Notes: Grove was driving this car early in the year at Fremont for a best of five match race against Steve Bovan's Nova. Grove was having trouble this day as the best he could run was 9.96/145.63, and he lost the match to the Chevy that ran a best of 9.44/152. | Injected fuel. Ran this car in 1965 and early 1966 before debuting a stretched Mustang. This car was sold mid-year to Delaware's Billy McDuell, who ran it as the She Devil. Notes: Injected fuel AWB. Tommy debuted the car at Biloxi on April 30, 1966. He ran this car into 1967 before debuting his first flip-top Mustang. - DD | At the car's debut at Biloxi, it was still running a 427 wedge. For the first time out, he didn't do too bad; Grove defeated Tom Sturm's Corvair in a best of three match. He also reset the track record to 9.50 at 144.92. (See separate entry for the Wedge-powered version). Grove was at Virginia Beach on July 9 for a best of three match against Huston Platt. Huston's "Dixie Twister" Nova was billed as the nation's fastest Chevy. Grove got a good leave in their first race, and his 8.48 beat Platt easily. A handicap was accidentally given to Huston in the second race, and although Tom followed the Nova to the stripe, it was decided that he won that race as well. Grove was already declared the winner of the match, but the two had another race, and Grove won again, this time with an 8.46. He also ran 8.53 at Virginia Beach, VA 1966 (6/24/66 Drag News). Tommy ran the 171.42 mph at Fremont, CA 1966 (11/11/66 Drag World).

Notes: Tommy Grove was really getting his act together in '67. Near the end of the season, a supercharger was added to his SOHC motor and the car began to lay down some numbers. On October 22, he was at Fremont for the exhibition Car Championships. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Terry Hedrick. Just a week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. He upset "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the opening round of eliminations, but he lost in round two. Grove was at Lions on November 4 for the East-West Championships. He got some payback on Hedrick in round two where he beat him with a 7.98. He faced Nicholson in the final and despite running a strong 8.10/167.59 he finished runner-up to "Dyno's" 7.97/174. At OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet, Grove went up against Hedrick in his first race and Grove was late off the line. Terry's 8.23/180 held off the Mustang's quicker 8.11/185.90. Notes: Tom was on top of his game in 1968; his best time of 7.52 set early in the year would have been a lot lower if the car had not been totaled in a crash at Virginia Beach, the same place he had run his Top Speed of 202 in May. But in June he had just finished running 201 and his chute failed to release. He hit the brakes hard until the master cylinder let go. Grove ended up skidding sideways into a tree and demolishing the Mustang. He finished out the season with his 1967 car. Before the crash, he had beaten the best. On April 7, he had a hiccup at Kingston where he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super 'Cuda" in a best of three match. Reyes won their first race with an 8.12/187 when Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand. There had never been a 7-second Funny Car run at Kingston until their second race when both ran sevens. Grove's 7.99/187.50 prevailed over Reyes' quicker 7.98. In the final race, Larry got the holeshot and his 8.10 went on to win the match over Grove's quicker 7.98. On April 14 he beat Don Nicholson in a best of three match. Another match race victory came at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 3. There he stopped Arnie Beswick three straight. His times were 5.15/148.50 over a fouling Beswick, followed by a track record 5.05/150 and a 5.35/140. He was at Aquasco for the Funny Car Invitational, but after the first-round it was rained out. He had run 8.63/184.42 (Top Speed) in a first-round solo, and he was Aquasco's track mph record holder at 187.88. Tom won the Cecil County Fuel Showdown on May 18. He ran 7.79/189.06 over Roger Lindamood (8.10/179), and in the semifinals, he reset both ends of the track record with a 7.64/194.38 over Roy Gay who shut off. In the final, a 7.65/192.70 stopped Jim Liberman's 7.85/182. On June 8, he beat the "Hemi-Cuda" of Fred Goeske three straight at Capitol. In the first race, his 7.71 at a new track record speed of 196.92 beat Goeske's 7.96/170. The speed was 5 mph faster than the old track record. Tommy got the ET record as well in their second race with his 7.64 at 190.66 beating the 'Cuda's 7.99/178. A final 7.76/196.92 finished up the match. He ran his lowest ET of the year at a match race at Cecil County against Liberman on June 19. He beat Jim in the first race with a track record 7.52 at 197.36. In the second race, a 7.81/193.12 did the deed, winning the match. - Ron Howard

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and Paul Shedilik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970.

