Notes: Winner at NHRA D6 Nl'akapxm BC 1989 with a 6.19 230.42 over Roger Bateman. Early in August, Bucky was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. His 6.07/230.53 qualified second behind Chris Christensen's 6.00/234. In the opening round, his 6.14/229.41 defeated Mike Gordon's 6.27/221. Terry Mullins fouled against him in round two, and he advanced with a 6.12/229.82. Another 6.12 at 228.83 stopped Lou Gasparelli's 6.20/223 in the semifinal. He faced Pat Austin for the title. Pat qualified third and had run steady 6.0s to reach the final. But this was Bucky's day, and a consistent 6.12/228.19 scored him his first NHRA National event win over Pat's 6.15/226. Sometimes's uncle knows best! The following week (August 13), he was at Firebird Raceway for the Nightfire Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #3 with a 6.60/212.68. He soloed with a 6.50/213.69 when Vic Phillips broke. His times continued to improve in the semifinal, where his 6.40/217.83 (Top Speed) beat John Weaver's 6.60/212. This time, his final-round opponent was Rick Henkelman. Once again, Bucky picked up the trophy, running Low ET at 6.37/216.78 to win over Rick's 6.59/206 runner-up effort. Notes: Bucky was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.12/225.67 qualified #8 in the field. He beat Mike Gordon in the first round, with a 6.16/225.90 before losing to eventual winner Bob Newberry in round two. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals, he qualified #4 with a 6.13/227.90. An opening round of 6.14/228.48 beat Mert Littlefield's 6.20/226. A 6.08/230.06 advanced over a troubled John Hyland in round two. The semifinals saw Austin get a slight holeshot, and his 6.11/229.70 beat Pete Duhart's slightly quicker 6.09/229. This put Bucky into the final against Pat Austin. Unfortunately, Bucky's car broke, and Pat ran 6.01/232 for the victory. Bucky's next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 6.02/231.42 qualified #10, and in round one, a 6.04/231.00 advanced when Chuck Cheeseman broke on his burnout. A great 6.00/233.10 got around a fouling Al DaPozzo in round two, but he lost a close one to Craig Petersen in the semifinals. Craig's 6.05/230 beat Bucky's 6.06/231.66. He ran well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying for #2 with a 5.98/235.78. A smokey 6.36/230.00 in the first round beat Gary Rettell, and in round two, his 6.06/231.24 beat Cheeseman's quicker 6.02/233. But in the semifinals, he got a taste of his own medicine when Randy Anderson got out on him, and his 6.03/232 beat Austin's quicker 6.01/233.40. He won the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway on April 12. It was an eight-car field, and Bucky qualified #1 with a 6.21/224.15. He set a track record 6.17 at 224.83 in the opening round over Wally Zoon, and another 6.21 at 223.88 beat Terry Delavergne in the semifinals. In round 2 Austin faced #7 Qualifer Mert Littlefield, Mert never left the starting line, however Bucky left James Bond Red at .007 & threw away a 5.639/259.41 to hand the gift to Littlefield. At the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas, Bucky qualified #3 with a 5.679/254.28.
