Notes: Leroy ran the first six-second run with a 6.95 pass on June 30, 1970, at New York National while testing Firestone tires. At Detroit in July 1970, the team ran 6.96/206, followed by a 6.99/202, and then burned to the ground. The team replaced the car, ran the first NHRA 6-second at Indy 9/70 at 6.92, and then bettered it with a 6.85. They also ran 6.92 at US 30. - Danny White | The Israeli Rocket took Funny Car Eliminator at the 1970 Springnationals (Dallas) with a winning 7.03/208.33. Though reputedly having the better car at the later Indy Nationals, he smoked it and dropped the final against Schumacher in Funny Car Eliminator. - RT | The Ramchargers' Challenger debuted in Jan at the AHRA Winternationals, where Goldstein's first run ever with the car was a 7.48/204.08 in qualifying. He lasted until the second round when he fouled away a 7.44/200.88 and lost to Larry Reyes, who ran a 7.54 in the Hawaiian. Then the team went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and failed to qualify. On March 8, Goldstein was at Lions for the second of ten AHRA Grand American races. While the "Ramchargers" didn't win or even make the final round, Leroy set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.14/209.79. He was at Rockingham for AHRA's third race, the Pro-Am Championships, but he fouled in round two against Clyde Morgan. More bad luck came for the team at the fourth AHRA Grand American at Frontier International. Leroy looked like a sure bet to make it to the final after beating Dean Dillingham in the first round with a 7.79/145.86. In round two, a 7.49/173.54 took out Mart Higginbotham, and a semifinal 7.42/197.80 beat Gene Snow's 7.77/173. But in that semifinal race, he lost a motor, and Snow was reinstated for the final. Near the end of May, Goldstein was in Detroit for the AHRA Grand American. Once again, he lost in the semifinals, despite a stout 7.31/198.72. Goldstein was long overdue for a win when the team pulled into Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals on June 7. Once again, things didn't quite go their way. A 7.41 in the first round beat Jay Howell, but in round two, his 7.63/175.78 lost to eventual winner Snow's 7.39/203. The following week (June 14), everything clicked. The team had just installed a Detroit Locker; this was the first time out with the new rear end. Leroy qualified #2 with a 7.10/210.34 at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 7.14 advanced when Bernie Williams fouled, while in round two, his 7.24/204.54 beat Bobby Rowe's 7.74/134 in the "Super Duster." He stepped up to a 7.07/207.37 to beat Leonard Hughes in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Snow. Leroy ran Low ET at 7.03/208.33 to take the victory over Gene's 7.56/148. A few days later, he was at New York National. On Friday, June 19, he warmed up for the race to be run on Saturday. His warm-up passes shocked the onlookers. He ran 7.11/208.42, then a 7.07/206.42, and finally a 7.02/209.92. As good as these times were, Saturday's were even better. It was an eight-car show, and Leroy won his first round with the sport's first generally accepted "six," a 6.98/208.80. In the semifinals, he backed it up with a 6.97/206.42 that beat Jim Liberman, and in the final, an even better 6.95/209.78 won the meet over Terry Hedrick. They were also going to run on Sunday, but it was rained out. In July, he faced Fritz Callier in a best of three match race at US 30, where Leroy won all three races, running a best of 6.93. This car made its last appearance on Sunday, July 19, in Detroit. Leroy set a track record 6.96 at 206.88 in the first round while beating the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. He got a single in the second round and ran 6.99/202, but the Challenger burst into flames at the finish line. The car burnt for almost an hour once the magnesium caught fire; there was no putting it out. Nothing left of the car was salvageable, but Goldstein was not hurt. The "Ramchargers" had a new car built, and it was 10 inches narrower and 100 lbs. lighter than the car that burnt. The best NHRA times for Goldstein this year were his great 6.832/212.76 at Indy (Bob Frey).