Notes: After wrecking his primary car at Virginia Beach, Grove ran his '67 Mustang until he totaled it as well. So he used Ed Schartman's back-up Comet and stuffed one of his potent Cammers in it. On September 1 at Minnesota Dragways for an eight-car event, Tom drove this car to a first-round, Low ET of the meet, 7.62/191.88 over Dick Loehr (8.02/175.43). In the semis, he ran a 7.72/191.48 over a fouling Roger Lindamood (7.80/191.88). In the final, a 7.71/191.08 beat Pat Minick's 8.12/181.44 in the Chi-Town Hustler 'Cuda. - Ron Howard

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford-powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and Paul Shedlik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970. Tommy ran 7.28 at 203 in 1969 to become one of the first 200 mph funny cars. Grove achieved notoriety for cracking 200 mph while at the same time rumored to be experimenting with an exotic fuel (hydrazine?) | Grove had a bad year in '69. At least in comparison to '68 and '70. He had lots of transmission problems and was also trying to sort out the Boss 429 as well as running the proven SOHC. He failed to qualify at both the Irwindale New Year's Day Race and the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9 where an 8.08 was only good for the eighth alternate. He also failed to qualify at Bakersfield for the March Meet. Grove was the Killer Car on the match race trail in '68 and was feared by everyone who matched against him, but '69 was not the same. On March 30, he was at Aquasco for a best of three match against Lew Arrington. He won the first race with a shut off 8.61/168.22 when Lew got out of shape, but in the second race while coming to the line, it looked like a blower let go, but it was actually his motor self-destructing. Lew soloed in the "Brutus" to two more wins for the match race win. He ran Fred Goeske at Capitol on April 12 and lost two straight even though he set Top Speed at 195. He ran better at Aquasco on May 4 for their fourth annual Funny Car Invitational. A first-round 7.91/191.08 beat Tom McEwen's off pace 8.23 and another 7.91/191.88 in the semis advanced over Frank Oglesby in the Don Nicholson Cougar. In the final, Tom fouled against Jim Liberman's 7.86/189. On May 27, Aquasco held another eight-car Funny Car race. Grove's 8.10/188.66 in the first round, lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.83/197. After his loss, Tommy came back out later and made two runs, an 8.12/189.86 and an 8.09/191.88. Liberman met Grove at York US 30 on June 7 for another match race and JJ beat Grove three straight races. On June 21, Grove was at Lakeland for the Memphis Funny Car Championships. He fouled against Dick Harrell in the first round, and shut down to an 8.81/165. He had some more bad luck the next day at Kingston when he lost a best of three match to Paula Murphy. On July 3, Edgewater held an eight-car Funny Car show. Unfortunately, Charlie Allen strapped a 7.37 Low ET of the meet run on Tom in the first round, putting the Mustang on the trailer. He also lost in the first round, at Capitol's King of King's Funny Car event on July 16. This time, Oglesby's 7.98/178 beat Tom's ailing 8.71/187.88. He ran much better at the Cars Magazine Meet on July 20 where he set a 7.42 track record at 201 in the first round, while beating Al Graeber. In round two a 7.74/197.36 beat Ron Rivero's out-of-shape pass. But then the rain came and the rest of the race was to be run on Sunday. Grove had prior commitments and could not run Sunday. Liberman had a rematch with Grove at Capitol on September 20 and once again JJ prevailed although the times were close. Jim ran a best of 7.28/199.10 to Grove's 7.29/203. The following day (September 21) he ran at the third annual New England Funny Car Championships where he set a 7.30 Epping track record in the first round, while losing to Roger Lindamood's 7.33/198. Tom's speed was 199.50. An interesting thing happened to Grove on October 11 when he showed up to run at the OCIR Funny Car Invitational. He was informed that his competition license had expired back in Jan and he was unable to run. After straightening out the drivers license issue, he showed up at Irwindale on October 18 for the East/West Championships, but lost to Liberman's 7.76/195 in the first round, with an out-of-shape 8.23. All cars had run the first-round with the losers going into a bracket two while the winners ran bracket one. So Tom then met Rich Siroonian in bracket two, but his 8.02/184.80 lost to Rich's 7.53/199. He competed at Sears Point on November 2, but lost a blower early in the race. - Ron Howard

