Notes: Shirl ran 9.78 at 100.44 in a first-round loss at the 1968 All American Funny Car championships in Bristol, TN. He faced off against Malcolm Durham late in October for a best-of-three-match race at Houston. He lost two straight to Malcolm but ran a 7.81 in a losing effort in his first race. He got out of shape and shut down in his second race. | The Tension Charger was a Ramchargers car that had been crashed. Dad front-halved & re-vamped the chassis & mounted the body himself. Later, he & Don Gatliff cut & sectioned the body to make it a Mini-Charger. - Brian Greer |

Notes: Greer was the first driver to reset the NHRA flopper record in the decade of the 70s with a 7.30 in his "Tension" mini-Charger which erased Danny Ongais' 7.37 mark in Mickey Thompson's Mustang from 69. - Danny White | The 70 Tension Charger was a Ramchargers car that had been crashed. Dad front-halfed & re-vamped the chassis & mounted the body himself. Later, he & Don Gatliff cut & sectioned the body to make it a Mini-Charger. - Brian Greer | Shirl started the '70 season by winning the Drag News Championships in Orlando on Jan 4. He qualified #1 with an 8.23 and in the first round, he got the "odd-lot" single. In the second round, Bobby Wood broke on the line so Greer's 8.67/130.62 advanced. He got another solo in the semifinals. In the final he set Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with an 8.11/198.48 to beat Larry Arnold. On May 31, Shirl won the NHRA Division 2 race at Gainesville. He soloed in the first round, with an 11.63/129.31. In the semifinals, he advanced with an 8.81/156.25 when Huston Platt's Camaro broke. In the finals, he beat Julius Hughes' 7.96/193 with a 7.58/193.54. In May he was at Warner Robins for a best of three match against Jim Kirby's Camaro. Greer won the match two straight running 7.41 in the first race and a track record 7.37 in the second. |