Notes: Won 1971 Gators in a dominant performance. Quickest and fastest funny car run in history at the time, but by the end of the year, Bill Leavitt lowered the mark to 6.48. | Goldstein was tough to beat driving the "Ramchargers" car in '71. He started the season at Lions on January 10 for the AHRA Grand American. He was the low qualifier of the "seeded" entries with a 7.16. In the first round, he improved to a 6.96/207.85 that beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's late 6.89/206. Another 7.16 at 201.79 advanced when Don Prudhomme broke a rear end. Unfortunately, Leroy broke in the semifinals against eventual winner Gene Snow. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 7.22/205 qualified #11. Goldstein's 7.16/208.81 beat a Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max in the opening round.” In round two, he ran 7.14 to beat Mike Snively in Jim Annin's car. He improved to a 7.09 in the semifinals to trailer Jake Johnston driving Snow's second car. He went up against Butch Maas, driving the "Hawaiian" in the final, and despite running his best time of the weekend, a 7.08, he lost to Maas, who stepped up with a 6.93 for the victory. The AHRA Winternationals was held at Beeline Dragway in Arizona, and it featured a 32-car show. Goldstein was one of AHRA's seeded cars (guaranteed a spot in the show), and his 7.19 qualified #4 among that group. A 7.03 beat Ron Sutherland in the first round, but an off-pace 7.39/209.30 in round two lost to Gordon Mineo's 7.28/195. LaPlace held a four-car show before the Gatornationals, and Goldstein was declared the winner by winning all three of his races. He ran 7.09/192.71 to beat Chris Karamesines' new Mustang, a 7.07/189.47 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster," and he was to race in the final. Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Minick blew his engine on the burnout, and Leroy made an easy pass for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Goldstein dominated the race. He qualified #1 with a 6.80/219.51 and then opened eliminations with a 6.71/220.58 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Larry Reyes. In round two, another strong 6.75/220.44 dropped Dick Rosberg's 6.96/190 in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro. He then ran 13.96/59.32 to win in the semifinals when Phil Castronovo had his throttle stick open and crashed into the guardrail. He went up against Rowe in the final. The "Super Duster” had broken in the semifinals and was unable to make the call. So, Leroy ran 9.28 to pick up the win. In April, he won over an eight-car field at Aquasco. There he ran 7.04/199.10 and 7.09 over Tom Sneden and Pete Hill to reach the final, where he faced Sneden again, who had gotten back into the show on the "break rule." Once again, Leroy beat the "Bob Banning" Challenger. The finals times were 7.06/176.12 to Tom's 7.40/183. The "Ramchargers" were at Edgewater for a best of three match against the track record holder, Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the first race, Leroy ran the track's first "six" while beating Minick. He reset his own record with a strong 6.79 to win two straight. Leroy made a third solo pass when Pat could not run after burning a couple of pistons in their second race. Another win came at Capitol Raceway on April 17. There he came away with a 6.81 track record, and in the final, he beat Tommy Grove's Ford-powered car. The following day (April 18), he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 among the "seeded" cars with a 6.93/207.36. Goldstein got a solo in the first round, but he fouled away a 6.89 against Snow in round two. Goldstein was at US 131 in May for an eight-car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he did reset his own 7.03 track record with his 6.81/210 defeat of Tharp in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand American. Leroy beat Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered car in the first round, with a 6.98/190.26, but the Challenger got out of shape in the second round while facing Cecil Lankford. Leroy corrected, and the rear end housing ripped free of the chassis. The body flew off, and the car skidded down the track on its chassis. Things weren't right with the car when it showed up at Baton Rouge for the AHRA Southern Nationals. The new rear end wasn't properly aligned, and the car was torn down and rebuilt in the pits. The work paid off with a first-round win over Paul Gordon driving the "Red Baron" with a 