The "Going Thing" was replaced when it became outdated. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke and James Ibusuki). | Ford-powered Funny Car's won more than their share of races in '69, with Danny Ongais driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang to many victories and Gas Ronda's Mustang also winning a few events. Dick Loehr also won a couple of events. But for '70, there was only one strong Ford-powered car, and that was Grove's. Thompson switched his cars to the unproven Boss 429 engine, Ronda had his career end with his fire at the AHRA Winternationals, and Loehr went Pro Stock racing. Grove, like Don Nicholson in Pro Stock and Pete Robinson in T/F, was Ford's strong holdout. He won many races and matches but also seemed to set track ET and speed records at will. His season started at the Irwindale New Year's Day race. Tommy qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.48. He got sideways in round one, but still won with an 8.45/192.76 over Bob Pickett. In the second round, Danny Ongais ran Low ET of the meet with a 7.42/196 over Grove's 7.71/194.38. On January 18 at OCIR for their second All-Pro race, he beat Randy Walls in the first round, and a 7.55 in the semifinal beat Johnny Wright, but in the final against Gene Conway, his trans let go, and he had to settle for runner-up. He did better at the AHRA Winternationals on January 25 with a big win. He ran a first-round 7.58 over Mart Higginbotham, who fouled. A second-round 7.5 beat Tom McEwen's new Duster at 7.89. In the semifinal, a 7.58 advanced over Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian, who fouled away a 7.46. In the final, his 7.54/196.65 beat Jake Johnston's 7.67/198.23 in the Blue Max. He broke again in the semifinals on February 15 at the Fremont Northern Nationals despite turning 7.37/195.22 and 7.39/195.22. On April 5, Aquasco held an eight-car show, and Tom won a close 7.90/184.80 to 7.91/182.92 first-round race over Al Graeber. He lost in the semis to Bobby Wood's 7.68/193 with a 7.91/183.66. He faced Don Prudhomme in a match race at Capitol on April 11, and he won his first race with a 7.50/193.12 over Prudhomme's quicker 7.35/202.24. Prudhomme came back to win the next two rounds and the match. Grove was supposed to be at Connecticut the next day for a best of three match against Hank Clark in the "Chapman" Camaro, but he failed to show. He did better at his match against Malcolm Durham on May 10 at US 13 in Delaware, where he beat Durham three straight with a 7.71/189.46 best. In May at the Super Stock Nationals, he lost early when Larry Reyes' 7.38 beat his 7.60. Late in May, he was at Southeastern Dragway for a four-car show. He beat the "Invader" Corvette in his first race with a 6.38 on the 1,000 feet. Track. In his second race, he improved to 6.08 to beat Curtis Wasson and win the match. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.25/201.34 in winning at Minneapolis on May 30 for an eight-car show. He beat Ron Rivero's 7.41/187.50 in the final with a 7.29/198.67. And on May 31, they ran again at Minneapolis, and again Grove won. He set Low ET with a 7.32 and beat Bryan Teal's (Nelson Carter) 7.47/196 in the final with a 7.44/193.96. At Tri-City on June 7, he lost to Larry Arnold in the first round, when he got out-of-shape and ran off the track. In June, Arnold got him again in the first round, at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show where Grove set Top Speed of the meet at 205.01 but lost to Larry's 7.19/202 to his 7.48 182.55. Bruce Larson faced off with Tom on June 27 at Maple Grove. In the first race, Bruce's 7.75/173 won when Grove blew a head gasket. Larson beat the backup car of Ken Poffenberger in the second race, but by the third race, Grove had fixed his Cammer and beat Larson's 7.49/190 with a 7.39/190.26. He lost the match but had the satisfaction of having the Low ET. On July 11, for Capitol's King of King's meet, Tom's first-round 7.42/188.28 beat a fouling Don Schumacher (7.46/170). A second-round 7.16/201.78 beat Roy Gay's 7.44/197, but in the semifinal, Prudhomme's 7.16/206 beat his 7.33/198.22. At Blaney in July, Grove set both ends of the track record at 7.17/205. In July, Edgewater held an eight-car show, and a first-round 7.40/196.12 beat Sid Foster's 8.44 out-of-shape pass. He lost to Bryan Teal's 7.60/154 in the semis when he had to lift and shut off. Grove ran a 7.50 best over Leonard Hughes at the Rockford Manufacturer's meet. He showed up with a new unpainted car and only won one of his three races. He won again on July 26 at the Dallas Funny Car Championships. The track was 900 feet, and Grove held the track record at 5.95 going into this race. A first-round 5.97 beat Houston Platt's 6.28. A second-round 5.95 beat Dick Harrell, and in the semis, he ran another 5.95 over Charlie Allen. In the final, his third 5.95 beat Larry Arnold. In August, the two foes had a match race at Suffolk, where Arnold won the first race with a 7.51/161 when Grove fouled away a 7.42/195.64. He then took the next two wins with runs of 7.17/200.00 and a track record 7.13 at 202.60. On August 10, he was up against Lew Arrington for a match race at Epping. Tom's 7.25/196.92 beat Lew's 7.54/196.06 in the first race, and an even quicker 7.22/201.78 over Arrington's 7.58/186 made it two straight for the match race win. Another win came at Minnesota on September 6 over an eight-car field. A first-round 7.31/194.38 beat Charlie Allen's 7.37/197, and in the semifinal, a 7.29/197.80 beat a shutting-off Terry Hedrick. In the final, his 7.27/201.34 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.45/204.54. He was at Suffolk on September 13, where he ran 7.03/203.60 in the opening round over Arrington and a second-round 7.00/205.46 beat Paula Murphy. He was to face Gene Snow in the final, but the car failed to fire. Tom finished the year with another victory on October 3 at the Dixie Finals at Blaney, where he ran Low ET and Top Speed at 7.17/205 before beating Pat Foster in the Hawaiian in the final. — Ron Howard