Notes: This was Greer's most successful car. He started the '73 season by qualifying #4 with a 6.84/213.77 in a sixteen-car field at Miami-Hollywood in Jan for its Funny Car Nationals. In round one, he advanced with a 6.80, and in the second round, he got lucky as the car threw its blower belt. But Greer's 27.31/51.07 still won as Al Hanna's "Eastern Raider" Pinto had died on the line. Greer's Mustang lost fire on the line in the semifinal, and Shirl had to watch as Al Marshall soloed into the final with the "Tyrant." In February, he went to Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway for its Spring Drag race. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 7.36 beat Richard Tharp, who got out of shape in the "Blue Max." A second-round 7.50 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.46. Shortly after that, he was back in Miami for another eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.98/207.85 lost to Colson's 6.80/209 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." On March 4, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he got out of shape and shut off against Ron O'Donnell, whose 7.17 advanced in the "Big Noise" 'Cuda. Early in March, he was also at Miami for a best of three match race against Pete Miner in the "Gold Coast Duster." It was not a good race for Greer as he lost two straight. In the first race, the car pitched a blower. After fixing the car, he came back out, got out of shape, and shut down to 9.02/203.16, losing to Miner's 7.27/190. He was the fourth alternate at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, running a 6.70/217.91 best. Shirl was back in Miami for another show in March. He qualified #11, but his 6.67/216.86 lost to Ed O'Brien's 6.68/216. His next stop was at Phenix City for the NHRA Division 2 opener. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, and shut off to a 9.33/99.33 loss to Harry Hudson's 8.31/171. He was in Dallas late in April for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals, but he lost to Leroy Goldstein in the "Candies and Hughes" car in round two. A 6.94 qualified #8 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He advanced past Gary Litton in the first round, with a 9.21. Round two was another easy run when Joe Lee was shut off on the line when his Charger had an oil leak. In the semifinals, Greer ran a good 6.76/205.37, but he lost to eventual winner Mike Snively in the "Mr. Ed" car, which beat him with a 6.55/221. He got a win at the third NHRA Division 2 race held at Blaney Drag Strip on June 2. In the first round, he got a solo as his would-be opponent, Preston Davis, had lost his car in a qualifying fire. In the semifinal, Greer's 7.20/199 beat out of shape Frank Oglesby. He faced Miner in the final, and a 7.01/201.84 gave Greer the victory. He was at Bristol on June 17 for the IHRA Springnationals but lost to Colson in round two. Later in June, he drove Billy Holt's Vega at Atlanta, but he was back in his own car when he won the Division 2 race at Miami-Hollywood. Shirl's 7.17/207 in the opening round beat Harry Hudson's "Super Ford." He had soloed at 9.88 in the semifinal when Jim Nicoll's Vega caught fire on the line. In the final, he faced Smith, who was driving the "Sir Wells" Charger. Shirl's holeshot 6.88/191 beat Smith's quicker 6.84/211. On September 8, he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. He lost fire in the opening round against eventual winner Billy Meyer. A week later (September 16), he was at Bristol for the IHRA All-American race. Greer lasted until round two, where his 6.66/215.82 lost to eventual winner Dale Emery's 6.48/225 in the "Jeg's" Camaro. It was back to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. In the first round, opponent Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max," lost a blower belt, so Greer advanced easily. But in round two, he lost to another eventual winner Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega. At the NHRA World Finals held at Amarillo Dragway, Greer ran well. He qualified #1 on the Eastern half of the ladder with a 6.77. In the first round, he advanced at 6.82/193.96 when Art Ward lost fire, and in the second round, his 6.72/215.31 beat John Dekker's 6.79. In the semifinals, his strong 6.64 (no speed recorded) lost to Frank Hall's 6.42/225.56. Frank would go on to win. That was Shirl's last NHRA national event of the year. On October 14, Shirl was at Lakeland for the IHRA Nationals. He had an early exit as his first-round 6.96/209.30 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.85 in Don Schumacher's Vega. Wouldn't you know it? Beadle went on to win the race. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.540/221.67 at Indy Nationals. Formerly listed 6.475/225.00 times, but I think those were from 1975. Let me know if you can prove otherwise. - BP | Gorgeous car. A striking departure from Shirl's earlier rides. | The Mach I Chain Lightning Mustang was started by Chuck Finders & completed by Cecil Hicks. — Brian Greer. | Times and info from National Dragster, 2/01/74, for Lakeland ad claim of 6.57/221. Ran 6.62 at Dallas. |