7.01/210.77, but in the second round, the car went up in tire smoke and lost to Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. It was then off to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. Goldstein had won the race the previous year, but he lost to Rowe in the opening round this time. More bad luck hit the team at Martin, Michigan, on July 3 when they had an engine let go, and the car caught fire. The body started to break up, and the air got inside, lifting the entire car off the track for a short distance before the body broke free. Leroy still went through the lights with a 6.93/213! But the team was already mounting their third Challenger body since the start of the '71 season. The team wasn't down for long as on July 18, Goldstein set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.80/215.32 in qualifying #1 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A first-round 6.88/208 beat a fireballing Sam Miller, and in round two, he made an easy solo as the field was short. In the semifinals, Leroy’s 7.02/208 lost to his future employer Leonard Hughes' 6.89/211. Two days later (July 20), the team was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, Goldstein failed to reach the final. The last weekend of July meant just one thing, the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. Goldstein won all three of his races, but his times were not good enough to get him into the final round. He started with a 7.01/204.54 over Gary Bolger's 7.03/209 in the "Golddigger." A second-round 6.91/209.30 beat the only GM-powered car at the meet, Dean LaPole's "King Camaro," and a third-round 6.92/198.67 got around Tom McEwen, who broke. August started with a runner-up finish to Tom Hoover at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A week later (August 7), the team was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Thirteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car show. All ran the first-round, with the low eight ETs advancing into round two. Goldstein just made the show with his 7.29 getting him the #8 spot. It did him little good as the car came up ailing in the first round, and lost to "Flash Gordon" Mineo's 7.39. On August 15, Leroy was at York US 30 for the AHRA Nationals. He set the Top Speed of the meet on Saturday night during qualifying with a 6.87/220.58. On Sunday, he began eliminations by beating Johnny Roderiques. But in the second round, the team overpowered the track and smoked the tires, losing to Mart Higginbotham. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for a four-car show on August 22, but he and his opponent, Dale Pulde driving the M/T Pinto, probably made the track promotor cry on their first run. Both had their rear ends break free from the chassis. Then came the AHRA Grandnationals at Marion County, Ohio, on August 29. A 6.97/214 qualified #1, and Leroy lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to Lankford. If the team didn't already have enough bad luck, the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis had more in store. During qualifying, Leroy was making a run with Tom Prock driving Al Bergler's Vega. Prock lost a wheel, veered into Goldstein's lane, and clipped the right rear of the Challenger. The "Ramchargers" team thrashed all night to get the car ready for eliminations, as they had already qualified #8 in the show. All the hard work went for naught as in the opening round, Richard Tharp drove the "Blue Max" to a 6.72/216 to beat Goldstein's 6.93/214. After the Indy race, the team stopped at US 30, Gary, Indiana, for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All cars were to run one race, with the lowest ET car being declared the winner. Goldstein smoked the tires to a 7.51/203 in a loss to Dick Harrell's 6.99/217. Dick would lose his life two days later in a racing accident in Toronto, Canada. We needless to say, Goldstein did not win that race. Before the month was out, Arnie Behling replaced Goldstein as the driver for this car.

Notes: Leroy started the year at the wheel of the Ramchargers Challenger. He was runner-up to Butch Maas at the NHRA Winternationals before winning the NHRA Gatornationals. He switched to the team of Candies & Hughes in the Fall of 71 and promptly reset the NHRA National Record at Amarillo during the NHRA World Finals with an altitude corrected 6.80. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet he ran a very competitive 6.74 at 221.13 narrowly missing the final round which pitted the two lowest ET cars.

