Notes: Grose failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Tim was at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.32/207.37. He fouled against Dale Pulde in the first round. He went to the final NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend, where his 6.15 (Low ET) qualified #1. Tim got to the final and grabbed the win with a 6.23/227.27 over Len Imbrogno's 6.29/223. Grose failed to qualify at the NHRA World Finals, but he finished 21 in the NHRA season-long points standings. Division 3 Champ. Photo from Pomona, CA, 1979. Notes: Had a terrible crash at Columbus. Original paint. This was the third Datsun body out of the mold behind John Collins and Gary Densham. | Tim was at Edgewater on May 4 for the second NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #2 in the four-car field with a 6.34. In the first round, he beat Murf McKinney and then set Low ET with a winning 6.23/208 in the final that beat Tom Motry. At the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, he qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Rick Johnson in the opening round of eliminations. The car was destroyed in the crash during qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He was ok. Rick qualified #1 and had Low ET at the Grandnationals at 6.197. His best NHRA national event times came in a #13 qualifying 6.095/242.58 at the US Nationals. |

Notes: Tim attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 6.39/191 best failed to make the show. He did much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.03/232.55 qualified #6. Unfortunately, in the first round, against Tripp Shumake, he encountered tire shake and shut off to a 7.18. A best of 6.22 failed to qualify at Atlanta's eight-car show for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but the following week (May 3), he was runner-up to Dale Pulde at NHRA's Eastern Regional at Englishtown. His final round 6.48/225.56 lost to Pulde's Low ET shot of 6.02. He had problems at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.39/217.91 failed to qualify. Photo from Stanton, Mich., 1981. |

Notes: Tim qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.10/226.13. In the first round of eliminations, a 6.21/218.96 lost to Raymond Beadle's 5.97/243 in the "Blue Max." At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.17/231.95, and in round one, his 6.26/231.95 beat Craig Epperly's 6.42/227. In round two, a 6.31/230.17 beat John Pott's off pace 6.95/181, and he advanced into the final by running 6.48/226.70 to beat Paul Smith in the semifinals. He met up with the "Chi-Town Hustler" with Frank Hawley doing the handling in the final. Tim had problems and shut down to a 7.53/109.89 while Hawley grabbed the victory with a 6.07/231. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Grose set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 6.10/231.95 but failed to reach the finals. In April, NHRA held its Southern Nationals at Atlanta, and it was a tough field to qualify in as there were only eight spots available. Tim qualified #2 with a 5.93/233.16, but in the first round, he had trouble and slowed to a 6.74/221.67 that lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.49/196. Tim's best NHRA times were the 5.932 at Atlanta and 243.90 at Indy. |

Notes: Tim failed to qualify (fifth alternate) at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.547 226.69. He then qualified #5 in the eight-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.17/228.42. Qualifying #5 meant racing the #1 qualifier in the first round. John Force qualified #1, but he went into tire shake in their race and shut down while Tim advanced with a 6.66/190.07. In the semi-final, his 6.26/223.58 lost to Henry Harrison's 6.14/240. His 6.075/233.16 qualified #16 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A first-round 6.054/235.84 lost to John Lombardo's 6.01/236. By May, Grose was running his new Corvette. |

Notes: The car was later lettered as the Nitro Fever. We listed a 6.725/205 with this car. Tim qualified #14 at NHRA Bandimere with those exact times (205.01) on 7/25/84. Was that in this car? |

Notes: Tim started the season with a runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 at 5.918/225.00. Tim and Steve Chrisman lost traction in the first round, but his 6.728/162.16 held off Steve's 6.86/220. In round two, he advanced with a 5.959/241.93 when Frank Hawley had severe tire shake and crossed the centerline in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, another 5.959/241.93 beat a tire-smoking 6.97/154 by Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Tim's final round 6.039/247.93 finished second best to Al Segrini's 5.96/234. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.780/238.72. Unfortunately, Tim blew a motor in the first round, and his 6.798/142.40 lost to John Force's tire-smoking 6.55/245. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington, racing his Corvette for the last time before his new Firebird was finished. He qualified #15 with a 6.29 and in the opening round, the car broke against Roy Harris. |

Notes: Tim ran his Corvette at Pomona and Gainesville, but he debuted his new Trans Am at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #4. A first-round 5.94/241.28 beat John Collins, and he got past the second round to face Billy Meyer in the semis. A 5.99/243.90 lost to eventual winner Meyer's 5.88/247. He qualified for the tough eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. That was good; what was bad was that he qualified in the #5 spot, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Oswald, which Grose lost. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals on June 10. Tim qualified #6 with a 5.90/247.25. He fouled in the first round, against Gary Southern. Grose then went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 6.01 qualified #6. He lasted until the second round before losing to Dale Pulde. In Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.87/253.52 but failed to reach the finals. The Summernationals at Englishtown was NHRA's next stop, and once again, Tim qualified easily, running a 5.81 for the #7 spot in the show. He beat Dale Barlet in the first round, but smoked the tires in round two and lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Tim's best times with the Trans am were a great 5.782/257.87 run at NHRA Brainerd. He had run 5.780 in Gainesville with the Corvette. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore |

Notes: After driving the In-N-Out car at Pomona, Tim was still waiting for his new car to be completed, so he drove the "Custom Body" car at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.83/247.93, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.116/219.61 lost to John Lombardo's 5.77/251 in the "Blue Max." That was Tim's only event in the car. Notes: A sharp Dave Uyehara Omni like the Strasser's. Grose was sound asleep on the starting line in the Winternationals 1st round running 5.78 to event winner Segrini/Pisano's 5.83. I saw this. This car had less than 30 runs when Pulde drove it to the '87 Winters Semis. (ND.) - Joe Moore |

Notes: Tim debuted his new Firebird in April at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate for the show with a best of 6.108/234.98. He did much better at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, qualifying #5 with a 5.873/230.65. A first-round 5.970/240.51 lost to Jim Head's 5.94/245. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Grose failed to qualify, with his 5.99/224 being the first alternate. Yet at the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.821/230.17. He slowed to 5.979/222.88 in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Tim beat Bruce Larson in the first round with a 5.82/241.98, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 5.87/241.93 against Kenny Bernstein's 5.78/243. The NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 fuel Funny Cars showed, so you didn't have to run hard to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Tim ran a strong 5.716/248.48 to qualify #3. In the first round, he faced Bernstein, and both cars ran 5.84 (5.843/244 to Tim's 5.847/243.63), but Kenny got the win light. His next stop was Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He only qualified #10, but he beat Mark Oswald in the first round and worked his way into the final against Pulde. A good 5.85/233.16 finished runner-up to Dale's 5.78/252. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.669 at 242.06 to qualify #2 behind Bernstein's 5.62. A first-round 5.776/239.10 beat Billy Meyer, and in round two, his 5.825/240.00 took out John Collins. Grose slowed to 5.900/247.38 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." He was up against Bernstein in the final. It was a good, close race, but Kenny's 5.77/249 got the victory over Tim's 5.805/250.13. Tim qualified #10 at Bandimere at 6.056/225.00. In round one, he lost to Bernstein, 5.79/245 to 5.957/237.46. He qualified #13 at Brainerd at 5.927/240.64. In round one, he beat Billy Meyer, 6.008/239.36 to 6.48/239, but lost to John Collins in round two, 5.87/246 to 5.905/246.57. Tim qualified #10 at Indy at 5.754/258.17. Nemesis Bernstein got him in round one, again, 5.70/255 to 5.954/255.24. Tim broke through at Maple Grove, winning the inaugural NHRA Keystones. He qualified #8 at 5.745/234.78. In round one, he beat Bobby Lagana, 5.751/230.71 to 6.71/173. He beat Rick Johson in round two, 5.739/237.46 to 5.91/241. In round three, he beat Dale Pulde, 5.802/244.83, to a 13-second shut-off. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein. Tim finally broke the curse, driving around a Bernstein holeshot to take a 5.821/237.96 to 5.887/234.74 win. Tim qualified #14 at Phoenix at 6.012/227.27. In round one, he lost a close one to Al Segrni, 6.00/244 to 6.036/248.28. At the World Finals, Tim qualified #13 at 5.857/248.34. In round one, he upset Dale Pulde, 5.849/243.11 to 5.88/250. Tim did not show up for his second-round race against Kenny Bernstein. His best times were the 5.669 at Englishtown and 258.17 at Indy. |