Notes: AKA Chain Lightning. 1974 NHRA World Champion by winning the World Finals after a severe fire in qualifying. Seemingly half the Funny Car pits helped to reconstruct the badly damaged Mustang to enable Shirl to defeat Don Prudhomme for the championship. The following year, the year-long Winston Points championships began, ending the "Super Bowl"-style "win one race, and you're the champion" method of selecting the world champ. | The Mach I Chain Lightning Mustang was started by Chuck Finders & completed by Cecil Hicks. — Brian Greer | Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. | Ran 6.71 at Gainesville, 6.51 at Columbus, 6.55 at Englishtown, 6.47 at Ontario, and 6.41 at KCIR. | Shirl had been around since before the term "funny car" was used. But '74 was a great year for him. He started the season by qualifying #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.71, but he lost early. He followed that up with a win at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace, where his final round 6.85/175.78 got the victory when Frank Oglesby broke. On March 31, Greer was at Charlotte Speedway for the IHRA Southern Nationals. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Shirl's 4.44 qualified #1 for the eight-car show. Raymond Beadle broke against him in the first round, and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 4.42/173.07 in the semifinals beat Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the final, he faced Ken Safford driving the "Mr. Norm" car and lost. He qualified #5 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with a 6.92/203.16, but he failed to reach the finals. Another win came at Lakeland for the NHRA Division 2 Opener held there in May. He stopped Pete Miner in the final. Greer then went to Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race, where Miner got revenge by beating him in the first round. A 6.51/212.44 qualified #5 at the NHRA Springnationals, debuting his first aluminum block. But a first-round 6.60/206.42 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.62/220. His next stop was at Blaney in South Carolina for the third NHRA Division 2 race. He won that race with a final round 6.80/204.30 that beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.70/217 in the "Fireball Vega." At Bristol, 35 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field at the IHRA Springnationals. Greer qualified #3 with a 6.56. He beat Smith in round one, with a 6.61/200.00, and in round two, his 6.58/194.80 beat Miner's 6.78/206. He lost a motor against Billy Meyer in the semifinals, and the Mustang went up in flames. It was minor damage, and he was OK. He qualified #1 at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Mid-America Dragway but failed to reach the finals. Shirl qualified #1 again at Kansas City International for the AHRA Drag Nationals. A 6.41/221.13 got him the spot. His 6.50/220.04 lost to a quick-leaving Ed McCulloch in the first round, at 6.53/222. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #13 with a 6.65, but he picked up to 6.55/216.34 in the first round, to beat Russell Long's 6.65/214. Unfortunately, his car failed to fire against Don Prudhomme in round two. Greer got his first NHRA National event victory at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He ran 6.58/209.79 to qualify #2. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.61 beat Pee Wee Wallace. In the semifinals, he picked up to 6.52/207.85 to take out Al Segrini's 6.69/217. In the final, he faced Kosty Ivanof, who broke. Greer ran Low ET with a 6.511 at 198.67 for the victory. He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships the following week. Sixteen cars ran the first-round with the eight lowest ETs regardless of winning or losing times advancing into round two. Shirl's 6.46/217.91 was the quickest time of the first-round. In round two, Gordie Bonin stepped up to 6.42/225 to beat his 6.50/215.31. He failed to qualify at the NHRA US Nationals, but he won the NHRA Division 2 final at Gainesville. A final round 6.81/203.16 beat Jerry Gwynn. He was back at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open, where he didn't reach the finals, but he set Top Speed at 212.76. Shirl won IHRA's next event, the All-American at Bristol, on September 29. He qualified #12, and he beat Gene Snow in the first round, but in round two, he lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.41 with a 6.64. Fortunately for Greer, Leavitt hurt his engine on the run, and Greer was reinstated on the "break rule." Shirl capitalized on his second chance by running 6.45 in the semifinals to beat Tom Hoover. In the final, his quicker-leaving 6.49/222.22 beat Smith's 6.47/221 for his first IHRA victory. Then came his dramatic NHRA World Finals race. Greer was fighting for the Points Championship with Smith, who was leading going into this race, Frank Hall, and Don Prudhomme. Smith and Hall were eliminated when neither was able to qualify, so that left it between him and Prudhomme. Greer had already qualified for the race with a 6.47/212.26, but he attempted to improve his time with another qualifying run. The car erupted into a ball of fire on the pass when the motor let go. It was the worst fire of the event, and there were plenty of fires at this race. Greer suffered burns on his face, hands, and arms. The car was presumed a total loss, but while Shirl was at the hospital, his crew as well as the teams from the "Fireball Vega" and the "Eastern Raider" took the smoldering remains of the Mustang to Steve Montrelli's shop and rebuilt the car. They called Greer at the hospital and told him they thought they could get it fixed. He told them that if they could fix it, he would see about getting out of the hospital to run. He had to sign a release from the hospital stating that they were not liable for him. Shirl got to the track with his hands bandaged up. NHRA required him to make a half-pass check-out run. His firesuit had been burned, so he borrowed Al Hanna's. He had more problems putting a pair of fire gloves on. They wouldn't fit over his bandages. Prudhomme happened to stop by to see how Greer was, and he suggested putting on work gloves and then hitting the fire gloves on over them. Don even went over to his pit to get him the gloves. It worked. Going into eliminations, Greer held a 260 point advantage over Prudhomme. He had to last at least as many rounds as the "Snake" to win the championship. Greer beat Leroy Chadderton in the first round, and once again, the car was on fire. Shirl got it stopped, and the fire was extinguished. Prudhomme beat Gene Snow. Round two started, and Greer was in line to race Jim Dunn, but he watched as Dale Pulde dropped the "Snake" with a 6.16. At this point, they saw that the championship was theirs, and they called it quits. Why push lady luck anymore. You would think that would bring his season to a close, but he still raced at the Irwindale Team Funny Car Championships, where he showed up with a Mustang II in primer. Ironically, he lost to Prudhomme in the first round. | Best NHRA times were 6.471 at the World Finals and 216.34 at the Summernationals. Formerly listed 6.38/225 times, but cannot find evidence of those times in 1974. Please let us know if you have that. |