Notes: If there was one thing you could say about the "Candies and Hughes" team: it was high class all the way. Paul Candies and Leonard Hughes had been running a Barracuda Funny Car for quite a while prior to the '72 season. Their '71 car held the NHRA national record at 6.80. They hired Leroy Goldstein to drive, and he continued into the '72. The team had Woody Gilmore of Race Car Engineering build them two cars for '72 with a few differences in Leroy's car compared to the second machine driven by Hughes. Goldstein's car was supposed to run in match race competition, while Hughes ran the major events. They were not cheap, costing Candies $25,000 each. Goldstein's car had a 122" wheelbase and a Keith Black Hemi with a two-speed Lenco transmission. The car weighed 1,900 lbs. Leroy qualified fourteenth at the 1972 NHRA Supernationals with a 6.517/218.91. In the first round, he improved to 6.470/218.97, beating John Lombardo. He lost in the second round to Ed McCulloch's 6.37/225.56 with a respectable 6.59/189.87. Leroy ran this car on his own for Paul Candies & Leonard Hughes in 1972. He was the driver and crew chief. Leroy qualified at 6.707/206.89 at Tulsa PRA. | Leroy began to drive for C&H at the World Finals in 1971, where he was the #1 qualifier and runner-up to Phil Castronovo (almost the world champ)! But I only show him running at Pomona (6.82/209.79), Gainesville (6.72/221.67), and Ontario (6.47/218.97) in 1972. According to my records, Leonard Hughes drove at Columbus, Englishtown, Sanair, Indy, and Amarillo. Leroy drove for the entire tour in 1973, including Indy. We need to confirm the 228.42 speed, which did not occur on the NHRA trail. - BP | Bill, in 1972, Leroy mainly match-raced. We went to Tulsa for the PRA race, along with many others, instead of Indy, but we didn’t do the NHRA big events except the few you mentioned. We raced the AHRA races, and Leroy ended up being FC Champion in 1972 in C&H car. - Chris Carlton (Goldstein), 1/28/23

Notes: The photo was in the 12/72 Drag World, but we have Leroy going 6.70/204.54 in the car in 1973. Was that 1972 instead, or did he drive it on occasion in both years?

Notes: Goldstein was at Pomona for the twice rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals. 58 Funny Cars were attempting to qualify, and the track was terrible. Leroy ran a 7.4 and was the #5 qualifier. A first-round 7.82 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.47. Times were more "normal" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #5 again with a more respectable 6.49. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, before losing to Don Schumacher's 6.34 in round two with a 6.61. Goldstein won the Division 4 Opener at LaPlace, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 6.73/217.39 before beating Paul Smith in Fred Wells'Charger in the final with a 6.74/216.86. In late April at Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals, Leroy qualified both the team's Top Fuel car and the Funny Car first in both classes. A 6.48 qualified the "Cuda #1. He also won both classes as well as he won Top Fuel and ran 6.60 in the first round, of Funny Car over Beebe in Larry Huff's car, a 6.52 beat Shirl Greer in round two, and a semifinal 6.57 beat Preston Davis. He met up with Mike Snively driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite in the final. Unfortunately, the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda broke, and Snively soloed for the win. He was runner-up at Lubbock Dragway in Texas for the Division 4 race held there. He smoked the tires in the final and lost to Jim Nicoll. At the NHRA Springnationals, Leroy qualified #10 but lost to Beebe's 6.69/210 in the first round, with a 6.91/213.77. In July, the team was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.59 qualified #12. A first-round 6.61/222 beat Gene Snow's 6.81/173. In round two, Leroy advanced with a 6.64/178.57 over Tom Crevasse. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.51/224.43 when Dale Emery broke. In the final, he met Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer owned Vega. Leroy got the victory with a 6.74/214.79, beating Pat's 6.78/223. Goldstein was in Canada on August 3 for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.74. In the first round, he got a single when Ken Achs broke in the "Pacemaker" Vega. Leroy ran 6.96 to move into the semifinal. He ran a 6.70/218.44 but lost to Emery's quick-leaving 6.71/215. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.49/228.42 qualified #15 (tough field)! A first-round 6.373/229.00 beat Clare Sanders' 6.52/225 in the "Ramchargers" Demon. In round two, he advanced with a 6.66 when Schumacher had a bad vibration and shut off early. Both he and Don Prudhomme ran 6.52's in the semifinals, Leroy at 229, but the "Snake" got the win.

