Notes: Steel body with chopped top. Engine was set up with fuel injection with small beer keg for fuel tank and ran about 70% nitro. Transmission was C&O TorqueFlite. Engine was later traded for blown engine that was first used in the Durachrome Bug. This car was originally built for the street and sat for years in Warren's den and was converted back to the street in 1975.

Notes: Warren Gunter was in high school when he bought original body on '32 chassis. While going to engineering school he designed and built car and began racing while in graduate school. Car was orginally designed as a street car, but it ended up on the strip instead. Debuted in 1965 with small block Chevy and was classed as an AHRA B/FA. Later BBC moved it up to A/FA. Car ran mid 8's and won at least a few injected only shows. Normally ran at Lions, but ventured to Irwindale and OCR. The car still exists set up for street with small block and original chrome megaphone headers by brother Tim.

Notes: The first time out for this car in competition was at Lions on June 28. Gunter debuted the car with 9-second runs at 166. Warren was at OCIR on July 19 for the PDA Championships. His 8.54 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. His 8.68 lost to Mike Van Sant's 8.14 in the "Invader in the opening round." The following week, Gunter was at Irwindale for another sixteen car show. In the opening round, he had drivetrain problems and shut off against Danny Ongais. On August 2, Lions held an eight-car show with so many cars they formed two eight-car fields. Warren failed to qualify for the "quick" eight, but he was in the second program. Unfortunately, he blew a transmission in his first-round race against the "Mako Shark." Shortly after that (August 10), the "Durachrome Bug" was at Woodburn's Funny Car Festival. In the opening round, an off-pace 9.47/151.00 lost to Ken Smith's 8.61/174. He also lost in the first round at Irwindale's sixteen car show held on August 16. This time Gas Ronda's 7.54/194 stopped him. At the end of the month, he competed at the Drag News Nationals held at Lions. Gordon Mineo's 8.01/157 put the bug's 8.43/173.74 on the trailer in the first round. Irwindale held an eight-car show on September 1, and Gunter qualified on the "bump" with a 7.91. Tom Sturm's Corvair failed to fire for its opening race against Warren, so he soloed with a 9.36/109.33. In the semifinal, the car got crossed-up, and Gunter's 9.81/91.00 lost to Van Sant's 7.97/187. The photo is of the car at Lions just after getting sponsors. The Don Burns lettering was added to the space in front of the Durachrome name. This chassis was damaged at OCIR, and new chassis was built just before two full seasons on a USA national tour. The second car had darker shadowing along the body lines.

Notes: Warren was at Irwindale on January 1 for its New Year's Day race. He failed to qualify but got into the show when Fred Goeske's Road Runner broke. Unfortunately, the car developed problems in the first round, and opponent Gordon Mineo soloed into the second round. On March 28, Warren was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.01/177.86 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 7.74/157. Gunter was back at OCIR on May 2 for its Big Four Championships. It was not a good outing. Warren stuffed it into the guardrail just past the finish line during qualifying. He was ok, not so much the car. | Very early picture of the first chassis under the original body. C&O TorqueFlite and Chrysler rear end. It was a real handful and ended up along the fence at OCIR, and new chassis was built. The original car weighed less than 1800 lbs. Even with the new lower and stronger chassis, the car still wanted to make a quick "jog" at about half-track. Every run was a surprise. Notes: This new photo is the second chassis during the last year of touring. Note that the spoiler on the roof has been removed, and a large aluminum spoiler is now on the rear. I can't remember where this was taken. We ran consistent mid 7's on tour with this set-up. Oh, to be young again. - WG | Gunter was at Beeline Dragway on February 21 for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and his 7.84 qualified easily. In the first round, he faced Sam Miller but was shut off with a water leak, giving Miller a solo into round two. In July, Gunter went to Numidia Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Bob Parmer's AA/FA Fiat. Warren caught Bob napping in their first race, and his 7.56/181.08 beat the Fiat's much quicker 7.13/187. Bob won the second race with a 7.69/185 when the VW broke and slowed to 7.95/138.46. Gunter came back in the third race to win the match with a 7.50/185.56, beating Bob's 7.85/173. On August 12, Warren was at Numidia Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Pete Hill. It wasn't the little VW's day as it lost all three races. Still, Gunter did manage a 7.22/189.86 best. His other runs were 7.62/157.89 and 7.31/186.32. That wasn't far off of Pete's 7.18/203 best. In September, this little bug went all the way to the final at New England's Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32-car field, and Warren beat Frank Oglesby in the opening round and a 7.65 at only 145.16 in round two beat Fred Goeske. He beat Dean LaPole's Chevy-powered "King Camaro" in the third round, and Bob Cain crossed the centerline against him in the semifinals. He went up against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and the VW went every which way but straight, slowing to a 10.69 runner-up finish to Jim's 6.95. In a December issue of Dag News, the car was offered for sale for $4,500. The ad did not state if the engine was included.

Notes: Mike Gurtizen started out the season as the rear-engined Gent's dragster driver. Gurtizen turned 105.33 mph to take top eliminator honors at Convair Field in Allentown on Apr. 29. On May 6 at Allentown, Gurtizen won the dragster class with 105.74 mph. Mick McMillen took over the driving duties for the Allentown meet on June 3. He clocked 108.3 mph. Gurtizen was back in the driver's seat on June 17 when the club raced their dragster at Woodbine Airfield in New Jersey. He set a new top speed record for the East Coast with 116.73 mph. On June 24 at Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland, Gurtizen set another new East Coast record with 125 mph. He took top eliminator honors, too. Back at Allentown on July 1, Gurtizen won a trophy for the dragster class and took the meet's top speed with 120.77 mph. At the NHRA Eastern Regionals at Woodbine, Gurtizen won trophies for top eliminator, dragster class, and meet's top time with 123 mph. Unfortunately, the dragster was demolished on its final run when the throttle jammed and Gurtizen was unable to stop it before it sped off the end of the track. He turned off the ignition after crossing the finish line, but the car continued to run on detonation. The brakes also failed through repeated use trying to stop the car.