Notes: Tim won NHRA Winters with a 5.618/250.69 bests (Tim's best NHRA national event ET for the year). He ran a controversial first 5.40 run at NED one week after Gainesville. Roland Leong witnessed it and said it was a monster. Tim won a $50,000 payday at IHRA Bristol. Tim also tried a combo with header pipes exiting the top hood area directly in front of body A posts at the outside edges of the windshield. Benefit: All kinds of downforce. Problem: Absolutely blinded by header flames when at all dark outside! Photo from Indy 1986. Ran the same paint scheme with Skoal Bandit, Dan Young Chevy, and blank side panels in '86. | After winning the NHRA Winternationals with his Firebird, Tim showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with his new Corvette. He qualified #13 with a 5.95/235.97. In the first round, a 5.97/209.59 lost to John Force's 5.81/247. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.80/246.30. A 5.83/246.03 beat Steve Hodkinson's 5.98/240 in the first round, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.98/83.28 that lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/244 in the "Blue Max" Mustang. Grose qualified well again at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 5.90/236.28 was #7 in the field. A first-round 5.89/231.77 beat Gary Phillips, but another 5.89 at 239.87 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 5.78/249. Tim got another big win at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 and, in the final, met Kenny Bernstein. The "Budweiser King" blew an engine, and Tim ran 5.87/231 for the victory. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.91/245.49. Unfortunately, he lost to Bernstein in the first round. Grose competed at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove. It was an eight-car field, and Tim's 6.05/219.51 qualified #7. He hurt some parts on the run and could not run in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. A 6.09/226.13 qualified #10, and a 6.00/234.98 lost to Force's 5.80/252 in the first round. A week later (July 6), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #4. He beat Scott Kalitta's out-of-shape Mustang in the first round with a 5.94/239.36. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Bernstein. He barely made the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, with his 5.90/243.37 holding down the #15 spot. He beat Brad Tuttle in the first round before losing to Force's 5.74 in round two. A couple of weeks later (July 27), he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.06/229.00 but lost to Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" in the opening round. Not sure why he raced his old Firebird at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, but he did well with it there, reaching the semifinals before losing to Bernstein. He was back driving the Corvette when he won the US Funny Car Championships a week later. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.88/241.93, and Tim's final round 5.83/238.76 beat low qualifier Jim Head for the title. Grose's next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.87/250.69, and in round one, his 6.04/237.46 beat Norm Day's on-fire 6.06/238. He went to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but unfortunately, his 5.92/251.32 best was good for the second alternate. He then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.82/232.01 qualified #8. In the opening round, his 5.93/220.15 beat Kalitta's 6.07/221, and in round two, he put Paul Smith on the trailer with a 5.97/228.07. But eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.68/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped his 6.16/199.91 from advancing in the semifinals. Tim then went to the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals. His 5.74/241.22 qualified #11. He ran 5.73/238.15 in the opening round to defeat Raymond Beadle's 5.79/250 in the "Blue Max." In round two, he fouled and shut off against Oswald. The 251.32 was Tim's best NHRA speed; he typically did not run high mph numbers. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Did Tim run 260 mph somewhere in 1987? Tim was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot for the sixteen-car field with a 5.77/240.19. In the first round, he advanced when his opponent, Doc Halladay, got out of shape and crossed the centerline. But in round two, Grose's Firebird broke and Graeme Cowin soloed into the semifinals. |

Notes: Grose qualified #8 for the sixteen-car field at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.66. He beat Darrell Amberson in round one, before losing to eventual winner Mark Oswald in round two. This was the car with his vortFormer generators placed all over large flat spoiler (later outlawed). Photo from Columbus 1988. Confirmed 5.552 at Indy 1988 and 258.10 at Memphis 1988. Where was the 5.42 at 269 run? |

Notes: Tim was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.51/258.39. In the first round, both he and Dominic Santucci smoked the tires, but Tim's 7.05/160.19 came out on top. A 5.78/237.57 lost to eventual winner Tony McCallum's 5.71/253. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.71/212.36 best. In early July, he qualified #6 at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan, but he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Doc Halladay. Grose qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he lost to John Force in the first round. He competed at the Wolverine Nationals at US 131 Martin, Michigan, on August 13, but he smoked the tires in the first race and lost to Johnny West. The race was run "Chicago Style," meaning the cars would each run two rounds, with the two Low ET cars running in the final. On Tim's second run, he beat Tom Hoover's 6.01/209 with a 5.96/203.83. Tim's 5.96 best failed to make the final round match-up. A week later (August 20), he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" of the sixteen-car field with a 6.04/248.89. He improved to a 5.84/205.24 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get around Scott Kalitta's 5.50/272. Unfortunately, at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 5.57/257.36 failed to qualify for the show. He also attempted to qualify at the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but his 5.75/252.10 failed to get into the field. Tim's bad luck held over into IHRA events when his 5.78/241.30 (second alternate) failed to make the field at Bristol for the Fallnationals. At the NHRA season-ending World Finals at Pomona, he was the third alternate with a 5.60/248.96. The best NHRA times were a 5.578/257.36 first alternate DNQ at Indy. Did Tim really run 5.47/268 this year (ET at Epping again or is this an error referring to his 1986 run)? Removing those times until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Tim was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May. He qualified #12 with a 5.71/259.29, but he lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. Tim did not qualify at another NHRA race until the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. There he ran 5.48/247.79 to qualify #12. In the first round, he faced Ed McCulloch, and Grose had problems and shut down to a 9.58/90.17 loss. Tim qualified #5 at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his chute fell out while running Tom Hoover in the opening round. His next NHRA event was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd, where he qualified #5 with a great 5.47/263.77. Both he and Al Hofmann had problems in round one, but Grose's 6.10/252.17 finished ahead of Al's 6.18/163. He slowed down even more in round two, to a 6.30/173.64 that lost to Jim White's 5.41/265.
