Notes: The year is 1977, and the one and only Jungle Jim decided to let Ron Attebury campaign a Top Fuel car under the Jungle Jim banner. Attebury raced with a degree of success that year and ran most of the East Coast Regional events. - Berserko Bob Doerrer | Ron started the '77 season at Beeline for the PRO race, where he ran 6.32/212.26 on 1/14/77. He ran attended Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 position, forcing him to run low qualifier John Wiebe in the first round. Attebury came through with the win, running 6.35/208.32, while John smoked the tires and lost. In round two, he faced another tough customer in Gary Beck. Once again, he prevailed, beating Gary's 6.52 with a 6.44. In the semifinals, he ran a good 6.39/222.22, but not good enough as Rance McDaniel beat him with a 6.26/221. At the NHRA Wintersnationals, the team did not qualify, ending up in the 12th alternate slot (times unknown). Ron qualified #14 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.14/229.59. In the first round, his quick leaving 6.20/229.59 beat Bob Struksnes' quicker-but-later 6.09/238.72. In the second round, he slowed to 6.46/208.33 in a loss to Jeb Allen's 5.99/223.88. In Seattle, Randy qualified #7 with a solid 5.950/229.59. Unfortunately, he shut off to a 16-second run against Terry Capp, who ran 6.26/226.70 to take the first-round victory. At the World Finals, Ron again found the fives with a 5.984/230.76 to qualify #10. Shirley Muldowney ended his day early, however, with a 5.927/242.58 to 6.219/229.00 victory. Where was the 232.55 run? Jungle Jim association was in name only. Confirmed hometown in 1977 Summernationals TV coverage.