Notes: Ran Low ET at 6.40 at the Warner Robins WWCS meet. | At the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Shirl qualified 7th with a 6.487/230.17. He beat Mike Miller (Green Elephant Vega) in the first round, and Gary Burgin in the second; his 6.469 against Burgin was his quickest run in NHRA national event competition. He lost in the semifinals to Don Prudhomme when he went up in smoke. AKA Chain Lightning. - TN | Turned a 6.48/221.67 at Englishtown, NJ, in August '75. - RT | Ran 6.47/213.27 at Indy US Nationals 9/75. | Greer started the '75 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.53 to qualify #4. A first-round 6.47/224.42 beat Richard Tharp in Mike Burkhart's Satellite. In the second round, a 6.66/223.32 beat Jim Dunn's ailing car. He the semifinals, he received a single when Mike Miller was unable to fire the "Green Elephant." Shirl ran 6.91/161.87 to advance into the final, where he met up with Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's low qualifying Mustang (at 6.32). Both cars had problems hooking up, and Greer got the victory with a 7.03/218.96 over Neil's 7.08/220. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and failed to qualify. On March 2, he was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified on the "bump." In the first round, Greer ran a 6.90, but lost to Tom Prock's 6.67. Things went better at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #7 with a 6.48/230.17. A first-round 6.68/222.22 beat Miller, while in round two, a 6.469 got around Gary Burgin. But in the semifinals, he got out of shape and lost to Prudhomme. He won the first NHRA Division 2 race at Warner Robins, where he qualified #1 with a 6.61 and then set Low ET in the final with a 6.40/219.51 over runner-up Paul Smith's 6.41/229. He was runner-up at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Luck played a big part in his finish as a first-round 7.06 beat Rodger Hamrick's 9.61. In round two, a 7.12 beat Dale Emery's 10.42 in Gene Snow's car. All that was needed to win in the semifinals was a 9.30 when Tharp lost a rear end. But in the final, Greer's luck ran out as his 9.31/93.00 lost to Raymond Beadle's Low ET shot of 6.58 at 214 in the "Blue Max." Greer won another Division 2 race when he beat Dennis Lockaby's 6.83/199 in the final at Suffolk with a 6.66/201. Shirl lost to Denny Savage in the first round, at the IHRA Springnationals, but he set Top Speed of the meet at 224.43. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.50. He easily got past the first-round and then ran a 6.53 to beat Gordie Bonin's 6.59 in round two. In the semifinals, he met Prudhomme, and both went up in smoke, but the "Snake" recovered first for the win. He was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, but failed to reach the finals. Shirl set Top Speed of the Meet at the NHRA Grandnationals at 225.00. 6.533 216.34 losing to Prudhomme at the PHR US 131 race. |