Notes: Although the car signage says "Boss 429," that is a 427 Cammer in the picture. Unsure whether Grove ran a 429 at some point, but it was not uncommon for Ford funny car teams to revert to the proven (if increasingly difficult to source) SOHC motor if the newer 429 hemi failed to get the job done. Car received a two-page spread feature in the 9/72 issue of SS&DI. - RT | Tom Grove was successful in '71, running his Ford-powered Funny Car. No one else was able to make the Ford run as well in Funny Car racing as he was. He was much like Bob Glidden had been in Pro Stock in the '80's. Unfortunately, while Glidden's run at the top lasted more than five years, Grove's was much shorter. In one of Tom's first appearances of the year, he downed Tim Beebe two straight using the Boss 429. The following week he ran a best of 6.98/213 using the SOHC. This was at a race where the Ramchargers couldn't go better than a 7.03. Early in April he was at Aquasco for an eight-car show. Grove had a small fire on the line in the first round, and his opponent, Pete Hill soloed. After the fire was extinguished, Tommy came out and ran a single. It was a 6.98 at a track record 213.76. He was going to try to better this on another run, but he had a blower explode and was done for the day. On April 10, he ran a 6.82/218 at Miami that was equaled at Suffolk on May 9. His best time of 6.76 came at Capitol on May 19 using the SOHC. He was at Suffolk for a best of three match race against Mike Burkhart. A late 7.11/207.36 lost to Mike's 7.21/206 in their first race, but Grove came back to win the next two races and the match with runs of 6.98/211.26 and 6.83/212.26. The speed was a track record and the ET tied Gene Snow's track record. At the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Tom had Low ET of eliminations with a 6.88 before losing to a holeshot by Charlie Therwhanger in the semifinals. Aquasco held a Ford vs Chevy Funny Car race. Tommy ran really well, running Low ET in the opening round with a 6.93/206.42 over Gene Conway. In the second round his 7.29/202.24 beat Terry Hedrick and a 7.27/205.46 won his third race over Malcolm Durham. On May 27 he was at Minnesota for a four-car, round-robin race. In the first race, Grove's 7.69/173.74 lost to Butch Maas' 7.25/168 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race a 7.37/207.85 beat Hedrick and the two ran again in the third round with the same results, Grove's 7.56/202.70 beat Hedrick's 7.82/198. Another semifinal finish came at Bristol on June 20 where he lost to Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" at the IHRA Springnationals. He was back at Aquasco for the President's Cup Championships where a 6.96/210.28 (the only "six" of eliminations and Top Speed) beat Roger Lindamood's 7.17/178. But in the semifinals, while pulling away from Mike Burkhart his transmission exploded and Mike overtook his coasting car. On July 7, Grove was runner-up to Jake Johnston at the King of Kings Funny Car meet. On August 18 in Baltimore, Maryland, Tom's car hauler and car burnt to the ground, and he was forced to use his '70 car as a backup. Then, on September 3 in Orlando, Florida, Grove won a Funny Car meet with 7.51/191 times in the old car. Times were close to the track record for Orlando. He had no trouble booking match races, since promoters liked the fact that he was one of the few Ford-powered funnies left. — Ron Howard