Notes: The "Candies and Hughes" team had raced FCs from the very beginning. Early in '73, they took delivery of a brand new, RCE built Top Fuel dragster. In March, the team was at Southland Dragway, where Goldstein drove the car on some "shakedown" passes. The best run was 6.25/228. In April, Leroy was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Division 4 opener. He drove both the team's Funny Car and the dragster at this race. He qualified #3 in TF, and in round one, his 6.34/222.22 beat Charlie Durel. But in the semifinals, his 6.51/222.77 lost to eventual winner Flip Schofield's 6.40/217. Goldstein did win Funny Car at this race. He also ran both cars at Dallas International for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. There he set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.11. Goldstein's 6.40 in the opening round of eliminations beat Ronnie Martin, and he lost to Dick McFarland in round two, but McFarland crashed in the shutdown area. With the "break rule" in effect, this returned Goldstein to the show. He then beat Paul Longenecker in the semifinal with a 6.19. The final was interesting; he was to run Vic Brown, who was driving for Bob Creitz. The Christmas tree malfunctioned, and Brown took off, running 6.17 while Leroy shut off on the line. IHRA officials were calling for a rerun, but car owner Creitz refused. So Goldstein raced Brown again in the final, only this time, Vic was on the line without the dragster. He had decided to race Leroy on foot! Goldstein made an easy run for the victory. He didn't do too bad in Funny Car either, where he finished runner-up. The team was back at Southland Dragway on May 27 for the second NHRA Division 4 race. Goldstein qualified #1 and set Top Speed at 225.00, but he fouled against Bill Wigginton in the opening round. Won Division 4 Amarillo meet over Steve Carbone. Confirmed 6.11 at Dallas International. Their best NHRA national event times were 6.16/230.76 at Ontario, the only place they ran the dragster on the national event trail. | On 7/1/73, Goldstein defeated Clayton Harris in a best 2 of 3 match race at Magnolia Dragway in Gulfport, MS. R1 Harris 6.30 def Goldstein 6.55. R2 Goldstein 6.37/226.70 def Harris. R3 Goldstein 6.47/221 def Harris 6.85/205.47. - Julian Roberts

Notes: On March 23, Goldstein was at Irwindale for its Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car show and his 6.57 qualified second behind Ed McCulloch's 6.56. In the first round, both he and his opponent, Dale Pulde, ran 6.93 (Leroy at 210.28), but Dale crossed the stripe first in the M/T Grand Am. He was back at Irwindale in mid-April for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.47 lost to Larry Christopherson's 6.88. Leroy was driving the "Mr. Ed" car at the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #7 at 6.612/221.67. He got out of shape against Al Segrini in the first round, and shut off. That was Leroy's only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Gene was the #4 qualifier at the NHRA World Finals at 7.336/212.76 (Top Speed of the Meet). He beat a fouling Albert Waits in round one with a coasting 9.268 to a wasted 7.712/196.50. Dave Beebe beat him in round two, 7.267/195.22 to Gene's 7.479/209.30. That was Gene's only NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Gene was at Beeline Dragway near the end of January for the AHRA Winternationals. Over 100 TF cars showed up to attempt to qualify for the 32-car field. His 7.74 qualified #5, but he fouled against Tommy Allen in the opening round. At Pomona, the following week, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 7.409/213.76 qualified #17. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Leroy Goldstein. Goleman got out first, and his 7.357/217.90 held on to win over Goldstein's 7.30/211. He got an easy solo in round two and ran 11.312/80.00. In the third round, he took on the always-tough Dave Beebe, and Gene improved to 7.279/216.86 to beat Beebe's 7.400/215.20. He met another formidable opponent in the semi-final, Danny Ongais. This was a close race but Gene nipped Danny 7.290/215.30 to 7.291/210.76) to take win light. He faced the Ford-powered car of Connie Kalitta in the final. Kalitta had been running about a half-a-tenth quicker throughout eliminations. The performance gap increased in the final, where Kalitta's 7.173/218.43 beat Gene's 7.466/213.76 runner-up effort. The team did not race at Bakersfield, instead choosing to race at Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open. Gene's 7.39/211.76 qualified second to Jim Dunn's 7.36. A 7.45 in the first round beat John Edmunds' late 7.31. The car failed to fire for his second-round race. Runner up to Kalitta at '67 NHRA Winternationals. Gene died in a crash at Union Grove, Wisconsin, on July 2, 1967, when a gust of wind pushed him into the center timing lights. The tail section wasn't on the car at the time, and it was eventually fitted to John Bateman's Atlas Oil Tool Spl. Confirmed 7.23/223 on the day he died at Union Grove. The actual name was Garland Goleman. Often referred to as Gene 'Coleman' in race reports.
