their roles were reversed on April 28 at Irwindale. It was an eight-car field, and Goeske and Cowdrey again met in the final. The "Hemi-'Cuda" started its march to the final by beating Runyan's 8.48/170 with an 8.27. Fred got a single in the semifinal when Gene Ciambella lost fire, and he advanced with a 7.97. In the final, Goeske set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.90/182.18, but it was accompanied by a red light, giving Cowdrey the victory. On May 4, he raced at OCIR's Funny Car Team Championships. He didn't reach the finals, but he ran well. Another race at OCIR on May 18 featured Funny Cars vs. Fuel Altereds. All cars were to run three races. Fred won all three of his races, running 7.85/184.04 over Sush Matsubara, 8.07/180.72 over Randy Bradford, and finally 8.12/180.72 to beat Willie Borsch. He was at Irwindale for a best-of-three match against Allen on May 23. He won all three races over Charlie's ailing Dart. Times were 7.99/183.28 over Allen, who not only fouled but lost a transmission as well. In the second race, an 8.12/177.46 beat the Dart's ailing 8.64/120. And to sew it all up, a final 7.99/181.44 defeated Charlie's way-off pace 8.81/114. He was at Detroit Dragway for the Midwest Funny Car Championships in June. This was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round, Goeske's 7.85/177.86 beat Dave Pinta. A second-round 7.87/169.49 beat Pat Minick's 8.13/173 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Kelly Chadwick fouled against him in the semifinal,s advancing into the final against Roger Lindamood. Goeske scored the victory with a 7.84/181.44 over a troubled Lindamood at 9.80-98. He then won a Funny Car race at Union Grove on July 4, setting both ends of the track record with 7.58/189.86 times. Capitol Raceway held its Supercharged Invitational on July 13, and Fred was there. In the first round, he beat Dick Bourgeois with a 7.84/187.10, but he lost a transmission against eventual winner Larry Reyes in round two. He also competed at the Super Stock Nationals, where he was runner-up to Reyes on Friday with a 7.93/190.66, finishing second to the "Super'Cuda's" 7.70/187. Also, in July, he set both ends at Maple Grove with a 7.81/183.44. He had a bad weekend when he faced Arrington for a best-of-three match at Maple Grove on August 10. Fred Fred lost two straight, and Arrington took his mph record away with a 185.18 run in the second race. The''Cuda was ailing and could only run a best of 8.79. The next day (August 11), he was in Milan for another match race against Loehr's "Stampede." Once again, he lost two straight with times of 9.31/105.14 and 8.85/145.39. — Ron Howard |

Notes: Goeske picked the boxy, unconventional Road Runner body to stand out from the sliced' n' diced Barracudas and Chargers that were prevalent among Mopar floppers. One-off fiberglass body by Contemporary Fiberglass was mounted on a 120" Ron Scrima (Exhibition Engineering) chassis. Stock displacement, Ed Pink-built 426 Plymouth hemi, Hampton blower, Enderle injection, Torqueflite trans. Early feature in 5/69 Speed Age (formerly Drag Strip) noted only shakedown runs on the new car - no times cited. Lou Hart's "Drag Racing Funny Cars of the 1960s" quotes times of 7.65 at 180 mph but incorrectly IDs the engine so that accuracy could be questioned. We also have times of 7.46 at 199, which need to be verified for this year. | Fred faced off against Jack Chrisman for a best-of-three match on April 20 at US 30, Gary, Indiana. He won three straight with times of 7.70/173, 7.63/193, and a final 7.60/197 to sew up the match. At Pittsburgh in July, Goeske set a 7.69 track record. - Ron Howard | Coke circuit ad cited best times of 7.41/198.35 at the time, said he was 3/1 to win the next race. |

Notes: Fred started the year running his 'Cuda from the previous year. It was a good piece attested by his qualifying fifth with a 7.75 out of forty cars trying to make the sixteen-car field at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. He lost in the first round, to Jim Liberman's 7.67/191.08 with a 7.88/184.04. He faced Malcolm Durham at Suffolk on April 13 for a best two out of three match race, but lost the first two races before running a 9.50/159 solo when Malcolm blew a head gasket. |