Notes: Grove was at Suffolk in August for its third annual Dixie Classic. It was a sixteen-car field and he ran a strong 6.91 in round two to beat Jake Crimmins’ close 6.92. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Jake Johnston in the semifinals. At the 1972 AHRA World Championships (Fremont, CA), Tommy had to beat Tom McEwen twice in order to advance to the final round. In the second round, he used a holeshot and a 6.613/216.34 to beat the Goose's 6.53. In the semifinal he was to have raced Dale Pulde (Mickey Thompson Pinto), but Pulde broke on the burnout and McEwen got back in on the break rule via his Low ET loser (6.53) status. This time Tommy used a better 6.54 to beat Tom's 6.63, setting up a final against Gene Snow. In the final, Tommy beat Gene to the finish line 6.688/213.27 to a 7.368/131.77 and then exploded the engine and burst into flames. After Tommy put out the fire and got the car stopped, he was informed that he had been disqualified for crossing the center line. There was quite a furor about this ruling because many witnesses claimed it was Snow who crossed the center line. AHRA officials held firm and declared Snow the winner although according to Drag Racing USA, Gene privately gave Tommy the prize money, but not the title. - TN | Car received two-page feature treatment in the 9/72 issue of SS&DI; pictured running 427 Cammer. - RT

Notes: Grove showed up at Beeline with his still unfinished Mustang for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.91/202.24 to qualify #29 in the 32-car field, but an opening round 7.05/196.50 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.49/220. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the eleventh alternate. He also could not qualify for the sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ended up as the first alternate. Jim Adolph qualified, but his car broke, and he was unable to run in eliminations, so Grove got into the field. Mert Littlefield shut down early into his run in the opening round, and Tommy advanced with a 7.69. In round two, his 7.56 lost to Dave Uyehara's 7.18 in Larry Huff's car. On April 28, he was a Capitol for an eight-car show that had all the cars run two rounds of racing, with the two Low ET's cars meeting in the final. Grove's 6.56/216 defeated Clare Sanders' quicker 6.54/189 in the "Ramchargers" car in his first race. In his second race, he faced Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max. Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand, and he backed out of it while Tharp ran 6.62/195 to win. Grove ran really well at the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway in May. It was a sixteen-car show, and Grove made it into the semifinal where Jim Nicoll fouled against him. Unfortunately, Grove hurt some valvetrain parts and repaired them for his final round showdown with Don Prudhomme. Those repairs did not work out as the car failed to fire for the final, and Tom had to watch as the "Snake" made an easy solo for the win. He qualified #12 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he damaged his engine and could not compete in eliminations. Near the end of June, he went to US 13, Delmar, for a best-of-three-match race against Shirley Muldowney. He won all three of their races, running a best of 7.09/202.24. In July, he was in New England for a sixteen-car show. The car got out of shape in the first round, and the rear almost hit the guardrail. After he straightened it out, he took off in hot pursuit of Dale Pulde, who was running 7.03/172 in the other lane. Grove lost with an 8.61/202. He came back out later for a consolation race with Fred Goeske. Fred broke in their race, and Grove ran 6.82/207. Grove was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56 qualified #8. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.79 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.50. Grove ended his '73 season at Beeline for its sixth annual Funny Car Nationals held on December 2. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.78/213.76 qualified #4. He improved to 6.68 as just 192.30 in the opening round to beat Roger Garten's 7.28/156 in the "Warhorse." But an even better 6.65/217.38 fell to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.53/210 in the second round. Several DNQs at NHRA national events with best times of 6.888/211.76 in qualifying #12 at Columbus. We remember the 6.42/227 but need to validate track and year.

