Notes: Goldstein was at Riverside on March 20 for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the opening round, his 7.80/202.70 defeated Ron Matin's 7.96/169. In the semi-final, he fell off to 8.52/196.92 in a loss to Tommy Allen's 7.79/199. The following week (March 26), Leroy qualified #3 a for a sixteen-car show at Lions. In the first round, he nipped James Warren's 7.87/205 with a 7.86/206.88. He then lost in round two. He was back at Lions on April 18 but failed to qualify for the eight-car show. After qualifying ended with a 7.87 bump, Leroy ran a 7.72/196.06, which would have put him in the middle of the field. On May 7, he was back at Lions for another eight-car show. This time, he just made the show with a 7.89/196.97, good for #8. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.50/201.78 that lost to James Warren's 7.63/202. The next day, the Jackpot circuit race found the Crower-Blair team at Carlsbad. Leroy fouled against Bill Leavitt in the first round. On May 21, Lions held one of its weekly eight-car shows. Leroy qualified second with a 7.59, and a second 7.59/207.84 lost to Jeff Bliley's 7.82/196. Goldstein was at Irwindale on June 11 for an eight-car show. Although his 7.71 would have easily qualified, he damaged the engine on the run and could not run eliminations. He was at Carlsbad on June 17 but failed to win and the next day (June 18) found the team at Irwindale where a first-round 7.95/200.00 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60/193. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on June 19, a 7.70/203.16 qualified #21 in the 32-car field. In the first round, he showed his driving talent when his 7.77/200.88 beat Dave Beebe's much quicker 7.52/213. On July 2, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show where he qualified with a 7.68. Unfortunately, he shut off with no oil pressure in the first round. The next day (July 3), he went to San Fernando for another eight-car show. He qualified #3 with a 7.95/197.80 and, in round one, a 7.91/169 beat John Martin. In the semifinals, his 7.92 lost to James Warren's 7.68. Irwindale held an eight-car show on August 20, and Leroy qualified #2 with a 7.73. He won his first-round race with a 7.74/207.84. In the semifinal, a 7.80/196.92 beat Steve Porter's ailing 8.35. He lost to Dwight Salisbury in the final. On August 26, he was a Carlsbad for an eight-car show. He advanced past the first round with a 7.80/203.16, but in the semifinal, Allen's 7.53/190 beat his 7.78/202.24. He was runner-up to Allen at a Jackpot Pro Circuit race at Carlsbad on September 5. His quicker 7.71/210.76 lost to Tommy Allen's 7.76/208 in the final. On September 16, he won an eight-car show at Carlsbad. He beat Jack Jones in the first round, and in the semifinals, Ongais fouled against him. In the final, he got another gift when Allen also fouled. Goldstein ran 7.42/204 for the win. Leroy got himself another big win on September 25 when he won the Fremont Fall Championships. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.17 over Gene Winther, and in the final, he ran a 7.65/215.82 (Top Speed) for the victory. On October 8 at Irwindale, Leroy qualified second with a 7.50. He made it to the final against Larry Faust but broke on the line giving Larry a solo (7.78/168.53) for the win. A week later (October 15), he returned to Irwindale for another eight-car show. He didn't do as well when he lost to Beebe in the first round. He went to Carlsbad the next day and won. In the first round, a track record 7.27 at 214.78 beat Dominic Cardoza while he ran an easy single in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Cardoza again, who had gotten back in on the "break rule." Once again, Leroy won, running 7.37/214.28 for the victory. Goldstein advanced past the first round at the Irwindale Grand Prix race with a 7.49/187.10 when Herb Ries lost fire. In the second round, his 7.77/149.50 lost to Tommy Dyer's 7.72/202. |

The following week (February 19), he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. Leroy lasted until the second round before his 7.39/211.26 lost to Pete Robinson's Ford-powered car at 7.24/208. On March 5, he qualified #1 at Carlsbad for an eight-car show with a 7.12/215.30. The team's next stop was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Over 50 cars showed for the 32-car field, and Goldstein qualified easily. A 7.57/205 advanced in round one, over Bob Mayer, but his car broke, and Leroy could not return for the second round. In April, he was back at Irwindale for an eight-car show where his 7.64 qualified #3. Leroy soloed in the first round when his competition failed to fire, but, in the semifinals, he fouled against Dave Beebe. Goldstein won the AHRA Springnationals at Odessa Dragway on April 16. Dave fouled away a 7.11/215 while Goldstein picked up the win with a 7.40/160.42. A week later (April 23), he was in the final again, this time at a sixteen-car show at Amarillo. Leroy qualified #2 with a 7.36 and improved to 7.28 in the first round to beat Richard Tharp's 7.64 in the Carroll Brothers car. A track record 7.25 in round two beat Gary Bailey while John Wiebe fouled against him in the semifinals. He faced John Wilson in the final, and Goldstein had problems and shut off early, giving Wilson the victory. He went out early the following week at Austin. It was an eight-car show, and he lost to George Rodriquez in the first round. On May 7, Goldstein was at Carlsbad for the NHRA Division 7 race. Leroy went out and ran a 6.97 in the morning. This was after McEwen's 6.97 low qualifying run. Unfortunately, Goldstein lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the first round. Also ran 7.19 at the Bristol NHRA Springnationals. |