Notes: Greer was at Tucson Dragway in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 for the show and in the second round, his 6.69 beat a tire smoking Jim Liberman at 6.78. In the semifinals, Tom McEwen also smoked the tires against him and Greer advanced with a 6.84. He faced Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang in the final and this time it was Greer who smoked the tires. He shut down to 8.00 while Van Sant got the victory with a 6.84. His next stop was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic and while he qualified, he failed to reach the finals there. He failed to qualify at Pomona with his 6.350/204.54 just missing the 6.34 "bump." At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.381/222.77 qualified #5. A 6.39/205.01 got around a tire frying John Lombardo, while a second round 6.40/207.85 got past Tom Prock, who also overpowered the track. In the semifinals, a 6.50/206.42 advanced when Bob Pickett also smoked the tires. In the final, he raced Don Prudhomme and on paper it looked like it was close as the "Snake's" best run of eliminations had been a 6.45. Unfortunately for Greer, Prudhomme stepped up in the final to set both ends of the track record (6.24/236.84) while Shirl shut down to 7.66/118.89. He then went to Warner Robins for the NHRA Division 2 Opener on March 28. Shirl's 6.60/213.77 qualified #1 and he got the "odd lot" solo" in the first round, as there were only seven cars on hand. On his solo, he ran 6.59/196.07. In the semifinals, he beat Ron Leaf's Vega with a 6.86/189.07 and he had it easy in the final as opponent Prock broke. Greer ran 6.60/216.34 (Top Speed) for the victory. He then made a stop at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lasted until the semifinals before his off-pace 8.59/123.62 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 6.81/227 in the "Blue Max." Greer also won the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto on April 11 over Pete Miner. In June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 6.58 qualified #11. He improved to 6.46/216 in the opening round to beat Ron O'Donnell's 6.89/189 and in round two, opponent Paul Smith smoked the tires and Greer advanced with a 6.94 at a booming 229.00. In the semifinals, he ran a good 6.48/221.13, but it wasn't enough to stop Prudhomme's 6.34/214. Shortly after this, he was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, where he reached the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Gary Burgin. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Greer qualified #8 with a 6.486/223.88. He beat John Austin in the first round, with a nice 6.388, but a late leaving 6.404 in round two lost to McEwen's 6.529. Shirl did not qualify at Indy with his best ET of the year, 6.340 at 226.13. AKA Chain Lightning. Photo from the 1976 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Greer was a perennial Division 2 contender and won the division Funny Car title in 76, 77, and 78. Confirm if this is a Cecil Hicks or Jaime Sarte car. |

Photo from 1977 D3 WWCS Indianapolis Raceway Park. | The 77 Plymouth Arrow, which was short-lived, was built by Jaime Sarte. It was also the second Arrow body out. Prudhomme had the first. - Brian Greer | Shirl ran 6.45 at Milan. Shirl’s best NHRA national event times were 6.60/222.22 at the Gatornationals. He attempted to qualify at Indy, but was a 12.04-second DNQ. Those were Shirl’s only two NHRA national event appearances. Formerly listed 6.235/230.76 for 1977 in this car. We believe those times reflect 1981 performances. Let us know if you have evidence to the contrary. |

Notes: 107 IHRA. Definitely had this Trans Am at Gainesville. | Shirl Greer failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He did qualify on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.66/205. An opening round 6.35/230.76 beat Denny Savage's off-pace 7.55/134. A second round 6.43/222.22 lost to Gordie Bonin who had no ET recorded. The following week, he went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. The track was slick and he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Late in April, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 7.62/170 qualified #10, but in the first round, he shut down to 13.05/60 in a loss to Savage. Shirl did not qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. He didn't compete in any other NHRA events this year. |

Notes: NHRA number 207. Shirl did not qualify at Gainesville (no time) for his only NHRA national event appearance. Shortly after that he was at DeSoto Memorial Raceway for the NHRA Division 2 Opener. He set Low ET with a 6.49 and in the final his 6.80/225.00 got the victory when Les Cassidy's car died on the line. |

