Notes: Grimes, an Atlanta mechanic, began racing at Fairburn in 1955 with a '39 Ford coupe. He ran a best of 103 mph in the coupe. He debuted his rail dragster on Jan. 29, 1956 at Fairburn. With the help of the Georgia Tech Auto Club, the dragster had been 18 months in construction. On its first outing, it set the track record 108 mph. On Feb. 12, he upped the track record at Fairburn to 111 mph. He kept increasing the track record until his mark of 119.67 mph was beaten by Billy Aiken's rail dragster on Apr. 29. Notes: Grimes was seriously injured in mid-October when his dragster crashed during an NHRA meet at Bristol Dragway in Tennessee. He was reportedly "bed-ridden for many months and on the sandpaper side of existence" when the May 6, 1966 Atlanta (GA) Journal announced an upcoming "Hoyt Grimes Day" fundraiser at the Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway in May of the following year. Grimes had been a gas dragster driver since 1959. Still, multiple reports of the accident -- not merely the attached wirestory -- indicate he was competing in Top Fuel Eliminator at the time of his crash. The local Bristol Herald reported the next day that he had been competing in Top Gas at the time of the accident, so we'll consider this source as definitive. Grimes ran a timed 168.22 mph against Ray Mullins immediately before losing control. -- RT |

Notes: At the U.S. Nationals at Oklahoma City, he set a new national record in E/SP with 73.11 mph. He also took a class win in E/SP with 16.48 at 73.46 mph. He also picked up a trophy for the best appearing sports car in a car show held in conjunction with the Nationals. With the taste of drag racing his Alfa Romeo in his blood, he raced at Tulsa North Airport just a few days after the Nationals on Sep. 6. He won a trophy in the E/SP class with 81.00 mph.