Notes: Leroy went 7.066/219.50 to qualify #7 at the Pomona Winternationals. He lost to Ron Rolstad in round one on a holeshot, 7.28/187 to 7.271/216.34. Goldstein was at OCIR on March 3 for the PDA Championships. He lost early in eliminations. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #8 in the 32-car field with a 7.01. In the opening round, his .23/205.46 defeated Pat Foster's 7.70/196. In round two, he used a 7.01/205.46 to eliminate Frank Martinez's 7.26/199. Goldstein had a coasting contest with Bennie Osborn in the third round when both shut-off. Leroy crossed the stripe first. He caught a good light in the semifinal, and his 7.15 beat hometown favorites James Warren's 7.12. The final was between him and Ron Rivero driving the "K & G Speed" car. Unfortunately, the "Weinerschnitzel" failed to fire, and Rivero soloed for the title. On April 6, he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He downed the Chevy-powered car of Bob Brooks in the opening round with a 7.40.26 but lost in the following round. Soon after, Fresno held a twelve-car show, and Leroy qualified #4 with a 7.23. But in the opening round, he fouled and shut down to 10.96/81.81 in a loss to Dan Madigan. The Texas Pro Fuel Circuit ran at Green Valley Raceway on May 11, and Goldstein qualified #3 for the eight-car field with a 7.47/175.09. He lost fire against the "Northwind" in the first round. He went to Tulsa for another Texas Pro Fuel Circuit race the next day. Thirty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Leroy qualified easily and lasted until round two, where he fouled against eventual winner Vic Brown driving the "Creitz & Greer" car. On June 1, Amarillo held a Texas vs. California race. All eight cars there were to make three runs each. In the first race, Goldstein's off-pace 8.32/104.80 lost to Larry Brown's 7.64/210 in the "Chaos Kids" car. In his second race, a 7.29/221.26 beat Gary Bailey's 7.54/207. Another off-pace 8.24/124.18 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 7.77/168 in the "Beach Boys" car in round three. It looked like he was on the way to winning the AHRA Springnationals. In the semifinal, he got to solo when Chris Karamesines lost fire. Then the other two semifinalists were both eliminated when Vic Brown fouled, and Don Cook crossed the centerline. So Karamesines was brought back into the show on the "break rule," and the two lined up again. This time for the title. But Leroy's clutch went away, and the "Greek" ran 7.02/216 for the victory. #2 qualifier at Indy 1968 at 6.715/219.50 and made it three rounds. Also 7.014 at Bakersfield March Meet 68. Confirmed 6.90 Green Valley. The team was based in San Diego and featured Leroy and Jim Nicoll. Did Jim own the team?; Photo: Hot Rod Archive Series, no. 6, Hemi Power (Winter 2007), p. 22 - MB |

Notes: Won NHRA Division 3 in 1969. Won the AHRA Winternationals and Springnationals, and was runner-up at the AHRA US Open and World Points Finale. Photo from 1969 World Finals in Dallas. Also 6.55/220.04 at Smokers Meet, NY National 1969. Ran 222.77 at NHRA Indianapolis 69. | Goldstein had a great season in the "Ramchargers" Top Fuel dragster in '69. It started with a win at the AHRA Winternationals. In the 32-car show he had beaten Vern Anderson, Bennie Osborn, Ron Goodsell, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Chris Karamesines was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In the final, he beat Cliff Zink with Low ET and a track record 6.89. At Pomona for NHRA's version of the Winternationals, Leroy qualified #3 with a 6.98/214.34. In the first round Dennis Baca fouled against him and Goldstein advanced to round two with a 7.10. In round two, Connie Kalitta was unable to repair his Boss 429 powered car and Leroy ran another single, this time, a 7.30. In round three he slowed down a tenth to a 7.40, but still advanced over a tire-smoking Jerry Ruth. But in the semifinals, he got oil on the tires and slowed to an 8.01/136 letting John Mulligan's 6.93/217 advance to the final. In March they were at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Leroy qualified #10 in the 32-car field with a 7.01. In the first round, his 7.29/207.86 lost to Jeep Hampshire's 7.18/223. Goldstein didn't do so well at National Trail on May 4 where he faced Don Cook in a best of three match race. He broke in the first race and then fouled in the next two races to lose the match three straight. Another win came at Bristol on June 8 for the AHRA Springnationals. In the first round, a 7.05 advanced when Zink fouled. In the second round, Leroy's 6.97 narrowly beat a blower popping Don Cook. In the semifinal, a 6.91 beat Karamesines' 7.24. In the final, he met the "Snake" Don Prudhomme. Goldstein pounded out a strong 6.80/217.38 (Top Speed) for the win. The following week (June 15) with he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.73/217.91 qualified #2. In the first round, he beat Gary Cochran with a 6.79/216.34. But in round two he lost fire on the line giving the eventual winner Hank Westmoreland, a single into round three. On June 22 he faced off against Dwight Salisbury in a best two out of three match race at LaPlace. Dwight pulled a huge holeshot in the first race and won with a 7.01/210 to Goldstein's much better 6.89/212.26. Leroy won the next race with a 6.86/211.26 when Dwight fouled, and another 6.86/219.85 (track speed record) won the match when the "Beach Boys" car lost fire on the line. At New York for the "Smoker's Meet" on June 29, Goldstein finished runner-up to Don Garlits. The "Ramchargers" car had been strong in eliminations, running a 6.73/213.76 in the first round, and a 6.61/217.90 single in round three. In the semifinal, he beat Fred Forkner with a 6.60/217. In the final against Garlits, he ran 6.55 (Low ET) at 220.04, but still lost to Garlits' 6.70/228. On July 4 the "Ramchargers" were at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show. There were two eight-car fields on dragsters racing, the UDRA Circuit and an All-Star Top Fuel race. Leroy won his first-round race over Ron Rivero with a 6.95, but in the semifinal against Dave Powers, he fouled away a 6.96/203. On July 13 Goldstein won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. He set Low ET at 6.60 and beat Mulligan in the final. |