Notes: Greer was at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.4 qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he slipped to a tire-smoking 6.90/181 in the opening round and lost to Dale Pulde's 6.35/221. Paul Smith was driving the car at the NHRA Cajun Nationals the following week. Shirl drove Coogle's car at the Snowbird National Open in November. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field on the slippery track with a 7.468/158. But in the first round, the engine let go, and he lost to Fred Mandoline's alky burner. We need to validate the exact 6.4 in Rockingham. |

Notes: Shirl was a 6.320/222.22 DNQ at Gainesville for his only NHRA national event appearance. Greer lost his car and his shop due to a fire in October. Lighting (ironic due to his "Unchained Lightning" car name) was the cause, and his garage burned to the ground. Photo from 1979. |

Notes: Wrestler Dusty Rhoades sponsor. Ran his own car and drove for Larry Coogle throughout the year, with very similar times in both mounts. | Shirl qualified #11 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.081/230.17. He bettered those times in the first round, with a 6.070/231.36, but unfortunately, it was accompanied with a red light that advanced Gordie Bonin's 6.247/237.46. After qualifying #5 in the eight-car field, he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round, at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Shirl hopped into Larry Coogle's car for NHRA Atlanta. At the NHRA Springnationals, Greer ran 6.241/221.12 to qualify #11. A first-round 6.444/227.27 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.12/226. Shirl did not qualify at NHRA Englishtown at 6.750/157.61. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Shirl ran his own car and drove for Larry Coogle throughout the year, with very similar times in both mounts. | A good run came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There, a 6.104 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He beat Al Segrini in the first round, with a 6.184/232.55 before smoking the tires in the semifinals and losing to Tripp Shumake driving Johnny Loper's car. The following week (May 3), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." It didn't go well for Greer and the car slowed to 6.60/201.34 in a loss to Beadle's 6.00/233. Shirl continued to qualify well when he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where his 6.14 qualified #4. A 6.47 in the first round, lost to Paul Smith's 6.30. |

Notes: At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Greer ran 8.165/65.84, which was only good for 6th Alternate. | This B&W photo from Bristol Dragway at the end of the track by Dave Gillespie. He took a series of pictures of the car and of Shirl. This was Shirl's return to driving after he was forced into retirement from the subsequent fire at his garage from a lightning hit. Kind of a spooky scenario, being that his championship car from the seventies was Chain Lightning. These B&W shots are really good. Some of them have a really good perspective of the driver behind that mammoth B-4 overhead cam motor we ran. Shirl loved the power it produced. He mentioned once, while talking to Bret Kepner from ESPN, that he felt the torque it produced right up through the frame rails. The original driver, Carl Fumerelle, had the same feeling of the Batten motor. It was a pleasure to see Shirl drive the car. He likened it to a Sunday drive in the old station wagon. He was that comfortable. I wish we could have done more with Shirl. He is truly one of the best drivers ever and truly one of the original southern gentlemen. The color photo is from Milan Dragway in 1989 at the Northern Nationals. I do not know who took this photo. It's nice though. If the photographer has any more, please contact me. If you were on the outside looking in (as a fan or spectator), you would only see what happens in front of you. But if you come from the inside (other teams, drivers, owners, and engine builders), there is a whole different perspective on what we tried to do. Any new design is going to have inherent concerns. Especially if it is a whole new idea right out of the box. No data on fuel demands. No data on valve train weight. No data on piston speed in conjunction with spring pressure. No data on blower configuration. No data on cam design, fuel, or air flow. No data on camshaft harmonics at high rpms. These are all things that you try to figure into the operational product, but until you feed the monster and light her up, you really don't know what happens when the cage is opened. We found out, sometimes as an embarrassing shutdown, sometimes as a fire, and sometimes with total destruction of components. Don Garlits told me one day when he was studying the car: "Never give up on your dreams, and never let the guys upstairs stop you from progress. After all, all of us got here because of someone's idea. Hey, I'm Don Garlits, and if I wanna put rubber bands on my front end as tires, well, they won't stop me because I've tried everything." - Phil Bloom |