Notes: Fred debuted his Duster at the Bakersfield March Meet. He beat Charlie Allen in the opening round before losing to eventual winner Mike Snively's 7.63/170 with a 7.85/196.06. On April 1, he was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Division 4 opener. Unfortunately, his tire-smoking 8.22/100.44 in the opening round of eliminations lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 6.72/217 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Fred was at Atco on May 30 for a best-of-three-match race against Kosty Ivanof. In their first race, Goeske ran 7.12/187.89. The ET was a new track record. But in the second race, Fred's engine let go, and his coasting 19.82/33.10 lost to Ivanof's 9.88. Fred was done for the day, so Kosty made a solo 13.02 for the match race victory. Toured the country on the Coke circuit. Burned to the ground at Capitol Raceway. Ran 7.27 at Cecil County. |

Notes: Fred was a regular on the Coca-Cola Cavalcade Funny Car Circuit. On June 28, a Cavalcade race was run at Suffolk, Virginia. Goeske made in into the final by running 7.61 over a fouling Jess Tyree and in the next round, Cliff Zink, who was driving the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang, fouled against him. Fred was lucky in that race as his transmission had gone away. He faced Kelly Chadwick in the final. Fred pulled to the line with the ailing transmission still in the car, hoping that Chadwick would foul. He didn't and Fred had to settle for the runner-up spot. |

Notes: In June, Fred Goeske raced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in a best of three match race at Maple Grove. Fred won the first race with a 7.23/197.80 over Jim's 7.24/190, but Liberman evened the score in the second race with his 7.11/199 beating Goeske's 7.13/188.67. Liberman won the match with a final 7.27/175 that beat Fred's sleepy 7.13/189.47. |

Notes: On July 25, Goeske was at Maple Grove's All-American series race. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round of competition, his 7.04/179.28 fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.52/177. Goeske was back at Maple Grove for its Back to School Funny Car race in Sept. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.68/210 lost to Al Segrini's 6.66/210. But he got back in on the "break rule" as the Low ET loser from round one when Tom Prock had his car burst into flames while winning his race. He made good on his second chance by beating Jake Crimmins' 6.93/196 in the semifinal with a 6.64/216. He faced Al Marshall in the final, and his 7.23 finished runner-up to Al's 6.70. Shortly after that, he was at Epping, New England, for its Funny Car Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Marshall in the first round. Later, he came back out to run Joe Jacono in a consolation race and beat him with a 6.55/216 to Joe's 6.70/196. |

Notes: Goeske was in Portland in July for the Coca-Cola Championships. It was a 32-car show, and his 6.88/146 beat Chuck Tiller in the first round. In round two, he got a solo when Gary Bolger's car failed to fire, and Fred advanced with a 6.64. But in round three, his Vega broke and slowed to a 22.12-second loss to Gordon Mineo's 6.74. Fred was in New England in October for its Fall Funny Car Championships. He smoked the tires against Bill Leavitt in the first round and shut off to 7.30/180. After losing, he came back out and made two passes for the fans, a 6.64/215.82 and 6.49/216.86. Iron block 426. 1974 photo. |

Notes: Iron block 426. Coke Circuit regular. Goeske won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Atco Dragway in May. It didn't appear as if he would as he lost his opening race against Dick Custy. Fred slept a little on the line, and his 6.67/216.86 lost to Dick's 6.74/191. But he got back into the show on the "break rule," and he lined up against Custy again in the semifinals. Goeske ran Low ET and Top Speed at 6.58/222.22 to beat Custy's problemed 8.16/128. Fred beat Tripp Shumake driving the "Sundance" car in the final, and he ran 6.63/213.27 for the victory. On May 23, he was at US131 for the NHRA Division 3 race. There he finished runner-up to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Fred was at Englishtown on June 6 for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He did really well, beating a tire-smoking Al Marshall in Dale Creasy's Mustang with a 6.88/198. A 6.50 in the semifinal beat Shumake's motor blowing 6.58. In the final, he faced Roger Lindamood. Roger got out of shape off the line and shut off while Goeske picked up the win with a 6.84. He then won the Cecil Cavalcade race. There he stopped Lindamood and Dick Bourgeois in the first two rounds with times of 6.57/200 and 6.70/209. In the final, Fred stepped up to 6.52 at 209 to get the win over Shumake. On July 31, he also won the Coke race held at Puyallup, where he final round 6.61/195 got the win when Lindamood broke. The next day, the car became history as it burned to the ground in Portland. Goeske received minor burns in the fire. The car was not to be rebuilt as he was changing over to a rocket-powered car. He won Cecil County and Englishtown Coke circuit races running "6.40s." Listing 6.45 until we can get those exact times. |