Notes: On August 14, Tommy was at Englishtown for its Race of Champions. His car failed to fire for his race against Gene Snow in the first round. He came back out later for a consolation race where he ran 6.42/228.42 (Top Speed) to beat Billy Meyer. In September, Grove was at Maryland International for a best of three match race against Al Segrini, who was driving the "Black Magic" Vega. Unfortunately, Grove lost two straight. The car went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Tommy shut down. In the second race, his 6.61/224.42 lost to Segrini's 6.57/220. At the Eighth Annual New England Funny Car Nationals, Grove looked like he was on his way to the win over the 32-car field. In the opening round, his 6.45/225 defeated Arnie Swensen's 6.76/201. In round two, he set Top Speed with his 6.33/228.42 beating Tom Prock's 6.86/193 in the "Custom Body" car. The third round saw Grove set a new track record with his 6.31/225 taking out Kosty Ivanof's 6.48. Unfortunately, the run came at a cost as Grove burned a few pistons. He could not return for the semifinal, and Ivanof replaced him in the field. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, the rear end broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. He also raced at the Irwindale Team Funny Car Championships late in October. All cars there were to make three runs, with the two Low ET cars scheduled to mee in the final. Grove did not run quick enough to reach the final. Tommy also ran 6.54 at Englishtown and 6.55/229 at the Epping Grande American event.

Notes: Tommy went back to an SOHC Ford in the Setzer car. Setzer name used only for bookings. Was Grove's deal. | Tommy Grove loved the 427 SOHC Ford motor. Years after he retired from the sport he still wanted to build an SOHC just to see what it could do. For the Ford lovers, it must have been strange seeing him wheeling the Barry Setzer Vega, but in August of '75 he showed up at Englishtown for an eight-car show with the Ford engine between the frame rails. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, of eliminations with a 6.76/215.82, but in the semifinals, he shut down at half-track against Bill Leavitt.

Notes: Grove won the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown in April. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.40/225.56 before beating Arne Swenson in the final with a 6.43/193.54. Early in May, he was at Maple Grove for the annual Dutch Classic. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.73/210.28 beat Swenson's 6.91/199. He had to race Arne again in the semifinals as Dodger Glenn had broken in the "Frantic Ford," and the "break rule" was in effect. Swenson was the Low ET loser from the first-round, so he faced off with Grove again. Once again, Grove got the "win" light with his 6.58/206.89, beating Swenson's 7.02/180. Tommy had to face "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and the car developed blower problems, and he had to shut off, giving JJ a solo 6.42/198 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show. A 7.00/196.07 beat Joe Jacono in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jimmy King's 7.29 with a 6.99/203.16. He faced Pete Hill in the final, and Grove caught a great light that saw his 6.75/220.58 beat Pete's 6.66/192. He also won the Napierville Funny Car Challenge race. Before qualifying, he had to rebuild his engine. Tommy ran a best of 6.55/216.86 to win, and Al Segrini fouled against him in the final. His next stop was at Atco Dragway for the CARS Magazine Championships held on May 25. Grove's car was ailing this day, but his opening round 8.55/210.28 still beat Tom Prock's off-pace 9.03/130. But his 7.43/221.67 in the semifinal lost to Liberman's 6.95/201.

Notes: Tom parked the Mustang and the early Setzer car and ran only the 1975 Lindblad car in 1976 and 1977. Tommy used the Setzer name only for bookings. It was Grove's deal. Grove was at Atco in August for its FC Nationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 6.68/222.77 lost to eventual winner Tommy Ivo's 6.57/196. At the 1976 New England Funny Car Nationals, he was runner-up to RC Sherman, 6.37 to 6.81. Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (May 2007): p. 35 - MB
